In the year 2517, humanity’s last hope is with Dr. Catherine Halsey, the SPARTAN-II program, and one six-year-old boy: John-117. Kidnapped and ruthlessly trained, John endures and rises as the leader of the Spartans: he becomes the Master Chief! These legendary heroes are entrusted with stopping the Covenant at all costs…but will their harrowing biological augmentation and unparalleled MJOLNIR armor be enough to rise to victory?
* From the lead writer of Halo 5: Guardians!
* A perfect companion for the Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series!
*Based on the New York Times Best-Selling novel of the same name by Eric Nylund!
Overall a fine adaptation of the novel, but disappointing. Comic leaves out a lot of relationship and world building. Would recommend reading after reading novel to help fill on some of the gaps left out
Really really good. A must-read for any Halo lover
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
A solid PG-13 read with stylized war & violence, Fall of Reach translates the early Halo lore into a visually rich graphic novel. The art style really works—clean, bold, and gritty where it needs to be, it captures the scale & tone of the Halo universe well.
As someone who read Eric Nylund’s original novel, I’ll say this: you won’t get the same depth or emotional connection to the Spartans here. Some of the more intimate character moments and finer story beats are trimmed down or omitted altogether. That said, for someone unfamiliar with the novel, this is a fantastic intro to the Halo mythos.
Even knowing the story inside-out, I still enjoyed seeing those moments rendered on the page. The visuals breathe new life into familiar scenes, and it’s hard not to geek out seeing key parts of Spartan history illustrated.
If you're a longtime fan, it's a fun companion piece. If you're new to Halo lore, it's a great place to start. Either way, it's worth the read.
A fine adaption of the novel, of course a few things were left out or summarized. Still there is a lot going on. Overall nice art style. It also has a little bit of First Strike, but not enough to spoiler you anything. I think it might a good read before playing Halo Combat Evolved if somebody is not interested in reading the books, or do like me and read both. I discovered there is also an animated series so maybe I’ll watch that too at a certain point. While it is nice, it is not amazing for 5 stars, but still a good read.
What can I say? It's not very original, rather poorly written with a terrifying lack of characterisation and dialogue with corny punchlines. Above all, it feels like a pre-calibrated adaptation – three arcs of four issues – with all the problems that entails: deleted scenes, underdeveloped characters, incomprehensible ellipses, etc.
The artwork isn't fundamentally bad—it vaguely reminds me of Cam Kennedy—but it's far from genius. The storytelling is standard and the action scenes are sometimes a bit static. The space battles are a little better handled.
This graphic novel begins with children being kidnapped and recruited into service. Each section details the training and missions of Spartans II. The last story is the fall of Reach. This is great storytelling and artwork. You get to know the Spartans II, Dr Catherine Halsey, Cortana, and others important in the fight against the Covenant.
This is a good rendition of the Fall of Reach story line in comic book form. If you've played the games and want a little backstory on Master Chief, then give this one a try. Readers get to see how John-117 came to be the Spartan he is today. If you liked the book (by the same name), you'll probably like this too.
Art was good and its a nice recap of the book but just leaves so much out due to the nature of the medium that it hardly stands alone. My poor boy keyes didnt even get to show off his loop :'(
Excellent hardcover collection of the Halo: Fall of Reach series. Not a perfect translation of the book, but obviously, like a movie, they can't include everything. Still worth it.
