An abandoned baby is the last thing town founder Will Canfield expects on his doorstep. He's not the father—and the mother's unknown. But the precious little girl needs a protector. And Will never backs down from a challenge, even if it means caring for a newborn…or dealing with spitfire cattle driver Tomasina Stone.
With her father gone, Tomasina's trail life has ended. Yet becoming a polished city lady feels far out of her reach. All she wants is a place where she'll be appreciated, respected…maybe loved. And the more time she spends helping Will care for the baby, the more she wonders if she's found it. She's never wanted to settle down…but Cowboy Creek—by Will's side—might finally give her heart a lasting home.
Cowboy Creek: Bringing mail-order brides, and new beginnings, to a Kansas boomtown
Where to start? Special Delivery Baby was just a good as I was anticipating. It was a sweet story with heartfelt characters and it was a treat to read.
I liked how the MC was tough and yet also delicate. The romance was very nice and I LOVED the baby. It was cute to see how the story progressed and the ending was good.
All in all, Special Delivery Baby was a great read and I loved it! Now I just need to get the third book and I can finish this series. :D
*I received a complimentary eBook copy of this book from the author. I was not required to read or review it. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
Will is a hotel owner and one of the founding fathers of Cowboy Creek. Everything has a place and Will has a plan for everything. So when a baby is left outside his door with no indication of who it belongs to, Will's life is completely upset. Tomasina, a cowgirl, is in town after the death of her father. She's at a loss as to where her life is headed now that her father's group of cowboys have disbanded.
This story was very unique. It was a nice change for the typical format that romance novels usually follow. The characters had depth and were entertaining. I enjoyed the side story with the baby as well as the continuation from the previous book in the series. I believe this book could be read as a stand alone, but since the first book is good, it makes sense to read it first to get a real feel for the town and the story. The author did a great job of creating interest in the next book with a lead in for the last man in the group of founding fathers. So I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. There are some slight elements of faith woven throughout the book, but they are light and fit well with the plot. Overall, this was a fun, fast read that I enjoyed and would recommend to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or sweet romances.
I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.
I like the first book in this series, and this second installment did not disappoint!
It was wonderful to see into the mind of the stoic Will Canfield and see a slow-burn love develop between him and Tomasina Stone. To be honest, I wasn't sure HOW they were going to end up together because they each just seemed too set in their own ways! Fortunately, Ms. Shackelford was able to wrap everything up in a believable and satisfying way.
There was an amusing bit where one of the "Bride Train" women makes fun of the previous couple in the series that actually had me laughing out loud - I thought this was a nice touch and one of the tiny details that makes this book an interesting read.
I also enjoyed the fact that this story wrapped up a side story that had begun in the first installment, especially since I had guessed correctly in the big reveal towards the end. I'm looking forward to more of the same in the third installment, since there was another story line that was hinted at in this one.
Although each of these books could technically be read as standalones, I think it would be important to read each of them in order, simply because there are several overarching story lines and clues are being dropped in each book.
2nd book in series "Cowboy Creek", Special Delivery Baby by Sherri Shackelford.
This book tells the story of Will Canfield one of the three founders of this growing community.
At the beginning Will finds a baby abandoned outside his door and a huge amount of cattle being run through the streets going to the holding pens outside of town. With those cattle one young woman is a drover and catches his eye, Tomasina Stone is known as "Texas Tom". I enjoyed reading about the tender loving side of this rough man who had been through a war and was trying to live a life so different now. He needed a wife, had two failed engagements before and was ready to find that special someone. He was having a nice house built to be ready when he found her. Can a drover change her rowdy ways and settle down in town, she has lost her father and knows staying with the life as she has known it on trips like this one will soon end. She likes what she sees in the women she meets that accept her and of the men who want to get to know her better. Come read about the men-women and now a baby at Cowboy Creek.
Special Delivery Baby a Cowboy Creek Series by Sherri Shackelford. Will Canfield owns many buildings in Cowboy Creek. A baby is left as his door. He takes care of the baby until the mother shows up. Tomasina Stone just arrived into town. She is a cattle driver. Tomasina is a spitfire. She doesn't own a dress. She tries different jobs but none seem to fit her. She is out spoken. There is a connection between Will and Tomasina. The mother of the baby comes forward. A good read.
