In the aftermath of a deadly alien invasion, a band of survivors fights on…
Roth Masters is a protector to the bone. Driven by the losses of his past, he fights side-by-side with Hell Squad to protect the human survivors of the alien invasion. As leader of Squad Nine, he and his team are known for their perfect timing in a firefight. But Roth knows they need more intel on the raptor invaders—something to turn the tide of the battle. And he knows the woman he rescued from an alien facility is hiding secrets he desperately wants to uncover.
Former Coalition Central Intelligence Agent Avery Stillman is still adjusting to her new life. Left with terrible gaps in her memory, she has vague recollections of failed negotiations with the aliens, the invasion, and after that…nothing. Until a hard-bodied soldier pulled her from a tank in an alien lab. Now she’s trying desperately to remember, to help fight back, and also battling the crazy attraction to the man who keeps pushing her for things she can’t remember.
Soon Roth finds himself torn between his duty and keeping the strong woman he’s falling for safe. As the pair head into alien territory to investigate, they are attacked and crash land alone, far from base. They have to work together to survive the aliens, but when Avery finally remembers everything…her secrets could annihilate all they hold dear.

Finally we get inside the very private life of Roth the seriously formidable leader of Squad Nine and wow what a rush this story is ! Ms Hackett has come up with a fabulous addition to her Hell Squad series featuring those humans who have banded together in the Blue Mountain military installation . Constantly taking on the aliens who have invaded Earth these brave men and women still have time to play but for Roth there's only one woman who really appeals but is she really friend or foe? Avery was an agent for the Coalition and indeed was in the front line when initial contact with the Gizzida was made. She was found by Roth in an experimental tank but claims to have little to no memory of just how she came to be in the aliens laboratory. The gaps in Averys memory hold clues but accessing her memories is proving almost impossible. Step forward one very determined and obsessed Roth but it soon becomes apparent that safety within the complex might just have been compromised! This is by far my favourite book in this series. I do enjoy sci fi but it's usually the sort that features sexy aliens ( yes I'm a bit shallow!) and these books show just how loving and tough humans can be. Fast paced with great dialogue and white hot scenes that feel believable . The world is in chaos and it feels right to celebrate what life is left and these battle hardened troops sure know how to let their hair down! It's not all romance though as it's a very strong storyline that seems to be expanding with each book. It's almost as if the more the survivors learn about the enemy the more we as readers get drawn in. Gruesome creatures to make the reader squirm but as we learn in this story sometimes humans can be just as callous and maybe more so. I love the supporting characters and the dynamics really work very well. I suspect that technical genius Noah might feature next which would be awesome sauce! For now though I'm delighted to state that this fast, action packed story is very entertaining and I'm so pleased I found time to read it I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review
Roth is the leader of squad nine, the squad that's!mostly comprised of badass females. It takes a grwat man to lead women who can take him down anytime and not feel emasculated lol. I liked Roth and I especially liked that though "attitudes to sex had changed " he thankfully hadn't slept with the OW. Avery I also liked, she was a badass in her own right and stood up to Roth when necessary. The chemistry between them was hot but again something about the dirty talk in this series just comes across as awkward. Although this one was pretty short the plot thickens with some new discoveries and information that has me on the edge of my seat wondering what's coming next. Another win!
Series: Hell Squad #5 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Roth Masters is driven by the losses of his past. He is the leader of Squad Nine and fights for humanity's survival. Roth knows that a woman who was recently rescued might know more about the aliens than she has told. Former Coalition Central Intelligence Agent Avery Stillman is struggling to adjust to her new life. She has vague recollections of negotiating with the aliens but the gaps in her memory prevent her from knowing the whole truth.
There was so much new information in this book. We learn about the beginning of the alien invasion, some new survivors, and see new aliens. This book also features a different team, Squad Nine. It was nice getting to learn about another team and to see the different personalities in it, especially since this one is majority women.
“You’ve crawled under my skin. I think of you every damn minute of the day.”
