For the past decade Tyler Durden’s been sneaking out of Sebastian’s subconscious. Sebastian has a nice wife and a nice kid. He has a nice home in the suburbs. Nice-enough neighbors. Now all that’s going up like so much potassium permanganate.
Written in stolen moments under truck chassis and on park benches to a soundtrack of The Downward Spiral and Pablo Honey, Fight Club came into existence. The adaptation of Fight Club was a flop at the box office, but achieved cult status on DVD. The film’s popularity drove sales of the novel. Chuck put out two novels in 1999, Survivor and Invisible Monsters. Choke, published in 2001, became Chuck’s first New York Times bestseller. Chuck’s work has always been infused with personal experience, and his next novel, Lullaby, was no exception. Chuck credits writing Lullaby with helping him cope with the tragic death of his father. Diary and the non-fiction guide to Portland, Fugitives and Refugees, were released in 2003. While on the road in support of Diary, Chuck began reading a short story entitled 'Guts,' which would eventually become part of the novel Haunted.
In the years that followed, he continued to write, publishing the bestselling Rant, Snuff, Pygmy, Tell-All, a 'remix' of Invisible Monsters, Damned, and most recently, Doomed.
Chuck also enjoys giving back to his fans, and teaching the art of storytelling has been an important part of that. In 2004, Chuck began submitting essays to ChuckPalahniuk.net on the craft of writing. These were 'How To' pieces, straight out of Chuck's personal bag of tricks, based on the tenants of minimalism he learned from Tom Spanbauer. Every month, a “Homework Assignment” would accompany the lesson, so Workshop members could apply what they had learned. (all 36 of these essays can currently be found on The Cult's sister-site, LitReactor.com).
Then, in 2009, Chuck increased his involvement by committing to read and review a selection of fan-written stories each month. The best stories are currently set to be published in Burnt Tongues, a forthcoming anthology, with an introduction written by Chuck himself.
His next novel, Beautiful You, is due out in October 2014.
What an I missing here? Am I reading a different version to everybody else who gives these book 4 and 5 stars? This was better than volume 1 in that there was less clutter on the pages, but it was still dull. There was a bit of violence which happens off-page and you just see the end result. The most interesting part is at the end when Tyler Durden leaves a message to the reader, I really wish this had been made into a novel, the graphic novel seems a way of chickening out of doing something properly.
Initial investigation says that their child didn't die in the fire, it was some wayward student who got mixed up with the wrong crowd. Sebastian knows who exactly took their child, and the only way for him to get the child back is to go to Paper Street, but Marla has to fuck his face up first. Give him a better resume. Marla gets creative and bludgeons Sebastian with the cistern cover. It's grisly, edgy and nervous. Now we're talking.
Another awesome installment. I continue to be torn between liking Marla and despising Marla. I was worried the first one ended on a sad note but it did not turn out as I expected!
These read super quickly, which I HATE. It just over so soon! Good thing when I ran to get #2 earlier after finishing #1, I also bought #3 and #4. YES.
Fight Club 2'nin comic book olması şahane ama 10 sayfalık fasikülleri beklemek çok can sıkıcı oluyor. 5 dakikada da bitiyor kitaplar. Bir an önce tamamlanıp filminin çekilmesini bekliyorum dinimiz amin.
The overall plot of the series starts now, when Sebastian resolves to find his son, who he, himself, had kidnapped, or more accurately, his alter-ego Tyler Durden did. Sebastian decides to infiltrate his former own creation, Project Mayhem (yes, it is still going) at the Paper Street house, but first he can’t look like himself. So he has Marla beat him to a pulp, especially on the face, to make him unrecognizable to the other space monkeys. So far, so good.
Yet, though I did like the plot, and it’s a really interesting way to get the “narrator” back at the Paper Street house, this is also the point where the fan service becomes too brazen for me, or close to being. Sebastian turns to Marla and says, “I want you to hit me as hard as you can.” It’s tolerable, but it really did seem like having Worf from Star Trek say, “Today is a good day to die,” again. For those that may not know, “I want you to hit me as hard as you can,” is the iconic line Tyler says to the “narrator” to kick off the founding of Fight Club. (NOTE: this won’t be the last fan service in the series either.)
I haven't read short comic books since I was a kid and Spiderman came in the Sunday newspaper so I'm not used to how short these are! I know that's just the medium but it is difficult to transition to if you aren't typically a comic book / graphic novel reader, at least it was for me. I feel like even though I just want to race through and find out what happens, that I need to spend more time on every page and really take it all in. Or I'll just read it 5 times before the next one comes out. Regardless, I love the way this story is going. Nothing I would have ever expected which is actually classic Chuck. Thanks Chuck Palahniuk, for giving out the first issue for free on your tour! You've got me committed to showing up at the comic book store every time one of these will release now...
I actually enjoyed this installment a lot more than I enjoyed the first one. I really love the direction this story is starting to take and I'm really curious about what will happen in the next issue.
I just really found everything in this issue so, so interesting and I read it through a couple of times just because of that. And wow. Where it ended? So excited to see where that goes. I have so many questions and theories about where this is leading.
So I'm really happy with how this is shaping up and very excited to see where everything goes!
Oh and that last scene at the end of this issue? That was great. Wow. Loved that so much. I can't even think about it without laughing a bit. BEST.
It's tough to rate these as individual issues because this is clearly still setting up the story and you don't learn too much about where it's going so in that regard it's not very good. Has some throwback lines to the previous book "I want you to hit me as hard as you can" and the whole ear thing which is unneeded honestly. Everyone knows those lines, move on. The best part of Fight Club is Tyler and he's not even in this issue so you leave feeling like you missed out. Side note, it's hilarious that Chuck named the narrator Sebastian. What a perfect choice lol
The art is beautiful. It... just isn't as good as the first issue. It reads more like a piece of a whole story than a worthy single issue. If the first issue is any indication, the collected book will be a five, but this issue lost something by not being part of the whole.
I am freaking out, with every line has me excited and ready for more. Hit me as hard as you can!!! Marla has been messing up Sebastian's meds so Durden came come back. Can you really cheat on your husband with his split personality?
Not really the prediction that I had of an artist as much a Palahniuk
The book was really just a Rather Short comic at that stage which I had read it. I had High Hopes for Chuck, but I may or may not give him another chance...?
I read this issue while listening to the Fight Club Soundtrack. This added a nice dynamic and I'll probably do the same for the remainder of the series.
A little more of the story is revealed with this new issue. Still can't say where things are going or whether they'll be good, but I am excited for what's to come.
Starring to pick up speed. The momentum is building. The engine will crank to life. Soon the machine will be tearing down the mountain like an avalanche.
