In his seventh book in The Swans Are Not Silent series, John Piper explores the lives of Charles Spurgeon, Hudson Taylor, and George Müller. Each of these men was known for extraordinary faith in God and untiring service to others. Each of them continues to motivate and inspire God's people even today.
Rooted in their nineteenth-century British context, these three giants encouraged one another in their ministries--Spurgeon in the church, Müller in orphan care, and Taylor in world missions. Even through intense adversity, the lives of each of these men display their shared confidence in the power of God and their love for his glory and goodness. As you read these stories, may you be inspired to hold fast to the promises of God as you press on in commitment to Christ's mission.

I read this mainly because I wanted to know more about Charles Spurgeon but really enjoyed reading about Muller and Hudson as well. I love biographies and this one is short but gives the reader a taste of these contemporaries and their similarities.
I've taken such encouragement from the messages this book comes from. The book is good, but I will probably revisit the conference messages before I revisit the book.
Short & impactful, Piper relies on the words of Charles Spurgeon, Hudson Taylor, and George Muller to demonstrate how the Scriptures fuel us for a life of faith, especially in the midst of suffering. This short work will spark your desire to learn more from the lives of these faithful men. Especially helpful for those who haven’t yet discovered the spiritual riches of Christian biography.
I found this book really encouraging- God will use anyone in amazing ways if they only take Him at His word. Wonderful to see three men who were unfailing in trusting God to provide for their needs and also to see that they all considered their greatest need to be the glory of Jesus Christ.
Good book to read at the start of the year as it shares how these 3 men lived faithfully, in the midst of trials, and persevered by God's grace. And now after a century, their ministries are still bearing fruit. Great encouragement to me.
What's better than reading a biography of one of my favorite 19th-century saints? How about reading three of them!
I've been a fan of John Piper's "The Swans Are Not Silent" series for some time. In each of these books, he unites three short biographies around a common theme. In this instance, all three men were contemporaries, who knew one another and supported one another's ministries (though this is not the case in each book in the series).
A Camaraderie of Confidence explores how God worked through difficult circumstances and remarkable ministry strategies (particularly in the realm of funding their missions) to glorify himself. Each of these men was incredibly gifted, and would likely have been successful in any venture he might have undertaken. But each led a life consumed with proclaiming the glory of God, which was displayed in their respective focuses of church (Spurgeon), orphan care (Müller), and world missions (Taylor).
I have read longer biographies of each of these three men, but still gained much from reading this book. Piper's narrow focus on certain similarities in their strategies and in their sufferings is quite effective at highlighting those areas in the reader's attention. For me, it was particularly encouraging seeing how each of these men set goals, cast vision, and worked tirelessly in pursuit of the work to which God had called them. Reading of the struggles these men faced both personally and professionally is fuel for endurance in trials I know that I'll face as well. Piper includes a great many quotes from the writing of each of these men, while also interspersing his own helpful commentary. A favorite example is Piper's counsel to young pastors about taking care of our bodies through proper diet and good sleep habits, "for the sake of your proper assessment of God and his promises" (p. 53).
If you're not into the habit of reading biographies, I highly recommend beginning with one of Piper's "swans" books. They are easily digestible, highly applicable, and can generally be read in a few short sittings. You can grab a copy of A Camaraderie of Confidencehere, and any (or all!) of the other six books in the series here.
As a bonus, here's a video of Piper explaining why he loves writing "The Swans Are Not Silent" books, and speaking to the value of biographies in general:
Amazing, soul-stirring read. Highlights and underlines like crazy. Piper is a brilliant writer but never expected him to be such a good writer of a biography!
Took one star away just because I got the impression that he was trying a little too hard to make sure the reader knew the fact that these men (though he wasn’t 100% sure about Hudson Taylor) were Calvinists. It’s totally fine that they believed these things and if it was a big part of their life than it’s worth mentioning. While I agree that Calvinism or any other doctrinal beliefs that you hold should produce joy in Christ and deeper worship of Him, the fact that they subscribed to these doctrines isn’t the source of true joy; Christ is. At some points the reader can get the impression that if you’re not a Calvinist than you won’t have this kind of joy (although it most likely wasn’t his intention).
He totally clarifies this towards the end of the book though and Christ was the focal point and the main hero FOR SURE! What I love about Piper is his passion for taking the bible seriously and glorifying Christ. So overall, amazing book. Thankful for Piper.
The final book in the series from John Piper covering figures from church history specifically related to the spread of Christianity and the Reformed theological system, this book is just as good as the others in the series. What does it mean to follow Jesus when times are good? This is not the book for that. What does it mean to follow God when times are hard, but faith us great? That is what is on display by John Piper in this book covering the lives of the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon, the famous pray-er and raiser of orphans without asking for a penny, George Muller, and the famous missionary, Hudson Taylor. All of these historic figures are looked at briefly, but with an eye to the glory of God on display in each of their lives. This book is both an encouragement and admonishment to take God at His Word and to have faith no matter what comes at you in this life.
This is basically three short biographies in one: that of Charles Spurgeon, George Muller, and Hudson Taylor. It’s not a long book, but it went a long way in inspiring and encouraging me to trust God, come what may. All three men endured hardships very few of us today endure, but those hardships only grew their faith. The death of their wives, their children, and much physical pain and diseases brought them to a deeper understanding and appreciation for Christ. Hudson Taylor’s found the true meaning of his “union with Christ” through trials sovereignty placed in his life by God.
