Brendan Waddell needs a place to recuperate. Lauren Everman needs a place to hide. It's going to be an unexpectedly romantic Christmas at Bluebird Ranch.
Brendan Waddell has always considered Bluebird Ranch a little piece of heaven: an idyllic ranch that pairs abused children with abused horses, run by one of his old Marine buddies. Now, recovering from an on-the-job injury, Brendan thinks the ranch is the perfect place to spend Christmas healing up.
When Lauren Everman was a seventeen-year-old foster kid, Bluebird Ranch was the safest place she knew. Now it's the perfect hideout for a woman on the run. As the witness to a murder, Lauren needs somewhere to lie low, and her skill with horses means she'll be able to lend a hand with the troubled kids at Bluebird—without answering too many questions.
Lauren's rich hair, high cheekbones, and dark eyes immediately get Brendan's attention—but so does her secretive behavior. This Special Ops Intel man knows a woman on the run when he sees one, and he's not about to let her put Bluebird Ranch at risk.
But as Brendan and Lauren get to know each other, their suspicions evaporate and romance starts to sizzle. But this would-be couple has more to worry about than each other—there's a killer on the loose who wants Lauren kept quiet.
All Is Bright
A romantic, Christmas wedding at her seaside hotel gives Delilah a chance to shine with her unique gifts. But will her light be snuffed out before the bride and groom say “I do”?
As manager of the Tidewater Inn, Delilah Carter has been planning a spectacular Christmas wedding for her friends at the grand hotel overlooking the ocean. While picking up still more twinkly lights and some last-minute groceries for the reception dinner, a huge truck runs her off the freezing, wet roads into the dark night. Her car stops just short of an enormous tree and the truck speeds off into the night. Delilah escapes with her life and has almost convinced herself the whole thing was an accident, but then she begins to receive threatening phone calls. With the wedding just hours away, she's distracted and anxious. Then Sheriff Tom Bourne stops by the inn and volunteers to help.
Tom has always had a soft spot for Delilah, and he's determined to protect her. But he is pulled away by a bizarre Christmas stunt that has the neighborhood reeling, and Delilah is attacked again.
Will Delilah have to cancel the Christmas wedding at Tidewater Inn? And will Tom's protection be enough to save Delilah from the shadowy figure looming in the background?
USAToday bestselling author Colleen Coble lives with her husband, Dave, in Arizona. She is the author of dozens of novels including the Rock Harbor Series, the Aloha Reef Series, the Mercy Falls Series, the Hope Beach Series, the Lonestar Series and two Women of Faith fiction selections, Alaska Twilight and Midnight Sea. She has more than 6 million books in print.
I liked this overall but wish it was a bit more christmas-y.
The first one, All is Calm was probably my favorite and most engaging one. In that one, we have Brendan and Lauren. We are at Bluebird Ranch, a place Brendan always considered a little piece of heaven. They have a ranch that pairs children with horses, run by one of his old Marine friends. He is recovering from a job injury and is back at the ranch to spend Christmas healing. Lauren was a 17 year old foster kid when she was at Bluebird Ranch years ago and it was the safest place she knew. Now she is on the run from a murder investigation where she was a witness - she takes her horse (who was going to be put down falsely accused) and runs to the ranch where she feels safe. She meets Brendan and he is very suspicious of her actions and past. Romance blooms when they start working together and the rest is history.
I liked this first one because of the family ranch vibes it gave with a little girl, horses and a bit of mystery. Romance was too instalove for me but I liked the characters and the narrator was good. Would recommend because it does end with Christmas time that I liked.
For the second novella, All is Bright, we have Delilah who is a manager of Tidewater Inn. She has been planning a Christmas wedding for her friends at the grand hotel overlooking the ocean. A truck runs her off the road one night and she barely escapes death. Then she starts getting threatening phone calls and Sheriff Tom stops by the inn and volunteers to help. Tom has always had a soft spot for Delilah and wants to protect her but things get crazy and they get separated.
I enjoyed this one too, while not as much as the first one, it had a solid suspense element. I just wanted to more Christmas vibes here.
Overall, would recommend if you want a quick audiobook listen for christmas romantic suspense.
All Is Calm, All Is Bright was a fun introduction into Colleen Coble’s writing. I’m not one to pick up mystery/drama books so quickly, but these two short stories were a perfect taste into this genre I don’t quite often indulge in. Coupled with the fact that it had a bit of holiday essence in the novel, I have to say this novella is a perfect escape for the winter season.
