A great start to a new series and I absolutely loved it!! A great told story which left me with warm and fuzzy feelings. The Silver Sentinels, a wonderful group of older towns people, are the only ones who suspect foul play when Bob, the manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast dies. Kelly the interim manager starts looking into the things that happened leading up to Bob's death and soon agrees that there are some things worth looking into. A highly recommended read!

1.5 stars

The story wasn't too bad, it was just that the writing needed a lot of work. Awkward dialogue, repetitiveness, choppy sentences. There was a character who was supposed to have a thick Russian accent, but the way he talked was more like that of a caveman. Had the writing been improved, the book still would have gotten no more then 3 stars. There was nothing new, and it followed the same formula and had the same tropes in all cozy mysteries.

I didn't buy Kelly's reason to investigate the murder. She came off as a busybody, not a sleuth. There is a difference. I felt she used the B&B's reputation as an excuse just to pry into everyone's business. And the romance was so stiff and forced.

Kelly Jackson has flown into a small town in Mendocino County to run a bed and breakfast for her boss. The previous manager fell to his death off a cliff, and Kelly quickly begins to wonder if it was murder. As strange events start happening, Kelly is certain of her conclusion. But can she prove it before something else bad happens?

The book doesn’t waste much time debating whether a murder happened or not, instead spending time on Kelly trying to prove it. There’s plenty to keep you reading to find out exactly what is going on. The characters are super strong, and I fell in love with them. The suspects were a tad weak, but that’s a minor complaint. The writing needed a bit more polish near the beginning, but again, that’s a minor complaint.

3.5-Not bad. The mystery flowed with enough clues to keep the story moving. A neurodivergent child, relationship building, and senior sleuths all make for a cozy formula.

4-1/2 Stars. Kelly Jackson, executive administrator of Resorts International, is called when an emergency arises at Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast on the beautiful California coastline. The manager, Bob, has died in a fall from a cliff. His office has been searched, leading Kelly to believe there could be more to his demise than just losing his balance. A group of elderly town residents, calling themselves the Silver Sentinels, volunteer to decode some cryptic notes Bob left in his safe. They are an interesting and entertaining group who refuse to let their age keep them from having fun.

This debut mystery started off a bit slow for me, then the pace quickened, and I really began to enjoy the plot and the charming characters the author created. The young boy, Tommy, is really a delight, and his dog, Fred, is such a loyal companion. I look forward to future stories in this series.

Kelly Jackson has been sent as an interim manager at Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast in Northern California. The previous manager was found dead at the bottom of a cliff. The report was it was an accidental fall.

Upon arrival, she had an employee stop at the site to look at where the fall occurred. It looked like an unlikely area for an accidental fall. Kelly overhears talk from a group that calls themselves "The Silver Sentinels." They are retired and they were the first start the talk of murder rather than accident. They meet at the Redwood Cove Inn and Kelly listens to their discussions. They plan on doing their own investigation as they have solved other crimes before.

The strength of the book for me was the characters. Kelly is very likable . She is level headed and independent. She is still finding her way into her niche in life. She is very caring and thoughtful to the people and staff around her.

Tommy and his basset dog Fred also add to this book. Tommy is a very smart little boy who has problems socializing with his classmates due to being different. Fred is his Bassett dog who was being trained as a cancer detecting dog but was dropped from the class. Tommy's mother Helen cooks meals and makes food baskets for the customers. Oh, how I would like Helen to make a breakfast for me. These are just a few of few of the enjoyable characters in the book.

Another thing I liked was this wasn't a padded mystery to ensure 300 pages. It was under 200 pages and had a very complete and tight mystery. It was a fast and entertaining cozy mystery read. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kelly Jackson is an executive administrator of Resorts International. That means when needed she travels to a resort property to troubleshoot the problem and fill in where necessary. She is sent to the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast in Northern California when the manager is found dead at the bottom of a cliff. The police have determined that it was an accident but The “Silver Sentinels” do not agree. This group of senior citizens think their friend Bob was murdered. They draw Kelly into their confidence and she wonders if they are right. When she is attacked, she knows that wasn’t an accident, so maybe Bob’s fall wasn’t either. So in addition to stepping into Bob’s shoes at the B&B she finds herself nosing around to find his killer.

