A follow-up to Sherlock Holmes and the Vampires of London.

The year is 1876 and a brilliant young virtuoso violinist is kidnapped. He is not the first one to get taken without a demand of ransom. Several people in England's intellectual and scientific society's have disappeared. But this young man is a friend of Sherlock Holmes and Holmes will not stop at anything to find what had happened to him and the rest of the people that has been taken.

I read Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon, another follow-up to Sherlock Holmes and the Vampires of London a little while ago and found that one quite good. I love the mix of paranormal and historical mystery. And, I love a graphic novel with really good artwork. Luckily this one just as the Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon have both a good story and the artwork is marvelous.

This volume lacked the paranormal angle that I so loved with Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon. Sure the explanation to what happened to the missing men, why just they were taken was interesting. And, despite the lack of paranormality was the story good. One can see how this story came to form the Sherlock Holmes that we met years later.

This volume also introduced Sherlock to Moriarty. I was a bit confused about that at first as they knew each other in Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon. But, after some research did I discover that this story takes place seventeen years before Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon. One thing that is interesting is that it is explained in this story how Moriarty came to met his servant that is in Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon.

I'm always interested to read a good Sherlock Holmes story, regardless if it is a graphic novel or a book and I find this series by Sylvain Cordurié is really good. The art is superb and the stories so far feel very interesting and original. I have yet to read Sherlock Holmes and the Vampires of London, but I hope to do so one day.

I want to thank the publisher that provided me through Edelweiss with a free copy for an honest review.

Victorian London was a cesspool of stink, a miasma of muck, a turgid toilet of truculent turds. For the modern human (or inhuman, even), visiting it in comfort would require the removal of olfactory senses or some industrial-grade nose plugs and shoe covers.

Nespolino Alessandro’s Victorian London, however, is not a smelly place. It’s an idealized, intricately detailed world of cobblestone streets, petticoats, and scone makers rubbing elbows with booksellers. It’s gorgeous. Half the time while I was reading this, I got distracted looking at the backgrounds, with a little voice in the back of my head saying, Liz Lemon-style, “I want to go to there!”

The story itself is an interesting take on Sherlock’s early, pre-Watson days, with a younger James Moriarity (grudgingly) in a position of subservience to his powerful father. Look, I know that there are some out there who insist that reading non-canonical Sherlock is literary blasphemy, but, hey, I was never baptized, so I’m down with the heathens. Doyle’s work, as lovely as it is, is finite—given that he is, you know, dead and all, and as far as I’m aware, has not attained lich status, which might enable him to continue his work—so, to get more Holmes, you gotta go outside the canon. This is a fun foray in that direction—I’m not quite sure I buy Sherlock’s characterization (in particular his emotional response to a certain traumatic event), but taken as an origin story, well, it’s at least plausible. It’s a little Sherlock: Year One. So, just enjoy it for what it is.

Ultimately, though, it’s the artwork that makes this one sing—I want to see more Victorian-set stuff from this Alessandro cat. Hmmm…graphic novel version of The Camelot Shadow, anyone?

I literally loved it. The only thing I really missed was Watson's character. Sorry– but I truly love him and this is like Don Quijote and Sancho Panza. If there's a Sherlock, there must be a Watson, personally. But apart from that, everything was genuinely written, very astounding and absolutely incredible.

I haven't studied Art/Painting (not very profoundly), but those images though, I can tell– so good! so realistic! so well done! :)

If you're a Sherlockian, you may have some expectations (some obvious ones), but here's my advice: don't try to look for anything other than enjoying and getting yourself entertained. I guarantee you, you'll like it. Lots of different scenarios and characters, thrilling moments,– This Sherlock you'll meet, differs from the ones we've met (Sherlock TV series, last Sherlock movie, original Sherlock), this one is more of a charismatic one and "more human". I cannot deny I expected to find the Sherlock's character from the TV series or either the one created by ArthurConanDoyle.

All in all, I liked it very much. The story, you'll see, makes you jump somehow and it has some plot twists which are unexpectedly well done.

The only thing left to say here is: give it a try! you'll be certainly entertained and amused!

