3 - "No chihuahua has ever been a match for a big dog." Stars.

This is the first novella in the series that has actually felt a bit fillery to me. Nothing really moved along in it, and bearing in mind you have a cast of dozens, all of which are harboring at least one dirty little secret, I was expecting a little more.

"You're only making this worse."

Don't get me wrong I wasn't bored, but the development of several of the pivotal plots that have featured in the previous installments is virtually nil, and apart from the arrival of Marcus Alvarez into the mix, and a lot of pursed lips from the towns higher echelons in relation to his potential involvement with Storm's golden girl Brittany Rush, nothing else really happened.

"I've Never found anything but lies at the bottom of a glass of alcohol."

The final three episodes in this Soap-Novella have certainly got some tying up to do.

Quick & Dirty: More drama, more romance and a couple that is willing to fight for each other, including declaring war on a certain prestigious family.

Opening Sentence: Funny thing, coming home to a small town after six years.

The Review:

Calm Before the Storm is the fifth episode in the Rising Storm series. This soap opera/drama series still has me hooked on the residents of the little town of Storm. Once again this series isn’t your typical romance series. It’s more of a story of the relationships developing or being destroyed and the people who are trying to fight for those relationships.

This installment mainly focuses on Marcus Alvarez who has recently returned to town after his father’s disappearance to help his mother get by with finances. He doesn’t expect to stick around long, he definitely wants to be gone if his dad shows back up in town. After Marcus meets back up with Brittany Rush and feels the attraction there, he is contemplating if he really wants to leave Storm.

Calm Before the Storm really seems to focus more on the Alvarez family and all the drama that is focuses on them. Some huge secrets are revealed. Marcus is in no way like his father, the abusive bastard, but his story does relate how much a child will go to not be like their parent. Marcus ran away instead of giving in to the anger.

As to the writing, I haven’t been able to tell that each installment has been written by someone else. I love how each author gets the flesh out a character or two but it is the little things that help with the rest of the characters. The only character that I still can’t stand is Dakota, I’m hoping that will change as the series goes on.

Overall, I’m enjoying the series so far. I really want the development to progress a little more only because I’m nosy and want to know what is going to happen when everything explodes. I’m just worried that Brittany may end up in a similar situation like Joanna Alvarez, especially since Marcus has declared war on the Rushes. I’m going to end this review here so I can read the next installment in this series.

Notable Scene:

He looked away from Brit in shame. “Do you get it now?” he asked. “When I stay, I fight. Bad things happen. It’s better for everyone when I walk away.”

“No,” she said softly, and he had to give her credit for screaming and running off in horror. “It’s not better for everyone. Don’t you dare walk away from me. Sometimes it’s okay to fight. Fight for me, for the possibility of us.”

Jesus. Was she for real? He turned back to her, wondering if she’d heard a word he’d said. “Is that really what you want? Because your family isn’t going to let this fly without a battle, and I’ll give it to them. Once I engage, I don’t back down.”

She inhaled sharply, and he damn never looked away again, afraid to see the revulsion in her expression. Instead, he saw determination. Admiration. And heat that scorched his skin.

“I want that.” She poked him in the chest, emphasizing her fierce words. “I want what you’ve got to offer. Everything you’ve got to offer.”

In the 5th installment of the Rising Storm serial, Calm Before the Storm was honestly my least favorite. This book was not bad but I felt a little bored and unsatisfied with the storyline. I felt that there wasn't anything scandalous, sexy or anything juicy added to the mix. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book but I wished there was just a little spice to get me all excited with the arrival of Marcus Alavarez. I just wished the relationship of Brittany and Marcus was a little more juicier and sexier because Marcus's character kind of bored me. And I think the only Alavarez who really made it interesting was Dakota. And I look forward to the craziness Dakota will stir up once someone stands in her way.

Marcus Alvarez finally came back home after running away years ago. In his words, we find out why he left and got more confirmation about his father Hector’s mean and cruel behavior towards his wife and Marcus, but never for this precious daughter Dakota. There is more heat simmering between Marcus and Brittany Rush, the senator’s daughter. I like the whole wrong side of the tracks and rich girl theme, but I know the Rush family will do something to crush the Alvarez family. I like Marcus and it is clear that he is a good person. I hope he can save his little sister Dakota because she is entangled in a mess.

