His secrets could destroy her... New Orleans, 1817Colette Kincaid once knew such love and delicious passion in the arms of her pirate husband, Donato de la Roche. Yet Colette could not continue to live as the wife of a pirate, when reunited with her family. So she fled, taking their son with her and reconciling herself to never seeing her husband again...Until their son is taken.Donato is convinced his wife is behind his son's disappearance-just as she is convinced he is the villain. Now they're unable to leave each other's side as they seek their child, forced to confront the desire that still smolders between them. But Donato knows that soon he must face the secret about Colette he's been hiding for so long. And it's a secret for which there is no forgiveness...
I'm a sucker for a historical pirate romance (who isn't?). So when I saw the cover of A Pirate's Command, I needed to read this book.
The story takes place in New Orleans in the early eighteen hundreds. Europe is in turmoil with revolutions rocking the peace of the ruling class. Donato de la Roche is Spanish royalty but also a feared pirate, who roams the waters of the Caribbean. His beloved wife, Colette has fled back home to New Orleans, taking their son with her. Donato wants his son back and won't let anyone get in his way.
Only someone else gets to the boy first. Now Donato and Colette have to work together to figure out who kidnapped him and get their son. Along the way, they will also have to come to terms with truth about their feelings for one another. Love might not be enough to heal their two wounded hearts.
This book was everything I anticipated; love gone awry, secrets, a sexy pirate, political intrigue, and a smoking hot love story. Meg Hennessy did her homework. She added plenty of cool nautical terms and period dialogue that gave the story an authentic feel. I liked the slow burn between Donato and Colette. After Colette's disappearance with their son, their relationship would naturally take time to heal. Colette had very valid reasons for returning to New Orleans with her brother and not trusting Donato...but a handsome, Spanish pirate is pretty hard to resist!
I am looking forward to reading more from Meg Hennessy. The reviewer was given an ARC for an honest review.
Donato de la Roche is a revolutionary. Born to the aristocracy of Spain but disagreeing with the way the King of Spain treats his colonies. At this particular moment though he only has one task, retrieve his son.
Collette Kincade was rescued from a pirate's island by her brother. Unfortunately she's not completely sure taking her son away from his father was the right thing to do.
This is the second book of the series and while you can read it on it's own, it's better if you have read the first one.
An historical romance with lots of emotion, revenge and family conflict. Add in a difficult Atlantic crossing and you get a very entertaining read.
This was had me thinking awhile, while it was pleasant enough to read it wasn't that great. It didnt get my hyped or angsty or even panty dropping hot.
OUR HERO is of cuban descent, a revolutionist against his own people and son of a Duke. He is married to our heroine but because of his occupation and past hazards, it got in the way of their marriage. Like any proud man, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me - he decided that since his wife betrayed him by leaving with his son, he shall now get his son back, sans wife. He obvious still loves Colette and is pining away but still holding a grudge. So, when his son Enio is kidnapped both parents have to work together to get him back but at the cost of revealing Donato's past misdeeds that catapulted Colette into their first meeting.
OUR HEROINE has a lame ankle, no thanks to the abduction on Donato's part. She was collateral damage but through events they both got married and have a son. The past was told bit by bits but the story takes place during Enio's kidnapping. I feel that while Colette is a good mother, I think she makes a poor wife, passion not withstanding. If she truly loved her husband, she would have believed in his capability to protect her and Enio before she blindly followed her brother back to civilisation and reclaim her identity. Apparently some shit went down, probably in the first book but I didn't read it. Anyway she isn't a very strong character, often weeping and getting a bit hysterical. Sometimes it's okay but she may overdoes it at times.
OVERALL I wouldn't revisit this. The story has potential i guess but I just end up getting mad at the characters for not being open enough as a married couple and compromisation through TALKING! That way misunderstandings can be avoided. Colette was no innocent party when she up and ran away but at least she had the decency to apologise many times to her husband for hurting him. Guess women then and now are very different.
Wow, I liked this book. It's the second one I've read by this author, and I like it for a lot of the same reasons I liked the first one. It's set in Louisiana in the early 1800s, and the author has really captured the rich, mysterious feeling of the place and time.
