About the author

Olivier Truc was born in France in 1964. He has worked as a journalist since 1986, and is based in Stockholm since 1994, where he is currently the Nordic and Baltic correspondent for Le Monde and Le Point. As a reporter, Olivier Truc covers subjects from politics and economics to social issues like immigration and minorities. He has also produced TV documentaries, including one that portrays a group of Norwegian policemen in Lapland ("The Reindeer Police," 2008). He has previously published two non-fiction books. Forty Days Without Shadow is his first novel, and will be published in the original French by Éditions Métailié in September 2012.

Swedish review

I Skuggorna vänder tillbaka är Klemet Nango och Nina Hansen från renpolisen tillbaka för att ännu en gång lösa en mordgåta. Boken inleds med att Erik, en renuppfödare dör när en renflock ska simma över ett sund, det verkar vara en olycka, men sedan hittas borgmästaren död i närheten av en helig klippa och ytterliggare dödsfall sker. Kan det vara ett samband mellan alla dessa dödsfall?

Jag läste Fyrtio dagar utan skugga 2014 och det var en bok som jag verkligen gillade. En kriminalare vars handling utspelar sig I Lappland var verkligen något nytt. Så, när jag såg att det skulle komma en uppföljare så blev jag verkligen glad. I denna bok så förutom de besynnerliga morden är det en kamp mellan samarna och de som vill att Hammarfest ska växa och bli det arkitiska svaret på Dubai. Mycket pengar står på spel och samarnas livstil och traditioner hotar stadens framväxt. Klemet och Nina måste utreda om morden som begås har något med Eriks död att göra, eller om hans bortgång bara vara en tragiskt olycka. Det är många olika pusselbitar som måste passas ihop och det är svårt att lista ut hur allting låg till under läsningen och det gjorde boken verkligen läsvärd för att jag inte kunde lista ut hur allting skulle lösa sig.

I jämförelse med första boken tyckte jag att handlingen i denna bok inte var lika intressant samt att jag saknde en karaktär from första boken som inte är med i denna och varje gång hans namn nämdes så blev jag lite ledsen. Men boken är definitivt  läsvärt och man behöver inte läsa första boken för att hänga med i handlingen i denna bok.

In Skuggorna vänder tillbaka are Klemet Nango and Nina Hansen från the reindeer cops back to once again solve a murder mystery. The book starts off with Erik, a reindeer breeder dies when a reindeer herd is going to cross a strait. It seemed to be an accident, but then the mayor is found dead close to a holy cliff and then several more people are killed. Are the murders linked to the death of the reindeer breeder or is it all a coincidence?

I read Fyrtio dagar utan skugga in 2014 and that was a book that I really liked. To be able to read a crime novel that takes place in Lapland, Sweden was really something new. So, I was really happy to see that a sequel was on its way. In this book, there are some mysterious murders, but there are also conflicts between the Sami population and those that want the city Hammarfest to grow and become the arctic answer to Dubai. A lot of money is at stake och Sami's way of life and traditions is threatening the city's progress. Klemet and Nina have to investigate to find out if the murders have anything to Erik, the reindeer herders death or if his death was just a tragic accident. The book is like a puzzle where everything that happens is a piece that needs to be fitted to the right place, and I like that I couldn't figure out the plot right away.

However, I think that the story in the first book was a bit better, for instance, I missed a certain person that was in the first book, but not in this book, and the mere mentioning of him made me a bit sad. But, the book is certainly worth reading and you don't have to read the first book to keep up with the story in this book.

Skarba un sāpīga grāmata par lietu kārtību - progress vs senās gadsimtu tradīcijas.. Nauda, izdevīgums, nafta, gods, svētvietas, lepnums. Norvēģu naftas pasaka un tās cena. Šis gan īsti nav krimiķis vai detektīvs, bet grāmatas ritms ievelk un šķiet, ka polārā saule spīd arī te:)

Jāatzīst, "Vilka jūras šaurumā" ziemeļbriežu audzētāju un Lapzemes vides bija vairāk kā detektīvintrigas. Diemžēl man grāmatas pirmo pusi būtu jāsauc par ievadu, jo nav īsti kam pieķerties, lai sāktu mežģīt prātu. Jāsauc par ievadu skarbajā vidē un sāmu problēmās (teritoriju un svētvietu apdraudējums naftas ieguves un pilsētas attīstības vārdā). Toties pēc tam notikumi un izmeklēšana sāk kļūt spraigāki.
Kopumā man vienalga patika. Viena papildus zvaigzne francūzim par Lapzemi.