I am more excited by the fact that Ginny’s story is to unravel and throw a lot of people into a tailspin. She has a budding relationship with veteran Logan, but Jacob’s family will not appreciate being lied to.

This series is still very enjoyable and I plan to continue shortly.

Storm, Texas, love it or hate it, this small town has more dark secrets than the Bat Cave. Marcus Alvarez has come back to the town he couldn’t leave fast enough. His father is missing, his mother and sisters are in limbo and he is back to do what he should have done when he fled the wrath of his drunken father; watch over them. Fly in, zoom out, that was his plan, but forbidden fruit, in the name of Brittany Rush may have him rethinking his plans to leave.

Larissa Ione’s contribution to the trial and tribulations of Storm, Calm Before the Storm still covers several townsfolk, their dirty little secrets and their holier than thou attitudes, their clandestine affairs, but the feel has changed. Gone is the pure soap opera feel, where the scenes and characters are on a revolving stage, fading to black just as their story reaches DefCon 4. Ms. Ione has brought in a little more “personal” feeling in each character’s thoughts and actions. The two-faced, the gullible, the innocent and the in love, they are all here, but this time with a little less high drama.

I received an ARC edition from Larisssa Ione in exchange for my honest review.

So, this is going to become the next trend? Soap opera like books/series?

Not sure how I feel about that, I'm not a fan of drama, intrigue, multiple POVs or soap operas in general. :( But hey, it's Larissa, and she never disappoints, so we shall see...

I am completely, 100% addicted to this series! Each week, I find myself waiting in anticipation for the next episode to show up on my kindle. And each week, I find myself deeper and deeper into the story. Calm Before The Storm does not disappoint.

Calm Before The Storm picks up right where the last book left off. Marcus has finally returned home and is attempting to focus on the important things vs the past that he left behind. Enter Brittany and now Marcus might just have a reason to stay….Brittany has always had a thing for Marcus. But, now seeing him after all this time, her attraction to him has only intensified. However obligations to her family may stop anything from ever coming into play with Marcus and Brittany.

Calm Before The Storm is the perfect title to this episode. With so many twists and turns, there is never a dull moment. Everything seems to building now. There are only so many lies and secrets that can be told before they start leaking out. Hold on to your hats, ladies, and be prepared for another crazy ride. I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t wait to see where the next episode will take us!

This novella is another great addition to the dramatic Rising Storm series. In this story, Larissa Ione gives the reader a glimpse of what is going on in the lives of all the main characters. There were only a few characters like Lacey and Marisol for whom we don't see their point of views this time, but we still see them from the point of view of other characters.

So far in this series there are romances going on between Logan and Ginny, Mallory and Luis, Brittany and Marcus, Marisol and Logan's brother (sorry I can't think of his name), and potentially Dillon and Joanna. I wouldn't really call it a romance, but there's also an affair going on between Senator Rush and Dakota. There's a lot going on, so it's practically impossible to get bored, especially since there is always the threat of some other person mucking it up.

I liked how Larissa Ione gave some hints of what will happen in the future. I really have to read the next episode now to see if Hector Alvarez comes home.

I was really looking forward to this episode, as I've enjoyed Larissa Ione in the past. Once again, I'm so pleasantly surprised at the transition between the writers each book.

I enjoyed Calm Before The Storm so much because it really focused on three different characters and it just seemed a bit more manageable in the way of story line. At the end of episode 4, we were introduced to Marcus, as he is just rolling back into town. I really like Marcus and again, there is growing romance between characters. His and Britney's relationship will be an interesting one to watch. I really could just read a whole story on them and Ginny and Logan.

My mind is just boiling over. There is so much going on behind the smiles and "small town friendly" atmosphere. Nothing is as it appears, and I'm starting to wonder if the town of Storm, TX, will survive once the web of secrets and lies starts to unravel. The tension builds more and more, as we get farther into the story line.

When are people in this town going to learn to not share their secrets? When are they going to learn that even their most trusted friends or sisters or brothers, won't keep the secret, can't keep the secret, in a town that thrives on gossip and lies? At this point, all someone has to do is breathe wrong, and everything will start to come out.