Kelly Jackson is a very engaging character. Her boss believes all the employees at all their resorts are family. That is just how Kelly treats everyone she meets at Redwood Cove B&B. From Helen, the cook, and her son Tommy, that leave in a small guest house on the property, to Daniel, the handyman along with his daughter Allie, and all the wonderful “Silver Sentinels”, she treats them all as genuine friends. I liked them all too!

I loved Fred, Tommy’s adorable basset hound. There is a heartwarming back story on how they came together.

The setting is absolutely gorgeous and Kelly has a wonderful view from her room. Even the morning fog sounds absolutely delightful.

It seems that Bob Phillips was an extraordinary man with a big heart. He was very eco-conscious and believed in protecting all parts of the environment. Could this have gotten him killed? The story takes several twists as Kelly tries to eliminate suspects. This twists were very well written. The ending was full of suspense and a complete surprise.

The characters are what really stand out to me in this story. From youngsters to oldsters they are an amazing group. I want to pack my bags and head for the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast and meet up with them today. There should be any more trouble there right?? Well, I will be starting the next book in the series right away. I will keep you posted!

4.5 stars from me!

Murder at Redwood Cove is the first in a new cozy mystery series. Kelly Jackson works as an Executive Administrator for Resorts International and has been sent on temporary assignment to oversee the management of Redwood Cove Bed & Breakfast in the heart of Mendocino County, CA.

Previous Innkeeper Bob Phillips slipped and fell while hiking along the cliffs and plunged to his death and his wife subsequently suffered a massive heart attack and is recovering in the nearby intensive care. The Inn is busy preparing for the upcoming Taste of Wine and Chocolate Festival and Kelly's boss Michael Corrigan needs someone to make sure things run smoothly until he can hire a replacement for Bob.

Upon arrival at the B&B, Kelly is greeted by handyman Daniel Stevens and his young daughter Allie, Housekeeper/Cook Helen Rogers, her rambunctious son Tommy and his faithful basset hound, Fred. Soon Kelly stumbles upon a group of elderly men and women meeting in the Inn conference room who call themselves the Silver Sentinels. It seems that everyone except Deputy Sheriff Bill Stanton doubts that the loveable, experienced hiker accidentally slipped and fell to his death and the Silver Sentinels have taken up the cause to prove the man was murdered.

A terrific, fast paced storyline that kept the pages turning. A beautiful setting and a great cast of characters oozing with genuine warmth for each other. It was refreshing to see young Allie stick up for her best friend Tommy against the schoolyard bullies and the love between the boy and his dog left me begging for more. An amazing first in a series and I will definitely be looking forward to the release of the second, Murder at the Mansion.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley via Kensington Publishing. While I was not required to write a review I am more than happy to give my honest opinion.

Murder at Redwood Cove by Janet Finsilver was a great introduction for me to this author.

Kelly Jackson was a very relatable character and I totally enjoyed getting to know her throughout this book. She's smart and independent with a big heart. I found the corpration that Kelly works for to be fascinating because I have never heard of a resort company that actually cared about their employees as depicted in this book. What a lovely place to work in the real world.

The supporting characters also won my heart, especially the Silver Sentinels. I look forward to learning more about Daniel and Allie, and Helen and Timmy as this series progresses. The plot was smoothly written with a great description of Redwood Cove. It sounds like a place that I would love to visit. I enjoyed the twists so I never really guessed who the bad guy/guys were until the reveal. I will definitely be looking for the next book in this series.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and Kensington in exchange for an honest review. This review is strictly my own thoughts regarding this book.

When the manager of Redwood Cove Bed & Breakfast dies suddenly, Kelly is sent to fill in for him and keep the hotel running. But she quickly comes to realise that all is not as it seems and it's possible he was murdered. With a little help from a group of elderly amateur sleuths she starts her own investigation, and as she digs she finds herself the target of a desperate criminal.

It's difficult to review and rate cozy mysteries. They all follow a set of rules and authors break them at their peril. Murder at Redwood Cove is fairly typical in that sense. There is nothing in this book I found particularly surprising...except the villain. I have to be honest, nine times out of ten, I pick the bad guy very early in the book, but not here. I was completely blind-sided.