Read this book quickly in one evening! So good! Love the spunkiness of Tomasina! The ending was great and the last scene with Noah made me laugh and I can't wait for his story!
This is the middle book in the Cowboy Creek trilogy, so it had some continuing plot lines from the first book and provided a set up for the next book. The town is still being harassed by a gang of outlaws and discover some paperwork problems that don't fit the gang's MO which opens the field of suspicion. Daniel and Will also order a bride for their recalcitrant friend Noah, and she arrives in the following book.
The contrast between Will and Tomasina is what stood out to me in this story. At first they butt heads but soon learn to understand and admire each other's point of view. They have great chemistry but allow their differences to get in the way of developing a relationship... until they just can't help themselves of course ;) The baby doesn't play as big of a part of the plot as the synopsis implies- Tomasina actually is involved in a wide variety of jobs in the thriving town until she finds the right one that fits. I enjoyed seeing her transformation as she searches for a new purpose and her friends help her find pleasure in becoming a lady. Her no nonsense and frank way of speaking serves the town well as she shares her opinion on how they can benefit from her ideas. I appreciated that Will respected her as an individual and didn't allow her gender to prevent him from helping her reach her potential.
(I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher; all opinions in this review are my own)

I LOVE it when the characters are so mismatched that you would never put them together normally but, the author does an amazing job of fashioning a story that is effortless to where the characters HAVE to be together! This is the case with this story! Will and Tomasina are such opposites that their interactions are hilarious and so much fun to read! I had a hard time putting this book down! I am loving this series of Cowboy Creek. Will is a serious man who helped found the town of Cowboy Creek. He's quite wealthy but doesn't flaunt it, he'd rather help people. Tomasina comes roaring into town with a cattle drive as a drover, wearing men's clothing and feeling at home on the range. Ladylike things are foreign to her! When a baby is left on the doorstep of Will's hotel room, of course, he takes charge immediately. Tom (as Tomasina is known) helps him some but she's fairly new to babies too! I absolutely loved this book and all the "happenings of Cowboy Creek"! There are mysteries, a failed rodeo, babies, mail order brides, jail breaks, fake deeds - you name it! I loved the historical part of it too. I highly recommend this book!
Tom and Will are absolutely perfect for one another. I really enjoyed taking the journey with them as they both found the path that God intended for them.
This story has a very unique take on the abandoned baby story-line. I suspected after reading the first book in the series that a surprise baby would be joining the town. I even knew who the mother would be. When I started to read this book, I was pleased that I was right. That being said, the twists and turns that were taken to solve that mystery was incredibly refreshing.
The intrigue and drama from the 1st book in the series carried over seamlessly into the 2nd. I have a pretty good idea now who is plotting against the town. I am looking forward to see how it is resolved in the next book in the series.
A baby found at your door can change all things in your life. This story follows the adventures of the man who takes the baby in & his determination to find out whose baby it is. Through all this, he meets a woman who he falls for and he finds the Mother of the baby along the way.
Tomasina, aka Texas Tom, is most comfortable on horseback, driving cattle to market. Hotel owner Will is all about civilization, building a town on the frontier and running for office. Opposites attract in a fun story with a dash of mystery.
Special Delivery Baby follows aspiring politician Will Canfield when one morning, much to his surprise, a baby is dropped on his doorstep. He sets off in hot pursuit after the runaway mother, crying baby in tow, and finds himself in the middle of a cattle drive and is saved by the fiery redhead drover, Tomasina Stone. They share a verbal rapport about Cowboy Creek's strict no-gun laws and no, a rodeo is not permitted though Tomasina doesn't seem too keen on obeying Will's rules. Friends Daniel and Leah point out that Will is a sound choice to leave a baby with since he's well-off and well-respected but Will isn't ready for a baby - he wants a wife! Meanwhile, Tomasina is determined to make a name for herself, carry on after her father's death and ruffle a few feathers along the way. The two butt heads as Tomasina regularly refers to Will as Daddy Canfield and Will tries to figure Thomasina out. As their affections grow for each other, Thomasina's worries about who she is and how she fits not-so-temporarily in Cowboy Creek. Can she leave the only life she's known and settle down? Will the baby's birth parents reveal themselves?