I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see what will happen next, who will start the dominoes falling, and who will survive.

This episode features the Alvarez family, focusing on the return of Marcus. His return is interesting since his love interest is Brittany Rush, and with them coming from different sides of the tracks, it makes the story that much more riveting. The dynamic in the Alvarez family is also something that is to be watched, with Joanna coming into her own, Dakota acting as the entitled princess she wishes she is and Mallory trying to get her own relationship with her boyfriend in order. A lot is happening, leading up to the big explosion that is definitely building as the series continues. With Paul Boehmer narrating this gem, it is a book that keeps you going for the next one.

This is the fifth book in the Rising Storm series. These books read like a soap-opera. The books are more like chapters and you put them all together to make one book.

We are focusing on the younger crowd of Storm TX in this book. We just found out the senator's son has a secret. The kids are trying to figure out how to forgive and forget the transgressions against them. There is a ton of drama.

I have been trying to figure out if I am a fan of these books or not. I am leaning towards not and Ill tell ya why. There are so many characters in this series they are hard to keep straight. I find it confusing and frustrating. If you are looking for a quick read and a ton of childish drama this book is for you. If not I suggest skipping it for the next book on your kindle. Happy Reading

So THIS "book" cuts off right in the middle. Not even on a cliffhanger jut like end of chapter and that's it, roll credits... Not sure what this is all about, but I am decidedly UNISPIRED to continue with this "series".

It is now time for my favorite show... errr... book. Rising Storm. We are already up to Episode #5, The Calm Before The Storm by Larissa Ione.

The title this week seems to hint at what is to come. That right now we are headed into a nice little calm with things happening right as they should before everything is going to blow up in our faces. UH OH! (Is it horrible that I can't wait to watch it unfold?) But for now... let's see what unfolded this week in Storm! This week we focus on the return of Marcus Alvarez. He had skipped town years ago after his dad's drinking became too much for him to deal with. But his leaving town left his mom and sisters alone with the drunken Hector Alvarez. Now that Hector has gone MIA, Marcus has returned to make sure that the rest of his family is OK. He never expected that he would be stepping foot back in Storm. But as soon as he does he sees Brittany Rush. Brittany has long harbored a crush on the oh so sexy and now mysterious Marcus. Will the beautiful Brittany be enough to lure Marcus back to Storm for good?

This edition was definitely much calmer. I loved getting to know the elusive Marcus. We had only really heard his name before, but now we really got to see into his character. How he interacted with his family, with his friends, and how he is falling hard and fast for Brittany. We also get to see his lingering misgivings and uneasiness about being back in Storm. His mixed feelings with his mother - though he loves her - that stretch back to why he took off in the first place. This paints a much deeper version of him than we have gotten to seen of many other characters and I really appreciated it. But you get the sense that the calm is not here to stay! Marcus really wants to work everything out and make everything right with his family and friends and Brittany, but we all know that life is never that simple. Marcus and Brittany are from different sides of the track - and as she is the Senator's daughter you know her family is going to be out to destroy this! And just think of the juicy fun that will be to watch. Because THAT will surely tear the family apart! Brittany is too sweet and loyal to not be pulled by this.. but she also has a backbone and is truly taken with Marcus. Which boils down to delicious tantalizing DRAMA in books to come! And just think about what will happen when big, bad, tough Marcus finds out that the Senator is using his sister's Daddy issues in order to f**k her and then is already thinking about the next young thing he can play with? (I know, I know the storm that is alluded to here has gotten me WAY TOO EXCITED!!)

I definitely recommend that you tune into this series. Just start from the beginning ;) They are fun, quick reads that will grab, you and suck you in!

The last book's cliffhanger ending was Marcus Alvarez returning to town after several years away and this book picked up right where that one left off.

We learn a lot about Marcus in this book, specifically what happened in the past that caused him to leave town. Unsurprisingly, it had to do with his father beating his mother and beating him, too. The more I hear about Hector, the more I am glad that Dillon ran him out of town. Yet, knowing this is a soap opera, I have an inkling that he'll be back before the end of this season.