Roth is a protective alpha male. He is a great leader who is dedicated to his team and the base. I loved watching him interact with his team because they are like one big family with him being a big brother almost. Avery is a strong kickass woman who is just trying to reclaim her past. Avery and Roth butt heads from the very beginning but that changes quickly once they start spending more time together. The anger quickly turns to lust and they both fall for each other. I really enjoyed these two because not only are they a kickass couple they also respect each other.
I cannot wait to learn more about Squad Nine and see the ladies fall in love.
Trigger warnings: death of family members in terrorists attack discussed; PTSD; survivors guilt;
Roth and Avery made a strong pairing. I especially liked Avery's kick-ass personality. What Avery remembered before the alien invasion is just unbelievable, but I think I can really see our politicians doing exactly the same thing if a situation like this ever happens.
Because I read these in one lovely distracting bunch, I’m going to review them the same way. If you like either science fiction romance or post-apocalyptic romance (or both), Anna Hackett’s Hell Squad series is a wonderful way to spend some time in a setting where you absolutely would not want to live. No matter how much fun it is to peek over the characters’ shoulders and see their lives!
One of the fun things about this series is that the ending of each story gives readers a sneak preview of who the main couple will be in the next book. So at the end of GabeGabe we all knew Reed was next. Likewise, Reed foreshadows Roth a bit, and Roth foreshadows Noah. And for those of us who are awaiting the next book with the proverbial bated breath, events at the end of Noah tell us that the next hero is Shaw, who looks like he is finally about to get his head out of his ass – if it doesn’t get handed to him first.
Back to our current three installments, Reed, Roth and Noah. This series so far has shown us two different romantic patterns. In Reed and Noah, just like in Gabe and Marcus we have a couple where the romantic leads are in an opposites attract mode – or at least surface opposites. In these stories, one party is a soldier, and the other is what passes for a civilian in this brave new world. Marcus’ Elle is a former society child turned communications officer, Gabe’s Emerson is the Base’s Chief Medical Officer. With Reed, the woman of his dreams is a scientist and former POW – one that he rescued from the alien’s experimental labs. The couple in Noah still maintains the pattern, but refreshingly reversed. Noah is Blue Mountain Base’s Chief Technologist, and his would-be lady is the Head of Security.
In all of these stories, we have two people who are absolutely certain that they must be wrong for each other, only to discover that they are absolutely right. Who they would have been before the invasion no longer matters. With the remnants of humanity barely holding their own against the reptilian Gizzida, the strength to survive and the need to find joy in the midst of insanity pretty much conquer all superficial differences. Eventually.
Watching these couples who would probably never even have met before the world ended find out they belong together is marvelous.
The story in Roth is similar to the romance in Cruz. Both of the people in the couple are warriors of one stripe or another. In Cruz, Santha is a warrior and a scout. In the case of Roth, the woman who haunts his dreams (in more ways than one) is Avery, who is not just a soldier but was also a member of the team that first negotiated with the Gizzida. As Avery finally recovers from her time as an alien test subject, her newly awakened memories reveal that it wasn’t just the Gizzida who were negotiating in bad faith – the humans were too. Or at least one human – the head honcho of the Human Coalition. The pressure is on Avery to remember everything she can about the traitor and his plans, because Blue Mountain Base is closely threatened by the aliens, and they need a Plan B – a safe place to retreat with all their people, both military and civilian. When Roth and Avery investigate potential bolt holes, they find one hell of a surprise, and a whole lot of hope.
Escape Rating A-: The deeper I get into this series, the more I see it as a science fiction romance/post-apocalyptic crossover. This is a near future Earth, but it is definitely a future. Before everything went to hell in the alien invasion handbasket, this was an Earth where we had finally created a peaceful world Coalition government. That’s an achievement that seems pretty far from where we sit today, on the heels of the terrorist attacks on Paris, Baghdad and Beirut last week.
