Straight to Hell

Rate this book
Quincy Harker is back, and the stakes are higher than ever. The fate of the world rests on the shoulders of a swearing, drinking, misanthropic half-vampire with a bad attitude and an itchy trigger finger. Harker and his team of misfits have just a few days to prevent the actual end of the world, as a group of fanatics have kidnapped a young man thought to possess the power to open the Seven Seals. The thrilling sequel to Raising Hell brings even more action, more explosions, and more Renfield to readers.

Note: This has been bundled into the Quincy Harker Omnibus Volume 1 - ebook & audio.

This time Harker is trying to stop the end of the world from the four horseman of the apocalypse. Flynn and Smith are along as well and he even enlists Renfield’s skills. Hartness gives more background on the characters and I liked learning about Flynn & Harker’s complicated past.

Magic, mayhem, ninjas, motorcycle gangs, dragons, and of course snarky banter. The pacing is great and these are easy to binge.

Narration:
Foster continues to be a great match for the writing and characters. Wally was particularly funny. The sniping between Harker & Flynn is always delightful.

Quincy, Flynn, and Smith get roped into protecting the last in a biblical line as he could be used to open the seven seals. In true fashion things go majorly sideways and they end up taking out some fairly heavy hitters. This felt like the step up expected following the initial story in the series as it hits it's stride.

About: You’d think that opening the gates to hell isn’t all that easy. Well, it turns out, as long as you got someone with the right bloodline… A young guy gets kidnapped to be used in rituals that’ll summon the Four Apocalypse Horsemen. And Harker is just not having any of this!

Mine: I was about to say that this book was way too short. But then I thought a little, and decided it was perfect. It fully followed one story, with very good and mild tracks into side stories that got fully processed here too. No unnecessary scenes, details, descriptions. It’s really well written too. It feels like reading one of those old classic superhero comic books. Your views on Harker will range from “this dude’s more deranged than Deadpool” to you laughing hysterically at what the hell just happened.

For the next month I’m preparing to read a Dacre Stoker book on Dracula, and I can tell you, I am not looking forwards to that. For it means I’ll abandon these series for almost two months. But for the time being, this one gets 5 out of 5 from me.

"Straight To Hell" is formulaic but I like the formula - I could read it for a long time.
I've run out of Harry Dresden books so Quincy Harker fills the void more than adequately.
Quincy Harker, descendant of Dracula, is a churlish wizard (he's really a softie underneath but he'd never admit to it), immortal, and always up for a fight - "I’ll never go quietly into that good night." It's a Dylan Thomas misquote, deliberately.
Someone has unleashed the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse onto Charlotte, North Carolina.
Guess who is expected to put them back in their box? Yep, Quincy motherfuckin’ Harker.
And now he and Det. Rebecca Gail Flynn are bonded (you've gotta read it to fully understand).
It could have done with a tighter edit but the few mistakes I noticed were not enough to detract from the overall enjoyment.
So, all Quincy has to do is find Wally!
To get the best from this book it makes sense to read 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker first.
3.5 Stars, raised to 4 Stars.

Quincy Harker.. Nephew Of Dracula, Monster Hunter, ward of a Angel, etc. Straight To Hell more or less picks up shortly after the 1st one ends. The book continues to delve more into the relationship between Quincy and Detective Flynn. Quincy this time has to save the skin/ass of a descendant of the Lion Of Judah & he also has to ensure the seven seals aren't broken & that the 4 horseman don't start some apocalyptic type sh*t, thereby ruining Quincy's day. I look forward to book 3.

Q could be a little hard to deal with in an everyday capacity, but, living as long as he has, seeing the hell, demons, and literal shit, it all kinda makes sense. Quincy, literally saves the world, with a little help, who knew the story of revelations could work well in a paranormal setting. At least I think paranormal is the right word here. The epilogue got me, the conversation between Quincy and Flynn, onion cutting ninjas were about this morning.

Read the "Year One" collection, and then had a chance to listen to the audiobook. The guy reading it did a great job, performing the characters and not merely reading the text. Made it more fun than text version. His Quincy sounds even more like a self-aware asshole than he does in my mind.

Quincy Harker, demon Hunter, returns and this time is up against the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Aided by Flynn, Smith and Ten, the race is on. Good second book, as we learn more about the characters.

Not as good for me as the first, too much religion stuff in it, but still enjoyable and funny and I do like the bond they have now, that's gonna make things all sorts of fun.

I love that he hits you with things that most authors would cover in several books but in these novellas. Yet at the end you're as satisfied as if you had read 6 books.

Enjoyable, but I can't help thinking he's much more like a late teens early 20's guy than someone who's been around for a century or two.

I really enjoyed the first book in the Demon Hunter series, Raising Hell, so I jumped at the chance to review Straight to Hell. Quincy Harker does have some similarities to Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. If you enjoyed the Dresden Files, the Demon Hunter series will pull in you.

Quincy Harker is still the same Quincy we met in Raising Hell, profane and attitude laden.
The big change in Quincy’s world is Rebecca Flynn, the cop whose main goal was arresting him, is now his partner and they are both working for Homeland Security. This installment of the Demon Hunter series explains why Quincy has tolerated Rebecca instead of feeding her to his Uncle Luke. It also has flashbacks that illustrate what his life was like before and after he came to live with his Uncle Luke. His teenage experiments in exactly what it takes to wake a vampire during daylight are hilarious. The centerpiece of this story is protecting a direct descendent of David (you know, got in a fight with a Philistine named Goliath, that David) who has the power to bring about the end of the work by breaking the mythical seven seals as detailed in the Book of Revelations.