So an entertaining cozy mystery which would normally rate 3 stars gets an extra star for keeping me guessing to the end.

I love curling up with a new cosy mystery and this is a new series AND a new author to me. I will definitely look out for more by this author.
Kelly has just taken over running a B&B after the previous manager met a tragic end. His friends- known as the Silver Sentinels think that there is a mystery to be solved surrounding his death.
A really great group of characters have you turning the pages and taking them all to heart. What will they reveal about Bob’s death?
There is a Wine and Chocolate event going on- and who wouldn’t want to go to such an event. The setting is described so well you’d love to book in for your own stay.
She has a great writing style keeping you turning the pages and finding yourself really caring about their community!
With many thanks to Net Galley for a copy of this book.

A nice solid start to new series. I enjoyed the characters. Lots of material for future books. A local senior citizen group that meets at the B&B thinks their friend was murdered.

Murder at Redwood Cove is a solid entry into Janet Finsilver’s Kelly Jackson mystery series. Following the “accidental” death of Bob Phillips, the manager of the Redwood Cove B&B, Kelly Jackson is sent to cover for him until a replacement can be found. No sooner does she arrive, however, than it becomes clear that Bob’s death likely was no accident. Together with a group of senior citizens calling themselves the Silver Sentinels, she sets out to prove it.

What I enjoyed most about the book were the characters. Despite trying to track down a killer, Kelly acts professionally and reasonably throughout. Likeable, too, are the Silver Sentinels. They contribute in a very practical sense to the investigation and are not just an afterthought. The rest of the supporting cast are likewise endearing, particularly Tommy, the son of one of the B&B’s employees. Tommy and his Basset Hound, Fred, are the social heart of this novel: he, with his mild Asperger’s and Fred, who has been trained to detect cancer. Ms. Finsilver handles both of these topics deftly and respectfully.

The mystery itself is quite entertaining, ramping up with the requisite dangerous situations and variety of suspects. It is further complicated by an interesting subplot involving abalone poaching that keeps the reader guessing until the end. The final reveal, although somewhat unexpected, is sufficiently foreshadowed, and, ultimately, satisfying.

All told, Murder at Redwood Cove is a great start to what promises to be an exciting series set on the California coast. I look forward to reading the next installment.

The first book in a new series. It is an excellent cozy. That is a quick easy read that will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. Kelly Jackson arrives at Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast to take over as manager. She find Bob Phillips had fallen to his death from a cliff. A group of Senior citizens claimed he was murdered while the Sheriff says there is no evidence of Murder and it is rule an accident. Strange occurrences keep happening that have other explanations. Kelly sets out to find answers to these events. I am looking forward to the next book.

I totally enjoyed this one, which was the first in a series. The writing flowed so well, making it an easy read. Loved all the characters as well as the California setting, specifically Mendocino County. Great mystery based on something that really does happen along the Coast. I had a slight suspicion about the identity of one of the villains but never fully guessed. Great job!

Read this today when I needed a distraction. It's light and fun. I enjoyed it. Nothing spectacular. Called the murderer early based on "person who seems the least likely" reasons. But I think I care enough to try another one in the series, so win?

Not a bad little book. Yes, the writing may be simple and non-taxing on my little grey cells but it was what the blurb said it would be 'Bed, breakfast and a body'. 🙂

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review

This sounded like a fun cozy mystery and I am so glad I got approved to read and review this one netgalley. It's just a bit different from most of the cozy mysteries I've read and I really enjoyed it. firstly it's told in the first person point of view, this is the first cozy mystery I've read that did that and I thought it really worked well. Then there was the mystery, Bob the previous manager of the Bed and Breakfast died in an accident, but a group of senior citizens are convinced it was murder. So the focus was more on proving Bob had been murdered and finding the murderer. I though it was a nice twist and made for a fun storyline.

The mystery kept me guessing, there are four suspects from almost the beginning and it's hard to narrow the suspects down as they all seem to be on the scene or have had access to certain information, so until the very end it stays a mystery who has done it and why. And then there are two delightful plot twists towards the end, which were so well done and where so different from what I expected. Bonus points for that! I love a mystery that can take me by surprise like that.