Hell Squad is also post-apocalyptic without being ‘prepper’ fiction. No one expected an alien invasion. This isn’t about some group that finally had their paranoia justified. Blue Mountain Base was a military base that a lot of Coalition military knew existed. Once the squads start getting together, they go out to rescue other survivors. And of course there is a lot of word of mouth about a safe place that spreads virally among the remaining human population. People still trickle in, and survivors still get found, but fewer and fewer all the time. While I don’t generally like prepper fiction, I like Hell Squad because it focuses on the survival and not the paranoia.
The romances in this series drive the characters, and yet they don’t drive the story. The story is the different things that individuals do (and don’t do) in order to keep humanity alive. We keep learning more and more about the alien invasion, the aliens’ motivations, and finally, what went wrong. The chief characters in each book, the ones who find love amidst the chaos, do some things differently because they have found their own personal reason to live life to the fullest, but the story is about them all fighting the good and necessary fight against terrible odds.
One of the things in this part of the series that is now driving the action forward is that Plan B and the reason it exists in the first place. There has not been much in the series until now of humans acting evilly for evil’s sake or for self-aggrandizing, or even self-preservation, purposes. We finally get a glimpse of the dark side of humanity in Roth, as the Blue Mountain Base discovers that humanity was betrayed in return for a safe haven for a select few. Unlike the betrayal of the human race to the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, our evildoer in the Hell Squad series knows exactly what he’s doing when he sells out 99% of the human race to save himself and his selected elite.
We’ve seen the remnant of humanity at Blue Mountain Base survive. Now that they know what they are doing and why they are doing it, they know they have to do more to throw the Gizzida off our planet. As Emily St. John Mandel repeated in the awesome Station Eleven, quoting the Star Trek Voyager episode Survival Instinct, “Because survival is insufficient.”
It looks like that sentiment is going to drive the rest of the series. And I can’t wait.
Hoo-boy! Roth and his team are out there fighting the good fight against the aliens that have decimated earth. YOU GOTTA LOVE THE MEMBERS OF THE SQUADS, MAN. They're dogged in their determination to find a way to bring down the aliens and take their planet back.
As one of the squad leaders, Roth is on the front line. While he has the best interests of the survivors at heart, he's a little ham-handed when it comes to trying to get information out of Avery. Mostly because the blank spots in Avery's memory are as frustrating for him as they are for her. Honestly, they're probably a little more frustrating for her. Imagine knowing you had important intel locked away in your head and being unable to access it. Intel that could help save countless lives. NO FUN.
As always, the aliens get more deadly at every turn and the heroics of the survivors get more thrilling. When the world is burning around you, you have to grab onto life as hard and fast as you can. These Hell Squad couples do just that and it's GLORIOUS!
Roth and Avery! Avery is a trained negotiator and soldier. She was also saved by Hell Squad during one of their recon missions. She has memory loss and is trying hard to remember when the raptors attacked. Roth is the Leader of Squad 9 and helped hellsquad rescue the survivors during their last mission. They go on a mission and find a hidden Enclave of survivors. And the leader of the Coalition. Who she remembers committed a heinous crime against humanity, and sold her to the raptors.
This one is sexy, and I enjoyed the enemies to lovers vibe. However, I felt a bit more rest than the others for some reason. It definitely expanded on the world which I really liked.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrators did a good job. I'm enjoying this series and I like the each book is about a different couple. Each book also has a specific mission within this action packed series with a continuation story arc. I really enjoyed this story between Roth and Avery as things heat up with the aliens.
There's more than one happy ending in this action packed sci-fi romance. I absolutely loved it and can't wait for the next one.
I love Anna Hackett's books and have read quite a few of them. They never disappoint, and nor does this fantastic addition to the list of must read books. 'Roth' is the fifth book in the Hell Squad series and I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved this action packed romance set in and around the post alien invasion ruins of Sydney. I thought I'd just read a bit before breakfast, but it grabbed me on the first page and I really didn't want to put it down. I was so engrossed in this action packed story that I didn't notice the time passing or anything in the here and now until I got to the end, and I was left with a smile on my face and the distinct impression I'd not only missed breakfast, but lunch as well and it was getting dark. It's a good thing my partner can cook or I'd have missed dinner too.