Again as with the first book, the pacing was fast. Every scene taught us something new about Quincy or Rebecca and helped develop their characters. James Foster did another excellent job narrating it. If you have not had an opportunity to sample Mr. Foster’s work, the Demon Hunter series is a great place to start. He does male and female characters equally well. He brings attitude where it is needed and drops the room temperature a good twenty degrees when Uncle Luke speaks (creepy on so many levels). The production values were excellent.

I have purchased all three Quincy Harker novellas on Amazon. As soon as Mr. Foster narrates the third one for Audible, I will pick that up also.

Story (Plot) 5
Performance 5
Production Values 5
Attention Holding 5

"Straight to Hell Yeah! Harker's Back Stronger Than Ever."

"Straight to Hell" was excellent. Harker is back and stronger than ever. He's the badass good guy that you love to love. I like the direction that John G. Hartness is taking this story. The storyline was great. Along with Harker, I really like the character of Rebecca Flynn or Becks as her father, and now Harker calls her.

Harker's the dude that's going to have your back, no holds barred, even with his awesomely arrogant attitude that you can't help but like. This second in the series gives the listener more background about how him and Rebecca are working together which is giving the story a solid foundation. He was her father's former partner.

This is a series that I'd highly recommend listening to. They're novellas and they're such jewels.

James Foster is so good at what he does. He's one of my top fave narrators and this story shows his versatility as a voice actor. He has an amazing voice and he really digs into his characters to bring out their personas. He draws you in and makes you care about them. He made a good story great.

Quincy Harker is still kicking-ass and taking…well, honestly he doesn’t care what your name is, if you’re a bad guy you’re going down. Usually with a lot of blood and screaming. In this second installment of the Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter series we learn a bit more about Quincy and Detective Rebecca Gail Flynn’s backgrounds. The first chapter is the two of them trading barbs and “bonding” which kind of felt weird for this series, but at the end of the chapter they were off to guard a stoner college student who also happens to be The Lion of Judah—the one that can open the seven seals from Revelations.

Quincy, Flynn, Detective Smith, and the mysterious Renfield end up having to fight ninjas, a dragon (not really a dragon because “There is no such thing as a mother***** dragon!” and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The story is fast paced with a ton of action squeezed into this novella, which makes for a quick and fun read. I really enjoy the voice the author gives Quincy Harker. Like I mentioned in my review of book 1, it has an action/ horror comic book feel to the story.

I think I’m in love with this kinder, softer Quincy Harker. OH, he’s still foul mouthed, but he’s different than in the first novella. He had no connections other than Luke and that was tenuous at best. Now, it feels like he’s a family man. Wife: Rebecca Flynn (PLEASE don’t tell her I said that – she’ll carve my heart out. Father: Renfield. Father in Law: John Smith. He feels a little more steady and put together – if that makes any sense at all. Anyway, the story: You may have to brush up on your Revelations because there is Bible inferences. Flynn and Harker are assigned to protect the Lamb of God/Lion of Judah (Wallace Gubegna), who can open the seven seals of the scroll in God’s right hand. First four of the seven seals summon the four horsemen of the apocalypse riding in on their respective horses. First, I saw Pestilence, next was War, then Famine and then Death. Harker, Flynn, Smith & Renfield are left to defeat all four and save us all from end times.

Audible Edition.

Another hit for Hartness and James Foster!

This is a fast paced, action packed supernatural/horror that made me laugh more times than I can count.

I loved the first book, Raising Hell, so much and I was thrilled when I saw the second installment had been released on Audible. Quincy is back with his foul mouth and major snark. Man, I have it bad for Quincy Harker. The man takes no prisoners and tells it exactly the way he sees it, feelings and political correctness be damned. Quincy now works for the paranormal division of the government and he is partnered with Rebecca Flynn. Their, once antagonistic relationship is continuously evolving and we learn how Q is tied to something integral in Flynn’s past.

James Foster’s narration is what seals this as a five-star read for me. His range is excellent and each character is easily distinguish with their own voice. I can’t wait to listen to the next installment!

Quincy Harker, Son of Jonathan and Mina Harker, "Nephew" of Dracula, and all around badass demon hunter, is facing off with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalyse, or at least their avatars, which are pretty badass themselves. Working with his former nemesis in the Police department for a shadowy government agency, they need to basically stop the end of the world. No pressure though. The plot is fast paced, the action sequences are excellent and pulse pounding, and thecharacters are well written, with the dialogue between characters being snappy, serious and hilarious in turn. Any fan of urban fantasy should really enjoy this series. James Foster does an outstanding job narrating, bringing each individual character to life, really getting you invested in them.

It's Armageddon....again.

Another fun little book that goes through the four horseman and their thralls, and Quincy Harker having to deal with the fallout. There are a few typos here and there, but not enough to spoil the flow or kill the book, outright (This is usual in these books: "Think" is put in place of "Thing", that type of issue.)

The series remains campy and fun, but, the 2nd book, you almost feel like more could have been done with it (Especially when only 3 out of the 4 Horsemen are visited, directly, and the 4th is kind of dealt with "Off-screen")

Still, it was worth reading and: Flynn/Q/Remy/etc. remain interesting enough to keep me engaged. Books 4-5 will be finished shortly.

Signed, sealed, and delivered action. The second Quincy Harker has several moments of truly epic writing - when Quincy bonds with Flynn is one of the best scenes I have ever read along those lines. (And I read a lot of urban fantasy and romances with blood bonds being formed.)
