Excerpt from Heroines of Service: Mary Lyon, Alice Freeman Palmer, Clara Barton, Frances Willard, Julia Ward Howe, Anna Shaw, Mary Antin, Alice Anna Fletcher, Mary Slessor of Calabar, Madame Curie Jane Addams From time immemorial women have been content to be as those who serve. Non ministrari sed ministrare - not to be ministered unto but to minister - is not alone the motto of those who stand under the Wellesley banner, but of true women everywhere. For centuries a woman's own home had not only first claim, but full claim, on her fostering care. Her interests and sympathies - her mother love - belonged only to those of her own household. In the days when much of the labor of providing food and clothing was carried on under each roof-tree, her service was necessarily circumscribed by the home walls. I highly recommend this book and I see that it is available on Kindle and Nook but I happened to purchase and read a copy straight out of 1917! These biographical vignettes are full of great information and inspiration. I learned about several women who I had never even heard of before but were obviously more popular back when this book was published. I am glad to have met all these women some for the first time and others I have met many times before.
Several of these biographies are fantastic. Prominent figures, like Marie Curie, were already well known to me, others were unfamiliar. The author does exhibit paternalist and old-fashioned religious stances at times, but the information is worth ignoring that. Good narrators.
When I picked this book, I expected a mildly engaging book. Good background for brainless manual labour of that specific day. It proved to be something else. Short but touching stories that motivate and give perspective. Book is old but written the way that does not make you struggle with this fact. Quite opposite. It makes you appreciate the stories it's about even more. It's just a good book.