We also have a number of secrets that keep getting revealed to different people, and I look forward to them coming out and changing everyone's lives forever. Specifically, Dillon actually told Marcus that he forced Hector out of town. I didn't think he'd spill that secret so soon. Granted, it was only to a couple people, but still.

We also learned even more about what colossal assholes Sebastian and Marylee are. They are so full of themselves that I really hope they get taken down a few hundred notches. And ideally, it would happen at the Founder's Day celebration. (My years of watching soaps has informed this idea. Nearly every time there is a big town gathering, ALL of the secrets get spilled.)

The other thing of note in this book is that one of my very favorite phrases was used to describe Sebastian. "Bag of dicks." It is so apt for him. and I just love the phrase, because it is so evocative.

My only complaint about this book and the rest in the series is that it isn't longer. I want to know more about all these people, which is just what I want from any soap-like thing I read or watch. I can't wait to discover more.

After 6 years, Marcus Alvarez in back in Storm, Texas. Since his father left home unexpectedly, Marcus has been worried about his mother and sisters. During that time, Marcus had been working in a Montana ranch where his boss, Ian Briggs helped him to manage his anger issues. Marcus plans to Montana soon, but when he sees Brittany Rush again, he begins to rethink his plans. Nobody really knows why Marcus had left. Meanwhile, Luis wants to fix things with Mallory Rush, and blurts out what he heard Payton and Francine discuss about Jacob Salt.

Marylee Rush and her son, the Senator, do not want to see Marcus and Brittany involved, and will stop at nothing to nip that romance in the bud. However, when someone finally stands up to the Senator, is it in vain?

Dillon Murphy tells Marcus what happened with Hector Alvarez, and we get to know the horrible reason why Hector has always been so much nicer to Dakota.

The title CALM BEFORE THE STORM is exactly what is happening in Episode 5 of the Rising Storm series; secrets are revealed but the consequences won’t be felt until later; who will tell what to whom? The Senator and his mother are definitely up to no good, but how far will they go?

CALM BEFORE THE STORM is so well written, so fluid, it was over before I knew it; I was completely immersed in the story; it is so good! And the flirting between Brittany and Marcus is one of the hottest scenes I have ever read. A heck of a storm is brewing!

I've been curious about Marcus for a while now. He had left the town of Storm and left behind his mom and sisters who were getting a pretty raw deal from his father. It struck me as strange that he wouldn't be the man of the house and protect his mom then. And then there were the hints that Brittany liked him. Being from opposite sides of the track was definitely a draw for me.

So Marcus is back in this installment and ready to face some of his demons. Now that his dad is gone, and someone else had to step in to make that happen, he thinks he can just pick up the pieces of his family and move back on with his life. It was nice to see him dealing with a bit more remorse than that, but I can't say he became my favorite person in town.

His relationship with Brittany to me is a mix of wanting her and wanting to stick it to the big man, so I wasn't as happy about that.

In the end, there are some new developments in this installment but I couldn't quite connect as much as I wanted, id didn't move the storyline along enough and this is not one that left me wanting the next one desperately.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review over on my blog (Pretty Little Book Blog)

This book picks up exactly where Episode 4 left off! Marcus has just made one hell of an entrance coming back to town and the Sparks between him and Brittany start to fly the minute he appears outside Murphy's Pub.

Then the push and pull begins! He thinks (after receiving some snide comments from her family that he's not good enough to be with her) and she's fighting just as hard to keep him and convince him that they could be great together. Marcus is pretty mixed up and returning home has been a pretty big mind trip.

Almost all of the other storylines get a turn during this story, Luis and Mal, Dakota and Sebastian, Ginny and Logan. And we begin to see the final showdown will be at the Founder's Day celebration (because I mean if you are about to let loose a lot of secrets where better than a massive town gathering?) this episode like episode 3 I believe ends rather abruptly, where there is even almost 5 percent of the book left you think that it's going to get wrapped up a little more but nope it's just extra material *facepalm* so now its waiting for next week! Even though I still would have liked a little more resolution at the end I still thought it was a pretty good episode! I like Marcus and Brittany together and I like that she fires back on him, like before I sort of thought she wouldn't ever stand up to her family but boom! I applause her for becoming my second favorite female character in this series!

