Better Date Than Never Box Set- Books 7-10 is a 2015 Halco publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This box set contains four stories in the super popular Better Date than Never Series by Susan Hatler. For the sake of time and space, I have chosen to review Deja Date- Book nine in the series.
This is story centers around Melinda, a young woman who lost her father in a freak accident and whose mother never quite recovered from it. Now Melinda is going through a very rough patch due to losing her job when all of a sudden a golden opportunity falls into her lap.
The bakery that was such a big part of Melinda's life is on the market and all she needs to do is claim her share of the inheritance her father left her, which shouldn't be a huge problem. But, when she approaches her mother about the situation, she finds her world turned on it's axis.
The first issue Melinda faces is Nate's return home after a lengthy absence. She had been in love with Nate years ago, but after sharing an intimate moment, he left with his mother and never contacted her again. Now, Nate wants a second chance, but it seems the of them are like polar opposites.
But, the biggest obstacle she faces in regards to the bakery is the Carpe Diem her father added to his will, a development she hadn't counted on. Without much of a choice, Melinda begins working her way down the list, but the message her father was trying to send is more of impediment that she originally thought, and it looks like she could lose everything she ever wanted.
This is a charming story about letting go of one's guilt and grief and learning to step out of your comfort zone and take a few risk, and really living life with gusto.
Nate is a real keeper in this book and he does the absolute best thing for Melinda by making a compromise that, well, frankly was more fitted to who Melinda really is deep down. I don't know if she was ever the adventurous type, even before her dad's death, so there were times when I felt she was pushed into being someone she really wasn't. Therefore, I could see her point of view and understood why she was skeptical about Nate. Still, she does learn a lot about herself with a little intervention from a surprising source. I loved how everything came together in the end.
Overall this is a short, sweet, and heartwarming, and feel good kind of story.
4 stars.
All of the books in this delightful series are short and sweet, some with more heart tugging moments, like this one, but others having a lighter tone, with a touch of humor. I have read most of the books in this series and absolutely love them. These stories never fail to give me a little 'pick me up', no matter what kind of day I'm having.
I recommend this series for every one, and although some of these stories are connected, all of them can be read as a stand alone.
Susan Hatler has become one of my favorite authors! I love these books! They make me feel good reading them! The writing is great & you will not want to put them down. The characters seem pretty real & you can relate to them.you will really enjoy all of these books!
I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a series of fun stories, but each book is a stand alone. I find it better to review each book, and my reviews are below.
Driven to Date Jill had always planned out her life. She has a old crinkled paper with her goals written down that she had written out after high school, that she had in her purse. 1- Graduate college at 21 (Done), 2. Graduate law school at 24 (done) 3. Obtain job at well - established firm (done), 4. Purchase house by 26 (done), 5. Managing position at 29, - 6. Partner at 35 (33, if possible). Her life is thrown off balance when her law firm gave away her promotion to a nephew of one of the attorney's in the law firm. Jill has worked night and day, and deserved that promotion. When she didn't get the promotion, she realized her life has not been balanced for a very long time. Jill didn't have a social life, she didn't date, she didn't have hobby's. All she ever did was work. Her friend Kristen made her realize there was more to life, than just working. Kristen made Jill promise to go to her wedding. Jill went to the wedding in a new dress, and ran into some friends. One of her old friends asked if she may be interested in working at her law firm. While they were talking Jill said she was there with a date. Her friend wanted to meet the date, the only problem was Jill came alone. With Jill's quick thinking she walked up to Ryan, (a good looking stranger) and asked him to play along. I loved the way he flirted with her, and called her buttercup. The two danced, and had a good time. Monday was a interesting day at the office. Jill meet her new boss. The very man that took her job, and the very man she danced with at the wedding!!! I found this book to be fun. I normally don't like books written in first person, but the story itself made it worth reading. Jill added balance to her life. She found time to volunteer to feed the poor, made more time to visit friends, and dated her boss. ********************************************************************************* Up to date What I love about this series, is that Heroine is the one that goes after the Hero in the story. Jill pushed Greg away throughout the story. When she realized she wanted him, she didn't let fear of rejection stop her from asking him out. The story itself was good. Jill worked a boring office job, and hated it. She donated her talent for decorating to a auction to raise money for a charity. Jill got fired, and she reached for dreams. She had a passion for decorating, so why not make it into a career? Greg was her new neighbor, and won the auction. The two had fun working together to decorate his apartment. Greg was a ER. doctor. Jill grew up with her dad being a doctor. The pressure at work would cause her dad to drink more and more. Jill was really scared of dating anyone in the medical field. You'll have to read to see how Greg won her over. I'm not a fan of books written in first person as I have said before, but I did enjoy this sweet and fun story. ******************************************************************** Déjà Date This has been my favorite book in this series so far. Melinda pulled me right into the story. She lost her dad when she was 14. Her mother just found letters that her dad left to them. One for her mother, and one for her. That part of the story had me grabbing for the tissue box... Love a book that can make me cry. Her dad left her a list of things she had to do before she could get the life insurance. Her dad wanted her to seize the day. Nate was a boy that she shared her very first kiss with. He left town Shortly after that kiss, and never wrote, or called. Now he is back in town to help his dad. Nate's dad has been a friend of the family for many years. He was there for her family when her dad died. Melinda remembers working at Burney's bakery, and how much she loved it. Burney is now having health problems, and his doctors has told him that he shouldn't work. Melinda has never wanted to touch her dad's life insurance money, but now that she needs it to buy the bakery she has a list to finish before she can follow her dreams. The list was a fun list, like adopting a puppy. I really enjoyed this story! I enjoyed reading about Nate, and Melinda reconnecting, and getting to know each other again. The friendship never died throughout all the years apart, it picked right back up. Melinda didn't want to trust Nate, but her heart did. It was a sweet story. Real friendship is like that. It doesn't care how many years you go without seeing one another, real friends talk like you've been together every day. ********************************************************* Date and Dash The last book in this series was fun and entertaining to read. Mary Ann had found memories of a bracelet that her granny would let her wear when she was a little girl. Mary Ann would be upset, and her granny would slip the bracelet onto Mary Ann's wrist, and her tears would stop.
