Stories:

Autumn Glory by Barbara Metzger - 'Fiesty' girl tries to spoil her father's plans to marry her and her sisters off. She felt like a spoilt brat to me and her father whipping her was far too much, far too late. Of course, being a romance there is the obligatory HEA. Maybe 1 star.

Sweet Charlatan by Patricia Veryan - I'm a sucker for wounded Regency heroes and really hoped to get into this story. She poses as the fiancee of a dead soldier and moves into his family's home. Her betrothed comes from a wealthy family and her family isn't; her mother is sickly and they can't move to the North where her 'cruel' uncle has given the a house that he has even refurbished. (Her uncle may be harsh and not a nice personality, but he isn't cruel - not according to the laws of the time period when he could simply have had them removed from the house.) When the not-really-dead-but-only-amnesiac hero is returned to his family, she stays. He isn't dead but I almost couldn't tell the difference; Veryan tries to play him as very wounded and tentative but I found him almost non-existant. Two stars and that's reaching.

My Lord's Lady by Leslie Lynn - I gave up after two paragraphs and can't even remember enough about it to...

Petticoat Hall by Joan Smith - This is the best of the lot and I'd give it 4 stars. A frivolous lordling is told by his father that he will marry a certain girl in Scotland. He's certain she will have red hair and freckles and so devises a plan to send his valet in as a butler to give them a disgust of him even before they meet and then he'll play it up when he arrives. Due to his valet getting a sprained ankle, the lord must take on the position as butler himself and decides the valet will come later as himself. By the end of the story he decides that her red hair and freckles have their own attraction but must get himself out of the tangle he's woven. Nicely 'real' characters and only the end didn't ring quite true because (due to short story format) it was over in a few short paragraphs.

It was with great anticipation that I opened this book as it included short stories by two of my favorite humorous Regency authors, Barbara Metzger and Joan Smith. However, these two did not come up to my expectations as they were so very silly that they were not enjoyable or funny at all. I tried to read them all but just could not as time is too short to waste on stupid plots and ridiculous characters that are not even ridiculous enough to be funny. I would give more details but they just wouldn't stay in my head and I don't want to go back and take another look. Sorry.

I have to agree with the negative reviews here. I was looking forward to the short stories by Metzger and Smith and they were lacking the humor and the wit those two authors are known for. I started reading the stories by Veryan and Lynn but they weren't interesting enough to keep on reading.

Metzger had the only 4 stars. The rest were “yawn.”
