Dance like nobody’s watching. Love like you’ll never get hurt… Laura Watkin’s heart isn’t broken, she’s just forgotten how to use it.
After years on her own, the highlight of single mum Laura’s week is watching Strictly Come Dancing with a glass of Pinot Grigio and a large helping of imagination.
With her daughter Sophie going travelling, Laura knows the time is right to do something for herself for a change. One disastrous Zumba class later and Laura ends up at the feet (literally) of gorgeous dance instructor Tony Hernandez.
A natural dancer and inspiring teacher, Tony rekindles in Laura a passion she inherited from her ballroom dancer father – and with it comes a dream… to make him proud.
But when Tony enters them to perform at the National Dance Festival, can Laura’s new-found confidence survive the test? And with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn Flamenco in Spain, could Laura truly learn to dance like nobody’s watching… and love like she’ll never get hurt?
A laugh-out-loud, uplifting comedy about finding the courage to be yourself, the importance of dreams, and learning to grab life by the glitter balls.
Sue Watson was a TV Producer at the BBC until she wrote her first book and was hooked.

Laura's daughter Sophie is ready to go of into the world and now is the time for Laura to do something for herself. Her parents were avid dancers and she had a talent for it too and so she decides to join a once-a-week dance school. It is clear to the dance instructor Tony that she has amazing talent and starts pushing her into the right direction.
Laura comes across as shy and timid, but you can clearly see her character evolve the more she dances. Her courage and self esteem grows and she starts doing things for "her." I really liked Tony's character. He was exactly the breath of fresh air she needed in her life.
From Laura's brief trip to Spain, I did want a little more around that part of the storyline. This book flowed so quickly and the story was fast paced and sweet. The ending had a few secrets revealed which in my opinion is always a good way to close off any book.
I really liked the narration, with good voice changes and a nice pace. Overall a nice Women's Fiction book with that added bit of Humor.
Thank you Netgalley and Saga Egmont Audio for the opportunity to review this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am a HUGE of Sue Watson and if you have a rather filthy sense of humour, and like a good giggle her books don’t fail to raise a smile. MAKE SURE you read the description of what type of book it is before you read it and then slate it…it clearly states it’s a funny and uplifting romantic comedy. Thankfully this does exactly what it says on the tin. Laura Watkins is your average divorcee who is working to make ends meet and is trying to ensure her daughter doesn't go off the rails following a disastrous relationship. I know that quoting lines can be irritating for some people but I just knew that when I read the below lines within the first chapter that I would be laughing at quite a few lines in this latest book.
“I would be sending a very stiff email to ‘God.Com’ when all this was over, telling him and his staff to sort their s*it out. No wonder people were going to Supermarkets on a Sunday instead of going to Jesus”
When Laura’s daughter Sophie goes travelling and she realises her life consists of working and nights in front of Strictly Come Dancing, she is determined to make a few changes. And that is exactly what she does along with some wonderful characters. Enter Tony the Dance Instructor who is a hilarious character that has bucketful’s of attitude, glitter and stories to tell. He is determined to teach Laura to dance and for once do something for herself.
The journey they take from there on in is brilliant. The story is everything you want from this sort of book. I wanted Laura to become the person she could be and found myself wishing I could watch this in a film too! There is one particularly funny chapter entitled ‘Slut Dropping Zumba Queens and Someone Else’s Leggings’. Suffice to say it was a very amusing chapter that I’m pretty sure quite a few people can sympathise with.
By the time I finished this book I wanted to book myself on a trip to Grenada to see all the sexy Spanish men and women dancing Flamenco. This is a cracking book which had me smiling and laughing and it’s the perfect tonic for the everyday boring blues that most people experience. Some people may wonder why only 4 stars instead of 5, well Love, Lies and Lemon Cake was one of my favourite books of 2014 and Sue has to go some to top that. Another fantastic read and as usual I can’t wait to read the next one!
Sue Watson is an author that brings a smile to my face, her writing bounces between energetic and thought provoking. One minute I'm laughing until I'm crying, the next sitting reflecting and sometimes crying again - all in a good way of course.
Summer Flings & Dancing Dreams is just brilliant, I loved every page. It's a book about relationships between mothers and daughters, about living life for yourself, not through others, a book of self discovery with humour softening the edges.
It begins on Sophie's wedding day, or what would have been if she'd not just been jilted - They are both sitting in the churchyard reflecting on life, both feeling a bit of a failure and knowing they need to do something. Her mother, Laura is trying to comfort her, not really having the answers needed to soften the blow. Sophie decides she's going to go travelling, wanting to escape the embarrassment of her failed relationship, Laura just wants a life - she's a single parent, stuck in a rut, working in her local supermarket, a job she hates but needs to help pay for the care home her mother lives in and an aborted wedding.
Sue drags you headlong into a story before you even get chance to take a breathe. I don't think I have ever laughed out loud and literally choked trying to stop laughing as much as I did whilst reading certain scenes in this book - Laura unfortunately was the cause of most of it. Her relationship with both her daughter and mother at times cause utter mayhem. I've so many favourite moments - Laura's trip to a Zumba class, dragged along as a way of getting fit by her friend Carole. Her often cringeworthy visits with her 'deaf' mother at the nursing home and hilarious, foot in the mouth moments caused by her Skype conversations with her daughter (only a mother's first conversation would be about knickers) when she was travelling are some of them. Sue's descriptions are so vivid I could well have been with her in every scenario, particularly stood in the dance class with them and her description of Laura's moves convinced me Sue had been a fly on the wall when I tried Zumba - an exercise that requires a modicum of co-ordination - something neither Laura or I have.