Mary Ann slipped into her sister's house, and saw where her sister was going to a auction that afternoon. Mary Ann picked up the information about the action, and saw a picture of her granny's bracelet. She knew she had to get to the auction, and bid on that bracelet. That bracelet would mean the world to her. On the way there, she rear ended a man in a suit, that insisted on having a police report done. She knew she would be late, so she asked a friend to bid on the bracelet for her.
Once she got to the auction she won, but what she won was not her granny's bracelet. Turns out there was a mix-up on what her friend bid on. What she won was a series of dates, and a spot on a reality TV show. The person she was to date, was the very person she rear ended. Now that I have read all the books in this box set, it's a toss-up as to Déjà Date , or this book, Date, and Dash was my favorite... I really enjoyed both books, and can't decide.
I've read a couple of the books in this series and really enjoyed them, but I completely fell in love with this boxed set! The stories can stand alone, but characters from other books do make appearances, so don't be surprised if you know how a relationship does or doesn't turn out.
The set starts out with a bang with Jill's story in Driven to Date. There is so much chemistry going on, almost right from the first page. Jill is a lawyer and when she loses out on a promotion, she grabs a guy at her friend's wedding to try and impress a potential employer. Ryan doesn't mind going along with the game. Jill is very committed her to work and has a list to accomplish by a very young age. Ryan is more laid back--he still gets his work done, but balances work with family and fun. They're good for each other, but sometimes being too opposite has it's disadvantages.
I love how the story is told in first person--it felt more intimate that way. Like I said, the romance is sizzling clean and I enjoyed the way the events unfolded, especially the ending. ***** Book 8, Up to Date, is Ginger's story, told in first person. She's got a talent for decorating, but is hesitant to break out on her own, until fate almost forces her to. In the previous book, she met Greg, but wasn't willing to have a long distance relationship. When he moves back to town, she realizes that she has to overcome her fears or spend a lifetime alone.
I love the references to Gilligan's Island--so much fun! I enjoyed Ginger's personality--she's more serious, especially about relationships and the future. As much as she tries to fight it, she's got sparks going with Greg and he's willing to be patient with her, but won't wait around forever. Ginger has fears and expectations to overcome and with that, big decisions to make. I loved the journey! ***** Deja Date, Book 9, is Melinda's story, told from her point of view. Melinda is a very "perfect" character, one who used to work with Ginger, but they were both laid off at the same time. She's intimidating. Because of her past, she's very disciplined and controlled, which results in her coming off as perfect, which scares the other girls off. Her dad passed away years before in a freak accident and only now does she discover a Carpe Diem list--one that she must do before she can get her inheritance. As with the other stories, Melinda has a lot to do in order to discover herself, get over her fears, and really live life.
She goes back to the bakery where she worked when she was younger and sparks are rekindled with the owner's son, Nate. The problem is, they're too different--he's adventurous and she's boring. I loved the chemistry! Ms. Hatler is a master at weaving those clean, yet toe-tingling moments and I enjoyed every single one of them. ***** Last, but not least, we get Mary Ann's story in Date and Dash. Mary Ann is the impulsive, crazy, and fun younger sister of Ginger (get the Gilligan's Island references yet?). Mary Ann makes a mad dash to an auction to buy her Grammy's bracelet that her mom sold off years ago and gets into a car accident. Good looking, but stuffy, Trevor makes things complicated for her and instead of bidding on the bracelet, she bids for a spot for a new reality show...and Trevor's her date! Now they have to convince the audience they're in love...but it may not be an act.
I love the way Mary Ann and Trevor come to learn more about themselves, Mary Ann especially. It is possible to be content with who you are, but compromises and change are sometimes necessary. Once again, sparks were flying off the pages and I couldn't get enough. I've come to know and love these characters and thoroughly enjoyed getting a glimpse into their lives. So much fun!
I'm going to go back and read the ones I haven't yet, and probably re-read the ones I have. This is a great series for a reader who loves light, clean, contemporary romance. Each story is short enough to read in a day, which is perfect for me. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this author's future books!
Content: mild romance (kissing, sparks, some non-descriptive mentions tongue); no language or religious elements. One story (#10) briefly mentions a mild abuse situation, but it's not graphic. Clean!