Because of a past trauma, the heroine, Colette, has memory lapses that keep her from remembering much of the recent past, including how she came to be together with her husband, the infamous pirate Donato de la Roche. But when the book opens, they are no longer together. She and her baby had been rescued by her brother Jordan, and taken to live in New Orleans, and the pirate is on his way to steal back his child. Unfortunately, the child is abducted before he arrives, and Colette and Donato, who no longer trust one another, and think the other is the abductor, join forces to recover the child.
The characters are strong, interesting, passionate, and yet realistic. The situations they face are harrowing, including sea battles and rough weather, which are told so realistically that you feel as if you're right there in the midst of the excitement. Just wonderful. And the intrigue, the mystery of why the child was taken, what situation they'll find when they get to him, and the truth of Colette's and Donato's past, is just as real and just as fascinating.
I loved the rich and interesting time period and locations. And I loved the characters. I especially loved the rivalry between Colette's brother and Donato, who didn't hesitate to sink Jordan's boat when he had the chance. Even so, Jordan looks out for Donato in the end. I was sorry that the book had to end, all the more because it ends with an annoyingly effective cliffhanger that has me impatient for the third book in this series.
Thank you to Entangled and NetGalley for a free ARC.
All right. Well, I'm not a big romance reader, but I picked this one up because of the Spanish pirate. Of course I'd want to read that. Good premise, but the plot moves along slowly. That's this book's biggest fault. It's SLOW. I wanted more tension. More mystery.
I did, however, enjoy the characters. Colette is a little bland, and Donato isn't as pirate-y as I would have liked, but the side characters are fascinating. I liked Colette's brothers, Jordan and Loul, and I would have liked to see more of them. And then Rayna. I'm guessing the author is going to write a third novel with Rayna as the star, and if that's the case, I might give it a shot. We don't see her all that much, but the few times we do, she's COOL. Smart. Dangerous. Ruthless. I liked her.
What else can I say? Good job with nautical terms. Not such a good job with the Spanish. I often found myself quoting Inigo Montoya: "I don't think that word means what you think it means…"
I appreciate the historical time period. Yay Peninsular Wars! However, I wanted more more MORE.
An excellent 2nd installment to the Secrets of the Bayous trilogy! I'm a sucker for trilogies and Meg Hennessy does not disappoint in this series! It is not necessary to have ready book 1 to love book 2, but I'm still glad to have read that one first! If you read this one and liked it, be sure to go back for the first one! I love historicals, mystery and suspense and this novel is perfect for late summer night reading! This is one of those "stay-up-late-reading-because-you-can't-put-down" books! I had tired eyes the next day. The atmosphere created by the author is very real and the character development stellar!
With this being the first book I have read by Ms Hennessy I did not have any expectations of liking or not liking the book. I found the storyline and the characters well developed. The characters are strong, passionate, and interesting. There are people rescued, and a kidnapping, plus a love story. What more could you ask for? Maybe the setting? New Orleans, one of me favorited places to visit. Historical stories are not my favorite things to read but I have to say that with the action and emotions involved in this story she captured my attention.

So I know Ive mentioned in the past that my go to genre is sometimes historical romances. I was intrigued by the blurb on this.
I liked this book. Its a good read, a bit slow in parts. I felt like it wasn't as as Piratey as i thought it was going to be. Plenty of history in it regarding Spain history.
I liked the characters. although I felt like Colette wasn't as strong of a character as i would of liked her to be. I liked the story line and felt it was true to the story.
If you like a historical romance then give this a read.
Thanks Entangled Publishing, LLC and netgalley for arc.
I expected more from this book. Their is a lo of repetition and boasting going on but i guess others didn't read book 1. Other than that I'd say Meg Hennessy gives great historical romance and action. Love Pirates with accents you can imagine so well...
I wasn't sure of this book at first because I was looking for a romance and these two had already had a child and split up. However, it turned out to be a traditional ship bound historical pirate story in the best sense. All the things I loved about 1980s pirate stories and no rape scene! Fantastic. Many characters have a wicked sense of humor too.
Right mixture of genre - history - suspense - romance. The story of Colette and Donato keep you turning the pages to a satisfying end. The romance between these two characters is amazing as is the love for their little boy.
I have a hard time writing reviews I will not give awAy the story this books is a good book from the start to the end the story is a romance with pirates I read Book a day so it's a good book read it
Colette and Donato's story is filled with personal tension and adventure. I couldn't stop reading. I had to find out how they were going to get Enio back.