All Is Calm introduces us to Lauren Everman who flees to Bluebird Ranch in order to save a beloved animal and escape the charges she’s facing for attempted murder. She fell in love with Bluebird Ranch when she was a seventeen year old foster kid, so she hopes to return to find some solace. Brendan Waddell is staying at the ranch while he recovers from an injury that’s keeping him from his military duties, which he hopes to return to soon. When Lauren and Brendan meet at the ranch, they quickly develop a romance that neither expected, and together they work to clear Lauren’s name and bring a little holiday cheer to the foster kids at Bluebird Ranch.
All Is Bright takes us to Tidewater Inn where Delilah Carter is helping her friend plan a Christmas wedding. During a quick run into town, she’s driven off the road by a mysterious man and that’s when Sherriff Tom Bourne becomes involved in the investigation. Tom has always cared for Delilah, so he’s determined to keep her safe and get to the bottom of the attacks. As Delilah and Tom spend time together, they begin to fall in love, which makes for the perfect holiday romance!
Overall, All Is Calm, All Is Bright offers a little mystery, a dash of romance and a sprinkle of Christmas cheer... Two short stories based on existing series I haven't read but will now add to my TBR. Colleen Coble is a new-to-me author that grabbed my attention with her holiday novellas. Can't wait to try more by this author!
Just a friendly reviewer's note: I'm only going to review All is Bright because that's the one I happily discovered in my library's Libby audio collection. They've since added All Is Calm, but I'm fifth on the waiting list so it'll be a bit of a wait. Mind you, with each novella only lasting two hours I'm hoping it will be sooner than later.
All Is Bright
I love the Hope Beach series so I was excited to meet up with so many of its heroes and heroines while desperately keeping an eye on Delilah and her welfare, of course. It might feel a bit overwhelming for readers who haven't met all these characters, but Coble is really good at keeping the focus on Delilah and Tom and a few other central characters so I think you could read this as a standalone.
It's packed with Coble-esque fast-paced suspense and edge-of-your-seat danger. I'm amazed that the author managed to deliver so much in such a limited page count, but this definitely has the satisfying feel of her longer novels. It helps that Delilah and Tom have been friends for ages, both with the secret desire for something more which blossoms beautifully in this holiday treat of a romance....once they get that pesky stalker thing dealt with. :-)
Two enjoyable novels connected to two of Colleen's series. They were the perfect length to read both in one sitting. I think I do prefer her full novels, simply because the mystery and the characters are more fleshed out than can be done in a novella.
Thus far, I've found myself very enamored of Colleen's stories set along the coast of Maine, which is where the second novella is set. She creates a place that is very atmospheric and well-done. Though I haven't read any of her series set on Bluebird Ranch, I am really intrigued by a ranch that provides refuge for traumatized children as a backdrop for those stories.
Novellas can be a hit or miss with me, but I ended up liking these. Though I prefer her full length novels, I was happy to read these short and sweet stories.
This was a Christmas Romance novella. Two different stories....both very short. Novellas are usually a miss with me and this wasn't an exception. First, I liked the mystery in both of these stories. Really....both felt like they had a solid premise. But everything else was a miss. Here are only a few of the things that didn't work for me. Mostly, I missed reality or even some anchor to reality. The dialogue could have used some of that too.
My biggest dislike was that the women were acted upon. That isn't really a surprise for this genre but it was too much for my tastes. They didn't make decisions or alter their journey....they were simply tools for the villain and gag, they were tools for the love interest, who could just take what he wanted. This felt more like "fantasy" to me. Ultimately, this wasn't for me. I'll add an extra star for the touch of mystery....so 2 stars.
I’ve been wanting to try something by this author for a while, so I picked this up at a church library.
All Is Calm (two stars) I loved the premise of a dude ranch ministering to children in the foster care system. The way Lauren was helped there in her past and able to help Carly was really special. My favorite part was probably when Lauren and Brendan shopped for Christmas gifts for the kids. That was pretty special. ;)
Unfortunately, this wasn’t really my type of book. The mystery was exciting, but the villain stacked murders like a bargain hunter stacks coupons. Add in arson, drugging, and kidnapping. More intense than I like reading. ;) One of the side characters was definitely a player, as well.
The thing that most took away from my enjoyment, though, was the romance. After two days (correct me if I’m wrong, please) of being acquainted, the main characters were kissing passionately. I understand that this is a novella so things did have to move quickly, but that was a wee bit too quick for me. ;) Also, it happened so frequently and was described so much it ended up not feeling very special anymore…?
