I was born in Leicester, England, and lived in our cobbler’s shop with my parents and sister. It was an old house and most definitely haunted, but I didn’t find out until I left that my great uncle had hung himself in the living room! But I think our ghost might have been older than that. It was built on the site of the old Roman cemetery, and the land had been constantly inhabited, being in the centre of town. Then, when the council bought the house from us to build a road, my grandfather retired and my father went and worked for the Post Office. My mother was a sample machinist; that is, she worked with designers on the prototypes (models or samples) of garments. So I was very well dressed! We bought a relatively modern house in the country, and my mother was blissfully happy. It’s all very well living in a large old house, but it’s a dreadful task to keep it clean and warm!

My mother's side of the family are Romany gypsies, although sadly we haven't any of the old trailers that are so astonishingly beautiful. I was taught to read the Tarot cards, and I usually use two packs; the Rider pack for simple readings and the Crowley Thoth pack for the complex stuff.
I've always had an interest in the paranormal and it's been a delight to be able to put some of this into my novels.

This story started out engaging enough. Viola is living as the daughter of an estate manager. Julian is the young lord whose family hers serves. They grew up together as children, but eventually had to put an end to their friendship, as society dictated. Now, they are reunited and their childhood affection has been replaced with an adult attraction. That might have been something they could fight or ignore, until dangerous circumstances thrust them together, destroying all but the pretense of propriety.

You see, Viola is actually the hidden daughter of a royal line. It was a secret so closely guarded that neither she nor Julian knew about it. But somehow, the truth of her birth has made it to the wrong hands, making her a target of those who would want her dead –and others who would use her lineage to manipulate themselves into royalty. Julian is determined to make sure neither side will have her. He makes it his mission to get her to safety, even if it means becoming her personal protector.

All of this was fine. There was some ok sexual tension in the beginning, and both characters were generally likeable. But there was so much talk about the Old Pretender and the Young Pretender and these various factions vying for the crown, I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t care what was going on. Perhaps if you like some political wrangling and whatnot in your historical romance, you’ll like it, but it distracted me from the romance.

As for the romance, itself, I liked it well enough at first, but it grew tepid as the story continued. There was plenty of sex, but just not much to really hook me on their feelings. Viola pretty much started out in love with Julian, and despite some very minor concerns about whether their class differences would come between them, there really wasn’t any doubt or obstacle to their HEA.

And I have to mention that some of the language is… eye rolling. From talk of their mingling private hair… to her juices… to unlikely dialogue, frankly there were times I wanted to skim.

The book’s not terrible, but the more I read, the less I wanted to read. Fortunately, just when I was about to put it down, it ended. I don’t think I would read any others from this series.

So Viola thinks to never marry and settles to live as a spinster. But after her father is hurt Marcus tries to help Viola and this takes them on a trip as a married couple.