Although this is a Hell Squad story, Roth Masters is actually the leader of Squad Nine, based at the Blue Mountain military facility. They do recon and provide back up on an almost daily basis for Squad Six, known to one and all as Hell Squad. Roth is angry, frustrated and desperately in need of something they can use to fight the Gizzida, the aliens who attacked Earth over a year ago. He thinks he knows who can help, but former Coalition Central Intelligence Special Agent Avery Stillman has a memory which is more like a Swiss cheese since she spent a year in an alien tank, and has blinding headaches every time she tries to remember what happened. She can't remember anything after the initial negotiations started and no amount of interrogation by Roth, the man who rescued her, will change that. But there is more going on between them than question and answer sessions, and they're both afraid to trust or care because of their past experiences.
I'm not going to give any spoilers, but this is an absolutely terrific book with everything you could possibly want. It has humour, strong alpha males, as well as strong alpha females who are some of the best and toughest soldiers around, action, aliens and other bad guys to fight, survivors to rescue, traitors to be found and a steamy love story with a happy ending. It has another happy ending too, but I'm not going to say what it is. It did leave a smile on my face though. I loved it and can't wait for the next one.
Roth, book 5 in the Hell squad series brings some details about the alien's reasons to invade and how the leaders from Earth reacted.
Roth is the leader of Squad 9 and from time to time he helps the Hell Squad. His team is mostly women. When Avery is taken out of the tank by Roth she fights him. Sparks fly but Roth keeps his distance since he is convinced Avey know more than she tells. Avery cannot remember much about her role in the invasion. She know she was part of the negotiations team but beyond that her mind is blank. Eventually with Avery memories, the Blue mountain base discovers that there is an enclave hidden and sheltered from the aliens.
With their story finally there is more added to the plot. Unfortunately the romance follows the same steps as the ones before. Even the intimate scenes feel like the are copied and pasted here. Roth is the same as all the alpha guys and Avery brings her set of skills to the team. The added benefit is the fact that the plot thickens. I like the fact that the secondary characters have a small part to play in the story because of gives the much needed action and background. Shaw and Claudia are entertaining as usual.
The irony is that i like the series but I don't love them because Anna Hackett doesn't push her limits to create a WOW world. It's just there.
Avery Stillman, the CCIA agent who was rescued from the Genesis facility, is frustrated by not remembering facts after her encounter with the aliens. She only remembers her role as leader of negotiations with the aliens, the rest is a blank. Roth Masters is the head of Squad Nine n feels that they r getting nowhere in their fight against the aliens. He's hoping that Avery has info on the aliens. Thru several interrogations n much yelling back n forth between the two, he finally understands her plight. A dangerous medical procedure n decoding an item retrieved from the aliens(with CCIA codes) help to unlock her memories. Her intel reveals a web of deceit n treachery by a devious character. There's never a dull moment in Anna's Hell Squad series n I'm looking forward to the next one.
It was good to have a story out of Hell Squad and with the leader of Squad Nine. A man who is a protector and knows what it’s like to lose loved ones. He’s butting heads with Avery, a former special agent. But there’s more there of course. Seeing these two strong people go putty for the other is a joy to read. The couple compliments the other.
We find out more about the world including the negotiations with the aliens when they’d turned up. The book has hot sex, high emotion and lots of action. For lovers of sci-fi romance for sure. Roll on Noah’s story.
Disclaimer: while I know the author personally, this doesn’t affect the star rating.
MY RATING GUIDE: 4 Stars. I enjoyed the content in ROTH more than the a few of the previous books in this series (but the Steam element was still quite high). Although I have read and enjoyed other Hackett novels, this is my first time reading this series
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I LIKED THIS ONE A LOT; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).
