Earth Girl #0.5

Earth and Fire

Rate this book
Into the fire! The first Earth Girl prequel novella featuring Jarra.

2788. Only the handicapped live on Earth. While everyone else uses interstellar portals to travel between hundreds of colony worlds, 17-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, abandoned by her parents to be raised a ward of Hospital Earth, she lives a regimented life in one of their impersonal residences.

Tortured by the knowledge the stars are forever out of her reach, Jarra dreams of learning to fly a plane so she can at least make the skies of Earth her own. She gets her chance to become a qualified pilot, but learning to fly turns out to be far more difficult and dangerous than she imagined, sending her into a literal trial by fire.

EARTH AND FIRE is a prequel novella, set in the distant future of the Earth Girl trilogy (Earth Girl, Earth Star, and Earth Flight).

Note that the first two chapters of EARTH AND FIRE have appeared as the title story in the EARTH 2788 short story collection. The other fifteen chapters are entirely new.

Set a year before the beginning of Earth Girl (Earth Girl, #1) by Janet Edwards , this prequel novella features the story of Jarra getting her pilot's license. Enjoyable addition to the trilogy.

After 1st Reading: A really great novella from an excellent author. This is a prequel to one of my favorite series and reading about Jarra, Issette and Keon felt like meeting up with old friends. I'm heading straight on to the next prequel Earth and Air.

After 3rd Reading: I returned to this one after being in Lockdown for over a month. I felt the need for a metaphorical old friend as the literal ones are all "social distancing". Janet Edwards is pretty much the most reliable author I know. If you pick up one of her books you are guaranteed to be swept up in a fascinating story, holding your breath as the characters face the odds, and when you close the book you'll have that rosy warm glow of a book with a satisfying ending. Once more I'm heading straight on to the next prequel Earth and Air.

Literally a few minutes before I started reading this book, I had completed a different book that could be considered more "high literature" and so it took me a while to adjust to the more simplistic (YA) writing style Edwards uses here. Once I did, though, I remembered how much fun I have with these Earth Girl stories. The pace through the first half of this novella felt rather plodding, but especially once we get to the fire sequences I was really enjoying the tale. I'm pleased that Edwards seems dedicated to continuing to develop this universe (even now that the trilogy is complete) because I genuinely like these characters and it's good to have some light/fun reading to turn to periodically.

Having read the "Earth Girl" trilogy, it is always a pleasure to revisit Jarra's earlier life.

Living in a society where portal technology has enabled swift and easy transit from planet to planet, Jarra is one of the "handicapped", a small proportion of people born with a faulty immune system which only allows them to survive on Earth - all other planets produce an immense allergic reaction in this unlucky few which causes death unless they are immediately returned to planet Earth where most of the off-planet parents abandon them. They have become an underclass, a butt of other-world jokes, a stigma, a source of shame, and although their only difference from the rest of humanity is a faulty immune system, they are regarded by many as sub-human.

Jarra cannot leave her planet, but she constantly struggles to reach her goals, and this time it is learning to fly.

EarthGirlNovella1

Jarra in 2788 Earth is planet bound, her immune system can’t tolerate space or other atmospheres. At nearly 18, Jarra has been raised by surrogates- people who like her, can’t leave Earth, and have been largely abandoned by their biological parents. But something in Jarra refuses to believe she is just an ape, a throwback to a primitive development that is hampered not just in immunity but intelligence as well. Jarra wants to fly old earth technology—airplanes.

Fascinating. The Earth Girl series is "amaz!"

Great characters, interesting perspectives on the future. Problems? I think I have read all the books and novellas in this series. Like an addict I just want more. Thanks to the author for writing them. I encourage everyone to read them, though realistically I know they won't appeal to everyone.

Oh man, I loved this^^
I've got myself an ereader yesterday and the first thing I did was getting Janet Edwards Novellas. This is the first I've read so far and it was so interesting^^
I've learned more about the Characters from the Earth Girl series - mainly Jarra, Isette, Keon and Cathan. But it gave me completally new view on the whole world, it was really interesting to learn under what circumstances Jarra learned to fly a plane.

Can't wait to read the next Novellas!