All Is Bright (three stars) This was my favorite between the two. ;) Delilah is so much like me--it was great! Trying to help everyone whether or not it’s humanly possible? Yup! I liked all the details of her planning a friend’s wedding, and the Christmastime setting made it even more special. I actually really liked the romance between Delilah and Tom. It was super sweet. <3 Also, the whole gifting-someone-a-book-that-reminds-you-of-them thing? Seriously epic! *begins to plot what to get people for Christmas*
So, the premise of this book, though… It was a little too real. Almost drowning in a car (twice) and being trapped in a fire… *shudders* All well described and super scary.
Bring nail clippers with you wherever you go.
Just a note, in the epilogue there are descriptions of .
Altogether, this was an interesting experiment and a nice touch of Christmas in summer, but not something I would like to reread. ;)
A special thank you to Thomas Nelson-Fiction and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Talented storyteller, Colleen Coble delivers two delightful Christmas holiday novellas in one charming book, All is Calm (Lonestar Series) and All is Bright(Hope Beach Series) —packaged with a beautiful holiday cover, to add some spice to your holidays. For fans of both intriguing mystery, and romantic suspense--with holiday settings.
I tend to pick a few Christmas books for the holiday-- with a mix of mystery, romantic suspense, and thrillers, to get you in the mood for the upcoming season. I read the novella back in October; however, with holiday books, I typically wait and post my reviews in December, to keep them fresh in reader’s minds as we approach the season.
All is Bright
As a big Colleen Coble fan, I have read all the books in the Hope Beach Series (highly recommend), --was excited yo catch up with familiar characters at the coastal Tidewater Inn, from previous books included in All is Bright.
Both stories are equally intriguing; however, I probably enjoyed this one more, due the bed and breakfast, the beach setting, the mystery, as well as enjoyed seeing Tom and Delilah finally get together. Even though this is a novella, the suspense and mystery is as captivating as a full length novel. Also a sneak peak for readers of Seagrass Pier (Hope Beach #3) A great story of Elin and Marc.
There are many surprises awaiting for Delilah. Bittersweet, she has to face her fears from the past, in order to move on with her future; while allowing others into her personal life.
As always, Coble writes with vivid descriptions, drawing you into the picturesque setting, with a nice escape to this coastal seaside town for the holidays and an upcoming wedding. In addition, she includes a reader’s guide and discussion questions for both stories.
All is Calm
All is Calm was a great introduction for me, not having read any of the Lonestar Series. Also set in an idyllic setting – a ranch in Texas and a haven for many lost souls. We we meet Lauren, who is trying to escape danger (a witness to a murder). She decides Bluebird Ranch is a perfect choice, especially close to Christmas time.
She had spent a life-changing summer there twelve years ago when she was seventeen. It was a terrific ranch that paired abused children with abused horses. When she was a foster kid, the place had been the one bright spot for her. There was always a place there for a good horse and a hard worker. She grabs Angel, the horse and leaves.
Special Ops, Brendan Waddell always considered the Bluebird Ranch a little piece of heaven, as the Christmas lights welcomes him. He was visiting his old friends - always Uncle Brendan for the children, and offering him some time to recuperate with his injury.
Both Brendan and Lauren are looking for a safe haven. He is spending time with an old friend; however, he senses Lauren is running from something. He sees the darkness in her eyes and suffering. He has to find out what is going on. Being in the law enforcement business he has a way of finding out people’s past.
Soon he discovers Dustin’s death and the events surrounding Lauren's situation. Lauren just wanted to get Angel away. However, the two hit it off with their own tragedies, for a budding Christmas romance at Bluebird Ranch. A mystery is uncovered with a happy ending.
Highly recommend for holiday gifts, or your own guilty reading (double) the pleasure! If you have not read Colleen Coble, an author to follow, and one to add to your reading list.
Two Christmas novellas from Colleen Coble with a touch of suspense and a hint of romance. Easy to read in one or two sittings and filled with Christmas spirit. As novellas, the characters could have been developed more, but the plot did carry the storyline in each one. I especially liked the Christmas surprise for Delilah in All is Bright.
{{It’s December and that means Christmas book reviews here on BFCG! Unlike how we did last year with every review day being a Christmas book, this year just Monday & Friday will be reviews of Christmas books. Wednesdays will be reserved for new releases. :) A couple giveaways are also scheduled this month, so keep an eye out!}}

In the first novella, “All is Calm”, had a cute puppy part, but was so kissy! I’m not a fan at all of love at first sight stories and with all those kisses, I really wasn’t a fan. The other novella, “All is Bright”, had a cute part (but I can’t say what because of spoilers) and more Spiritual Content, so I liked it a bit better than the other novella in this collection. The Negative Content was a bit too real for me, though, so that I wasn’t a fan of either. “All is Bright” is heavily about others in this series and since I haven’t read that series, I got lost a few times. The ending really was heavy about the “Hope Beach” series as well, though I had a guess who the person was. Both of these novellas felt like novellas…very short. I think this will be the last book by this author I read, since I haven’t truly enjoyed any books I’ve read by her.