Blue Mountain enclave, approximately 1 year after the alien invasion of earth ~ ROTH, #5 picks up about a week after the previous book (REED) with current Squad 9 leader Col Roth Masters (former Army and Coalition Spec Ops soldier before the invasion) and his team flying aerial recon checks from their military designed Darkswift hang gliders. During their mission, they are attacked and are disheartened to discover additional alien creatures beyond which they’ve previously interacted are thriving in the smoldering ruins of earth - both in the air and in the water. Furthermore, MMC Roth believes recently rescued former Coalition CIA Special Agent and Negotiator Avery Stillman is hiding privileged information regarding the aliens - What do the aliens want? How were they able to attack earth without any initial resistance? How did they manage to annihilate everyone so quickly? Why did the military fail to respond? What exactly occurred at the highest level of government? Who was responsible for such a terrible failure to protect the world’s population? Although FMC Avery Stillman has suffered a temporary memory lapse following her terrible ordeal (book#4), Roth fully intends to get answers from her and without further delay. The Blue Mountain squads cannot fight the aliens forever. They require better information and Roth intends to get it from former Spec Agent Avery Stillman - with or without her cooperation.
Comments ~ 1) Although certain plot lines including governmental duplicity, hypocrisy and corruption (which seems sadly parallel to today’s reality), mostly ROTH is a dystopian novel. Readers who are willing to let go of reality, logical thinking, scientific facts and just settle in for the ride will find the most enjoyment in this series. 2) I thought ROTH contained more plot and action than intimacy scenes (IMO, a nice break from a few of the previous books). As a devoted reader of immersive Action Adventure novels and movies which entirely pull the reader into another place and time, I really appreciated the action and detailed settings. Romance is great, but I prefer a balance of more action/adventure and less detailed intimacy. 3) The Hell Squad books are very fast reading, great for a few hours of escape or to decompress after work. 4) ROTH can be read and enjoyed as a Standalone title (with no cliffhangers and its own HFN/HEA) but the connections between secondary characters previous introduced (in earlier books) and the series overall story arc will be missed. I prefer beginning with book one and continuing through the series in order. 5) Recommended to readers who enjoy: *Action/Adventure novels (and are okay with a number of steamy intimacy scenes). *Dystopian Romance novels (see above). *Escape fiction, such as Fantasy and Space Opera (see above). *Quick reading romance novels to insert between other genres and tropes (and are okay with light dystopian settings and steamy scenes)
READER CAUTION ~ Not recommended to YA readers or to those who prefer Clean fiction. PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. Detailed intimacy scenes occur between the 2 MCs beginning around the mid point (3 or so). I skim past them. VIOLENCE - PG. Involves military and aliens. Think Godzilla or Aliens. Not particularly dark or graphic.
Danger lurking everywhere Roth Masters is the leader of Squad 9. His squad is comprised mostly of lady badasses, all formidable warriors. On this mission, Squad 9 and Hell Squad hope to rescue human lab experiments; that’s where Roth meets feisty Avery Stillman. Avery was a top Coalition Central Intelligence agent negotiating with the alien Gizzida pre-invasion. When she finds that Coalition leadership was selling out humanity for personal benefit, Avery is turned over to the aliens. She was put into a tank filled with who knew what, to be “changed”. Avery’s rescued in time, but that trauma hits her hard. Roth is attracted to Avery but also thinks she has information vital to fighting the Gizzida. Avery knows she has dark spots in her memory that hide information critical for defeating the aliens, but she can’t get to it. Avery receives help in her recovery from many people at the Blue Mountain Base, and some of the information uncovered is threatening to the entire base. They need to relocate…fast. There’s lots of internal tension in this awesome story. I love these bold, strong, protective, wonderful characters. I loved Hell Squad so much that I AM RE-READING THE ENTIRE SERIES. On to book 6, Noah. Linda
Missing life before the Gizzada invasion when he was surrounded by love of friends and family was depressing and seeing Hell Squad coupled up was hard for Squad 9 leader Roth Masters. When not on a mission, Roth put his mind to reviewing the last one and planning the next one, he was certain former negotiator, Avery Stillman had information that could help.