Viola Gates grew up as the daughter of the estate manager to Lord Malton, Marcus, and has lived a content life in the country, playing and growing up with Marcus and his siblings. She always adored Marcus but knew he was just a dream for her.
When it is discovered that old rumors surrounding Viola’s lineage are actually true, her life and the lives of those she loves are put in danger. She is not just the daughter of a lowly land steward but is actually linked by birth to the Stuart kings and there are many people who wish to do her harm.
When Marcus realizes the threat to Viola, he knows he must keep her safe. She was always his friend, but the thought of her being in danger makes Marcus realize he has always felt more than friendship where Viola is concerned. The best way to keep her safe is to marry her. Together, they can determine who their enemies are and secure their chance at love.
I absolutely loved this book. It is filled with history, intrigue, suspense, humor, and lots of passion. I had previously read Ms. Connolly’s novel Dreaming of Waterloo and knew I had to read more by this amazing author. Her historical knowledge has no end and the way she combines history and passion is spectacular. I am definitely going to go back to the beginning of this series and I am hoping a future book in the series will be about Darius (hint hint to Ms. Connolly :) A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was one of, if not my favorite, entry in the Emperors of London series. Viola is the daughter of the land manager for the Marquess of Strenshall. The Marquess and his son, Marcus, come to the estate to check on her father after he suffers an accident. Viola finds herself remembering the feelings she had for Marcus for years as they grew up together until Marcus turned 9. Viola acts as hostess for the Marquess and after staying overnight, finds that her father was attacked at their home. Marcus springs into action and works to bring Viola to safety. They soon find themselves on the road to London on the public stage as a married couple. Viola has decided she will likely remain a spinster and wants to seize her opportunity to experience passion with Marcus. Proving his status as a gentleman, Marcus preserves Viola's choices but allows her her first taste of passion. Upon reaching London, Marcus and Viola have to decide if their relationship is worth fighting for; Viola's birth is not quite what it appears. A daughter of the Old Pretender and his Italian wife, Viola finds herself and Marcus in danger. Julius makes an appearance and continues to tantalize readers and make me impatient for his book. There was also an interesting development with Alconbury, the heir to the Emperor's worst enemy, the Dankworth family. I loved Marcus as a hero, he is reserved and chivalrous. Viola is more tempestuous, but exactly what Marcus needs to balance him. Connolly does a great job writing an engaging story of childhood friends to lovers with political intrigue thrown in the mix. I'm looking forward to the next title in the series.

Wow! This book has so many interesting facets to it. The ongoing Jacobite struggle has swept the Emperors into many marriages. But, right under their noses is another child of the Pretender. When Viola and her father are attacked, Marcus won't stand for it. No one is going to hurt his childhood friend.

Viola is an interesting character, not least because she is hard to decipher. Traumatic events are handled and put away in a matter of pages. She's tough and determined, but doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about things. She just gets on about the business of getting on, which makes her hard to connect with.

Marcus is not one to be ruffled easily. He's known for his sanguine behavior. Yet Viola can get under his skin and rouse his temper with a look, a word, a simple action in no time. If this is love... No. Marcus does indeed love her. And love her, and love her, and...

In this book two things stand out above all:

1. There are deep divisions among those seeking to restore the Stuarts, divisions marked lightly or only hinted at in previous books, that are stressed strongly here. And the most interesting things are done by the "most evil of persons".

2. Marcus and Viola really like sex. I mean, really, really like sex.

I get it, this is a romance. I'm a fan of romance and read it like a junkie. They aren't abstaining. They are newlyweds. I get all of that. But there needs to feel like there is a balance of plot/dialogue/sex. There isn't. It's more like: run, marry, have sex, visit someone, have sex, go to opera, have sex, have more sex, oblique reference to even more sex, plot with Julius, drag wife into fencing match, have sex, have more sex, more references to yet more sex, set a trap, have sex, spring trap, have sex. I'm trying to figure out how they had time for anything at all. Worse, the plot points in between all the sex are big and important. But if you're skimming the sex scenes, you'll miss some major information because it's kinda stuffed in there between bouts.

I'm a huge fan of this author and this series. Viola and Marcus just didn't do it for me. They lacked the awareness other couples seem to have had about the situation and their safety. Marcus is, of course, suitably "I'm not letting you go anywhere." but it feels more contrived than organic to him and the situation. They were also not the most interesting characters in the book. Despite exceedingly limited page time, Alconbury was hands down the most interesting character.

I liked what I saw at the end, just wanted more meat between Viola and Marcus, and I'm eager to read Veiled in Blue.

