A whimsical version put out by Barnes and Noble which features many of the wonderful stories we've heard growing up with such charming, old-fashioned looking illustrations!

Ages: 4 - 9

**Like my reviews? Then you should follow me! Because I have hundreds more just like this one. With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

So Follow or Friend me here on GoodReads! You’ll see my updates as I’m reading and know which books I’m liking and what I’m not finishing and why. You’ll also be able to utilize my library for looking up titles to see whether the book you’re thinking about reading next has any objectionable content or not. From swear words, to romance, to bad attitudes (in children’s books), I cover it all!

I got this from the bargain table to read aloud to my son at night, hoping it would be a good collection of fairy tales (so many of them are either exclusively Grimm, or H.C. Andersen). It was just far too badly edited. All the major stories were there: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, etc., plus the more obscure ones. But the editor had obviously tried to clean up some of the gorier elements, and not too well. It was like having a frantic mother realize that there was violence in the story, and blurt out whatever alternative she could think of. Little Red Riding Hood ends abruptly with something along the lines of: "And did Red and her grandmother get rescued? Or were they eaten? What do YOU think?" The stepsisters in Cinderella don't try on the shoes at all, and they go live in the palace with Cinderella where their characters are reformed and they marry rich dukes. It was very hackneyed and rendered some of the stories unrecognizable. The pictures were pretty, but the same picture was used for every prince and princess.

This set of old-time fairy tales reminds me more of Grimm Brothers style of stories versus the happy ending fairy tales. This could work for upper elementary as there is some “older” themes like “cutting open the wolf” or “you shall die”. It’s great to have the students have as much access to fairy tales and fables, so these 1-2 page quick stories are a great way to accomplish that.

Thank goodness for modern adaptations. Wonder tales have their place, but these versions are just too out-of-date, relying on cultural traditions we're better shet of.

I like Price's art, but mostly for animals and young children, not for princes etc.

Skimmed carefully December 2021.

This was by far my favorite fairy tale book as a child. "Toads and Diamonds" is a story that I hold close to my heart, and unfortunately one that so many others seem to have missed out on. The art is beautiful and the stories are adventurous. I've held on to it in case I have children one day!

I didn't like this book too well. There were some of the same illustration for different stories. While reading these stories they didn't seem as plesant as I remember the stories being.

One of my favorite books as a child. Might have had the 1921 edition as my sister was born in 1926. What wonderful stories and illustrations! Who else has the wonderful Fur Ball story?
