3.5 stars
Tattered Loyalties was my first Carrie Ann Ryan's book and I must say, I quite enjoyed it. Before I say anything else, this book is free on amazon so if you like a good deal, check it out!
This series is a sequel to the Redwood Pack series which I have not read but I wasn't at all confused, you do not need to read the previous series before reading this one. Tattered Loyalties started out amazing, I loved the introduction to this world and the characters. It had everything I love in a shifter book, a powerful, stubborn alpha werewolf, a submissive but strong female lead, both from a different pack, an unexpected mating, a ton of sexy times and a little tension to make it all interesting.
I'd have given this book a solid five stars if it weren't for that ending. Like I said, I loved the first half of the story, the way the characters were introduced to each other, how the pack was depicted... Carrie's writing style is very smooth and it felt like she wrote this book specifically for me, but the ending was so tremendously underwhelming that it left me completely disappointed.
This is not a long book so I knew problems were going to be resolved quickly but it was done in a way that almost felt sloppy which wasn't like the rest of the book at all. I did, however, really enjoyed most of the story, the romance part was nicely done, a little sappy but honestly in this type of stories, it doesn't bother me as much. Both characters were very interesting in their own way and I loved the contrast between Gideon and Brie.
I like werewolves books because I love the idea of having a pack. Something stronger than family, bigger and better. I've always loved that part of the books and I think Carrie Ann Ryan did a fantastic job with that aspect of the story. She introduced a few pack members, mostly Gideon's family and I'm really excited to read each of their story.
So, while the ending wasn't what I expected and wanted, the rest of the book was and I definitely recommend Tattered Loyalties if you're a fan of this kind of story.