Dilemma In Yellow Silk is #5 in "The Emperors of London" series, but can be read as a stand alone. I would suggest reading the series in its entirety. It is an awesome series!
"The Emperors of London ", are a family who are capitivating as well as intriguing, who are determined to make sure the "Pretenter" does not win his bid to retake the thrown of Britain. "The Emperors of London" strive to protect the unsuspecting political pawns (The King's unsupecting true heirs to the throne), keep peace, keep Britain safe from those who are in cohorts for the bid for King, and protect the innocent bystanders. A tall order to be sure, for along the way they not only are in danger of losing their lives but their hearts as well.
In this, the 5th installment, Ms. Connolly, continues her tale of intrigue, danger, the need to protect the innocent, once again secrets, long hidden, will be revealed, and a fight to the end is ensured.
A captivating, highly anticipated, and very interesting story, with twists and turns along the way. She continues her well written, very sensual tale, only in this one, the H/H have known each other for years. In a desperate attempt to keep the heroine safe, the hero must get them, safely, to his family in London. Thus begins their hair-raising, intense escape to London. While, this story was not as dangerous, as the others in the series, it was a bit milder than its counterparts, in the danger department, the intrigue, made up for in abundance. It was more on a personal level between the H/H, and their the unsuspecting secret.
I enjoyed the Heroine's strength, her tenacity to go forward and her desire to succeed. The hero's desire to protect her at all cost, even marriage, and his determination to keep her safe to the end, recommend him as a strong and steady hero. Together, they make an excellent team!
Be aware...there are intense, steamy sensual scenes. Just, in case, that isn't your cup of tea...
Once again, Ms. Connolly has provided the reader with an excellent choice of reading material. One in which, there is excitement, intrigue, secrets, passion, a bit of humor, inner turmoil, the strength of a family and the power of love. A Georgian Historical Romance, that is exciting and adventurous. Do remember, while this story, does NOT, have a any cliffhangers, it does leave the question of who is attempting to find and eliminate the true heirs to the thrown, the "Old Pretenter" or his enemy, the "Young Pretenter". The battle between the Dantworths and the Northwichs continues. I can't wait to read the next installment! An enjoyable and satisfying read! One not to be missed. Fans of the Georgian era, Historical intrigue, adventure, passion, and romance will enjoy this story. A great read!

Dilemma in Yellow Silk is the 5th book in the Emperors of London series by Lynne Connolly. I haven't read any of the previous books and can say that this book can easily be read as a stand alone one.

The story revolves around Viola Gates. She is known as the daughter of of the land steward for Lord Malton, Marcus Aurelius. She and Marcus were great friends when they were growing up, but when he was just 9 years old, Marcus' father sent him away, one of the reasons for that being that he wanted to keep them apart. Already at that age Viola knew she loved Marcus, and he also had feelings for her. Being too lower class for Marcus, his father knew he had to keep them apart. She rarely saw him after that, and when she did he seemed too aristocratic and very cold towards her.

Marcus' father like most people didn't know the truth of the matter, he was keeping Marcus from Viola thinking she was beneath him, when in actual fact she is his superior because she is the daughter of the Stuart King..one of a number of children born to him in secret. Viola knows the rumours that she could be related to royalty, but she never for one minute believes them to be true.

When an attack takes place on her home and her father is injured, he realises that the truth has become known to one of both parties that would want Viola dead, or forced to marry. Knowing this, he has no choice but to tell her the truth of her royal connections, and enlists Marcus' help in getting her away to safety.

There begins a fabulous story where we see how Marcus and his friends and family who rally to help, try to keep Viola safe. The one particular enemy who would want to kidnap and force her to marry him is thwarted when Marcus marries Viola. What is supposed to be a marriage of convenience is so much more for both of them if only they could admit their feelings to each other. Viola has never stopped loving Marcus, and even knowing his feelings aren't reciprocated, she is still thrilled to be married to him. Will she stay alive long enough for their marriage to become a real one, will Marcus be able to stop her enemies in their tracks.

I absolutely loved this story, Marcus was the ultimate hero, willing to put his life on the line for Viola. He was also an ardent lover and there are a few very passionate sex scenes between him and Viola which are rather more 'saucy' than your usual historical romance bedroom scenes. Don't worry, there's nothing kinky or debauched. There was a nice balance of danger in the real world, and total freedom in the bedroom where they could both forget their worries for the time being, and it made for a great read. I will definitely be reading the other books in this series and anything else that this author has written because I have just added her to my very long list of favourite authors!

