This book is great to help children understand and appreciate children who learn differently. Highly recommend reading it to students in grades 2-6 who have have a learning disability.
Mel Levine, M.D., was professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School and director of its Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning. He was the founder and cochairman of All Kinds of Minds, a nonprofit institute for the understanding of differences in learning, and the author of two previous national best-selling books, A Mind at a Time and The Myth of Laziness.
A sensitive look at those children in every class who are struggling and displaying behaviour problems. A behaviour problem is always a flag for something else. Barriers to learning need deciphing and Dr Levine seems to have the knack. I need to read the help pages again, I'm not sure how useful they will ultimately be as I seem to have children with multiple learning disorders and feel like the strategies are a moveable feast. But yes I enjoyed the book and I can see how reading it to a struggling child would really help them to gain some self confidence and trust. My only disappointment with the book was that the girl characters were pipped for jobs as carer, nurturer, educators whilst the boys were pipped for scientist, engineer and sportsman roles. I felt it gave the book a rather dated socio sexual stereotype that I did not like or approve of. I know its an old book. It needs republishing without gender bias.
We were worried about Zac’s diagnosis with orthographic dyslexia in 2004, so we read Understanding Dyslexia (Marion Saunders), All Kinds of Minds (Dr. Mel Levine), and Guidelines for All Kinds of Minds (ditto). Friends had recommended them, and they were helpful, although orthographic dyslexia doesn’t seem to have much to do with regular dyslexia.
All Kinds of Minds is for kids with all types of learning disabilities, and comes with Guidelines for parents and teachers. I skimmed them – they didn’t look useful, but friends might want them. Understanding Dyslexia was more helpful, raising questions about types of testing and diagnoses.
This book may have been written for children, but I found it helpful, too. Dr. Melvin Levine is an exceptionally compassionate and insightful pediatrician and author.
I really thought this book help me understand learning disabilities so that I can teach students with learning disabilities. I know have a better understanding.
I think this was a good book a I like that it talked about different people each time. The people were Eddie, sonya, bill, eve, and Derek. They all have learning disorders.