*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review*
I have loved reading the books in this series; they are all light, quick, fun and clean! I love how characters carry over from former books, but each book is also a standalone. I had already read books 7 and 8 so I was just going to skim them and go on to books 9 and 10 which I hadn’t read yet, but I quickly got drawn in by the characters and ended up re-reading both books!
#7 Driven to Date
At 29, Jill's life is perfectly on track - until it suddenly falls apart! She has spent 5 years slaving away at the law firm to be promoted to Managing Attorney, the next step on her way to partner. Just when she thinks the job is hers, the partners inform her they are hiring the nephew of one of the partners for the position instead. But fate gives her a good turn when at a colleague's wedding she runs into Madison McKenzie of McKenzie, Atkins, Haugan & Hall - a high-powered law firm. Madison is pregnant and looking to bring in another attorney to help with the workload, but Madison also believes that "a happy home life creates an atmosphere to thrive in business." Desperate to impress Madison, Jill invents a boyfriend on the spot... when Madison wants to meet the boyfriend, Jill seeks out the best man and asks him for a favor..
Ryan is happy to help out when Jill asks him to be her boyfriend for 10 minutes. He's shocked to find out while they are dancing that she is doing all this because the partners at her firm have hired one of their nephews instead of giving her the well-deserved promotion -- because he is that nephew! Ryan is every bit as intelligent and capable as Jill, but he also has a fulfilling life outside the office. I love how his laid back personality interacts with Jill's driven personality.
#8 Up to Date
Ginger is trying to play it safe. So instead of taking a risk and doing interior decorating which she is really good at, she spends her days bored out of her mind as an office manager. Instead of agreeing to go out with Greg Shaffer, the ER doctor she met at a dance club and can't stop thinking about, she goes out with guys she knows she has no future with.
But that's all about to change... When she agrees to let her friend Jill auction off her decorating services to help raise money for her charity organization, she isn't expecting her new handsome neighbor to win the auction. Suddenly nothing is safe any more.
#9 Deja Date Laid off from a job she didn't love (but it at least paid the bills), Melinda is unable to find a decent job so she has to move in with a roommate, Ginger (from Book #8). While she is unemployed she agrees to help Bernie run his bakery where she worked when she was younger. She agreed to help out before she found out that Bernie's son Nate was back in town - the same Nate who kissed her when she was 14 and then ran off to France with his mother. She really doesn't need another complication right now -- especially since Nate's job is all about adventure - and Melinda has already lived with the consequences of having an overly adventurous father.
#10 Date and Dash We have gotten to know Mary Ann through previous books so her "one strike" and you're out dating rule is familiar. In this book we find out why she has the rule.
When she accidentally rear ends Trevor Brooks he seems to be immune to her flirting. He quickly racks up multiple strikes and she is glad she will never have to see him again. Until she realizes that she has accidentally bid on him at the charity auction they were both on their way to when she rear-ended him. They are now on a reality TV show where they have to have multiple dates and convince everyone they are in love so they can win the cash prize -- so she can buy what she was originally supposed to bid on at the auction. Spending more time with Trevor allows them to get to know each other better and it doesn't take Mary Ann very long to start erasing those strikes...
Content: Clean Source: Review Copy (opinion is 100% my own)
This box set contains the last four books in the Better Date than Never series (aka books 7 to 10). I would have liked to see some bonus content considering that these are the last books. An extra or deleted scene would have been a nice addition for example. It's not bad that it didn't have any, but considering that the stories are short, I would have liked to see something with the couples of the first books. I read the books and I believe that the best way to review this Boxset is to write a review for each one. Each story can be read as stand alone, but it was good to read one after the other because things were fresh in my mind.
Driven to Date (4/5 stars): Driven to date is the seventh book in the Better Date than Never series and it follows the story of Jilly and Ryan. Jilly is the kind of person who is married to his work is totally fine with that. She is looking forward to getting the promotion she was promised and work so hard for, but then Ryan comes into the scene and steals her job and that makes her determined to find another job and takes Ryan;s help for that. Ryan was going to be her pretend boyfriend, but the mutual attraction is making harder to keep things platonic.
It might not be the best book in the series, but it's easy to like it and the characters as well as the story develop quite a lot which was something I wasn't expecting and it was a welcome surprise. I must admit that I liked Ryan more than Jill.
Up to Date (3/5 stars): I read Up to date about half a year ago and I re-read it again because I needed to write a review for the box set that includes this story (Books 7-10). Usually I don't re-read books and I was reminded why I tend to avoid that. I remembered almost every detail in this book and it was not as enjoyable as it was the first time.
Ginger is a familiar face to me and one of the few characters I remember from the series. Greg was introduced in Driven to Date, but his apperance was very brief. I would have liked to see more romance between those two. My original rating for this story was 4 stars, but I decided to change it to 3 after I came up with that realization. The fact that my re-reading experience didn't work out so well and that I found the story a little rushed didn't help at all.
Mary Ann is still as careless and irresponsible as I remembered her and I don't know how I will cope while reading her story which is coming soon in the tenth and final book of the series.
Déjà Date (4.5/5 stars): I really enjoyed this book. It was super short though, and the romance between the two heroes wasn't enough for me which is why I took a half star off the rating. My favorite person Melinda's dad and I got quite emotional with his letters. Melinda improved and evolved during the story, which is good and I was glad she realized what she should do with her life without much drama. If you are considering to read this book you should.