This book had a fun cast of characters, from Helen to her son Tony and his adorable dog Fred and the group of senior citizens who help solve crimes and such the Silver sentinels. I really liked all these quirky characters and how they brought live to the book. The sheriff isn't convinced Bob has been murdered and I actually thought from his point of view it made sense why he stayed with that point of view until there was really evidence and by then he was the first to run into action. It was great to see Kelly, the main character jump on the case and while investigating and running the bed and breakfast she slowly grows fond of the place. I also felt like we got a feel for her character and we learn a bit about her past as well. I liked how she was dedicated to solving this mystery, but also was responsible, didn't rush into things and gladly asked others for help. I liked how she listened to the Silver sentinels and took them serious and also took time to pay attention to Tony and his dog. Tony and his dog where two of my favourite characters in this book and they also play a vital role in the plot.

There is a small hint to a possible romance, but only small. Maybe it will be build upon in later books? For now this character was only introduced and I wasn't really sure what Kelly saw in him as I didn't really feel their connection. But like I said there isn't really much focus on that part, so maybe that's the reason I didn't really feel the romance.

The bed and breakfast setting close to the coats made for a fun setting. Although I would've liked to get a better view of the bed and breakfast. There are some descriptions of the surrounding area, but not as many from the bed and breakfast itself. The small town feel and close knit community was nice too.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this book! It's told from first person perspective, which really worked for me. And the mystery was done well and kept me guessing. I also liked how it started off as an accident, but there were hints he might have been killed. There are two great plot twists towards the end that took me by surprise and I thought they were well done. I liked the main character Kelly and the side characters brought this story alive as well. There are the Silver Sentinels, Tony and his dog, other members of the community, Helen and Daniel and Tony his friend Adie. Kelly was a great main character with how she was dedicated to solving the mystery, but also level headed. The coastal bed and breakfast setting and small town community were great too! All in all this was a great start of a new series and I am looking forward to the next books in this series!

– This arc was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review –

Why did I request this book ? Because it’s a cozy mystery, takes place in a charming bed & breakfast near the sea and bonus, there’s a Chocolate & Wine festival. Come on, who wouldn’t be tempted ?

And my impression was easily confirmed : a really nice heroin, a good cast of secondary characters including a dog, a young boy, a sherif who’s not as bad as he first appears to be and an endearing group of elderly detectives who call themselves the Silver Sentinels :
“When you’re gray-haired and slow-moving, you often become invisible to younger people,” Gertie said quietly. “We can sit for hours on a bench with no one acknowledging us.”

As I turned the pages, I could see, hear, smell, taste everything the author wrote about, and it’s a great compliment for me ! I was surprised to read about such cheeses as Fourme d’Ambert, Morbier, Etorki, and so on, I didn’t think they would be known outside of France. There was a lot of organic food and drinks, which I appreciated very much. That mushroom burger… My mouth watered, and I don’t usually like burgers ! Even knowing there is a killer running loose around there, I’d be dying to go and visit Redwood Cove – especially the restaurants :)

The characters were warm-hearted, people you’d like to meet and chat with. So even if I found the murderer early on (because of something somebody said, but I wasn’t sure of my pick), I took great pleasure in reading this mystery and reading about the heroin’s story : such a kind young woman, friendly, who tried to find her place in this world, with the hint of a possible romance.

To sum it all up, I’d never read anything by this author but I intend to follow this series. There are a few hints at something that happened in Colorado, so maybe we’ll get a novella explaining how Kelly got hired in the first place ? I’d love to. And I’m waiting for the next instalment to be released next june !

An exquisite, delightful read, warmly recommended.

I was really impressed by a presentation author Janet Finsilver did during Left Coast Crime, and I just couldn't resist buying a copy of her first Kelly Jackson mystery set in northern California. Murder at Redwood Cove is every bit as good as Finsilver's talk.

The northern California setting is put to good use in this book, and I also learned a bit about running a bed and breakfast as well as a foodie festival. In fact, by book's end I was wishing I could book a room at the Redwood Cove B&B.