Avery betrayed and given to the Gizzada’s for their labs early in the invasion has been trying to force her memory back without the gaps since Roth rescued her from a tank. She’s continuously distracted by the desire for touch, especially Roth’s touch. Avery also wants to remember to help the survivors, to be useful. Meanwhile, the aliens have begun circling the mountain housing the rebel base and evacuation drills begin.
A single memory knocks Avery off her feet and opens the door for their romance…with terms. A dangerous procedure helps Avery remember critical information, buying her a ticket on Roth’s recon mission. The pair are separated from the bulk of the team, Avery gets to prove her warrior is close to the surface with anger and partnering with Roth driving her forward. Rating: 4.5stars
Roth is leader of the mainly female kickass squad 9. He is hell bent on getting information out of Avery, she worked for the ccia prior to the invasion and knows about the aliens.
Avery remembers her life...she knows she has information on the aliens...she feels Roth’s frustration and accepts the blame for the deaths of Millions of people.... The only problem is she can’t remember... she has massive gaps in her memory and no amount of hounding from roth is going to make it come back?
Following an intrusive procedure to recall her memories, is turns out that the president ( Howell ) was playing dirty and looking out for himself by building an underground bunker ‘the enclave’ whilst agreeing to the slaughter of 1/3 of the population of earth. It also means that the aliens know about the blue mountain base! That the base is no longer safe and alternative plans must be secured to ensure they all survive.
Found this book to be a massive game changer in relation to the possibilities of what is going to happen next. Looking forward to reading more.
Hell Squad book 5. Roth is on Team Nine and usually assists Hell Squad. Roth and Avery. Avery is rescued from one of the aliens tanks. She has some memory loss but Roth needs answers especially since the base has been sort of infiltrated. She's an alpha and he's definitely an alpha now let the crazy chemistry begin. As the attraction between the two grows, so does suspicions. Avery goes through some meds to remember and when she does the cray cray begins on level 100. Her past meets up and fumbles hard into her present. At the same time we find out that everything isn't all good with the base. You will jump out your seat several times. Dramatic, sexy, twisty, action filled, and WTF angst.
Roth, the leader of squad 9 knows that recent arrival Avery was involved in high level meetings with the invaders prior to the devastating attacks that wiped out most of humanity, and he wants to know what she knows. Unfortunately, after being held prisoner by the aliens, Avery does not remember much, and it bothers her greatly. Through the course of the book, Avery gets her memory back and helps the group to realize that they are not safe, the aliens can find them, and the whole base has to move.
Serie super recomendada
She was Coalition Central Intelligence Agent Avery Stillman before the invasion. Taken by the Aliens and thrown into the tanks to be changed from Human to Alien. Rescued by Roth and Team Nine she is now trying to piece her memory together.
Roth is sure that Avery knows more than she's told so he keeps interrogating her. Hard to tell what's driving him concerning Avery is it hate or love.
While this series is good, the stories are getting a bit predictable. Each time the female has a talent and demands to be out near the aliens. Every single time. I did like that the story picks up with them contemplating a move in locations but per usual the damsel demands to go out with the teams because she “has too” and then ends up needing to be rescued. Here’s to hoping the next book is completely different.
I really recommend that you read this series in order to make sense of all that is going on in this world. I really liked this one. Roth and his team are funny and tough. All females except Roth and another male. Avery was intelligence. She can fight and shoot. She stands alone until Roth. Great story. Can't say much without spoiling everything. But. I really want a darkswift.
By this point in the series I am skipping the sex scenes, and for this one I honestly skipped most of the romance, too - it felt more than usually shoved in there (as the heroine points out, they don't even like each other really). The plot keeps moving along at a good clip, though, although at this point I practically just want the plotty non-romance version, which could probably be condensed into one or two normal-length books.
A survivor from the alien tank, Avery, and a soldier keen to find out her secrets. Here the action becomes more immediate as we find out the aliens have an agenda. Avery knows more but it is locked in her memory. To unlock it could prove dangerous but the aliens are coming closer to their base and Roth needs to find out what Avery knows. Love, treachery and suspense are all wrapped in this thrilling read.
