A sizzling hot, standalone BBW dragon shifter romance. No cliffhangers!
Zoe Chant loves writing paranormal romance. Over a cup of tea (or something stronger) she whips up sexy tales of hunky heroes and adventurous heroines to tantalize and satisfy her readers. Sizzling hot romance, no cliffhangers!
While series should ideally be read in order, all of Zoe’s books are standalones and can be read in any order. This includes books within series.
This one wasn't as good for me as the first one which was a tad disappointing as I love Dragons, though having said that it was still a quick and easy read, especially since I think it finished at 91%? Didn't mind the h, quite brave as she helped rescue the H. Story line was ok, didn't get to see or hear much from previous characters of Protection Inc.
Lucas is the Crown Prince of Brandusa and is supposed to get married "for the good of the country." Reluca is his betrothed and is also unhappy about the betrothal. Both are dragons and hope to find their mate before the wedding; if one or both do, neither will have to marry each other. For the past 5 years, Lucas has worked for Protection, Inc. He goes to Brandusa for the wedding. While at his betrothal party he meets his mate, having thought he would not find his mate in time. Journey is backpacking across Europe and out of money is on her way back to the US and her small town in ND. They meet at the betrayal ball. Insta-love (fated mate). There is kidnapping & torture (Lucas), betrayal, and a rescue (Journey) thrown in. Nice wrap-up with a HEA. And 2 thrown renouncements. I liked Reluca and how supportive she was of Lucas and Journey. Would not mind reading her story. RBSB- Dragons
Five years ago dragon shifter Lucas left his royal life behind on a quest to find his fated mate. Since he didn't find her, he is now required to return to his home country and the arranged marriage he left behind. Except at his engagement ball, Lucas meets American au pair Journey, and realizes they are meant to be together. However, many people have a stake in ensuring the royal marriage goes through -- even if they have to kill Journey to do it.
Zoe Chant is a master at packing a lot of story and character development into a short novel. The pacing is perfect, and the story never feels rushed. The villainous characters and their treaties are shallow, and more about them and their actions would have made this a better book, but otherwise it's really great.
Dragon shifter, Lucas, is a prince in another country facing an arranged marriage that's supposed to benefit his country and that of his arranged fiancée. The only way out is to find his mate which he hasn't done in the last 5 years. However, on the night of his engagement party he meets Journey Jacobson who's very much his mate. Since she left the ball he's given one month to being her forward but someone doesn't want that that to happen. Lucas prevents an attack on her life but is later taken prisoner. Can Lucas and Journey make it through everything coming their way to make a life of their own?
I really enjoyed this book which was well-written with great characters, both those you like and those you don't. I highly recommend both it and the series which I'm looking forward to.
Title: Defender Dragon Series: Protection, Inc Designation: Book Two of Series, Standalone Novella Author: Zoe Chant Reading Platform: Kindle Unlimited My Rating: FIVE DELIGHTFUL STARS Wow! Another home run! Zoe Chant continues the thrilling fast-paced adventure with Defender Dragon, the second release in her brand new Protector, Inc Series and I'm still impressed! I'm now officially a fan! Although each release is a standalone novella featuring a different member of the Protector, Inc team, I would highly recommend at least reading the first book, Bodyguard Bear, since it introduces the large cast comprising the Protector, Inc employees and sets up the premise for the entire series. If you love the series half as much as I do, you'll be a fan for life! The story is exciting, thrilling, fast-paced, suspenseful, sweet, romantic and easy to follow. The narrative is exceptionally well written in the third person with alternating his and her points of view. My favorite! The dialogue is smart, entertaining, well executed and flows seamlessly. I'm also very impressed with the presentation of Chant's books. They are extremely well edited, the formatting is excellent and the covers are always beautiful. But it's the characters that take center stage in this series. They are captivating, intriguing, engaging and endearing. They grab your attention, capture your heart and hold you prisoner from beginning to end. The heroes are all handsome, charismatic males with kind hearts carefully concealed under their strong, gruff exteriors. The heroines are beautiful, intelligent women who possess remarkable strength, courage and kindness. No wilting violets among these women! I love it! Chant skillfully combines these elements to craft a delightfully entertaining paranormal tale filled to the brim with heart-pounding danger, spellbinding drama, heart-stopping adventure, spine-tingling suspense, heartbreaking angst and sweet seductive romance. What didn't I love about this book? Not a darn thing!