WARNING: This novel contains several scenes of a sexual nature and I would not recommend this novel to anyone under the age of 18 for this reason. If those scenes are not your cup of tea, it is just as easy to skip over them without feeling like you've lost anything.

I feel like I should begin my review by saying two things right off the bat. One - this is pretty much a stand-alone novel. What I mean by "pretty much" is that while this is the first in this series that I have personally read, I didn't feel like I was lost or not understanding the back-story. However, at the end it feels like there is an element of the story that has not been completely resolved and therefore can be used to continue this story in the next installment.

The second thing I want to get out is that while I am not a prude by any means, and I enjoy a good sex scene as much as the next person, there comes a point when those types of scenes become too repetitive and not only take away some of the enjoyment of the overall story, but also cause me to skip those scenes altogether - and unfortunately this story crossed that point.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way - allow me to now move on to my thoughts on this story.

There was a lot in this novel that I enjoyed, the characters had a history together (they were friends during their childhood years until his parents pulled them apart) and while on the outside they couldn't have been more different (or so it seemed) they shared a special affection for each other that was easy to see throughout this story. I also enjoyed the elements of danger that were ever present throughout this novel. You could never tell from what side the danger would come from and that made the suspense portion of this story more enjoyable than I was expecting.

For a female who has had their entire world turned upside down, I felt Viola performed extraordinarily well under stress. It takes a lot of courage (and not to mention a backbone of steel) to not only be told that everything you thought about your life was a lie, and that your very life is in danger, but to also lose one's father and gain a husband within a matter of days. I felt that she was portrayed as someone who was not only a strong lead, but someone in whom the reader could believe in and root for. I am curious to see how the rest of the series plays out.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a good historical romance novel.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

Previously reviewed on The Good, The Bad, and The Unread:

I’m loving my regular encounters with the Emperors of London and their various friends and relations – not to mention their enemies. So far they’ve never failed to deliver on adventure and intrigue, and, obviously, romance. I’m particularly enamoured of the glimpses we also get of differing strands of society (often with a definite small ‘s’) and how they relate and react to those in the higher echelons of Society (definitely with a capital ‘S’). This book is no exception, opening as it does with great excitement at Haxby Hall, as the servants clean the rooms and generally prepare for the return of the Marquess of Strenshall and his family.

Helping them is Viola, daughter of the Marquess’ land steward, and a very distant cousin to the family. Of a similar age to the Marquess’ children, she falls between two levels of society – equally at home working in the Hall and on the estate, or taking music lessons and playing hostess with the younger members of the family when they’re in residence at the Hall. Her particular favourite out of the latter group has always been Marcus Aurelius, Earl of Malton, the Marquess’ heir, even though he seems to have grown more distant from her as his responsibilities in Town and on the estate have increased.

Marcus’ return to Haxby this time, however, is complicated by the revelation that the recent fall from a horse in which Viola’s father broke his ankle was no accident. He and the Marquess have been guarding papers that prove Viola’s true birth – and her legacy as one of the legitimate daughters of James Stuart, the Old Pretender, and his first wife. But now enemies of the Emperors – and of the Crown – are attempting to steal the papers, as well as planning to kidnap Viola in order to marry her off to one of their supporters.

Viola and Marcus flee to another family property, but their enemies seem to be everywhere – ahead and behind – and they are forced to disguise themselves and travel to London by stage coach. Naturally, I love all the historical details we got surrounding their journey and fellow passengers. The drama continues in London as Marcus and Viola make plans to marry in order to assure her safety. Their union is both passionate and tempestuous, with the interesting ways they find for resolving their differences making great gossip for the scandal sheets.

This is most definitely my favourite out of the series so far, although I believe the next will be Julius’ story and I’ve been looking forward to that one for a long time.

