Cartas sobre Cézanne
En el año 1907 vio Rainer María Rilke en el Salon Automne de París la exposición conmemorativa de Cézanne, que había fallecido en Aix-en-Provence en 1906. Bajo la impresión que le produjo esta exposición, escribió diariamente una serie de cartas a su mujer (desde el seis hasta el veinticuatro de octubre de 1907), de las que se trasluce que el conocimiento del arte del pintor produjo en Rilke una conmoción más importante que la suscitada por el encuentro con Rodin. Hasta sus últimos años persistió en reconocer el poeta que la obra de Cézanne había sido su principal modelo. La publicación de las cartas excede en su significación -pese a las numerosas y asombrosas intuiciones artísticas que contienen- los límites de la historia del arte; intuiciones o perspectivas las de Rilke que hasta tal punto se anticipan al posterior saber acerca del pintor Cezanne, que Katharina Kippernberg llega a decir que el historiador del arte deberá, avergonzado, retirarse de escena. Sin embargo, la enseñanza que el poeta extrae del conocimiento de la obra de Cézanne de ningún modo la erige en dogma artístico.