Date and Dash (4/5 stars): I tried to remember why I hadn't reviewed this book as soon as I finished it, but then I realized that I hated Mary Ann. From the previous books I found her completely irresponsible and she proved to be that when she hit a Trevor's car and then tried to shake it off. I think she is my least favorite person. Trevor is such a great guy though. As I am writing the review I keep remembering everything that happened and I only remember good things from him. He saved the book in my opinion. The lady who bought the bracelet wasn't nice and she is a villain (and probably the only one we ever saw in the series).
I believe that this is the final book in the series, but I would have liked a big book with all the characters. A novella about a big barbeque or something where all the couples and their children are together.
I love the series and always quick at reading them as I know they release. The better date than never is always a sweet, quick read, that leaves you oohing and aahing. Susan never fails to have me connecting with the characters. Each heroine is always dealing with an emotional past that has them to scared of opening up and connecting with their true loves at start. I personally know how hard it is to open up when you have been hurt my someone in the pass. The insecurities and self doubts that have you pushing away instead of pulling towards it.
In this box set with me two amazing lawyers, Jill and Ryan. You can feel the chemistry instantly when they first meet at a mutual friends wedding. Yet some issues arise and of course our heroine makes it hard for the hero. Yet Ryan remains persistent and sneak man that he is finds the patience to wait for her. This is what we discover in Driven to date. What happens when you let go of the reigns and stop being so driven?
Than up next we have Up to Date. How I wish I had the skill to redesign a home, maybe this way I would get lucky like Ginger and have the man who first stole my heart at a club bid for me. Lol. You must read to catch what I mean. But at last she as well is stubborn and allows her past to turn away from a guy who sees her as a sunrise. And ladies Greg will definitely have you melting. Who doesn't wish a doctor to set his eyes on you especially one sexy as hell. Well join me on their journey to see what happens. I know I laughed, got sad, and then smiled as Ginger worked her way to true love.
If stops one and two don't have you already sighing over the hunks who are patiently waiting for their heroine to come around, Susan gives us two more wonderful stories. Melinda in Deja Date was just amazing. I admire how she turned her life around and let her childhood mold her to be a strong female. But she as well had her insecurities. What female does not? Than a blast from the past comes to help her through it. Let's walk down memory lane with Melinda and see reconnecting with Nate and his dad Bernie will bring happiness back to her and her mom. Yep this story has not one but two love stories. ;)
Last and I have to say I love her story the best. I was glad to discover it in this set. I couldn't believe I had missed one. Date and Dash had it all for me. I was laughing at Mary Ann's errors through out the story. But she also charmed me and reminding me about my grandma. Her way of meeting our hero Trevor was comical to say the least. Than her whole one strike baseball metaphor is awesom. Who here has not at one point compared their love life to some way with baseball whether on dating or the intimacy form. Their path to love was both public in theory and life. I held my breath at trying to figure out why Susan gave us so many twist, but at the end the story came to a beautiful conclusion.
This box set is compiled of books 7-10 but you don't have to read the others to enjoy these four. However, if your like me and enjoy these you will want to rush to one click books 1-6 that are also in a box set of their own. I am glad that one day I discovered this amazing series and got hooked. I look forward to more better date than never books. As we always discover a new character that touch our hearts.
This 4 part series has carryover characters from one story to the next. Each is a stand-alone novella length book, but when read back to back, you may find that the supporting character from the previous novella becomes the main character in one of the future stories:
#7 Driven to Date: Jill's story
" 'Did it work?' I curled into him as his lips brushed the sensitive spot below my ear, making me shiver all the way to my stilettos. 'Mmm...maybe a little."
This story starts out as a pretend relationship and develops into true feelings. It is also about Jill's relationship with her career and how it closely mirrors her personal endeavors. I got the sense that her job was almost like her soul mate before she met Ryan.
I am not a lawyer but I could completely relate and connect with Jill, the main character. Everything that happened to her seemed amazingly realistic.
I have read every book in the "Better Date Than Never" series and this installment of the series seemed to be more intense than the other light hearted books that came before it.
#8 Up to Date: Ginger's Story
In this installment, Ginger faces her fears of dating and having children. She can't fight the strong feelings she has for Greg, and fate seems to be playing a role of serendipity to bring them together.
Ginger also fights with her true feelings about career. She would love to be an interior designer but her artistic endeavors conflict with her family's idea of what her career goals should be.
Overall, the story was about how important it is to stand up for your dreams and follow your destiny.
#9 Deja Date: Melinda's Story
Deja date is a romantic comedy about second chances.
Nate returns to Linda's life after her father's death. Her father left a crep diam list for her to complete before she can get her inheritance.
One of the items on the list is to only date someone who leaves you breathless... but Melinda is not sure that person should be Nate.
This is a great book to read if you are looking for a lighthearted romance with some deep connections. It was humorous from start to finish and the chemistry between Nate and Melinda kept the story interesting.
I would recommend reading Deja Date even if you are not a fan of romantic comedy.
#10 Date and Dash: MaryAnn's Story
Mary Ann is Ginger's sister from "Up to Date", #8 in the series. Even though Mary Ann is not a character with depth she is easy to connect with.