Three men, three faiths in one mighty God. What an inspiration! Five stars for three real life stories, told in the eloquence of both their own words, and John Piper’s words. I loved it!
Piper writes about the lives of Spurgeon, Muller, and Taylor and how they demonstrated faith in God in all circumstances. Reading these kinds of books are so encouraging; it's like getting a blood transfusion that gives greater strength and zeal to my own faith. I can't wait to meet these saints in heaven! My only quibble with these books is that they composed of mostly short quotes from the men's own writings with Piper's commentary tying things together--I would like to hear longer excerpts. Then again, I COULD just go on to read those books, and this does serve as an excellent introduction to their work and ministry.
Very good book. 128 pgs. A fairly easy read. I read it in 3 days. This small book shares the lives of 3 generals of the faith. Charles Spurgeon, George Muller and Hudson Taylor. Each short autobiography details their personal life and their ministries. Also the adversities they overcame through their lives and ministries as well. A very good read for someone seeking ministry or already in ministry. The book has lots of quotes and excerpts from each individual. My personal favorite autobiography in the book was Charles Spurgeon. He shares of his severe bouts of depression through his life of ministry and how he depended on God through those times. I enjoyed the book very much.
This is the first book I’ve read by John Piper. It was actually given to me, by a Pastor friend of mine.
The biography of Charles Spurgeon’s life was compelling and easy to read. It is interesting that some of the most well know theologians experienced tremendous depression.
This book also introduced me to the persons of Müller and Taylor. Their friendship with Spurgeon, and evangelistic efforts will be an encouragement to you as you read this. This book is a biography of three men, and the main theme that Piper uses to tie these men together is: “A Camaraderie of Confidence”. I hope you can trust in the Sovereignty of God like these men did.

This book became part of my morning time to turn my eyes to Jesus after I had already spent time in His Word and writing. I think biographies of past believers who finished the race well are such a necessity. This is why the Hall of Faith, I believe, in Hebrews 11 exists isn’t it? It is good for us to see those who are walking by faith and are trusting in God Almighty and we be influenced with sparks of boldness! Then that we would become those people to others. This is the circle of discipleship. May our lives display the goodness and glory of God for all to see.
This is more of a biography of the faith (rather than the life stories) of three nineteenth century British evangelical Christians who knew and were inspired by one another. One of the characteristics of their ministries was that they refused to go into debt, but instead trusted God to supply their needs. Among other issues of faith, their thoughts on finances and on suffering are examined by Piper.
“None of them had a theological degree.” p. 30, “This was the chief passion and unifying aim of Muller’s ministry: to live a life and lead a ministry in a way that proves God is real, God is trustworthy, and God answers prayer.” p. 71, “God is always doing more than we know.” p. 17, “Not only does God in Christ take people as they are: He takes them in order to transform them into what He wants them to be.” p. 14
Short biographies of Faithful, Flawed, and Fruitful Christians throughout church history. Wonderful theological and practical reflections. Highly recommend!
Reading this has convinced me to strive to always be reading a Christian biography. It has been so helpful to my worship of the Lord, and as examples worth learning from both from the good and the bad.
This is truly a great book. I have read each of the 7 books in this series and they are all excellent. I believe that biographies are important for Christians to read. We see the work of God in the past. The psalmists and prophets were constantly reminding the people of Israel of God's faithfulness in the past through His servants like Moses and David. Those are also important for our admonition and as examples. Biographies of great servants of the Lord can also have a similar effect on us.
Encouraging read, and nice and short too - concise also, which, if I can say it, might not usually be John Piper’s forte in writing. The subject is Charles Spurgeon, George Muller, Hudson Taylor and the confidence in Christ they shared. All three men endured tremendous suffering and yet produced tremendous fruit. I recommend this book.
Piper dives briefly into the lives of Spurgeon, Müller and Taylor, giving the reader an idea of their lives and ministry. Very easy to read and very inspiring. Yet these men were not perfect nor were their ways perfect, but they glorified Christ and they show us how we can glorify Christ too!
A quick taste of the ministries of three men: Charles Spurgeon, George Mueller, and Hudson Taylor. What does it look like to live according to the belief that God is sufficient for the work of ministry? Here are three powerful examples.
I especially enjoyed the chapter on Spurgeon, reflecting on the challenge of humility and confidence in light of public criticism he received.
I wasn’t aware of the Swans Are Not Silent series before recently, when I found this volume on Spurgeon, Muller, and Taylor. Short, anecdotal, pastoral, edifying. I look forward to reading Piper’s other essays on the swans of Church history.
P.S. The Spurgeon chapter proved to be one of the best pieces on pastoral endurance I’ve read to date.
I'm so glad that Piper has written this series. These three biographies were all brilliantly constructed and very well researched. This volume has successfully strengthened my faith and encouraged me
A concise, 3-in-1 biography on giants of the Christian faith: Spurgeon, Muller, and Taylor. Compelling, convicting look at their lives lived in dedication to God being glorified through their efforts. "God's work done God's way will never lack God's supplies"
Excellent highlights and nuggets of truth from 3 Godly men!
Short, but power highlights of 3 Godly hero's of the Faith... Charles Spurgeon, George Muller, Hudson Taylor. Some powerful life lessons to be learned and reminded of.
All of these Piper bio books are great and this one is no exception. Here we have three men who faced unbelievable challenges but persevered through confidence in God to preach, care for orphans, and working in missions.
