Too Many Moose

Rate this book
Everyone Needs At Least One More Moose
When Martha decided she must have a pet,
she marveled and mulled over what she should get.
But much of the choices made Martha quite glum…
instead of magnificent, most were humdrum.
And just as it seemed like it might be no use…
she made up her mind that she must have one...
moose!

When Martha gets an unusual pet, she's delighted by all of the fun things they do together. If one moose is this marvelous, then more moose must be even better! Pretty soon, Martha has more moose than she can handle in this playful pet story.

A memorable, masterful story that is melodious, metrical, mesmerizing, merry and amazing.

My children immediately picked up on the alliteration throughout the book. “Mom, did you notice that the moose spend all their time doing M things?” This is a whimsical tale of a girl who mail orders a pet moose. It is so fun to read because of the rhyming, alliteration and poetic format. The illustrations are a perfect fit. They, too, are cheerful and comical. This book is pure delight. I give it 5 stars and would recommend it to all 3-8 year olds!

Thank you so much to netgalley, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, and Lisa Bakos for an ARC of this book!

Read yet again for my 365 Kids Book challenge. You can see all the books on their own shelf. Even as I am trying to catch up on my backlog of reviews in order to clear the TBR shelves for monsters, murder, and suchlike for the two months of All Hallow's Read and Halloween Bingo, I walked out of my libraries yesterday with more books than I could carry into the house in one trip.

Demonstrating once again that it is possible to have too much of a good thing, assuming you consider moose to be a good thing. Which they are, apparently: they make charming friends and they prepare delicious treats. Moose walking around on their hind legs doing things, anything, really, is adorable.

Martha did a lot of research before choosing a pet for herself, that's why it is not surprising at all the fact that she found the best pet ever: a moose! Having a moose is so much fun! They went to the movies, swung in the garden, and had some manicure. Martha felt so happy she decided to order more moose. The pool is so much fun with all these moose! What about ordering a few more? They ate spaghetti and baked muffins, so Martha thought "the more moose the merrier" and she ordered eve more moose!

And of course the obvious happened... Martha's house got crowded, dirty noisy and messy. Maybe there is such thing as too many moose after all!

An amusing rhymed story, full of words beginning with m, and super funny illustrations. I would say if you enjoyed books like "If you give a mouse a cookie", you will probably have a good time reading this one to your little ones.

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When Martha decides she wants a pet she investigates to see what would be the best pet to get. She finally decides on a moose and orders one from a mail order catalogue. They have such fun that she decides more would be better, until, they make a mess and she sends all but one back where they came from.

This is a fun and silly rhyming story that little ones will enjoy while learning about the letter "m". I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

What a fun story! Good rhymes teach words that start with the letter M, and the artwork is bright and happy.

The art work is wonderful, with lots of funny details. The text? Well, it has sequences with many marvelous strings of multiple "m" words, but they end suddenly each time in a line that COULD have had "m" words, but doesn't, which spoils the fun. The rhymes do work, but the plot is sort of limp--WHY do the moose run amok? Is there a critical number of moose that causes it?

Cute, but somehow not as a-moosing (sorry) as it could be.

This is a bright colorful picture book that tells the story of Martha who wants a pet, and after consulting many books, settles on a Moose.

Here she is when she has one moose.

 photo Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 3.51.27 PM_zpsnycd5lri.png

And she finds she loves having one moose, well then, why not have more. And so, she orders more and more moose.

And here she is with her army of moose.

 photo Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 3.52.40 PM_zpsu7yamgw7.png

But, just as in Star Trek where too many tribbles caused problems, the same thing happens with the moose, and so the girl had to send them all packing. All but her original moose. The end.

Lovely use of alliteration. I do think this book would make a good story time book, as the letters fall off the tongue. I would recommend it for bedtime stories or group reads with a teacher or librarian.

Does it make sense that the girl is allowed to keep ordering moose? Does it make sense that there are no parents around to ask what is going on? Does it make sense that moose want to mamba all night. Nope, none of it does. It is just a silly fun book, and it doesn't have to make sense.

Thanks to NetGalley for making this book available for an hones review.

You have to love any story that starts off with some serious research. Martha wants to get a pet, so she consults books on all sorts of animals. After careful consideration, she chooses a moose and buys one through mail order. They have so much fun after her moose arrives, that Martha orders more and more and more. The wide range of activities Martha and her moose enjoy is mind-boggling. They swim, they go to the movies, they get manicures, they have a luau, and on and on. But there really can be too much of a good thing. What will Martha do when things reach that point?

The rhyming text of the story is fun and the action is imaginative. The illustrations capture all the whimsy and humor. The first time we see a moose in the story it is being wheeled on a dolly by a mailman. The moose is wrapped in brown paper and has a "Fragile" sticker on its nose. But the visual fun doesn't stop there. Seeing the moose in nail polish or tropical print shirts, baking cupcakes and stacking them into a giant pyramid, or dancing around a tiki statue will have readers laughing out loud.

