The Healthy Bones Nutrition Plan and Cookbook: How to Prepare and Combine Whole Foods to Prevent and Treat Osteoporosis Naturally

Rate this book
Drugs that claim to prevent or redress bone loss can actually cause bones to crumble and break. Calcium supplements, fortified processed food, and pasteurized dairy don't work because the calcium in them doesn't reach our bones. More than 60 percent of American women take calcium supplements (for which they paid $180 million last year), and the 2014 osteoporosis-related fracture-treatment bill was approximately $19 billion. It s a grim picture, but The Keep Your Bones Healthy Cookbook can help. Coauthors Dr. Laura Kelly and Helen Kelly have a firm grasp on the disciplines concerned with bone health, and they show readers a natural, effective, and safe approach to conserve bone mass and build healthy bones by eating the right foods in the right combinations. Helen and Laura are mother and daughter. When Helen Kelly was diagnosed with osteoporosis, Laura dug into the research on bone metabolism and digestion. She created a unique diet-based approach to building bone health that emphasizes the importance of choosing, preparing, and combining foods properly so that the body can absorb the nutrients they contain. Helen has been following the plan for two years and has stopped her bone loss completely without taking any pharmaceuticals. The book begins with a primer on bone metabolism and the many factors that can help build strong bones or lead to bone loss. Laura Kelly helps readers understand the roles of individual vitamins, minerals, and enzymes in bone metabolism, providing a framework so readers can work with their doctors to create personalized plans for skeletal health. The book includes more than 100 bone health recipes ranging from sauces and small plates to soups, salads, and main dishes, plus drinks and desserts. Recipes and meals include and feature bone broths, fermented foods, bone-strengthening herbs, and raw dairy. The authors also explain how to make (or grow) your own base ingredients such as ghee, shitake mushrooms, and everyday sourdough bread. Readers can count on their nutrient plan and these recipes to provide food that helps calcium reach, and potentially strengthen, their bones."

The author is very knowledgable on osteoporosis and food choices. However, it would be very difficult to make the recipes she suggests because she makes her own butter, grows her own herbs and mushrooms, purchases raw milk, etc. Living in a large urban area, I don't see how this is workable, especially if a person has a job and family!

I’m not going to be sprouting any beans anytime soon, but the explanation of how the body builds and breaks down bone, and what vitamins and minerals are needed to aid this process, was excellent. The authors also provide good information about bisphosphonates, how they work, and how effective they are. The recipes didn’t appeal to me, but the discussion of foods and their mineral content, how they work synergistically, and just a general idea of what to eat, was very helpful.

Three stars because I was completely in sync with the first part. The cookbook left much to be desired. I need easy and simple if I’m going to eat at all. As a picky eater I would just love some smoothie recipes that I can blend up and drink and be done. I’m trying to change my diet and this just mad me feel helpless and frustrated.

I found this book extremely helpful regarding pharmaceuticals, nutrition and absorption of nutrients. The recipes well, I did not find as helpful. Still, I highly recommend for anyone interested in bone health.

This is an excellent resource for good health and recipes. I read it on Kindle but I am going to buy it in book form to have for reference. Lots of information on vitamins and minerals for healthy eating. I like the idea of good food rather than medication.

Excellent discussion of the body’s biochemistry and the best combinations of nutrients for bone health, but the recipes are practically useless because they are complicated and use ingredients that are not easy to access for the average person.

It was a pretty good and helpful book with up to date information regarding osteoporosis and holistic methods of stopping it and reversing it. I was slightly disappointed with author's recommendations to eat non fermented soy. Included many interesting bone building recipes. I'll revisit this book again in the near future. Great book for someone first searching for this kind of information!
