[Image Comics] FIRST ISSUES: The Bad (Full review on the WondrousBooks blog.)

Ugh... Okay? First of all, I did not like the drawings. At all. Second, the story was too mundane, nothing to actually grab your attention and hold it so that you really want to get your hands on the next issue. Third - who is Jack? Jack is an asshole, everybody hates Jack, you will also hate Jack after reading this. The reader is neither willing to hate him and love him at the same time, nor to sympathize with him in any way. He is just an annoying old douchebag who was apparently so bad at politics that even a small town which was ruled by his dad could not stand him.

The description does its work to pull your attention - "A HORROR-COMEDY FOR ANYONE WHO HATES POLITICS!".

1. Politics don’t seem to be the subject here.
2. There is only one supernatural character and the rest of it is completely boring.
3. For the most part it’s not really funny, just pathetic.

One star goes to the dolphin. Because… reasons.

I can see how this did not go over that well when it came out because people weren't ready to make jokes about presidential elections yet. Now it is still a little sensitive still, but I absolutely loved the commentary about news and media. The dolphin character was so funny how they kept being cut off and no one actually wanted to hear their real facts. Then with the campaign manager having all these signatures from Florida, and are working to profit off of Jack's toxic masculinity it was too good. There's certainly a lot there that is both topical and absurd. The only thing I was a little on the fence about was the horror aspect. I'm sure that will be revealed later on, but within this issue alone there is only the threat of horror elements.

Citizen Jack is a lot of fun. No, Jack isn't Don. Jack isn't Joe, either. In particular, I liked the parts where Jack was begging to stop, but the deal doesn't allow for it. If the local library ends up stocking the rest of the series, I can't wait to read more.

Probably would have loved it if I had read it before Donald Trump was elected.

I coughed up for a Humble Bundle of Image comics, and this was part of a bundle within the bundle -- first issues and previews. I've read Humphries' work before, and liked it well enough, but this is a bit of a head-scratcher. It's a satire, certainly, and apparently inspired by Donald Trump, but it's got the air of wannabe Garth Ennis, and it's hard to see what the hell the point of it is thanks to an overall lack of focus in what it's actually satirizing. Tommy Patterson's artwork is a benefit to the book, but even that doesn't help. I have no urge at all to find the other issues.

So, this comic, I basically liked. The characters and their interactions were fun. The dialogue was good. I like the idea of someone making a deal with the devil to win the presidency. But I found that this issue had some weird little bits which strained the bounds of what I could believe and I suspect that later issues will have that issue even more acutely, so I don't feel a strong temptation to keep reading.
