Luiz Eduardo de Oliveira (born on December 13, 1944 in Brazil),[1] more famous under his artist name LEO is a Brazilian comics creator.
After having graduated as an engineer in mechanics, Oliveira left Brazil because of the military dictatorship that was in power at the time. He went first to Chile, but the following year saw the Chilean coup of 1973. This led Oliveira to leave, moving to Argentina, from where he finally returned to Brazil in 1974.
He found work as an illustrator in the advertising industry of São Paulo, before once more leaving Brazil, in 1981, this time moving to France, hoping to illustrate comics. However as the Franco-Belgian comics industry was in recession at the time, he was forced to work in advertising once again, although he managed to get the occasional piece published in L'Écho des savanes and Pilote. In 1986, with the assistance of Jean-Claude Forest, Oliveira began contributing to the youth dedicated magazines of Bayard Presse. He illustrated true stories for Okapi magazine. He then recounted Mahatma Gandhi's life in the album Gandhi, le pèlerin de la paix, for Astrapi.
In 1988, the comics writer Rodolphe asked him to provide the artwork for his stories. Their collaboration proved fruitful, producing 8 albums of material for their Trent series and 5 for their Kenya one.
In 1993, Oleveira finally achieved an old dream when Dargaud agreed to publish his first solo series: Aldébaran. In 2000, after 5 volumes of Aldébaran, he launched Bételgeuse, which was nominated for the Prize for a Series at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2004.
ENGLISH: This review is for the entire saga. A round story, an incredible planet very well drawn with a fantastic fauna. A lot of imagination. The main characters undergo a great evolution, at first they are annoying and quite stupid, but they get better when they get experience and age. The supporting characters are all very interesting. Highly recommendable.
So I really liked the last two tomes : solid 4 stars. The main guy character Marc has stopped being annoying, and everybody finally works together to find the "mantrisse". I loved this part. And the world building is still oustanding! I didn't give it 5 stars because I like the art, but I don't love it.
So I've finished the first "cycle" or mini-séries (5 tomes) inside the big series "The Worlds of Aldébaran". I'm off to find the first tome in Beltégeuse, the next part inside this series.
It is a good story about colonisation of a distant planet. To create a brave new world with a new fauna system and animal ecosystem is quite hard job. But our writer is here takes the assigment seriosly and at the end jobs is handed well.
All the time i read this comics i never doubted Aldebaran in not real. The idea of a super creature is very captivating one. As well humans lack of tecnology despite they known better time is a challenging idea to write. Though this situation makes them weak for enviroment even so they struggle to make the planet a better place to live for.
At the begining two of our character are child or young teen. A romance will be bring into blossom but the age of our protagonist is not suitable so a timeskip was needed there. Shall it be? For sure it's happen although i don't like the stories with a timeskip, I must say this one is a well executed.
The character will grow but the world around them is still same place for years. This means only one thing for a story like this. Change is coming. But will it be good for Aldebaran or things get worse over time only a sequel will decide that! What is that super creature? What is her numen? The answer for some of these questions are sufficient at last. Yet some loose end at the finish.
So, overall good characterization with a good story. And a wonderful job for a world building is there. Mister Leo quickly becomes one of my favourite comic book writer.
As I feared the biggest mystery just got pushed forward and this final volume hardly revealed anything new. It was however, satisfying to have closure on the main story even if it was through a text-only paragraph epilogue, which was weird. Overall Aldebaran was just too childish to my liking, a Y.A. sort of adventure with black and white heroes and villains, but I did appreciate the drawings, the mystique of earthlings return, and most of all the amazing creatures design and illustrations, so maybe one day I'll read the other series to finally unwrap the creature's mysteries, although they'll probably be nothing earth-shattering.
A good ending to this history of colonization that among other influences, to highlight Solaris by Stanislaw Lem. In this case the planet Aldebaran contains a mystery in its life forms.
I think that some things can only be evoked by a comic. Lots of wonder, an excellent drawing and a well told story, so well deserved four stars for this Luis Eduardo de Oliveira's series.
http://nwhyte.livejournal.com/2283674.html[return][return]Final volume in the first sequence of bande dessines by Leo, in which Marc and Kim encounter both the mysterious creature, the gigantic mantrisse. which has been lurking behind their adventures so far, and have a showdown with the authoritarian government which has been dogging their footsteps since Book 3; also contact with Earth is resumed after a gap of centuries. Perhaps because I'd left it longer than planned to read, it didn't have quite the punch I expected - though there are some really mindblowing scenes when they walk into the belly of the beast - but I will now look for and start on the second series, Betelgeuse. I am also glad to say that I'm not having much problem with the French; it's pitched just about right for my reading level.
The final book in the Aldebaran series, and another good, solid sci-fi story with a satisfying conclusion. The one slight apparent flaw in the story (which is perhaps deliberate?) was Marc and Kim ending up in their home village where the Mantrisse, now seen as the good guy, slaughtered their families and neighbours! That seems to have been conveniently forgotten.