Handsome dragon shifter Lucas 'Blank' is in a bit of a pickle. For the last six months he's been employed by Protector, Inc., a private security firm owned by bear shifter Hal Brennan in Santa Martina. His five year reprieve is quickly coming to an end and he only has a few hours left before he must return to his own country to marry Princess Raluca. Huh? Oh, did I forget to mention that Lucas is not really Lucas Blank? Blank is not really his name and Lucas is not only a dragon shifter but also the Crown Prince and heir to the throne of Brandusa. Upon turning eighteen, he was given five years to find his true mate. Having failed to find his fated love, he must now return to honor his agreement to marry Princess Raluca of Viorel whom unfortunately, he doesn't love. Theirs was a prearranged marriage designed to strengthen trade and relations between the two countries. The clock is ticking, his time has run out, his heart is heavy yet Lucas is still reluctant to accept his fate. So, what's a dragon shifter prince to do? Why meet his true mate at his engagement party of course! But will he be able to protect and save her from his enemies before it's too late? Or will his courageous mate turn out to be his rescuer instead? Hmm...I wonder?
Beautiful Journey Jacobson from Lummox, North Dakota is also running out of time and money. She saved for years to escape her boring hometown and begin her adventure but with quite a few bumps along the way. She's spent the last year backpacking her way across Europe of which the last three months have been the best of her life. She has been employed by the Florescu family in Brandusa as an au pair for their seventeen year old daughter, Stefania. Unfortunately, Stefania would soon turn eighteen and the family no longer needs her services. Journey loves Brandusa and desperately wants to remain but sadly, has been unable to find another position. So, as in life, all good things must come to an end and she must return to her dull life at home. But at least she'll be able to attend a grand ball before she leaves. She is to accompany Stefania as her chaperone to the engagement celebration for the Crown Prince of Brandusa. Journey is fascinated by the legends and folklores of the country, especially the tale about the royal family. You see, all the people of Brandusa believe the Royal Family are actually dragons! Ridiculous, right? Hmm....I wonder? Well, Journey has always been blessed with a wonderful overactive imagination so she can go along with the fun for one night. When in Rome...... But the one thing the beautiful flame-haired Journey had never anticipated was for the engaged prince to not only notice her but pursue her, turning her wildest dreams into a thrilling and horrifying reality. Why in the world are people suddenly trying to kill the lovely Journey Jacobson? I wonder??? Oh my! Buckle up my lovelies! It's a wild ride - quite literally! Handsome crown prince dragon shifter who finally finds his true mate-check! Beautiful, courageous, red-haired beauty searching for happiness, adventure and a dream-check! Danger, suspense, deceit, betrayal, kidnapping, heinous enemies and political machinations-check! Heartbreaking angst, sweet romance and dreamy sex-you bet! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!
This book definitely deserves 4.5 stars! There’s a good amount of action, dragon shifters, and that “you’re my mate” insta-love! I liked this one even better than book 1. So if you weren’t sure after book one, definitely give this series a chance!
I like Journey and how she stepped in to save Lucas back. But I missed Protection Inc. and the characters we met there in the last book. A sweet, quick read.
Amazing story about a dragon Prince shifter and his mate
Lucas is a dragon Prince shifter, working for Protection Inc, and made a deal with his uncle to have five years of freedom. Now I have to go back to his castle and wed his betrothed. Since neither of them have found their mate they are going to join a arranged marriage.
So they have a ball. One of the guests at the ball is a woman named Journey. Lucas quickly realizes that she is his mate, but she leaves the ball. Will he find her and convince her she is his mate?
The characters are relatable, unique, and very have definite personalities. The plot reads like Cinderella but with a dramatic twist.
I love this story because of the dramatic twist and woman saving the day. I highly recommend this book.
Lucas is the Protection Inc. resident dragon shifter. He's rich, and somewhat aloof as he keeps himself always a bit apart fro the rest of his team. He's also a prince in his homeland, and forced to comply with an arranged political marriage because he has not found his mate.
Journey is a free spirit who is a nanny in his homeland. She accompanies her young charge to a ball to celebrate the prince's return and upcoming engagement.
Eyes meet across a crowded room and a Cinderella story begins to unfold between Lucas and Journey. There is even a lost shoe at the ball, but the addition of assassins, political machinations, poison, torture and sacrifice make it juicer than a Disney plot.
Having read all these books in this series, I will admit this one was the weakest for me.
2 1/2 stars. I was disenchanted by this story, it felt forced and not half as good as book one. The ending saved it from being rated lower. I am going to read the next one hopefully it will be better.