Her story is combination of a second chance, pretend relationship turned real, love at first sight story.
MaryAnn meets Trevor when she accidently crashes into his car. She is instantly attracted to him, but does not get the same feeling in return from Trevor.
They exchange insurance cards and are on their way.
Maryann gets a second chance with Trevor when they meet again at an auction where Maryann is going to bid to get back her Grandmother's bracelet. She wins a contest entry to the Romance Revealed contest and her partner in the contest is none other than Trevor.
Throughout the contest, they pretend to be lovers in order to win the cash prize. But are they really pretending? Sparks fly every time Trevor touches MaryAnn and she can see it in his eyes that he cares for her.
Overall the story is fun to read, light, fluffy, clean romantic comedy.
Jill is a career girl. When given an ultimatum: spend more time with her boyfriend or lose him, she chose her job. She wants to get to the top. Her job is everything to her. When she's up for a promotion due to another employee's leaving, she feels she's a shoe-in for the job. She is shocked to find out that her dream job is being given to one of the partner's nephews and she will continue to be second-in-command. Not only that, but she will have to work closely with the man who "stole" her position. Everyone tries to convince Jill to loosen up. She needs more balance in her life. Will her new boss be the one to convince her to mix business with a little pleasure? This was a great story with a strong female character. The guy was, of course, dreamy.
Déjà Date
Melinda Morgan is out of a job. She's had to take on a roommate to balance her expenses but with no prospective job offers she's afraid she may have to dip into her inheritance; something she swore she would never do. When her old friend is forced into early retirement due to ill health, she volunteers to manage his bakery for two weeks, until he finds a permanent replacement. But there's a complication in the form of her friend's son, a hot photographer who has no interest in the bakery but wants to help his dad out... -"“Hello, hotness!” Mary Ann’s sultry tone pulled me from my thoughts. “Hotness?” I repeated, following Mary Ann’s gaze out the window to where a guy on a motorcycle pulled to a stop in front of the bakery. He wore a black leather jacket over his broad shoulders, snug-fitting jeans, and black boots. He dismounted facing the bike, then turned in our direction as he pulled his helmet off. Hotness was not a strong enough word. Dark layered hair fell across this guy’s brow, accentuating the lightness of his jade-green eyes. His narrow jaw complimented full lips that seemed sensual, even from this far away. He was a mixture of style and danger that could tempt any woman to hop on the back of his bike and ride wherever he wanted to go."- Will Melinda have to work closely with her first high school crush... Or will he fly away again into the sunset on a surfing wave? And will she accomplish her dreams, or will her insecurities get in her way? Lots of twists and turns in this story and lots of events packed in. Another excellent read. Loved it. Reminded me of the movie P.S. I Love You.
Date and Dash
Mary Ann sees her grandmother's heirloom bracelet advertised at an auction and she knows she simply must have it. On her way to the auction she ends up in a fender bender with a gorgeous man and ends up having a friend do the bidding for her. She's prepared to bid everything she's got to win her bid. Unfortunately, in her distracted state, she tells her friend the wrong item number to bid on. Is her grandmother's bracelet gone forever? Or will she realize she won a much greater prize at the auction?
This entire series is absolutely delicious! Any and all of these stories could (and should) be made into TV movies! They are clean reads with fast-paced plots and engaging characters. I love that they are written in the first person. Susan Hatler is a gifted writer and I've enjoyed everything she's written. I highly recommend this series. 5 star reads!
*I received a copy of this box set in exchange for an honest review.*
Romance novels are not generally something that I enjoy, but this series has been a lot of fun. They're short, clean (particularly in comparison to a lot of other romance novels I hear about), and have realistic characters.
Driven to Date: 4/5 Stars The relationship between Jill and Ryan in this is probably the most developed relationship in this series. They are instantly attracted to each other, and spend a lot of time together, but it takes place over a few weeks and not just a few days. And they are working together, getting to know each other as they are growing to love each other. It was really cute.
I loved Jill in here. She was frustrating at times, but easy to relate to. It was nice to see her step out of her comfort zone and try some new things. She started out not really having any friends or a social life and I loved seeing things take off for her as she started trying to enjoy life more.
Up to Date: 4/5 Stars Ginger was a really frustrating character. I liked her, but she drove me crazy. She had a lot of issues with her parents because of her dad's choices (perhaps influenced by his career) and had a really hard time overcoming them, even when there was no evidence that things would ever be like that in her current situation. She just seemed stuck in a loop.
Aside from that, I did really like this story. Greg was supportive and kind, even when he was being pushed away. The relationship between Greg and Ginger was cute. Her interior design job was a nice touch and made the story even more fun.
Deja Date: 3/5 Stars Melinda frustrated me even more than Ginger did. While I could definitely understand where a lot of her insecurities and issues came from, I didn't really like the way they were handled. I think she would have been forced to face some of these things earlier and not all at once.
While I enjoyed the fact that Melinda and Nate had a history, I would have preferred this be handled a little differently. A lot would change in fourteen years. And the fact that there had been no communication just didn't work for me. They were really cute and I enjoyed that their had been a previous connection, it just wasn't handled how I would have liked. Still a fun read.
