“The perfect give for all fathers looking to up their cooking game!” — The Daily Meal
There is a new kind of dad, and he’s doing far more domestic duty than at any time in history, including cooking. Although it’s written with a sense of humor, this book is a serious resource for dads and anyone else interested in upping their game to make great tasting food at home, even if they have never used a chef’s knife or a roasting pan before.
Although the author graduated from cooking school, he asserts that he's not a fancy guy and that "good cooking doesn't have to be complicated to be great." He seeks to make cooking streamlined and fun. "So whether you’re clueless in the kitchen, pan-fry phobic, or already a skilled cook, Short Order Dad is here to help."
The author also has a background in comedy, and throws his comedy into his book. He likes to talk about sex and "sexy" food a lot. If you couldn't tell from the title, this book is geared towards men, and the author likes to talk about "us guys" often. The introduction even has the author's common reasons why men don't cook, and a list of reasons why they should.
Here are the names of the chapters:
1. Never waste a meal 2. How to build a pantry 3. Recipes for disaster (or what not to do) 4. Let's talk technique: 10 fundamentals 5. The thing about recipes (and how to look at them) 6. Wake up, it's a beautiful morning 7. Apps and snacks (good for the kids or great on a date) 8. Red meat, pig, and poultry (it's all good in small doses) 9. Adventures in seafood 10. Superbowls--noodles, soups, and salads 11. A little something on the side 12. Go-to sauces and dressings 13. The sweet stuff 14. Cocktails (wheel greasers)
Each recipe has a color picture, a brief introduction, and streamlined, easy-to-read ingredients and instructions. Often recipes include short notes or tips. Some recipes are labeled "intuitive" and are recipes the author recommends using your intuition to make substitutions and use whatever ingredients you have on hand.
I would recommend this cookbook to those who are looking to get into cooking but are maybe intimidated by it and need a humorous and easy introduction with practical recipes and no frills. (Several recipes only have two to five ingredients!) It is also useful for those who want guidance using what they have on hand, such as pancake batter, flour tortillas, canned beans, canned refrigerated crescent roll dough, etc. This is NOT a cookbook for those who don't care for the author's particular brand of "macho" humor, those who want more complicated or advanced recipes, or those who prefer to make each part of a recipe by scratch.
Short Order Dad: One Guy?s Guide to Making Food Fun and Hassle-Free by Robert Rosenthal Dedication and praise for authors works. TOC where recipes are listed as meals and food categories. Quote and acknowledgements start this book off. Intro talks about author's philosophy about why men don't cook. Benefits of cooking are discussed, what to put in your pantry, technique of fundamentals, chart for cooking temperatures for meat and poultry, lots of quotes throughout the book, cooking terms of how to prepare foods is discussed.. Recipes start with an index of what's included for recipes. Summary of the section is attached. Each recipe starts with a colorful full page picture, title, summary of the dish, servings, list of ingredients and suggestions along with instructions on how to make There is NO nutritional information. This book to me is a bit over the top, things you don't really need to worry about, use utensils you have, don't overdo it. Very fancy names of dishes, something i'd serve to company, not family as it takes time to do the right presentations. Lots of fancy french names and English ones if available. Recipes near the back of the book do not have color photos. Index is included.
Not just a collection of ho-hum, swiped from the internet recipes. Author presents an original and "real" cookbook. Upside down pancakes ( or whatever he calls them) is a favorite at my table and in my permanent recipe collection.
I received Short Order Dad in a bundle with several other cookbooks and it did take me quite a while to actually read it. The cookbook just didn't seem overly interesting, and I wasn't drawn to it as much as the others in the bundle. Eventually, I decided to check out Short Order Dad in hopes of finding something new and delicious to cook for the family table. Once I opened the cookbook I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the photographs and the delicious recipes. Most of the recipes are quick and easy, with basic ideas and easy to acquire ingredients. The cookbook itself consists of fascinating information packed with hilarious jokes and stories. It truly is a great read and a must-have for any man looking to cook. There is plenty of encouragement hidden within the pages to help a man gain confidence in the realm of cooking, which I can completely appreciate.
