High drama in this episode! One of the best ones yet!
The segment starts with foreshadowing, telling us about a legendary poison which makes the victim behave in an irrational and paranoid manner... we can guess that someone will be using this herb, but who will it be?

In additional to the politicking and plotting, we get an action-packed showdown in the form of a sword duel, and a hefty dose of romance.

Zipping right along...

Onwards with episode Ten (Season One) of Tremontaine titled Shadowroot written by Joel Derfner.

Death returns to Riverside. Diane makes a fateful choice.

When Tess finds herself plagued by nightmares of the murdered Ben, Kaab vows to solve the case. But she may never get the chance, for Reynald is on her trail, with more murder on his mind. Meanwhile, Will tells Diane of Micah's discovery, but her response is not what he had hoped for. And Micah gets an unexpected job offer.

Loved this one. Foreshadowing a plenty as we ramp up the drama towards to season ender.

No time to waste finishing this season as I didn’t renew my Realm supscription (don’t use it enough) and I only have a week left. Eep! Katherine Kellgren’s Diane is fabulous. She really is the cherry on top for me.

The narration is done by Sarah Mollo-Christensen ( Kaab, Micah, and Tess), Nick Sullivan ( Rafe and William Tielman, Duke Tremontaine) and Katherine Kellgren (Diane, Duchess Tremontaine).

Available on Realm.

f/f, m/m, m/f it’s all very fluent and gay

Themes: sex, swordplay, scandal and hot chocolate!

Shocking!!! Compared to the two previous installments written by the author. If I didn't know better I'd think someone ghost wrote this one for him and he just put his name on it.

'Shadowroot', loaded with details, written like short snippets of information and flows decently together. While the author tries to be clever, starts the installment talking about poison but it's pretty easy to figure out who would be using said poison and what it be mixed in.

Did like IxKaab's point of view, then you realize she pretty damn good with a sword, finds vengeance for Tess by cleverly killing Reynald.

With the Duchess who learned from the Duke, Micah's navigation calculations, which ultimately leads to a argument and you realize just how lethal, devious she truly is.

Can't forget Micah stressed out about going to the market, to let her cousin know that she won't be coming home, she'll be teaching and won't be coming back to the farm. Then you have Rafe, with his ego, out with his friends and the Duke, looking for a suitable place for his school and seems worried by the Duke being distracted.

I think Derfner's might be my favourite episodes here. That said, this was a particularly sad and painful one, with a lot of terrible things happening, and so it's doubly important for the writing to work. It did.

I thought Kaab's POV was stellar once again, and Diane's worked well. And I'm truly engrossed now.

I'm burning through all of Riverside this autumn.

This was a strong episode, with a lot of exciting twists and turns. Perhaps a bit heavy-handed in using multiple peripheral snippets to elaborate the poison featured. The fight scene was decent, and the character developments and the thickening of plot were excellent.

Tremontaine - episodes 9, 10 and 11 I'm still behind with this series, since the season finale (with more to come in October, thank the gods!) of Tremontaine has just been released, so I'm desperately trying to catch up.Of course, I could have caught up and read the whole thing by now if I hadn't been listening to the audiobook version of each episode, rather than reading it as text, but once I'd started with the series that way, it seemed wrong to stop midway through! The fact it's a 13-episode season and I've been reviewing episodes 2 at a time means I had to do a 3-episode review at some point, so today might as well be it.

In episode 9, 'Lies in Our Stars', Micah finally makes the breakthrough in her maths that she has been threatening to make for ages and discovers (much to her horror) that Kaab has been lying to her and Rafe. Since neither of them are particularly good liars, when she and Rafe meet up with Kaab by chance, she becomes suspicious that they have discovered the truth about the disinformation she's given them and is forced to tell her uncle that the method used to navigate across open water may have been discovered. All in all, a great episode for my favourite character (which is Micah, in case you were wondering, not that it's not that obvious from my previous reviews...).

In episode 10, 'Shadowroot', we get an inkling that things may be taking a decidedly deadly turn as Diane takes matters into her own hands in relation to dealing with her errant husband. Meanwhile, the swordsman who has been following Kaab on Diane's orders meets a sticky end as Kaab manages to combine the lessons she's been receiving from Vincent Applethorpe with her own past experience of combat. Rafe is looking for a place to open his school and makes Micah an offer to stay with him and teach mathematics, which just shows how little Rafe understands about teaching - Micah is clearly a genius at maths but that doesn't mean she'll be able to help anyone else understand it as well!

In Episode 11, 'Go and Tell the Morning Star', Kaab discovers some things about Diane's past (though I'd figured out just what was later to be revealed, as soon as the mention of Diane and her maid first came about...) and has to make a decision about what to do with that knowledge. Meanwhile Diane herself is still doing bad things but seems to also be having a tiny pang of conscience, which is novel, and Rafe finds that he needs to decide what is most important to him.

I can't wait to see how this all works out in the last two chapters, hoping that the characters I like most will survive, if not unscathed, since that seems an unlikely mercy from these authors!

William shares Micah’s calculations with Lady Diane. She punishes him, without him knowing it. Kaab stops her tail Reynald in Riverside and he challenges her. Rafe, his friends, and Will go looking for a building for his new school, but William is distracted.

I read this on the Kindle.

The end is near

We're getting close to the end of this season of Tremontaine (hopefully there will be more!), so things are starting to approach their resolutions.