*BFCG may (Read the review to see) recommend this book by this author. It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author. *I received this book for free from the publisher (Thomas Nelson) for this honest review.
Again it was the writing style, for whatever reason it just didn't add up to me. It felt incomplete. Ideas and story development were off in my opinion. I think I've read Colleen Coble before but I can't remember if I felt the same way about it then. I'm going to give her another go and see if maybe it was just this particular book.
Rating: PG -due to some physical violence Language: no profanity or use of deity in a negative way Recommend: umm...not sure
Two of my very favorite Colleen Coble series are the Lonestar & Hope Beach books. So you can imagine how excited I was to read these two novellas that continue the settings and spotlight some secondary characters from the novels.
In All is Calm, much to my delight, Rick’s friend Brendan gets his own story. Brendan popped up here and there during the series, lending his intel expertise when the need arose, and he always intrigued me. All is Bright brings together all my favorite characters from the Hope Beach series – there’s a Christmas wedding to attend, after all! If you haven’t read either of these series, don’t worry. You won’t be lost. But the settings and the characters are much better appreciated when you already have the background in place.
Novellas are by nature short and sweet, but – while both of these are no exception – Colleen Coble has managed to pack a whole lot of punch into such small packages! The suspense is top-notch and the solution to the mystery isn’t obvious. Even though Brendan and Lauren have a bit of insta-love going on in All is Calm, Tom and Delilah in All is Bright are finally acknowledging the feelings that have been building for a while. I actually liked the “case” better in All is Calm and preferred the romance in All is Bright. With the best of both worlds, I was a happy Colleen Coble fan with this collection :)
Bottom Line: Both novellas take place around Christmas but neither fall prey to the saccharine pitfall common to books of the season. (Not that I have anything against the sugary-sweet Christmas novel. I’m a fan of those too! These just weren’t.) Fans of both series will appreciate the return of familiar settings and characters, but readers new to the game will easily be able to follow along with no confusion. A perfect blend of romance and suspense, despite the short lengths, All is Calm and All is Bright are a great choice for a fireside Christmas read!
(I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review.)
This was my first time reading Colleen Coble’s work. I can see why she has so many reading fans. ;) I’m really curious now to get my hands on a full-length novel of hers. These two Christmas novellas made the perfect holiday bundle. They were both light and entertaining reads, just perfect for a cozy night by the fire. I read the entire book in one night!
All is Calm was intriguing from the start and sweetly romantic. I liked several of the characters, especially Brendan. ;) I loved the idea of a ranch pairing abused children with horses. What a neat concept! I didn’t see some twists coming and I applaud the author for how she pieced it all together. Christmas was a tiny backdrop for the story, but it fit nicely.
All is Bright felt a bit more mysterious to me. It started off with a dramatic entrance and caught my attention. I flew through the pages to uncover the secrets. The suspense felt just right. I’m really becoming a fan of this genre! ;) Delilah was a likeable character, very sweet and considerate of others. I didn’t quite connect with her and Tom as much as I did the previous couple, but I was still rooting for them to reach their “Happily-Ever-After”.
For me, sometimes a “light read” means a sweet and simple story that’s easy to read, but lacks a certain depth. Those stories aren’t necessarily bad. Each story has its place. But this Christmas collection was much more. It was short and sweet, but it still offered a believable romance and intriguing plot, even with less pages to deliver the tale.
I do prefer full-length novels, but this novella collection was enjoyable and certainly showed me the quality of the writer. I will be watching for more of her stories!
This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to Thomas Nelson and the TNZ Fiction Guild for my copy of “All is Calm, All is Bright”. Also, I want to thank BookLook Bloggers for a copy of “All is Bright”. ;)
I'm not sure how I've managed to go all this time and not read a Colleen Coble book, but I have been missing out. This book is actually two novellas (and a preview of a book that really makes me want to read it). Both of these stories are full of suspense, and people finding second chances at love.
The characters in these stories come to life in such an easy way, and I found myself feeling like I had been friends with them for years. I love Colleen's writing style, and found these stories so easy to read.
I'm a new fan of Colleen Coble, and I can't wait to get my hands on more of her works.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest reviews*
The first novella follows Lauren who was implicated in a murder at a stable. She flees to a ranch that looks after foster children and horses where she meets Brendan who is on leave after being injured in the marines.
