Beyond the Sea of Ice: The Voyages of Henry Hudson

Rate this book
"Where Goodman's book shines is the foldout maps and diagrams of the voyages and in the journal entries by Hudson and members of his crew ... When the next group of students with an assignment on explorers descends on the library, have this useful and attractive resource on hand."
--School Library Journal Beyond the Sea of The Voyages of Henry Hudson takes readers into a land of impenetrable fog and crushing ice, a mysterious place where lie the dreams of kings, merchants and learned geographers--a passage to the Orient. Sailing small wooden boats well above the Arctic Circle, guided by maps and charts that were based on rumor and hope as much as fact, and surrounded by crews that shared neither his belief nor his commitment, Henry Hudson searched again and again for what was not there. In 1611, his mutinous crew set him adrift on the freezing waters of the bay that would one day bear his name. Beyond the Sea of Ice is the story of Henry Hudson's four harrowing voyages of discovery. Bringing the skills of an experienced novelist, Goodman creates an epic narrative of Henry Hudson's passionate quest. Fernando Rangel's paintings capture the icy beauty of the North Atlantic, the lushness of the new world and the cruelty and death that accompanied a doomed voyage of discovery. Actual entries from the journals of each voyage bring the reader directly into life at sea in the 17th century, and Mikaya Press' exclusive gatefold Read-Along Map™ allows the reader to read about the explorer's travels while following them on a map at the same time.

Henry Hudson was an English explorer who explored Canada and the northeastern coast of the US in four voyages from 1607-1611. However, his goal had been to find a sea route to Asia, which he failed to do so, and his sailors mutinied against him on his last voyage as they waited for a rescue that never came. His crew set him, his son and other sick sailors loose in a small boat (in what is now called Hudson Bay) never to be seen again.

I was fascinated that at this point in history, there were so many limitations on what people knew about geography, thus Hudson's attempts to get to Asia were so off base and he came nowhere near success. He truly thought he could cut thru Canada to reach Asia, thus dooming himself, his son and many of his crew to death. During his earlier journies, he and his crew treated the Indigenous tribes they encountered with such cruelty, mirroring what so many other whites would also do from encounters hundreds of years ago to today. Always wanting to get the best of tribes, Hudson foolishly tried to barter hard with an Indigenous man while the crew miserably wintered in 1611, thus the man left and never returned with help.

The art by Fernando Rangel was excellent with maps and full-page illustrations showing the boat, plus the regions and people they encountered. Each of these Great Explorer books has included a pull-out map that has been helpful in following their journies. Author Joan Elizabeth Goodman crafted a well-researched book that is suitable for older youth in discovering more about forgotten periods of history.

Good read about Henry Hudson's voyages. I appreciate that the author mentioned the bigotry and cruelty of the voyagers to the native Americans they met during their travels. I read this with my 11 year old to complement our early modern history lesson about the Americas.

Doing research for my students' summer reading list. This was interesting. It's a picture book, but the vocabulary level is higher. It's a sad story-but the pictures are beautiful and there are some primary sources (diary entries--altered slightly for understanding) included. Don't think I'm going to use it for the list because there just isn't enough material there. It's only 48 pages and some of that is full page illustrations.

Henry Hudson actually has very little known about him, but Goodman manages to pull together an interesting life for the readers to follow. Henry Hudson was an explorer searching for a waterway to China around North America; he disappeared on his final voyage.
I read another one of Goodman’s books and was interested to find out that she had more, especially one on Henry Hudson. I had read another book that put an interesting life on the mysterious explorer. So I already knew what little information she managed to pull out of history. This book was very well put together, easy for kids to read, but it just didn’t interest me.

Overall very well written! We were really sucked into the story of Henry Hudson. I had no idea! Note: on the longer side. Be prepared.