While I enjoyed Special Delivery Baby it was not my favorite in the series. Will and Tomasina are great characters, especially with her self-discoveries, but some of the squabbling felt dragged out. Sherri Shackelford does well looping the mystery baby element seamlessly into the already built plot and the parental instincts that surfaced as a result are believable. Part of you truly wants Will and Tomasina to raise the baby as their own but both are committed to resolving the mystery, which is endearing. Note that minor violence against women is used as a plot device in this novel. I rated novel number two as three stars and would recommend to anyone looking for a mystery/romance.
This was a delightful story with a great collection of characters--each unique and enjoyable to read about. Set in a fictional Kansas cow town laced with all the details of a real city of its day, it could have been Abilene in 1871.
My only complaint--and I don't know if this was the author or her big-city, non-country, editor--but in one scene, the words bull and steer were used as synonyms. When it comes to cattle, a bull is a male that continues to have all the equipment needed to reproduce. A steer is a male which has had its reproduction equipment removed. The two words, bull and steer, are not interchangeable. Once you get past that, the story feels like the old West in action.
The plot was clever and multi-dimensional. There were some twists that kept me guessing for several pages, then on the edge of my seat as I waited to find out if I guessed correctly.
Tomasina was an interesting character. She struggled to find herself since the person who had defined her most of her life, her father, had died on the trail. She knew the men around her would not accept her for herself or tolerate her chosen lifestyle if she continued doing what she knew best. I enjoyed watching her work through her self-discovery.
As for that baby, she was a heart-warmer. This was a sweet romance I would recommend to anyone.
What to do when one finds a baby on your doorstep, find the mother of course. Will is a single man who isn't looking for love or a family but opens his door to find a bundle of joy. The cattle drive is coming to town and as a founding father of the town he must be ready for that and to meet the new brides coming into town. Story had plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading and nothing worked out as it seemed.
This is a mail order bride tale of sorts. Four brides arrived in Cowboy Creek in the previous book. Now the tale is continued. Will has ambitions of being in politics and Tomasina is a cattle driver, through and through, just like her deceased trail boss Pa. She is rough as a cob and oh so pretty too. They have a hard time accepting the feeling that are developing in each of them. You will enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.
I absolutely love this series and especially Tom and Will's story. Two total opposites find everything they need in each other. I love a strong female lead and Tom fits the bill.
I absolutely loved this story! Talk about two completely mis-matched people! My favorite line was “She doubted Pippa had ever discovered a snake in her bedroll and eaten it for supper.” 😂
I am so glad that I chose this series to start with, after having read similar books by different authors they were poorly written and I never read one again until I decided to try it again with this series :) I really enjoyed the first book, I love all the characters! I really enjoyed this book as well, I'm glad they made Texas Tom to be a strong, independent Woman. I hate when they are always a "damsel in distress". With that being said, Texas Tom is alot like myself so I'm glad this author made a character I can relate to :) SPOILERS AHEAD CONTINUE AT YOUR OWN RISK ;) I wish there was more mystery in the baby that arrived on the doorstep. after the mention of Hannah clothes it was very easy to put it together and I knew who it was in the beginning, however I didn't see James being the father until later on in the book then it fell into place. I loved the little baby but I wish there was more about her. I can't wait to read the next book and find out about Noah and his bride coming, the Murdocks gang and if Leah and opal ever their baby, if the sherif dies, ect... I'm going to be sad when this series ends since I'm so invested in these characters... my own ancestors were from Slovenia and moved to Kansas, so I picture my family when I'm reading :) I had gotten out of my family history for awhile since my little girl keeps me busy most of the time, thanks to these series I have started working on my tree again and found living relatives along with new family pictures ♡ So a Big Thank you to these writers and this series ♡♡♡
A charming look at life right after the civil war, how the towns were built in that era, the power structure of those communities, and their fight for survival against all the dangers surrounding them. Even though being a second book in the series, there's enough repetition of the events from the previous book, I believe this could be read as a standalone story. I was intrigued by Will in the previous book, and I was excited to get a chance to read his story. Will and Tomasina can seem as total opposite at the first sight, but more I got to know them, more I realized they were really the same, both independent thinkers, innovative, filled with new ideas and concepts, leaders who are willing to ride in first to protect their people. The passion for life, for the success of the town, for little Ava, and for each other was the thriving force between them, and in the story. The one thing I did miss in this story was the faith in God, that leads, guides, and protects the characters and is in the center stage in most of the Love Inspired stories. Alluring historical fiction of building a town after the civil war mixed with romance and entertaining characters. The bravery of the people in town, the ingenuity, and protectiveness was delightful, and little Ava stole all the hearts for sure. ~ Four Spoons
SHE’D LEAD HIM ON A MERRY CHASE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE
I enjoyed this second book in the Cowboy Creek series, each written by a different author but sharing the theme joined by a town who brought in several mail-order brides. The story comes with lots of mystery, suspense, and secrets. With an abandoned baby, cattle drovers, mysterious females, questionable neighbors and townsfolk, outlaws, robberies, romance and weddings, this edition will keep the reader enthralled and the pages turning.