I found this story interesting to read. I haven’t read the rest of the series so I didn’t quite connect with the setting or the characters. I did enjoy the mystery but I’m not a big fan of instalove. I gave this story 3.5/5 ⭐️
The second novella follows two of the side characters from the Hope Beach series, Delilah the hotel manager and Tom the sheriff. Delilah is pushed off the road in her car into the sea but gets rescued. The two of them have to work together to find her attacker whilst exploring their developing feelings for one another.
I found this story more dramatic and better structured than the first one. I connected with it much more as I’ve read the series before. The romance was sweet and believable and the mystery was short but satisfying. I gave this story 4.5/5 ⭐️
Cute stories but they went by so fast. I mean I love a good quick conclusion but I would have enjoyed a little more suspense when figuring things out but it was a cute quick read. Okay read!
Very predictable. Basically, the same thing happened in both short stories, but it was cool ig. The person who "did it" wasn't really in the picture until the very end in both of them. I also don't think the stories connect in any way (unless I'm missing something). The romance was my favorite part, even though it was also predictable. Also, I felt like the stories were really rushed, but I did like the fact that the book was short and easy to read.
Lauren Everman came to Bluebird Ranch when she was a foster kid, she found shelter there as a kid and now finds shelter there. Lauren witnessed a murder and the police think she is actually a suspect. Brendan Waddell knows the owner of Bluebird ranch, one of his Marine buddies. When he comes to the ranch and meets Lauren, he knows she is hiding something. Lauren tells Brendan what happened and he promises to help, at least until Christmas.
I thought All is Calm was a really cute story. Lauren and Brendan were really cute together, especially when they hang out with the kids at the ranch. I also was surprised at who the bad guy was, I didn't see that coming.
Review of All is Bright: 2.5 stars
All is Bright is about Delilah Carter, the manager of Tidewater Inn. Delilah is busy helping plan her friend Elin's wedding, when someone forces Delilah's car off the road and into the ocean. When Sheriff Tom finds out he wants to help her in any way he can.
I thought All is Bright was ok. It was just really cheesy and wasn't really that interesting.
I received a free book from Thomas Nelson/Zondervan Fiction Guild in return for a honest review.
All is Calm All is Bright is a collection of two novellas from best-selling author Colleen Coble. The first, All is Calm, is set in Texas at Bluebird Ranch, so those of you who read and loved her Lonestar series will be delighted to travel back to this special ranch and watch one of the former kids find love of her own. In All is Bright we get to travel back to Tidewater Inn and see the manager find love. In both novellas the characters you came to love in other books make appearances, there's a sweet romance, and best of all a mystery. Somehow, Colleen crams all of this into these bite-sized stories you can read in a sitting.
All Is Calm contains messages of betrayal, love at first sight, change. All Is Bright focuses on inability to reveal your past, trust, not having to prove yourself.
Sentimental messages but that's about it. The writing and narrative lack horsepower. The spirituality content is present but it's not heavy at all, in fact it's appropriate and I enjoyed it very much, being a fan of Christian fiction.
If you're looking for a fast paced Christmas themed escape, with sugary endings without everything in between, this is for you. Think Lifetime and Hallmark with over dramatization tossed in along with a heavy dose of contrive.
This is a great Christmas romance with a murderer trying to ruin the holidays. This is a Christian fiction that isn't preachy at all. If I hadn't seen the publisher I might not have known. Enjoy the suspense and intrigue as this small island brings in the Christmas season.
All is Calm, All is Bright is a collection of two Christmas novellas. I loved these two stories. They both have mystery, suspense, action and romance. I, also, noticed some familiar characters from previous novels written by Colleen Coble. Loved it! 5 stars.
Apparently, these two novellas are part of two series that Colleen Coble has written (Lonestar and Hope Beach). Even though there are returning characters the stories are easily read as stand-alone. Christmas time, mysteries, plots that move quickly, and, of course, sweet romance keep the pages turning in these two stories. I listened to a library copy of the audiobook. The author narrated her own stories which is always a special treat. Readers who enjoy some mystery and romantic suspense in their books will want to read these two stories.
2 short novellas in one book made for 2 quick reads that take place at Christmas time.
Both were a love story and mystery combined, giving a touch of happy holidays and thrill in one. If you've read the series surrounding each story then you recognize some of the characters, making it a great little side story of their lives.
3 stars i think? it was two novellas, so the pacing was kinda weird and couldn’t go rly into detail, but it wasn’t bad. the writing and overall story could be so silly sometimes it was actually so funny. like murderers just popped up out of nowhere but that’s fun i guess. super cute christmas vibes tho!!