Date and Dash: 4/5 Stars Mary Ann was a lot more fun here than she was in Ginger or Melinda's stories. It was easier to understand where she was coming from while inside of her head. And instead of seeming flighty, she just seemed impulsive. She could be frustrating at times, but the overall story and her development were nice.
Mary Ann and Trevor were a cute pair, even if they did have a bit of a rough start. At times it didn't really feel like Trevor was a part of the story. It was nice to have some focus on Mary Ann and what was happening with her life, but I would have liked some more development for his character. I did enjoy the two of them opening up to each other about why the money for the TV contest they're participating in was important to them. It was nice to see them actually understand each other.
Box set received in exchanged for an honest review. 4 Stars Review for the 1st book
This is a box set of 4 Better Date Than Never books each one focusing on a different character that has featured in the other books also. Can be read as stand alone but a loosely connected to each other.
Jill has worked as a lawyer at the same firm for many years. She's fiercely loyal and her work life balance scale is firmly tipped to 'work'. She rarely has down time and puts everything she has into her cases so when her department manager is leaving Jill presumes she has the promotion in the bag. Wrong. Jill is invited into the boardroom to inform her that not only has she not go the job, that it has been given to one of the partners nephews and he's starting next week.
Jill goes to a friends wedding to let her hair down and spots a handsome stranger, her friends usher. Later in the night Jill asks the usher to play along and act as her boyfriend for a few minutes in front of a potential new employee. The ushers find says he'd be happy to help and that a few minutes shouldn't be a problem anyway as women usually only keep 'Ryan's' attention for ten minutes anyway. Jill put the handsome stranger down as a player but a good looking one at that so when she kisses him to make their 'relationship' look plausible, she quite enjoys it.
The following Monday at work and the entire workforce is introduced to their new boss, the partners nephew, Ryan. Yes, THE Ryan. Jill has already decided she hates Ryan for pinching her promotion but as time goes on he shows himself to be a true gentleman making it more and more difficult for Jill to keep on hating him. When Jill finally decides that she actually does quite like Ryan, she remembers his friends' '10 minute' comment and realises that he cannot be trusted with her heart.
Slowly Ryan shows Jill what she's been missing and saves her from a life of work, work and more work. They finally confess their love for one another, each making their own sacrifices for the relationship to prosper. I really, really liked Ryan and infant all the other characters too. Good writing style and now errors that i noted either.

I received a copy of this Better Date than Never Boxed Set (Books 7-10) in exchange of an honest review... so here it is...
I can’t have enough of these stories. They make you feel the heartbreaks and the butterflies. Susan Hatler is brilliant in her writing.
Every book in the series is an independent story even though some characters are mentioned in one or two stories. Nevertheless I highly recommend to read the entire series if you’re a junkie of romance novels.
Driven to Date Aww!!! I love Jill’s story. Jill’s a lawyer and as the title implies, she’s driven in what she sets her mind. Even though her life starts to crumble and at some point it does, what I love the most is that she begin to believe in herself and rearrange her life for better.
Up to Date Great!!! This is Ginger’s story, she’s an artist at heart, her story begins when she meet this handsome, hot, sexy and caring guy who make her change her mind about dating and love.
Déjà Date One word.... Lovely!!! This is Melinda’s story, it portraits a young women who tries to find herself and follow her dreams before she waste more time doing something she'll regret and doesn't love. And while following her heart and dreams, falls in love with a caring, intelligent and sexy man.
Date and Dash Once again... Awesome!!! This is Mary Ann’s story… yes Ginger’s sister, although Mary Ann resisted love, it hit her and hit her hard.
Let me say… again... you can't get enough of these love stories, they're so lovely you can't stop reading...
You'll love these stories if you're a hopeless romantic like me ^_^
I highly recommend this series, every book and stories are inspiring and full of romance.
Driven to Date - 4 stars - Another great book in the series. Jill is a career driven attorney who gets skipped over for a promotion because of nepotism. Because of her career, she put her personal life completely on hold. Ryan is the attorney who got the job she wanted. They meet, start up a fake relationship to show the partners she has a life, then (yeah!!!) over time (not instantly) they fall in love. I like seeing Jill not only develop a relationship with Ryan, but with friends. Plus, it was nice to see some of the characters from the earlier books
Up to Date - 3 stars - This was just okay for me. Ginger is an office manager who wants to be an interior designer so she puts her services up at a charity auction. Greg is an ER doctor who went on a date with her and wants more. But she has issues with doctors because of her family and refuses a relationship even though there are sparks. I wasn't a huge fan of Ginger in this. She's too insecure. I didn't really feel a connection or see one develop between her and Greg. It is still well written and there were some cute parts (Gilligan's Island kitties!) that make it worth a read.
Deja Date - 3 stars - This is my least favorite of the series. I had a really hard time relating to Melinda or understanding why Nate would like her. She was overly insecure, not friendly, and so stubborn she'd lose her dreams rather than change her mind. The things that happened in her past were bad but not so horrible that she'd be that damaged. Nate was such a sweetie, she's very lucky he put up with her. The ending was cute though.
Date and Dash - The end of the series and it ends with quirky Mary Ann, sister to Ginger, and friend to Melinda.
This box contains four different stories that are connected to each other but not necessary involved in the storyline. Stories that are humorous when love is involved.