Finsilver has assembled a strong, interesting cast, led by Kelly Jackson, a young woman who's smart, sassy, brave, and definitely not lacking in common sense. She wants to solve the mystery, but first and foremost in her mind is the safety of everyone involved. That's such a refreshing change from heroines with out-of-control curiosity. The retired "posse" calling themselves the Silver Sentinels are good folks to join an investigation because they each have their own special skill set-- even if it's sometimes just being in the immediate vicinity to keep an eye on someone who's in danger. Old folks just blend into the woodwork, don't you know?

Another part that I really appreciated in this book was the young boy Tommy and his basset hound Fred. Even though Fred was considered to be a reject from a class that works with dogs to show them how to detect cancer, he's the best sort of buddy for Tommy, who feels like a bit of a reject himself. After finishing Murder at Redwood Cove, I had a big smile on my face, and I had to see if there was another Kelly Jackson mystery available. There is. Murder at the Mansion, and it features two beagles trained to sniff out bedbugs and termites.

I like dogs with special abilities being featured in the series, but that's not the only reason why I'll be reading the author's books. Janet Finsilver weaves a gorgeous location with an intriguing mystery and a strong cast into a book so enjoyable it puts a smile on my face. Give Murder at Redwood Cove a try. You just might be smiling, too.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for an honest review. This is the first book in a new series by Janet Finsilver and the first book I have read by this author. I am a fan of cozy mysteries so I am always excited when I find a new voice in the genre. This was a great start to the series and I am anticipating the next installments.

Kelly Jackson, the main character, arrives at the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast as the new manager. The last one was, Bob, found dead, so they need to fill the position quickly as the B & B is playng host to a Wine and Choclolate festival. As Kelly begins her job she is assisted by a number of friends of Bob that help her get up and running. However, Kelly begins to believe that Bob's death was due to natural causes as she originally thought so she begins to snoop around and quickly finds herself in danger.

In my opinion this was a strong start to a new series. The setting is perfect for a cozy mystery. The plot is well written and draws the reader along for the ride. But as with most books, the story is made by the well developed characters. In this case, not only is the main character one that the reader will like and root for, but there is a cast of secondary characters that give the plot dimension and completes ths story. And there is a surprise ending that will keep readers coming back to see what Ms. Finsilver has to offer. .

This is an exciting new series that will grab the reader from the very start. Kelly Jackson is an Executive Administrator for Resorts International, and she has been assigned as Interim Manager in Redwood Cove.
Kelly has struggled with jobs in the past, never able to find her niche. She is hoping that her time in Redwood Cove will give her the confidence she needs to be successful.
Kelly is filling in for a much loved member of the community who died suddenly. Everyone loved Bob and a group of people, known as the Silver Sentinels are positive Bob met with foul play. After a series of mysterious events, Kelly thinks the group may be right and she is soon wrapped up in the investigation.
When a young member of the Redwood Cove community is injured, Kelly steps up and takes action, after all, these people are beginning to feel like family.
I was captured by the wonderful style of writing and the authors ability to make me feel like I had stepped inside this story.
I would definitely suggest this book to any cozy mystery reader. I plan to feature this book for my next available book club read.
This is a 5 Star book!

Murder at Redwood Cove by Janet Finsilver is the first in the Kelly Jackson mystery series. Kelly has been sent to Redwood Cove to assume the position of interim manager after the previous manager is found dead at the bottom of a cliff. She quickly meets the Silver Sentinels, a group of older people who try to solve mysteries together. The group believes that Bob's death was murder, and Kelly agrees to keep them informed about any information th at she discovers. Then Kelly is hit over the head by an intruder who is stealing Bob's blackberry and find an envelope with a coded message in the safe with instructions to turn it over to the Silver Sentinels. When the son of one of her employees is also nearly murdered, Kelly is determined to find the murderer and protect him.

An intriguing cast of characters and delightful setting form an excellent backdrop for this mystery. The mystery itself was well written and kept me guessing to the end. I'll definitely be continuing with this series. 4 stars

The characters and story is so fun to read and you will love the Silver Sentinels as much as I do. They will keep you on your toes.
