Origami meets amazing creatures in a book of paper craft fun!
Papertoy Glowbots introduces 46 robots that have the added cool factor of lighting up, whether using glow-in-the-dark stickers that come with the book or light sources like flashlights, Christmas tree lights, and electric tea lights.
The 46 die-cut paper robots are created by Brian Castleforte, author of Papertoy Monsters , along with the hottest papertoy designers from around the world. Meet the robots and read about their entertaining backstories in the front, then turn to the card stock section in the back to build them. The templates are die-cut and ready to pop out, fold, and glue. Bold, colorful graphics ensure the robots look as amazing in the daytime as they do with the lights off.
A member of my household . . . okay, it was me . . . decided she wanted to do a robot Xmas tree this year.
I planned to use one of my aluminum trees. Can't you just picture it - all shiny, and silvery, robots hanging from every metallic bough? The only drawback was my utter lack of robot ornaments. Then I remembered this book, added to my to-read list in August of last year. So, I ordered a copy, and got my husband's promise to spend a few evenings sitting at the kitchen table, happily constructing robots with me.
Yeah. That didn't happen.
The designs themselves are beyond awesome - brilliant colors, whimsical designs - they are simply stunning.
The problem lies with the construction. Everything must be GLUED. Yep, I do now see that it does say STEP 3: GLUE! right there on the cover, but I didn't notice that as I was distracted by the thought of ROBOTS! The designers recommend using white glue (takes forever to dry, and who's got that kind of time), glue stick (a so-so method that tends to let go after a few weeks), or double-sided tape.
One evening last week, my husband and I each punched out a robot. Then I got out the tape. My husband had trouble getting the pieces of tape off his sausage-like fingers, so he wished me good luck, and shuffled off to play Call of Duty. Sigh. I persevered on my own. The instructions are fine; there are plenty of diagrams, and for the two robots I made, there was only one step that was unclear.
BUT, having to glue everything was a real pain in the ass. Some pieces kept popping open, and I had to resort to Elmer's. My back was sore, and my head was throbbing. It took me an hour and a half to make two robots. At that rate, I'll have enough to decorate a tree sometime in late 2019.
So, for this year anyway, my spectacular, awesomely-retro tree remains a dream.
Maybe it's just me, but I thought the bot construction would be easier; more of a matter of inserting tab A into slot B, with NO GLUING! And, I didn't think doing this would be so time-consuming. Keeping in mind how long it took me to make two robots with a difficulty level of EASY, I'm assuming I'd need to set aside an entire weekend to make the one on the cover which is rated ADVANCED. The book is listed as being for ages 9+. Maybe I can hire a nine-year-old to make these for me? Oy!
Designs and presentation - 5 fully blazing stars Ease of construction - just barely 3 But, still . . . ROBOTS!!!! - 4 stars
I LOVE every book by this author. I recommend DOUBLE SIDED TAPE instead of glue.
The designs are brightly colored and really do look as cool in person. Everything is printed on card stock and perforated so it’s easy to detach and fold. Good book for kids and origami enthusiasts.
A really fun, do it yourself book for creative young minds. This book includes everything you need to make your own paper robot. With over 46 robots to create, this book comes with pictures of each robot, information about the robot, including their name, the directions on how to build them, and the cut out robot, along with stickers to add to them. This book is hours of fun for those who love to build, and create.
This book was reviewed on my blog, The Overstuffed Bookcase, as a part of the feature Kiddo's Corner Reviews, where my son reviews children's books. You can watch our review of this and a few other books here as well as find many other reviews on my blog.
I took this to work with me and used it for indoor recess. Ithe was a hit. The kids loved it! I recommend it for rainy days or when you want to engage your children. We will be using it again and again.