The plot twist kept me captivated as we met Tomasina “Tom” Stone, a woman who has worked as a cattle drover with her father since she was nine-years-old. She is rough, tough, and can handle a rope and a gun better than most men. Who had a baby and abandoned it at Will Canfield’s door? The story has delightful characters, a charming town, unusual circumstances, mystery and intrigue, witty and entertaining dialog all done in a clean story. This story will read as a standalone but is much better if joined with the first book, Want Ad Weddings by Cheryl St. John. I look forward to the third book in this series, Bride by Arrangement. Disclosure: I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.
I loved this story by Sherri Shackelford. Will Canfield and Tomasina Stone are perfect for each other, once they work through some things, like Texas Tom being a drover, and Will wanting to go into politics. With an abandoned baby in the mix, I couldn't stop reading.
Will Canfield, Noah Burgess, and Daniel Gardner found Cowboy Creek after they get out of the war. Tomasina drives a herd of cattle into Cowboy Creek. Her pa had died on the trail. Will finds an abandoned baby outside his door. The Murdoch gang instigating trouble, Will having rules in town he expects to be obeyed, and Texas Tom out to break every one of them, and abandoned baby had me laughing, crying, and cheering for the characters. I felt like I was living in this town and these were my neighbors.
Tomasina wants her past back, her life as a drover and her pa in charge. Will is looking to the future. Cowboy Creek would be the county seat and he the governor. Can Will and Tomasina come to terms on what they want out of life? Sometimes what we want most out of life isn't really what we need. This is a story you don't want to miss.

This is the second book of the series Cowboy Creek. Special Delivery Baby is the story of one of the three town founders and this is Will Canfield's story. Having a baby abandoned on your door step changes everything. Sherri Schackelford takes you on a ride filled with ups and downs as Will and a woman trained more to be a cowgirl than anything else. this was a fun and interesting story that teaches you that sometimes a straight line is not GOD's plan for you. You have to learn as you go and if it was a straight line you would miss something. this is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone and does well that way. Sherri Schackelford continues to not disappoint with her well written and well researched stories. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
This was my first book by Sherri Shackelford. I'm a big fan of historical fiction, at least of those authors who can interweave historical fact seamlessly within the fictional story. I have to say that I enjoyed this book. It was a nice, light historical romance with touches of humor throughout. A book that can make me laugh is a winner in my opinion. I would definitely read more of Ms Shackelford's books.
I received this book for free through the goodreads.com giveaway but the words of this review are my own.
I love historical romance novels. The people then did not have all the modern amenities we have now, but they seem to have more love and caring for one another. Loved the story of Will and Tomasina aka Texas Tom, Texas Tom was a cattle drover and Will was a gentlemen, such an unlikely pair. But there difference brought them together. Cannot wait to read Noah's story.
A baby. A rule-loving town leader. A tomboy drover. Throw in a gang out for revenge, and it all combines to make a delightful love story.
I've read one other book by this author, and I am delighted that her writing style hasn't changed. Her characters are enjoyable, though the plot was a little unbelievable at times. And though this is an inspirational book, it's not in your face about the religious details.
