William F. Powell is an internationally recognized artist recognized as one of America's foremost colorists. He has written and illustrated more than 30 instructional art books.
A few years ago I was taking a beginning drawing class. When it came time to learn about perspective, we watched a fascinating, if intimidating, documentary on some very beautiful, very complicated art created using perspective. Some of the pieces were drawn by hand, yet looked like something created today using a computer (everything featured in the documentary was made before electricity had been invented). Then my art teacher gave our assignment; draw an object using perspective. I was so overwhelmed and scared & terrible at math. I chickened out of the assignment and never finished. I had a great art teacher, but I wish I'd had this book back then. William F. Powell's "Perspective" spells it out simply and fully, and covers 1-point, 2-point, and 3-point perspective, using several simple examples, including examples to practice. Recommended for everyone wishing to draw realistically and accurately. *contains no math whatsoever*
This book provides clear, step-by-step instructions, supporting visuals & helpful tips for 1-, 2-, & 3-point perspective. Just wish I didn’t find doing the exercises so ... boring. Not the author’s fault at all, it just feels more like technical drawing than art when I’m using a ruler to draw lines off to an imaginary vanishing point. Still, a good refresher on this topic.
The book gives great guidelines to the shading and shapes perspective and planes so on and so forth it really is a good guideline for beginners like me and I look forward to trying all the teaches
I picked up this little gem one day at a local art store and after reading a bunch of other books on the topic of perspective drawing, I had to come back and change my rating to 5 stars. This book has all of the essential information to get you started and breaks things down in a very simple way that is easy to understand. It's also in a great little pocket sized format with very clear drawings which makes it a perfect little quick reference book.
I finished reading it, but I have yet to compete all the exercises in it. I love the format, with lots of illustrations and simple step-by-step explanations. Definitely learned a lot. Now I just have to discipline myself enough to actually apply what I've learned!
A good book on basic perspective. This is not a deep theory book, the text is sufficient to the task at hand, but nothing more. It is well illustrated with many examples.