3.5 arrondi à 4. D’abord un roman qui dénonce les conditions inhumaines subit par les plongeurs pour le compte des pétrolières, dont l’avidité n’a d’égale que le mépris de la vie humaine. Un pan de d’histoire pas très glorieuse de la Norvège. Sur le fond, nous avons encore le mépris du peuple Sami, particulièrement pour leurs activités d’élevage de rennes. En terme d’intrigue, c’est plutôt nébuleux ou l’envie et l’ambition côtoient la vengeance. Il reste des zones d’ombres en bout de ligne. Par contre , j’ai apprécié de connaître le fin fond de l’histoire familiale de Nina que l’auteur a amorcé au premier opus de l’auteur ( que je suis en train de lire)

Bezsakars ne grāmata. Katru lapu lasīju ar domu, ka varbūt paliks labāk un sāksies trilleris, detektīvs, krimiķis “pa īstam”, tā arī nesākās. Pārāk daudz tēlu, liela daļa no tiem neizstrādāti un stāstam nepiedod nekādu jēgu. Notikumu jēga īsti nesaprotama, motīvi neskaidri, viss tādā pliekanā bardakā.

Uno de los mayores atractivos de la novela es que te sientes trasladado al polo Artico. La novela transcurre en la ciudad más septentrional al norte de Noruega, en Hammerfest, localizada en la isla de Kvaloya, y se comunica con el continente mediante el puente Kvalsund.
El proyecto de la planta de gas natural de Snohvit, trajo como consecuencia un boom económico, lo que se refleja en la denuncia social por los intereses de los petroleros sobre los terrenos que los ganaderos usan para el pastoreo de Renos.
Destaco lo hermoso de paisajes árticos , las auroras boreales, de las gentes y que Hammerfest es también un importante centro de la cultura Sami y parte del mundo de los buzos asociados al negocio petrolífero.

Siamo di nuovo nella terra dei Sami, dilaniata dalla corsa allo sfruttamento del petrolio. Ancora una storia che rivela la durezza del conflitto tra interessi economici forti e allevatori di renne. Tradizione contro un progresso incurante delle vittime che lascia lungo il cammino. Anche qui l'indagine, molto diluita, è un pretesto per trasportarci nel mondo della transumanza delle renne, in una stagione in cui non fa mai buio, nemmeno quando il sole tramonta.

Víc se mi líbil Poslední Laponec, ale ani toto nebylo špatné. Občas jsem byla trochu ztracená, ale zase zvítězilo laponské prostředí se sobi, které se mi moc líbí a opravdu mě zaujali nové postavy, hodně se mi líbila Anneli a to všechno o potápěčích bylo vážně něco, hodně drsné. Zase jsem mohla objevit další kousek tohoto studeného koutku světa. Jsem zvědavá, až vyjde třetí díl, o čem to bude. Doufám, že se dočkáme.

Kaut kas autora darbos ir maģisks. Valoda, ja godīgi, tāda- nekāda, primitīvi teikumi, reizēm doma kaut kur apraujas, tu esi gatavs sižeta padziļinājumam, bet nē, tevi ved jau tālāk. Bet varbūt tas pirmatnējais, primitivais ir tas, kas piesaista.
Nelasīju pareizā secībā- šo izlasīju kā pēdējo no 3 zināmajiem iztulkotajiem darbiem, bet šis "paķēra" vairāk un dziļāk nekā pārējie.
Stabilas 4 zvaigznes.

I read the English translation, 'Forty Days Without Shadow'. First thriller I have read that takes place in Lapland and features the raindeer police. I enjoyed this book and hopefully his second novel will be published in English. Great characters, fantastic locale, satisfying mystery, a good read?

Tanto mi era piaciuto L'ultimo lappone, tanto ho trovato insulso questo.
Il romanzo precedente si svolgeva durante la notte artica, questo invece è ambientato durante l'estate quando il sole non tramonta praticamente mai. Anche qui si parla dei Sami e del loro stile di vita legato alla terra, alla transumanza delle renne, al culto della Natura, uno stile di vita che poco si sposa con l'urbanizzazione, lo sfruttamento dei giacimenti di petrolio offshore, la necessità di nuove strade e aeroporti. La vicenda "gialla" ha a che fare con un esperimento condotto molti anni prima, in cui alcuni sommozzatori sono stati sfruttati e hanno subito conseguenze fisiche e psicologiche gravissime, ma la storia è troppo frammentaria, con troppi personaggi scialbi e poco interessanti. Ho fatto fatica a seguire il filo e a mantenere la concentrazione. Non c'è neanche una grande evoluzione dei due detective protagonisti, Klemet e Nina. Di quest'ultima si scopre qualcosa in merito al suo passato, al padre sommozzatore che non vede da tanti anni, ma anche quella parte l'ho trovata piatta e poco coinvolgente.