Recomendable.

I've read the previous two books by Cordrié which have been translated into English and was excited to read this one. It was surprising then to find "Crime Alleys" doesn't take place in the same paranormal world as the other two. This book features a young Sherlock Holmes, the "budding detective". We find him flatmates with a virtuoso violinist and the two of them are buddies with a Scotland Yard detective named Colin Pike. Notice the disappointing absence of Holmes' famous colleagues. Holmes and Pike get involved in the case when Ron, the violinist, is the next man in a string of elitists who have been kidnapped and declared missing over the last few months. Here Sherlock also meets for the first time the Moriarty family, a young James, but more importantly, the patriarch, his father, Henry. The story isn't paranormal like the first two graphics but it is a little out of this world featuring a mad scientist-type plot with a contraption more science-fiction than realistic and a leader called "Most High Lord" who can't be human with his all over body hair and claws. A decent enough story, though a little off the grid, and not what I was expecting.

This functions as a prequel of sorts, with a Holmes that's even more arrogant and condesending than usual, but one who isn't quite as good as he thinks he is yet. He rooms with a young violinist (no Watson) and has a budding relationship with Scotland Yard. On the villain ledger we get a mysterious figure that resembles Mr. Hyde backing Mr. Moriarty and his son, James. Not a terrible story, but not exactly what I look for in a Holmes yarn.

It's not really a mystery... there's no Holmesian logic to figure out impossible clues, Holmes is really more an action hero (and a poor one) that a detective. The real hero of the story is a former thug that turns prize witness. Another example where shoehorning a decent story into an established property hurts the story more than it helps.

Sherlock Holmes by Sylvain Cordurié: Sherlock Holmes Crime Alleys

This is my first time reading a Sherlock Holmes book!

I hope to read the stories written by the original author himself as well. I love the art of this book. It's a real graphic novel type. Now, about the story, I really thought Holmes can save his poor friend. I'm sad that he lost his two friends. I admire his intelligence. It's crazy how what happened in this book may really be happening in real life. We just hope that it's not. I hope to read more Sherlock Holmes stories after this!

Meh.

I enjoyed this book. Sherlock Holmes on his own trying to find a killer in London. It is almost like a beginning of the detective's career. It is a fast and fun read.

Great illustrations!

Eh wasn't feeling it. I prefer the ones where he actually solves crimes and then he would explain in the most simplest ways on how he came to solve it. This one just didn't do it for me.

A new look at a budding Sherlock Holmes as he sets out to find his kidnapped violinist friend. Some of the stories were a bit odd, as were some of the character choices. Though this was the one most based in reality-ish and closest to who Sherlock Holmes is. The artwork is pretty amazing though.

“Sherlock Holmes: Crime Alleys (2016)”

Clever continuation of the Sherlock trademark
- - -

“Maybe you read your report in the library, you've been spending all your days there … so much so that visitors sometimes ask YOU questions instead of the staff.” - Ron to Sherlock (p19)

“And you? If you stay on the streets, you'll be dead sooner or later! There is only one efficient way to protect yourself: surrender [to Scotland Yard] and talk!” - Sherlock
“Because you think Scotland Yard will save my ass?
Henry will do me in wherever I go! And talking to the cops is not my thing!” - Tyron
“The sacrosanct law of silence … Moriarty [crime lord] can sleep tight. People like you are his best defense.” - Sherlock. (p75-76)

“The human mind is a fragile thing.
Under an emotional shock, it loses itself. All sense of time disappears, the agitation of others ceases to matter.
Even one's aversion to a hated enemy is covered up, anesthetized.
Nothing exists but the reality one doesn't want to believe it …
despite knowing that it will eventually take form.
The mind denies all this, to avoid suffering.
It denies hat it's senses are telling it...
the shouts of policemen …
the people all around …
and, finally the mind accepts it.” (p94-95)

One of the saddest non original stories of Sherlock Holmes I have ever read. Good plot and illustrations, looking forward to read others.

THANKS TO EDELWEISS AND DARK HORSE BOOKS FOR THE PREVIEW!