What I love about the Rising Storm series is how each and every book builds upon the other, but can also be read as a standalone because each book focuses on a certain set of characters. This one is about Marcus and Brittany.

Marcus Alvarez ran away from home years ago after almost killing his father for beating up on his mother. Finding his place on a ranch miles away, Marcus has found his place. After receiving the phone call from his mother letting her know that his father had run out on them and his sisters and her were struggling, he comes back to Storm to try and help. What he did not expect was the appearance of Brittany Rush and the feelings that he had for her years ago to come rushing back stronger than ever.

Brittany Rush has been in love with Marcus Alvarez since High School. Never thinking that he would ever return home, she is shocked to find him at Murphy's pub. Now that he is back in town, she is willing to show him in anyway possible that she has feeling for him and that no matter what tries to stand in there way, they can make it though together.

I loved the connection between Brittany and Marcus. They both come from different sides of the tracks, but neither have ever looked down on anyone else because of it. Marcus always felt like he was never good enough, but Brittany helps him see that he is perfect for her just the way that he is.

I cannot wait for more sex, lies, scandals and secrets from Storm, Texas.

Someone is back in Storm after a long period away. He was the town bad boy when he left in a hurry and certainly makes a big entrance on his return. With a reputation like that, is isn't difficult to understand that he's going to draw attention...both bad and good. Marcus Alvarez is back and Brittany Rush has set her sights on him! He may be from the wrong side of the town, her family disapprove but that isn't enough to stop the senator's daughter from going after the ripped ranch hand.

Looks and attitude can be deceiving and it only takes a short while before Marcus' missing years are filled in, as we learn the depth of his issues and the causes...unsurprisingly, it isn't long before the illusive Hector Alvarez's name crops up, and suspicions to be aroused! Information is exchanged and filed away as motivation and understandings are exchanged.

Truths are being uncovered, gossip is rife with a healthy dose of interference thrown into the mix. Preparations for the Founders Day are taking up lots of time, causing one resident to re-evaluate an arrangement that has run its course in the name of damage limitation. As with the previous episodes, Larissa Ione has fed us more enticing morsels of life of the residents in Storm, Texas. The writing is first class as the tension is really beginning to mount. I can't wait for the next instalment: Take The Storm by Rebecca Zanetti.

I’m so unashamedly hooked on this series; I will internally combust if someone doesn’t get caught out soon!! And while I’ve never been someone to watch daytime soap operas, this series is definitely my addiction.

A little about CALM BEFORE THE STORM:

It’s a mother’s duty to love and protect her child, but when she can’t protect herself, what chance is there for her young?

Marcus Alvarez left Storm with hurt and anger in his heart and guilt that no 18 year old should harbour weighing down his soul. Now that he’s returned, the anger still simmers beneath the surface, but Marcus has learned to temper his responses and tries to focus on providing strength and support to the family his abusive father left behind.

Brittany Rush has coveted Marcus since High School, but the handsome boy is now all sexy, rugged man, and Brittany finds her attraction is far more intense than a simple childhood crush. But Brittany’s lineage is town royalty and her family don’t take kindly to her slumming it with a half Hispanic from the wrong side of the racks.

People with their own agendas are hell bent on extinguishing young love, before it even has a chance to bloom, while they themselves are wallowing in deception and lies that could destroy those they claim to love and rock the very foundation of this blossoming tourist mecca.

This is Book 5 of an ongoing series. I recommend that these be read in order.

We get treated to another episode with Calm Before the Storm in this ongoing drama. This time it's Marcus Alvarez who returns to town, running into Brittany Rush, and having the attraction between them ignite, despite her family's stern warnings to let it go. You sure see that this one may turn ugly soon because neither plans on heeding their warnings. Brittany is the daughter of Sen. Sebastian Rush, who has slept around with many women, including Marcus' little sister, Dakota. Dakota is a loose cannon, waiting to blow up. She's not liking how her relationship with Sebastian is getting stagnant either. There's definitely a dangerous air about Storm, Texas, ready to be unleashed.