Dans les contrées sauvages de Laponie, à l'époque de l'année où le jour ne se couche que quelques heures, nous voici en compagnie de la police des rennes à enquêter sur diverses affaires.
Plusieurs raisons à mon abandon, tout d'abord et principalement la voix du lecteur (j'ai emprunté la version audio de ce livre) soporifique et peu encline à me mettre en condition pour l'histoire. Ensuite, des personnages peu attachants voire pas du tout, sans réelle profondeur, avec des comportements étranges et des réactions contradictoires. Et une action quasi inexistante du moins ai-je trouvé. Alors certes, les grandes étendues nordiques sont attrayantes, les paysages sont splendidement rendus et l'atmosphère prête à la contemplation mais lorsque l'on écoute un polar ce n'est pas vraiment ce à quoi je m'attendais. Assez déçue pour cette première découverte de cet auteur dont on m'avait vanté les mérites. Peut-être la version audio ne rend-elle pas service à son style plus lancinant.
Pour les amateurs de grands espaces plutôt que de polars

this book was unlike anything i've read before. Honestly, I bought it mainly because of the title (yes, I think I will read anything that has "wolf" in the title). It was a very weird experience, many times I felt like I don't really know what's going on but....I was very much enjoying (?) myself when reading it. It was very different from the normal literature I read but I think that's why I liked it.
I didn't expect that there will be that much of a Dan Brown type of mystery with clues and secret documents and I kinda felt like it wasn't executed very well...but I love Norway and I love reading about snow and cold, and lately, I even like reading about crime in its many forms. This book thought me many things I did not have the slightest idea about and I enjoyed that very much. All those things about the people that live there and about culture or how higher-ups really just care about profit and not human lives (or animal lives).
It was a good book and I am glad I got out of my comfort zone, picked it up and finished it.

Przyjemne połączenie zagadki kryminalnej z arktycznymi krajobrazami i (dotąd bliżej mi nieznaną) kulturą Lapońską. Autor umiejętnie przedstawia nam zderzenie różnych światów i perspektywę każdego z nich. Główni bohaterowie byli trochę nijacy, jednak postaci poboczne były lepiej napisane, a przede wszystkim wiarygodne. Zakończenie przewidywalne, mimo to satysfakcjonuje. Książka jest przyjemnie napisana i nie odczuwałam, żeby stała w miejscu, chociaż zdarzały się błędy w tłumaczeniu/składaniu zdań, które potrafiły wybić z rytmu. Po za tym uważam, że druga część opisu zdradza trochę za dużo i żałowałam że go przeczytałam. Po czasie zauważyłam też, że jest to drugi tom z serii, jednak nie miałam żadnego problemu ze zrozumieniem jej bez znajomości pierwszego, co więcej, nie sądzę, żeby łączyło je coś, oprócz głównego bohatera. Generalnie książka nie jest idealna, ani genialna, jednak warta przeczytania.

Jag är fångad av en storm vind & språket är som gnistrande snö, miljöbeskrivningar, sapmi vidderna är underbara.

À Hammerfest, un jeune éleveur de rennes trouve la mort dans un incident troublant, puis c’est le maire qui est trouvé mort. Autre enquête de la police des rennes, avec Nina et Khlemet, bien avant Le premier renne. En fait, il s’agit du deuxième livre de la série La police des rennes. Je viens de recevoir ma réservation numérique du tout premier, Le Dernier Lapon, mais j’hésite à m’y plonger tout de suite. Je me suis un peu ennuyée par moments en lisant cette œuvre. Je trouvais qu’il y avait des longueurs, que l’intrigue traînait.

La realtà di una parte della Lapponia, non quella che cerca di resistere al mondo occidentale ma quella che ormai non può che dirsi annientata dallo sfruttamento dei giacimenti petroliferi. Le tradizioni e la cultura lappone (che tanto mi hanno incuriosito e affascinato nel primo romanzo di Truc) ora fanno quasi da sfondo alle indagini, perdendo importanza. Sembra quasi ci sia la rassegnazione di un mondo che si sente sconfitto ed è ormai stanco di lottare. Sempre una lettura affascinante.

Knížka není špatná, nicméně mi přijde, že je trošku místy zmatečná. Co se mi naopak líbí je, že postavy občas nejsou tím, kým se zdají být a vlastně umí i příjemně překvapit. A asi mě i překvapilo, jak celý příběh do sebe až trošku nečekaně zapadá, i když některé souvislosti nejsou v závěru zcela vysvětlené.