Notes:
🔸Too fast (And because of this I give the 2 ⭐)
My only issue with this story is how everything is rushed, especially the romance part.
This is a short story but that does not mean the timeframe for everything needs to be on a fast track.
For example: The MCs meet and they get together the same day. And the next day they are already talking as if they know each other so well, saying something like "I know he would never do something like that" and "that is the kind of person he is". Come on!!! They barely know each other!
One thing is feeling an instant connection, which is fine, the other is acting on it, which goes against every person's instinct to be vulnerable like that.
🔸Found family
Very short interactions but the Protection, Inc. group does have the found family feel to it.
Their interactions are cute.
🔸Plot: not bad but too fast
It lacks development.
Because the story is a short one there is not much to work with but I believe if the author had chosen to give the idea that some time had passed between the scenes in the story, the build up would have been better, even if word wise there would not be much difference nor more scenes.

As always my complete respect for the author and their work. No hate nor hurt intended with this review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This one is about Lucas, one of the members of Protection Inc., but it doesn't have much to do with it, since he left the group very early in the story.
This book was more like a fairy tale at the beginning, but I liked the twist at the end. Something that I noticed in the first book and that repeats in this one, and I appreciate it, is that the shifters are all protective with their mates, but the women prove that they are as capable of saving the shifters as they are of protecting them.
Lucas is a dragon Prince who had been trying to find his mate in hopes that he wouldn't have to honor the arranged marriage to a Princess from another country. He didn't find his mate in America; so he had to go home for his engagement. While at his engagement ball & as he was addressing the guests at the ball he happened to look around & find his mate.
Journey Jacobson had been working as an Au Pair for a couple for about 3 months & would shortly be leaving the country of Brandusa to go back to America as her charge would be turning 18 soon. But, the night before her charge turns 18 she goes to the Prince's engagement ball with her charge & while there not only meets Prince Lucas but dances with him too.
That is the beginning of their story; this book has lots of dragon in it some are good & some are bad. The bad ones go after not only Journey but Lucas too; some sex scenes, some 1st aid &/or healing scenes & a Princess who denounces her throne. This book was very good.
I thought I had read all of Zoe Chang's books when I finished reading about her firefighters and Got Shots. Those were two really awesome series. There was a lot of action but it was tied in with plenty of romance and when you add in the paranormal bent you get the best of the best. I'm really happy to have found this author.
But I've now discovered that Zoe Chant is a prolific author and has plenty of books left for me I read. I just finished "Defender Dragon" from the (Protectors,Inc.) Series. This is more of Ms. Chang's awesome story telling with lots of action and romance.
If you like dragons and seeing their softer side when they meet their mates this one is for you. You'll read about a dragon Prince being forced into an arranged marriage until he meets his mate at his engagement party. Someone doesn't want them together and will do anything to force him to stick to the arrangement. Read the action in this book of love and intrigue. I'm sure it will have you curled up for hours, unable to put it down.
A prince who can shift into a dragon gets called back to his home country when his time for looking for a mate has expired. Lucas has had years to find a mate and hasn't resonated with anyone, so when his country hopes to match him for political and trade gains he resigns himself to a loveless marriage. Enter Journey. A young American who just so happens to be at the engagement ball--with one look at her, Lucas knows. Mostly based off of feelings of lust the story has action as Journey has to escape someone who wants her removed from the situation and wants Lucas to marry elsewhere solidifying power and political alliances. Lucas must rescue her and then wait to be rescued right back. The character of the Lucas and Journey weren't dived into very much, more of they are perfect for each other and a little back story. The plot is mostly them trying to be together--which can make for a fun read. I do love a good shifter story.
This is the second book in the Protection,Inc. series. This is a story of greed, kidnapping, imprisonment and friendship. In this story we find Prince Lucas having to honor a five year plan that if he or the princess of another country do not find their true mate they must marry. He has left Protection,Inc. in order to do so. None of the parts involved are pleased that five years have come to pass. Lucas and Raluca are at their ball when he sees his mate setting off a series of events no one expects. Lucas saves Journey when she is attacked. Journey is a nanny working in his country, although she is American. Will Lucas be able to save his true love? Who is trying to force the marriage between Lucas and Raluca?