This will be a new favorite for children and parents who enjoy rhyming stories, especially since it has the recurring sentences, "The mailman delivered her new moose midday. She signed with an M and they all marched away." Even children who are too young to read on their own will recognize that every time they see Martha holding the clipboard, it is time to chime in with those words. It could also be used as part of a unit on pets with elementary students, placed with humorous animal stories such as If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, or read aloud to open a discussion on irregular nouns. Why don't we say "mooses" or even "meese"? It will be a sure hit however it is shared.

I read an e-book provided by the publisher through NetGalley.

Too Many Moose is a picturebook by Lisa Bakos which is currently scheduled for release on July 1 2016. When Martha gets an unusual pet, she’s delighted by all of the fun things they do together! The shared an umbrella, They sipped maple tea. They carved hearts and ‘Ms on a mulberry tree. If one moose is this marvelous, then more must be better! So, Martha quite merrily orders one more, then one more and one more and one more and so on until she’s in a major mess!

Too Many Moose is a rhyming picturebook that flows very nicely. It did not run into the trouble that comes from forcing rhymes, it just worked really well. Similarly the illustrations with very well done, the colors and details added a great deal to the story without being overstated or distracting. I really liked how Martha did plenty of research before picking a pet, and that she picked something unusual and fun.I love the details about the activities Martha and her moose do together, and the eventually understanding that more is not always better. Martha thinks that if one moose, or two, or more is great; than even more must be even better. It is only when the moose overrun and destroy everything else she cares about that she sees that one mail order moose is enough. My only worry is my daughter now wanting a moose, thankfully I think that would be a short argument because I think moose are not nearly as cuddly as the pets we already own, or those she will really push for in the future.

Too Many Moose is a silly, fun book that would be great for reading together one on one or sharing during storytime. The rhymes and artwork are wonderful, although I worry for animal fans and real moose because moose are really not the best of pets.

"The More Moose the Merrier!"

Kids' picture books have gotten pricey enough that I've gotten a bit choosey. I'm happy to say that, at least for me, this book passed the big tests. First, the drawings are funny, appealing, cheerful and engaging. Martha and all of the Moose are friendly and inviting.

Next, the rhyming text has a comfy and manageable meter and rhyme scheme that suits a little kid read aloud. Rhymes aren't forced, but the writing isn't "sing song" either. The overall effect is clever and playful.

Finally, (and I'm sorry if this sounds a little sour), the story itself, (Martha loves her first Moose so much she collects Too Many), is clear and amusing, and doesn't wander off into some odd, cryptic or ambiguous territory. Some picture books just have odd, confusing or distracting messages that can knock you out of the moment, but there's nothing like that here.

This is cheerful and upbeat stuff. Martha is a happy, resourceful, fun loving kid. She and her Moose have a good time doing kid-friendly and Moose-friendly things. There is a lot of sly and silly fun built into some of the unexpected things, (getting a manicure, baking muffins, going swimming, generally doing a lot of "M" things), that Martha and the Moose do. Along the same lines, there are lots of little jokes built into the drawings, (the delivered Moose has a "Fragile" sticker on his nose), that make it fun as a look-at-together.

So, this ended up being a happy and entertaining find, and a nice rhyming little reader choice.

(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

I received a digital copy of this title from the publisher via Netgalley.

Ten Second Synopsis:
Martha orders a moose. Then another. Then four more. Things get out of hand.

Grab this book for more moose than you can handle and an endearing, and extremely funny, animal romp. This book is so delightful I could barely handle all the excited frollicking that goes on throughout. Martha, heartened by the success of ordering one moose from a catalogue, falls into that trap for young players at online shopping and ends up with an unwieldy amount of moose. She eventually finds a solution that suits everybody and all is well, but in the meantime, things get a little hairy around Martha's house. I am always impressed with illustrators who can make such hilarious facial expressions on animal characters, and Martha is a wonderfully independent little soul and, in the end, a responsible pet owner.

I absolutely loved this tale. The rhyme and rhythm is spot on for reading aloud and little ones will appreciate the repeated refrains throughout. The illustrations are just perfect and the scenes of frivolity (until things go bad, of course) make one wish one had a pet moose of one's own! I predict that this will be high on the request list of many a bedtime reading rotation. Highly recommended.

Martha wants a pet and after much research and deliberation she decides to order a moose. She and her moose do so many wonderful activities together and have so much fun that she decides that it would be even better with two moose! Or four! Or more! She has such a marvelous time with her moose until her moose runs amok! With too many moose to handle, Martha has to make a hard decision.

