Kids love stuff that's gross. From the liquids, solids, and gases--especially the gases!--or their own bodies to the creepy, crawly, slimy, slithery, fetid, and feculent phenomena in the world at large, kids with a curious bent just can't get enough. Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty brings together, in one book, all the good things about some of the baddest things on Earth.
Exhaustively researched and impeccably scientific, yet written with a lively lack of earnestness, Oh, Yuck! is an ants to zits encyclopedic compendium covering people, animals, insects, plants, foods, and more. Here are vampire bats, which sip blood and pee at the same time so that they'll always be light enough to fly away; and slime eels, wreathed in mucus and eating fellow fish from the inside out. Oh, Yuck! explains why vomit smells; where dandruff comes from; what pus is all about; and why maggots adore rotting meant. Other features include gross recipes, putrid projects, 10 foods that make you airborne, and more.
With hundreds of cartoon illustrations and real-life photographs, Oh, Yuck! is the complete guide to the irresistible--at least to an 8-to-12 year old--underbelly of life.
I actually completely forgot about this book until I was discussing it with my friend lol I remember checking this book out several times from the library. I was one of those kids who thought poop and farts were funny and anything gross was up my alley. I just enjoyed grossing myself out and learning about random stuff 😅
This is a book, I hesitated to get... just because I didn't know how much emphasis I wanted to put on nasty things when it's such a natural focus already for little kids (male kids). I think it is still a little advanced for my kids, but they always want to read it, so I have to simplify the wording a lot. It's quite scientific about the processes of gross things, and frankly, I have found it to be fascinating. We recently learned all about Acne. Extremely gross, but very informative. I think it turns it from being something unexplained and gross/funny to something more scientific and makes it more, shall I say, dignified? Science is interesting! And even gross things have a place in science and it helps to take the brainless comical nastiness out of things and turn it into something... worth while in education. In addition to gross bodily problems one might experience, it includes nasty creatures (which are actually more of the emphasis than the body stuff). And it is fascinating to learn about the strange creatures of the world and their odd/nasty behaviors.
Do you like things like vomit, maggots, rats, pus, toilets, and roaches? After all even the nicest things have a gross side! And it is really fun to learn all the scientific facts about the dirty stuff that makes us want to vomit. This book was Interesting, attention grabbing, humorous, and downright nasty all at the same time! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a strong stomach and a sense of humor.
Even though my son was too young for this book at the time, I just had to buy a copy. I knew he would love learning about all the icky nasty stuff in the world, and I would love it just as much reading it to him!
THis is a very funny book that will get kids interested in science, the easy way it is very funny listing everything from Acme to that stuff between your toes it is a fun read for all ages
I really liked the book. I liked the book because it was about gross and nasty stuff. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read gross stuff.
I read this when I was a kid because it was by the same author as Oh, Yikes! I liked the other book better, even though it was less popular, because history interested me more than the gross-out science in this book.
My core memory of this book is being afraid to turn to the page with a big, close-up picture of a leech sucking blood on it o.O;; But I also for some reason retained the info for how to make your feet smell really good (soak them in water with vinegar and lemon juice), so that's nice

This book lives up to it's name, it is absolutely gross. Although it is gross, gross is sometimes very cool. I learned a ton of stuff by reading this book, such as fifteen ways to say "throwing up" ( my favorite? Doing the technicolor yawn) I learned why we burp, fart, and throw up. There are little blurbs in this book called "the putrid past" they talk about how history was gross. One thing they said was that Queen Isabella, the lady who launched Christopher Columbus off on his journey, only took two baths in her entire lifetime. For four hundred years taking a bath was considered disgusting, unhealthy, and bad for you. ( bet you won't learn that in your history class). I liked the parts about gross stuff that people eat ( I will never eat hot dogs or sausages again). This book was very disgusting, but it was amazing. I've read this book over about a million times. I would recommend this book to everyone ( yes, even you adults reading this) because it is very informational, and the facts and illustrations are hilarious.
From acne to zits, this book covers everything gross, stinky, slimy, yucky, and ick you can think of. I love this book!
I like the photos, but the captions are nearly too small to read. That's a bummer.
I love science books like this one where we get to learn all the freaky stuff teachers don't tend to tell kids. Why not? Make this book a science text, and I bet a lot of kids will be a more exited about learning.
The title says it all. My daughter had to read a nonfiction (not a biography) book for school. This book caught my eye. I couldn't read sections because I would never be able to eat again. Truly gross. I know know the recipe for making a shrunken head. This book didn't dissapoint even though it was exceptionally gross!!!
An amusing and educational book. I was given this a few years ago, and spent hours reading it. It provides a lot of information on an assortment of gross subjects, but does so in a comedic, surprisingly non-vile way - It's very interesting. Some facts can be pretty gross, but all we can blame is nature, I guess.
I have two boys, what do you expect? We've enjoyed reading this together and separately ("Hey, mom, did you know...!). Some things were repeated a little (acne = zits), but not completely rehashed. It has been a fun read to pick up and discover something about us and our world that we didn't necessarily know before.

This book takes the gross route to educating kids on science from snot to acne and vomit to fleas. Just about every topic we don’t like to discuss over dinner is covered in this book. This may be just the book to reach out to young boys to catch their interest in everything scientific.
I like this book because it makes you go ewwwwww thats gross and I don't like this book because it's very explicit. It shows you pictures of roaches and throw up and rashes ect... I recomend this book to anybody that likes gross books.
TOTALLY DISGUSTING!! ....and definitely worth reading. You know that you always wanted to know more about ringworms, pus, and warts! Well, this book explains it all. It's definitely one worth checking out!
I don't know about this book. From the cover I thought that it would be nasty and I wasn't disappointed with it. Everything that the cover has on it gives you a great idea of that it is about. I would recommend this book towards younger kids.
This is a great book for kids, boys especially, to read during those prescribed 15 or 20 minutes of reading time per night. It's fun and informative and not everything is about boogers.