Driven to Date, Book 7 We meet lawyer Jill Parnell who promotion is taken by nepotism as she tries to keep the attraction between them at bay. But when another offer finds her using him as boy friend material what will happen when they spend more time together?
Up to Date, Book 8 Ginger Nielsen donated her interior decorating skills to charity but soon that is not all she finds herself donating. Can she manage not to get her heart broken along the way?
Déjà Date, Book 9 When Melinda Morgan finds herself receiving a letter from her dad who died when she was fourteen things were about to change. In order to receive her inheritance she must fulfill a Carpe Diem list which would give her enough money to buy a local bakery. Can she manage to fulfill the list one which includes the return of a former love with the aid of marshmallow fudge?
Date and Dash, Book 10 Impulsive Mary Ann Nielsen finds herself bidding on the wrong auction after getting into a car accident. She finds herself winning a reality TV dating show with risk management analyst Trevor Brooks who happens to be the guy car she hit. Mary Ann must find a way to win, in order to get the chance to buy back her grandmother’s bracelet.
I had read each story before and will post my reviews from them here. Driven to Date~ I loved this book! It was great to read about Jill realizing what's truly important. Another book by Susan Hatler that I really enjoyed. I can't wait for the next!! Up To Date~Another awesome book by Susan. I loved Ginger's story! It was great to read her follow her passion and finally be herself instead of what she thought she should do that is practical! Greg... oh every woman should have a Greg who will stand by and wait for you, but also help see the beauty in yourself! Loved this book. This is one of my favorite series and I am already waiting for the next! Deja Date ~I so loved this story about Melinda. She was always so insecure and had taken to shielding her heart. But after quite a few surprises she has a chance at real happiness. Old fears are hard to break and suddenly everything is wrong. Can she finally put her fears behind her? Melinda and Mate's story is a fun read but also has a great lesson behind it. Another wonderful story by Susan!! Date and Dash~ I was so excited to read about Mary Ann. It was great to see her grow so much. And Trevor, oh wow! How the two first meet and then thrown into a crazy show was so fun to read. I loved this story.
This is an incredible set of stories! A must buy and read!
7 Driven to Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 7)A Woodward Systems Corporation Romance by Susan Hatler 4 stars I purchased the short novella Driven to Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 7) by Susan Hatler and this review was given freely. Diverging slightly, this novella involves the coincidental and ironic romance of lawyer friends of Woodward Systems Corporation and of Kristen and Ethan. A strong female character, a protective and caring lead male character, helping the homeless, adversity over gender bias, the change in Jill and her father, and of course the sweet romance make this an interesting and heartwarming story.
8 Up to Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 8)A Woodward Systems Corporation Romance by Susan Hatler 4 stars I purchased the short novella Up to Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 8) by Susan Hatler and this review was given freely. Dissatisfaction with her office manager job, Ginger's world gets turned upside down by her roommate sister her friends advertising her artistic and decorating skills, and her fears of alcoholism and an abusive relationship caused by the return of ER Doctor Greg who coincidentally is her new neighbor. Short, sweet, humorous and ironic with a happy ending.
Better Date than Never series by Susan Hatler was an enjoyable read. There is 1 book and 3 novellas included in this boxed set. I have read each one in this series and have never been disappointed. Any of these books can be read as a standalone but it's been fun for me to read each one as they have been released because I have the opportunity to see "old friends" from the previous books and get some insight into how their lives are progressing since I saw them last.
Jill, Ginger, Melinda and Mary Anne are young women who are struggling a little in their current jobs. They also each have some emotional baggage from their pasts. Each one of them grow so much in their stories and meet the men who might be the one man they have been dreaming of. There is love, humor, a few tears and satisfying HEAs for each one of them as Jill, Ginger, Melinda and Mary Anne face their problems. Their friends are there to cheer for them and give some good advice along the way. I enjoyed spending time with all of them.
I was given an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
The boxed set of Better Date Than Never books 7-10 is by Susan Hatler. The books are short and are quick reads. They all follow the same pattern for the first two chapters or so and then they go their own ways. They involve young professional girls who are having problems at their jobs when something happens to give them a way out. All of them involve the Founding Friendships charity set up by a friend of theirs. All the girls end up as friends and try to help each other out. The books, of course, all involve a handsome young man who just by his presence causes problems. The books are humorous and the girls do get themselves into some interesting situations. Usually when there are so many books in a series, I find the longer you read them, the more predictable and uninteresting they get. These books, however predictable they may be, definitely do not lose their interest. In fact, it increases. I found myself very glad this was a boxed set so I didn’t have to wait to get the other books. Even waiting on an ebook would have been too long. They are clean in language and graphic scenes and are just plain fun to read.
(Driven to Date, Book 7) Jill and Ryan pretending to date, office romance (Up to Date, Book 8) Ginger lost her job but wants to venture into something not so stable but something she loves but the way she grew up she is afraid to take a chance on herself and love (Déjà Date, Book 9) Melinda's dad died when she was young but wanted her to live life, the man who broke her heart as a teen is back and she has to figure out if she can let him in (Date and Dash, Book 10) Mary Ann ends up on a reality show very funny.