This was a very fun picture book. Martha has her hands full with her many moose. It's all fun and games at first but then things start to get out of hand. If one moose seems like a strange pet to have, try ten! Things are sure to get messy with that many pets.

The illustrations are comical and colorful and the rhymes are very fun. There's excess use of the letter M and words that start with M so this would be a great read for young children learning about M words. I think any child would really enjoy this.

This was a very cute story that my son (3.5) aND I both enjoyed. It was marvelous. ;)

The illustrations were quirky and fun, and had plenty of color, which is something that I rather like in a children's book.

The use of M-words was actually a pleasant surprise and it was very well done. As were the rhymes and rhythm of the text. I also couldn't help but appreciate the subtle teaching of moose singular and moose plural.

The story itself was both sweet and silly, blended expertly!

This book is adorable. It's completely ridiculous, nonsensical, and fun. Martha uses a catalog to determine what pet she should get, and she chooses a moose. When it comes, they do all kinds of crazy things together, and she loves it. So she orders 3 more moose. It's even more fun, so she orders more and more. You get the idea. Then it's too much, so she sends all but one back.

The story is told in rhymes, so this book would make an excellent read aloud. The illustrations are fun and whimsical with many scenes on most pages. It's a bit long, so it would work better for ages 3 and up, but it's a really fun read as long as you don't mind pointless books.

The alliterations and rhyme scheme of this book make it. What a silly story. Martha wants a pet, but what pet to get? Ultimately she decides that she wants a moose, and she gets online, and orders one. Having one moose is so wonderful that she orders more and more and more. But when her moose run amok she decides that maybe one moose is just enough. The illustrations are funny and colorful—with expressive moose in every shade of brown.

This is a marvelously sweet book about a little girl who decides the perfect pet for her is a moose. After ordering one moose and seeing what fun he is, she orders another... and another... until suddenly it appears to be a moose-stake to have so many moose around!

My son really enjoys this story and the illustrations are awesome (including hidden postage throughout the pages!). He loves the alliteration of the letter "M" and the repetition throughout (so he can recite the pages along with mom!). We also are able to work on concepts such as counting and rhymes. And, the book isn't so long that younger kids can't enjoy it too! A great read for pre-k through early elementary!

TOO MANY MOOSE by Lisa M. Bakos is an adorable picture book about a girl who mail-orders moose.

When Martha decides it would be fun to have a pet moose, she orders one through the mail. She soon decides that multiple moose would be even more fun.

Librarians will find children drawn to both the engaging illustrations as well as the fun alliteration. This humorous predictable book will be a hit with both teachers and children who enjoy the rhythm of repeated story elements.

Cute. Rhyming wasn't too bad. Some bigger words occasionally, which can be fun to teach as you read. Preschool would probably enjoy, especially in a lap-read when they can look up close at the pictures. I think school-age would enjoy. The ending was not quite to my taste. Not bad, but.... Yeah, don't know how to describe that. But the end papers made me smile!

(Got this as an ARC at PLA 2016; plan to give it to my friend who is obsessed with moose.)

"The more moose the merrier!" Martha exclaimed. There's much more to moose than the catalog claimed.

Her first moose is so fun that Martha decides to order more ... and more ... and more. But when all of Martha's moose run amok, she decides maybe there is such a thing as too many moose.

A delightful cadence to the rhyming text and repeating passages will make this a fun, participatory read aloud.

An adorable romp through a young girl's adventure using the postal system to acquire a herd of moose...one at a time! Engaging rhyming text and catchy literary devices (alliteration, single and collective noun applications) and whimsical illustrations make this book another winner from Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, the publisher of some of the finest picture books that can be found. Highly recommended for storytime, bedtime, and classroom; a delight!

Martha has done her research and is finally ready to pick a pet. She chooses a... Moose. Yes, you read that correctly: a moose. Well, she has such fun with one, why not order several more? Eventually she realizes that 10 moose in the house is a bit much and ships all but one back where they came from. One moose is just right.

A bit long for storytime and a few too many m words for preschool kids to follow. Highly recommended for one-on-one reading.

This was an adorable children's book about the danger of having too much of a good thing. The characters were sweet, the drawings were well-done, and the rhyming M's were the perfect touch.

My children (7 and 9) both enjoyed the book and immediately asked for it to be read again. That's when you know you'd done well!

Sweet and funny story about a girl with a moose problem. Martha ordered one moose via mail as a pet. She had so much fun that she ordered three more, then three more, then three more. Now Martha had too many moose. They were creating havoc until Martha decided to send them all back. The mailman came to pick up her moose, all but one... Martha kept her original moose!

If I were still teaching, I would use this book to teach the letter M and words that start with M, to teach when too much of a good thing is not good, and what is important when making a choice and decision. Lots of fun things to do with this book even creating other stories as a group with letters and animals.