We also find out more information about Ginny's baby, Dillon's role in Hector leaving is revealed to Marcus, as well as as update on Luis and Mallory's relationship. There's a lot going on, and with all the story lines that are continuing and new ones starting, it's difficult to care about any one of them too long as they all get shuffled around. This has nothing to do with the author, as I think she did a great job of what she was to write about, I would just like for one or more of the story lines to wrap up so that I could actually start focusing in on a few of them.

Larissa Ione has done a great job with episode 5 Calm Before the Storm in the Rising Storm series.
Marcus left Storm without saying goodbye to anyone. No one knows why he left the way he did. He winds up in Montana living and working on a ranch for his new mentor Ian. The last thing Marcus thought he would ever do was return to Storm. When his abusive father Hector disappears and leaves his mother and sisters to fiend for themselves Marcus comes home to help his mom figure out what to do.
Brittany has lived a life of luxury. She comes from one of the wealthiest families in Storm. Her father is a senator after all. Brittany's best friend Ginny, who may be pregnant with the senators child but everyone thinks is Jacob's just started dating Logan Marcus' best friend. Brittany has always thought Marcus was cute and even more so now that they are both grown. Ginny encourages her to go after Marcus if she wants him.
Marcus and Brittany have a lot to overcome if they are going to be together. Her family's plans for her future, his family's status in town, and the fact he now lives in Montana are just a few of the obstacles they'll have to face. Of course then there's the family secrets. It will be interesting to see how their relationship unfolds in the upcoming episodes.

Who knew that even in tiny Storm, Texas there could be such animosity between those that have and those that don't! There's some real drama brewing in this week's Episode. We learn more about Marcus Alvarez and his return home; some residents are very happy he's returned and then there are those that are less than thrilled with him and they make it perfectly clear how they feel about Marcus and his plans:

"The worst part of it was that the guy probably didn't even realize he was so hateful. He'd likely go to his grave denying that he was an elitist snob who looked down on those who didn't have his money, his breeding, his education, his social standing, his color of skin."

To go along with this drama, secrets are starting to be revealed and you just know they won't be secrets much longer because in the wrong ears, they will destroy more than just the person the secret is about!

I love how old friendships are being rekindled, and new relationships are forming against the wishes of some residents and then there's the relationships that no one is to know about, but may come to the forefront before long. I'm looking forward to next week's Episode to see what happens next!

After a violent confrontation with his father, in which his mother sided with his father, Marcus left Storm. Now that his father's been run out of town, and it seems like his mother and sisters are falling apart, he returns. Upon his return, he runs into Brittany Rush, the Senator's daughter.

Brittany's family doesn't approve of a relationship with Marcus; his family considers him beneath them, even though the Senator is having an affair with one of his sisters. Brittany, for her part, doesn't care what they think. She wants to be with Marcus and that's that.

Marcus doesn't care for the Senator's threats, either. If Brittany wants to be with him, he's going to be with her no matter what they say to him. However, what Brittany's grandmother does at the end of the book may affect their relationship.

In this book we get a hint of where the Senator's relationship with Dakota is heading, and we also get a more in-depth background on Alvarez's family situation, which was hinted at in previous books. It's a little hard to believe that Dakota still can't recognize what a terrible man her father was.

I enjoyed this part of the series, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

3.5 Stars - This book focuses mainly on Brittany and Marcus however we get glimpses and snippets of the other characters we've come to love.

What I loved:
• The flirting and chemistry between Brittany and Marcus.
•The "old friend" bond between Marcus and Logan, their scenes were great!
•The evil that is Senator Rush and his Mother... wonderfully written.

What I liked less:
• Marcus is undecided about his immediate future at this point in the story, which is fine.. but sometimes came across more wishy-washy than I would expect from his character.
• Simple misunderstandings... I really dislike when these go on for far too long.... now this one could play out totally differently in the next book, than I am picturing. But I have a strong feeling it won't and sadly because of that, has left a sour taste in my mouth at the end of this episode and has lost .5 of a star from me.

I had not read this author before and while her writing was good it did take me some time to adjust to it... and honestly I can't put my finger on why... that said, I am glad I have book 6 on my kindle ready to go.. I cant wait to see what's going to happen!