And it's the fifth book in Lynne Connolly's historical romance series, The Emperors of London! This can definitely be read as a standalone, but if you want the juicy behind the scene information of what has been found and collected, since it is a somewhat mystery ongoing series with action and call for danger, then do read the first books but then of course you absolutely don't have to for this book.

If you know me, I absolutely adore childhood friends to lovers stories and this is one of them that has a touch of something different and sweet. Both the hero and heroine has known each other their whole lives but there's a secret that no one knows about, her birth is tied to the treacherous Jacobites. The only reason why Marcus was sent away in the first place because she could endanger his life, or that she's royalty. Of course it turned the other way when she's attacked and he takes charge to bring her to safety.

I loved that this book was packed with lots of information and action. There are lots of charters that you'll meet along the way, some old and familiar if you've been catching up with the series from the beginning but also new characters waiting for their own adventure.

Marcus is definitely a true hero in every sense. He's strong and have a heart of a protector, especially when it comes to protecting those he love. Viola was also amazing and is surprisingly level headed under stress and tension, most of the time, which was great because I wouldn't want a dysfunctional heroine being dragged about England over the turn of events to her life.

I adore tension in romances and super love them even more between friends to lovers stories because you just can't help but want them to just get it rolling after all those times. I thought they were great together, although it start to get repetitive (the sex scenes), I still enjoyed it.

As many of the books before this one, there's this loose end to the story. Though Marcus and Viola's romance ended and just beginning, the mystery over the whole series is still ongoing into the next book, with added new information of course.

Lynne Connolly is amazing and her writing just grabs you so I do recommend this story and really, any of her stories. She also does paranormal you know.

** I received an eARC of this book in return for my honest review **

This was my first book by Lynne Connolly and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This book was book 5 in the "The Emperors of London" series. Now, I have to go back and read the first four because I really enjoyed the characters from those books who were also included in this one.

I really liked all of the characters. None of them started out as jerks and got their HEA through their redemption. They were all likeable from the beginning and the point of the book was two childhood friends finding each other and creating their HEA while protecting the heroine from some really nasty characters.

Marcus Aurelius, named after an emperor as all of the Emperors of London are, is the heir to a Marquesate. He and Viola Gates were were friends -- until Marcus was 9 and his family started pulling him away from her because she was the estate manager's daughter and they were getting to close to each other. He watched her from afar though.

Viola Gates had always loved Marcus -- and when he kissed her, she was lost. There is a mystery about Viola and her birth and that is what has to be solved -- and what she needs protection from.

The writing is excellent, the potential evil doers are many and the HEA is great. I hope you'll try this book.

Book 5 in the series . Taking place during the Jacobite and the young pretender . Book 5 in the series .
This is a story that Lynne uses great information . Lynne uses history that is accurate for the time . But Lynne uses her imagination to draw you into the story . This story is about Viola and Marcus . Marcus is an Earl , heir to a Marquess .
Viola and Marcus have known each other since they were young around 8 years old . Viola has loved Marcus since that time .
Marcus has spent his time in London once he gets back to his estate Marcus and Viola has a smoking hot kiss. Marcus is shaken by it . He lashes out and blames Viola .
A few days later Marcus learns from his father and Viola father that Viola actual father is King Charles. Marcus is schocked beyond schocked .
Viola has heard the stories but she thought that they were just that stories .
There is people after Viola . The people after her have attacked her home on the estate . Marcus wants to keep Viola safe. Marcus suggests
That they marry and leave the Easter and go to London . There are 2 groups after Viola .
Grab it and find out who . And does Marcus marry Viola .

This is the second book in the Emperors of London series that I've read. Dilemma in Yellow Silk was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Viola Gates has loved Marcus since she was a child, but it wasn't until years later when Viola's father is attacked that Marcus and Viola are thrown together. Viola is in danger and Marcus vows to keep her safe.

