The Black Hills-a land of fragrant pines and vast blue skies, a sacred land inhabited by the buffalo, the bear, the hawk and the eagle. An untamed land, where the Cheyenne roamed free. Accustomed to the ways of the white man, Michael Wolf agrees to seek a vision to fulfill the dying wish of his Cheyenne grandfather. But through a twist in time, Michael finds himself in the past, in the last golden days before the battle of the Little Big Horn. Here, in the land of the spotted eagle, he also finds the woman of his dreams. Elayna had been raised to fear the Indians who roam the land, but all that changes when she is kidnapped by the Cheyenne warrior now known as Wolf. In time, her disdain changes to desire as love blossoms between them, and with it a growing fear that their time together is little more than a whisper in the wind.
Madeline Ruth was born on 1963 in California, where she raised. She married her high school sweetheart and they have three sons, all handsome enough to be cover models. Growing up, her favorite pastimes were going to the movies and going horseback riding on Saturday mornings at Griffith Park. Madeline has always been "horse happy." A horse was the one thing she asked for on every birthday and every Christmas. Many years later, that dream came true when she bought an Appaloosa mare named Candy—because she was so sweet. Madeline loves animals. Over the years, she's had numerous dogs, cats, fish, mice, hamsters, turtles and birds, and her horse, of course. The most exotic pet was a crocodile that belonged to one of her sons. Currently, she has a terribly spoiled Pomeranian named Teddi, six goldfish, a catfish, and a betta. When she's not writing, Madeline enjoys going to movies and the theater. Her favorite plays are The Phantom of the Opera, The Scarlet Pimpernel and her all-time fave, Beauty and the Beast. She also loves reading, going to lunch with her best friend, collecting Star Wars, The Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast memorabilia, and playing with the most beautiful, adorable, brilliant grandkids in the world.
Madeline started writing when her children were still at home, and she wrote for several years, finding time to write after her children were in bed and her husband was at work. In true cliché fashion, she wrote the books and put them under the bed, never telling anyone what she was doing, until one day she let a friend read one. Encouraged by her friend's comments, and armed with a copy of Writer's Market supplied by said friend, Madeline began sending out query letters. After six years and 31 rejections, Leisure Books bought Reckless Heart, and she's been writing ever since. After writing several Westerns, Madeline decided to try her hand at something else and wrote her first vampire romance. It was a short story titled "Masquerade" for an anthology. She loved writing that so much that she wrote her first full-length vampire romance, Embrace the Night, and thus Amanda Ashley was born. One of her dreams had been to write for Harlequin, and she accomplished that in 2003 with the publication of her Silhouette Romance novel, Dude Ranch Bride. Madeline loves to hear from her readers. i’ll admit, I didn’t realize that this was another time travel romance. I mean, I like some time travel romances, but ultimately I think that people who are born and lived during the same time are the best suited for one another. Maybe that’s just me though. In any case, I’ll check this down to a lured by a pretty covered shelf. That’s about it.
I am a sucker for time travel and like to see how the characters deal with the changes. So for that alone I was bound to like this story. It was interesting to read about a different way of life. I felt the author managed to tie in the loose ends of her story quite well. My only complaint was the writing style was far to expository for my tastes.
I am half-hearted about the novel. There are some beautiful moments, and an important message about the endurance of the Cheyenne culture... but the pacing was too uneven and the chemistry between the main characters did not entirely convince me. The writing style was very much "telling" rather than 'showing'. I guess it was a little old school. I would have probably loved this book 25 years ago. Today however I was desperate to finish it, and move on.
Are usually do not like back to the future books or anything to do with coming back-and-forth however this novel really blew my mind it was very well written kept my attention hardly could put the book down it was very hard when I had to I loved the story Michael was some man and I loved it when he fell in love with the Lena and I think Madeline you got the right ending I just wish it was a little longer but then again maybe not maybe it was just right I just hated to let it go I wanted to be there only with the Sioux my people. ......
I just love your stories and yes you pick the ending for this story I wouldn't have want it enough other way. I just love your books, and have read 5 or 6 books in a row, I just can't get enough of them, Thank you again , I loved the history that you have us, I have always thought the way the Indians were robbed of their land and the way they were treated was wrong, they had not asked for much, and who did the white man think that they were God to treat them the way they did was wrong. Thank you again for a beautiful story. Ada G.
I fell on love with this artist when i was a teen reading Lakota Love Song. I fell in love with that story and i loved her other stories but this one is as close as I've ever come to feeling like when i read that first story from her. This story was so beautiful!!!!
To be a warrior in the 20th century was hard, but thru a strong belief a Cheyenne warrior was born. If we forget our roots we are only part of ourselves. Find your path and become a whole person. This story takes us thru the life of a man , becoming a warrior and finding peace and love in his world.
I really like this book, and have read it several times. Is it a genius story that redefines its genre? No. Is it a good, angst-less story to read when I need something other than my usual, brainless and simple? Very much yes. Also, I'd sell my soul for time travel, so there's that, too. Definitely worth a read (and several rereads)!
I think if I were still in 8th-9th grade picking up my first historical romances I would have liked this one a lot more. There was just far too much reliance on telling rather than showing and it made it difficult to buy into the romance. I was also exceptionally thrown by the double time traveling-- it made the first time and the initial romance with Winter Song seem incredibly unimportant.
What would you expect, when two people from different cultures meet? All the elements were there, difficulty, perseverance, and a love so strong, even traveling through time couldn't keep them apart. An excellent read.
This is the second wind book of Madeleine s l made read and l have found them very different but have really enjoyed them and found them fascinating. Really good reading
I enjoyed this book very much. But you need to understand the first part before moving on. I ended up re reading the first chapter to figure out what was going on.

I’m a big fan of westerns and historicals, so I always love to jump at the chance to read a combination of both. But, what I look for when I read them is the ability for the author draw me so completely into the story line with the characters that I feel as if I’ve gone back to that particular time period. This author creates just such a story but with a time travel twist. I truly had a wonderful experience reading this novel!
Michael Wolf is a wonderful character! I loved the way Ms. Baker chiseled him. He was a character that instantly stole my heart and hasn’t given it back yet. Watching him with his realizations of love and the decisions he had to make in honoring his grandfather’s wishes was both enlightening and emotional. I truly could feel his inner struggles!
Elayna. Now there is a character I won’t soon forget. Her emotions were truly strong! I loved watching her overcome her fear. When she was taken captive, I truly felt her turmoil. It was very gripping!
Ms. Baker has made a forever fan out of me, for sure! I am happy to add this to my long list of re-reads. From history, to love and inner struggles, this book has it all. With ups and downs, and lots of great scenes, this author is a wonderful one and definitely get high recommendations from this reader! Fabulous job, Ms. Baker!
I LOVED this book, beautiful story, and would definitely read it again, it's a keeper! Native American romance is a favorite of mine, and the time travel factor just increased my enjoyment. My reviews are basic, don't intend to take a book apart chapter by chapter, don't think that's necessary to rate a book. I never lost interest, and became totally involved in the story..total enjoyment, what more can I say? I would give it 4.5 stars if I could!
This is the first time travel book I've actually enjoyed. I could not decide if I liked the ending but then when the author admitted struggling with the ending I liked it more! MB I'm just not sure! After reading the various ideas....jeez! I'll ponder it, for sure. Great book! Definitely recommended!
Absolutely loved this book. Never been a fan of time travel, but this book is nothing like the others. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Native American type books. Couldn't put it down. Wish there was a second book to this. Love the ending as well.