Cute chick light reading the books are not too long and quite entertaining. I laughed at some of the things the girls did, the characters appear in each of the books which I enjoy
I have enjoyed the Better Date Than Never series from the very beginning. Light-hearted, engaging and realistic romances that touch the heart of any lover of romance. These are people who could live down the street. Sure, sometimes I want the fantasy, but an honest to goodness, could be my best friend in a few of these stories can’t be beat either.
In this particular boxed set you’re getting the latest novels in the series – all in one place. I have read and reviewed these novels as they came out. And not one of these funny, charming stories disappoints. If you need to get caught up on the series then this might be the perfect way for you. Check it out.
I absolutely enjoyed this boxed set of Better Date Than Never ~ Books 7-10. It's just as fabulous as the stories in the boxed set of Books 1-6. Susan Hatler never fails to deliver. The stories are touching & entertaining. The books are intertwined with girlfriends, & their new & longtime friendships. The stories takes you through the up & downs of their relationships. Sometimes you need encouragement from your friends, to see things differently. You just never know when Mr. Right maybe standing right in front of you. I enjoyed this so much! It's one of the ones you can't put down! A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!!
I received an ARC of this book for my honest review. I loved these stories so much that I left separate reviews for each book! As a whole this series has been a delight to read! They are sweet and funny but most of all they evoke several different emotions. I laughed and cried as well as rejoiced for the happy couples as they come together. This whole series intertwines so it's fun to have the characters reappear in the next book. I can honestly say that I will be reading more from this author. Please don't let this be the end of the series! Pretty please with a biscotti on top!
Received this free ARC Copy from the author for an honest review. Four beautiful caring girls, Jill, Ginger, Melinda and Mary - Anne. All friends and meeting their (unknowingly) man of their dreams. Absolutely loved these four stories. So much love..hopes. .dreams and it makes you appreciate things in your own life. Just loved it
I am really enjoying this series! It is great getting to know all of these people and they are in each other's books so you get to know them better. These books make me laugh and cry! I am looking forward to reading more in this series!
4 funny love stories that are all different from each other but a couple of the mains characters from the different stories are friends, live near each other or work at the same place. I enjoyed reading all the stories.
Come and join in the roller coaster of love! In each of these stories there is a message of strength in love all wrapped in heartwarming love Susan Hatler is without doubt the Grande Dame of sweet love!
Driven to Date This was a fun blend of several different themes. To start, there’s the fake relationship, then it mixes in enemies-to-lovers and inter-office romance. There’s a couple of detours that the main story takes, that I’m not sure made perfect sense for the book as a whole, but I loved the overall message that taking time to care for yourself and your relationships is just as important as caring for your career. Up to Date I’ve been looking forward to Ginger’s story from the first moment we met her. I was hoping for something a little more than this, though. For me, this book had too many dislikable characters. I didn’t much like any member of Ginger’s family, including Ginger herself. Greg has the patience of a saint. He and the cats were some of the best parts of the book to me. I appreciated that Ginger is able to realize that she’s holding unfair prejudices because of her father’s behavior during her childhood and is able to put a stop to her doormat behavior with her mother and sister. I didn’t like that the solution to her relationship problems was to decide that being a wife and mother were her new aspirational goals. Déjà Date I can’t. I just can’t. This has a really fun premise, but it’s based on something that is absolutely ridiculous. And couldn’t happen in the real world. Is it an inheritance or an insurance payout? ‘Cause if it’s one, the plot sort of works, but if it’s the other, it doesn’t at all. There are so many plot holes and continuity errors. Like, how does a dead man know to put conditions on an insurance payout that doesn’t even exist until after he’s gone? How can a trustee still have control over those funds when the recipient is over the age of majority and of sound mind? The list is a very fun idea for the plot, but it hasn’t got a single legal leg to stand on. As much as I love a second chance and I enjoyed seeing Melinda and Nate fall back in love, I just couldn’t get past the impossibility of the plot. There’s also a large number of spelling and grammar errors that were somewhat distracting. Even though it’s about as subtle as a sledgehammer, I liked the message to live your life while you have the opportunity. Date and Dash I enjoyed this story a lot more than I was expecting to. Mary Ann is flighty and impulsive, but those traits hide a surprisingly tender heart. I really liked Trevor. He may start out looking like a stuffed shirt, yet he’s another one who’s hiding emotional depths that are more than I was expecting. My heart nearly broke multiple times for how much Mary Ann devalued herself. Thankfully the reality show challenges were fun and silly and helped to break up some of the ‘heavier’ scenes.
Driven to Date: Another amazing book! I loved Jill’s story and, of course, I adored seeing past characters. The multiple different relationships that were featured in this book were amazing in the intricacies of the romantic, platonic, and familial connections. Generally when series start getting this many books out they tend to not be as good, but Hatler’s books, if anything, are even better!
Up to Date: A fun romance with awesome, vibrant characters. I love how Hatler can make a shorter story so powerful. Good life lessons in this book too.
Deja Date: I absolutely adored this heartfelt short romance. I savored it. I loved the wonderful Characters and the storylines. The second chances at love and life and happiness. The only thing that could improve on this perfection would be making it twice as long! Or maybe make it never end... ;)
Date and Dash: Wow. Just wow. Hatler outdid herself with this storyline. Pure gold. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was stunned at the end to learn of a connection to a different series.

These four books were a pleasure to read. They are short, sweet and all end happily.
