"Clipper Ship Days" was an informative book for me, since I knew very little about the shipping explosion in the 1800s. This book described the various ships, their routes, some stories that accompany different ships, and then the decline of clipper ships due to the development of the Panama railroad. Ships went from slow, to fast, and back to slow and able to carry more freight.
As a child this is not one of the Landmark books I would have chosen to read. I was more into Daniel Boone and Kit Carson stories. But as an adult currently trying to read the entire series I read this story of American clipper ships. Since I didn’t even know what a clipper ship actually was I learned several facts about American naval history. I now know that clipper ships were sailing ships built when profits were made by how fast delivery was made rather than how much cargo each ship carried.
This is a great tale of American ingenuity and invention. I was surprised when I first saw it, because I wondered how they could stretch such a topic into a book's length of interesting material, but it was interesting on the whole.