Kindle unlimited purchase By Zoe Chant It's the last hour of his life as he knows it. He was told at age 18 he was to marry a woman he did not love. When he went to find his mate he had 5 years because he has not found her he had to go back and marry the woman. Nether wanted this marriage, but neither found their mate. So they had not choice. The night of the ring party how does he find? And it sets off a series of events that nether had expected. I enjoyed the book. I had the pleasure of reading book one when it first came out. Don't know why I didn't keep track of the series as they were published but now I'm NOT stopping until I have read them all.
Don't forget don't mess with dragons for you are crunchy and taste great with ketchup!
Did the same person who wrote the first book write this one? Cuz I have to tell ya...I had to struggle to keep reading it. I won't say it was bad but...it wasn't that great either. I really liked the first book. This one almost made me stop reading the series but I was very excited to see what she did with Catalina and Shane. I'm reading Panther now and that makes me wonder even harder...again...is it the same author. Sorry. Zoe, you almost lost me with Dragon of all things. Sigh. I love dragons but that story was just UGH!!! Good news is I'm really enjoying Panther right now, so I chock this up to writers block...
Imagine an Anthony Horowitz book, merged with cressida Cowell's HTTYD. That's how this book read. It has the sophistication of a decently written kids book. But not the maturity of supposed adults, in an new adult book.
For that reason it was kind of a hard book to get into, and the MCs were immature in speech and action. They had no chemistry, and it just felt awkward. Especially any scenes they have together where they're professing their love, or he's defending her. If they were 13-15 in age, this book would have been perfectly written for their age.
So 2 stars, wouldn't reccomend (read and form your own opinions), and wouldn't read another book by this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It always thrills my heart to read about potential mates. Especially since they both had been though such trauma. Although a prince and seeking his mate, Lucas was not enjoying his life...he was just going through the motions. After so long trying period, he was just going through the motions of finding his true mate. He would soon find out what a traitor his mentor turned out to be...he only wanted to use Lucas to further his own agenda and greed. It was so special that through more trial and error, these two would find true love.
I love when an author grabs your attention and sucks you right into the book. The story is about a sexy dragon shifter (Lucas), who needs to find his mate before he's forced to fly home and marry a princess he doesn't love. Talk about arranged marriages. This book has it all, including the not so nice relatives that will do what needs to be done to see that he doesn't find his true mate. Definitely recommend the book, the series and most definitely the author. I loved it and can't wait to read the next book in this series.
It was a ok read. Well I am sure I was a fantastic read but I really not into royal type of stories. I understand that things have to move fast but it really felt rushed to me. Find mate, breaking engagement, save mate, tell mate about been a dragon, she believes it, and have sex with mate, all this in the same night!!!!! It is a bit much for me to even pretend I liked the book. So different from the previous one. I am disappointed but not enough to stop me from wanting to read the next book on this series!
I thought that this was an another great story in the Protection Inc. series!
If you want an easy and enjoyable read involving fantasy shifters, then this is going to be a book for you! It was full of action and romance and there was plenty to keep me entertained and hooked and I thought that it had a great plot.
I thought that the attention to detail was great and the characters were excellent - the book was a really quick and enjoyable read.
It is 4 stars from me for this one - highly recommended!
Like an adult fairytale, this story is about a dragon shifting prince, who falls for a penniless woman. Journey is backpacking her way around the world when she meets Prince Lucas. Lucas recognizes his fated mate at first sight… and that is where all the troubles begin.
Another enjoyable, yet quick read in the Protection Inc. series. It has lots of action, a little romance, and manages to pack quite a bit into a fairly short read. It’s all fun though, and an entertaining few hours for paranormal romance fans.
Another great book from Zoe Chant . loved it and the dragon Lucus and journey's story . He was a bodyguard who was a prince that had to go back home to marry due to not finding his mate but things changed during a ball when he met Journey and she was his mate but politics got in the way and danger lurked for them both . The story had them winning in the end and returning back to the US . can't wait to read the next one
This was a book that I felt was well written. As the storyline line begins and a misunderstanding takes place, I thought nooooo! Please don't take this story down a long and winding chapter eating path based on a misunderstanding that could be easily fixed had the characters just talked. But this talented author once again provided what I have come to think of as her story signature that keeps me one clicking! Likeable characters, limited strife and quick resolution!
Lucas is a little surly. Understandable when we learn he is being coerced into marrying someone he does not love. Lucas is a prince of a kingdom, and a dragon. Talked into an arranged marriage at the young age of 18, he has only one honorable out. Find his true mate. This story reminded me of an evil version of Cinderella. Only no ugly step-sisters, just greedy people who don't care who they hurt. Great story.