Ms. Connolly does a good job of fleshing out the characters of Viola and Marcus. I loved that Viola is a strong and independent woman although she does let Marcus take charge when they are on the run. The story moves along at a good pace with a few twists and turns thrown in to keep the story interesting. Be warned, however, that there are quite a few sex scenes in this book. Who knew that regency men had such strong sex drives? All in all, this was an enjoyable read. Recommended.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Book five, Dilemma In Yellow Silk by Lynne Connolly, is as fresh and captivating as the first book in this author's Emperors of London series. The continued intrigue of the Pretender and his on going bid to retake the thrown of Britain plays out as the Emperors of London strive to keep peace and protect unsuspecting political pawns. A hero who maintains a dutiful stance to his responsibilities and a heroine with an unbreakable spirit take on numerous challenges in order to claim their love. With her ability to drawn readers in with her facile writing and fathomless research Lynne Connolly is a historical romance fan's dream come true. Wonderful connections and no short supply of plot twist make delving into a Ms. Connolly work a special event for the story lover in all of us.

Despite her cover as the daughter of the land steward for Lord Malton, Marcus Aurelius, spirited Viola Gates is tied by birth to the treacherous Jacobite legacy. Not that this keeps her from falling for the dashing Lord from afar. Despite his staid demeanor, Marcus is devastatingly handsome—and hopelessly beyond her reach. Then Viola’s father is mortally wounded and her secret identity revealed, sending her straight into danger’s path—and Marcus’s arms…

For years, he’d only known her as a wild child, the tempting—and forbidden—daughter of his trusted steward. But when Viola’s life is threatened, Marcus must act as duty—and his barely contained passion—dictates. Unlike the previous books in the series this one was an easy and quick read for me. I would have liked to see more romance between the two main characters because I felt that it was lacking on that area. I am getting tired of seeing one of the emperors falling in love with a child of the Jacobite king. It feels as if the story repeats itself and I don't think that any reader would like a repeating plot for the a series to read. People always seem to discover that are children of that king and always run from the same person while falling in love with the emperor who is protecting them. Hopefully the author will find something else to write about in the next book. A little angst will be a nice touch since so far is missing from the stories.

Recd this book free for an honest review. Enjoyed this story very much initially, then both H/h seemed to become somewhat whiny and shrewish in the middle, though they found their way back to the HEA in the end. The story stands alone, though it seems to be part of a series, which may explain why some characters don't feel fully fleshed out, or perhaps were edited. There is a lot of passion between the H/h.

This is book 5 in the "The Emperors of London" Series and my first book by Lynne Connolly. I really enjoyed it. It was a very entertaining read.
Viola Gates have been in love with Marcus since they were both very young. There are a lot of twists and turns and the romance between them is very nice. The historical aspects are accurate and make the read more interesting.

I received a copy by the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.

I liked how honest Marcus could be, "he burned. He flicked his gaze over her. “I want you, Viola,” he said baldly. “I can’t think of a better way to say it. I am at the edge of my control. You are lovely, intelligent, utterly desirable.” I liked this I loved Marcus he could be so patient but he was so passionate as well.

Thank you for the humour and almost complete lack of editing.

It is my second book in this series, I will probably read them all, but it is the blurb appealing me the most which will decide of the order I will select them.
The author was able to create one more new very interesting duet of characters.
Each one with its strength and its flaws, with strong personalities enhanced and counterbalanced by another.
Violet is a lost daughter of an exiled king, but she was raised far from a royal court, she thought her parentage a tale, believing she is the daughter of a steward. Until her life is threatened and she must run to save herself with her long time crush.
Marcus is a man who always followed the rules, he is never
carried away, until he is around Violet. They were friends as kids but their parents chose a different path for each of them. As a heir, Marcus must not play with the daughter of a land stewart, even if he is a cousin. But when Violet’s life becomes at stake, he must follow his impulse and make a choice, a choice which could be devastating.
I loved there was few angst, only moments of miscommunication but they are smart enough to overcome them and talk about their feeling even if they do not spell immediately the big word with a capital L.
It is also nice to see again the characters from the previous books. It is like seeing again old friends.
I can only recommend this awesome series.