I loved how Sue portrayed the characters in particular the leading ladies. We see each in turn slip into the role of both mother & child. Each caring for and nudging each other on. In the beginning Laura is stuck in the middle acting as parent to both her daughter and her own mother. Sophie also taking on the role of parent, worrying about her mum and urging her to 'get a life' not quite being able to fully let go and live her own life because of worrying about her mother. Until she does, then...... well let's just say tables are turned and Sophie has a 'be careful what you wish for' moment or two.
After the one and only Zumba class Laura attends she finds herself dragged into a ballroom dancing class run by Tony. He's spotted her moves and thinks she'd be perfect..... really is the only thought I had at this moment. The music, the history - Laura grew up surrounded by dance as both parents were professional dancers and the fact that Tony was gay, therefore off limits, gives Laura confidence and security. Her mouth kept saying no, but her feet and body said something else altogether. The music unlocking her inner self - Tony nurturing and pushing in equal measures, when dancing she became a different person.
I'm smiling just writing this review as I think back to how the characters evolved and grew in this book. The dancing and Tony's friendship were a catalyst for Laura's growth - the ripples growing ever wider as her confidence grew. Sue through Summer Flings & Dancing Dreams demonstrates it's never too late to learn and dreams aren't just for young people. We each have to be there, to love and support our family and friends but should all live our own lives too - I'm inspired to find a dance class - the energy and fun just poured out of this story, if someone can just point me in the direction of the nearest Tony first!
Huge thanks to Kim and all the team at Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read Sue Watson's latest offering - Sue I love you, you make me smile and I'm tapping my feet waiting for your next book - just one small thing - I missed the cake :)
I honestly don't know where to start with my review apart from that I absolutely loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it.
Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams has got to be one of the most uplifting books I've read in a while. Through the main character Laura, there is a strong message that she and the readers learn that it doesn't matter how old you are never ever give up on your dreams.
With chapter titles such as 'Slut Dropping Zumba Queen and Someone Else's Leggings' and 'The Fine Tart of Sexting' I knew I was going to enjoy this book.
Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams is a fantastically sweet, funny and a slightly emotional read. Sue Watson has created a wonderful story and characters which were a joy to read. Some of the scenarios that Laura finds herself in I think most readers will find themselves being able to relate to her and I love how the author has kept it very realistic, especially with Laura's love life.
You have to love Laura's character, I could very much see a lot of myself in her and by the end I felt like she was my best friend. Another character I loved is Tony. Everyone and I mean everyone needs a Tony in their lives. For me he is very much Laura's fairy godmother, the bond that he and Laura have is just fabulous and I am so jealous of it! I want a Tony!
A definite must read that will bring happiness and sparkle into your life.
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
With every book that I read of Sue Watson's I become more and more impressed by her sheer storytelling talent. Each book is an improvement on the last and they are all pretty spectacular to start with...and Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams is no exception.
Laura is a 44 year old single mother, who is at the start of an amazing journey. During this book we see her start as a worker in a supermarket, doing the same thing each day, with Strictly Come Dancing being the highlight of her week, and she transforms herself into so much more.
And it all starts after she has one embarrassing fall at a Zumba class (taken in order to enhance her life), Tony Hernandez enters her life and he can see from the bad Zumba, that she has the potential to be a ballroom dancer. And you see from that first dance lesson the most amazing connection between Tony and Laura, as well as some natural talent and enthusiasm for dancing.
The transformation the Laura makes in her life is inspirational, to go from overweight, unfit, not overly confident in any parts of her life, to the woman who is offered the chance to go to Spain, to learn Flamenco, and then after that trip, into Lola. I honestly wish I had half her talent to try and do it myself.
There is a clear passion for ballroom dancing in this book, both Laura and Tony love it, and even if you aren't a fan, or know much about it won't affect your enjoyment of this book. Their enthusiasm for dancing will carry you along, until you can see it all very clearly in your mind, I could almost hear the music.
This may sound odd given how much of the story is based around the Flamenco, but its the one thing about Spain that I personally am not a fan of, but the trip to Granada, the home of Flamenco has almost made me think I should give it another chance, next time I'm in Spain. And the passion that is invoked in the part of the book set in Spain is sizzling. Romantic tension, dancing, tapas and sun, the best factors for a trip to Spain.
I was swept away with this story, there are some fantastic side characters, but Tony and Laura were definitely my favourites. Tony is everything you would want in a dance teacher and more, and the deepening friendship between him and Laura is fabulous to watch. It was almost love at first sight, well it was in terms of dance partnerships at any rate.
Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams had me reading it with a huge grin on my face, laughing along with some of the scenes and by the end I was welling up with tears of pure joy, especially due to the emotion during the final few scenes.
Read this book now, or keep it for your next holiday to read on the plane to put you in a great upbeat mood, or even by the pool/beach. This is a fantastic summer read, which I be happily recommending to anyone.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Bookoutre for allowing me the honour of reviewing this book. This was my honest review and opinion.
I want to just say Fantastic, loved it. And leave it at that. lol.
But I can't. But I did. lol.. I started reading this pretty much as soon as I down loaded it. I had read 2 of sue's other books. Love Lies and Lemon cakes. And Snow Angels, Secrets and Christmas Cakes and bloody loved both of them. So when I got the heads up this was available on Netgalley I raced in to request it. And I started it while cooking tea, I can honestly say I don't think i've stood at the oven grinning and laughing for well,,, never lol.
Smiling before you get to the end of the first page, you just know it's going to be one of those books that you can't help enjoy and laugh out loud at. Sue just seems to have this way of making you feel good while reading one of her books, the books just seem real, like they are everyday people that you know, in everyday situations that you can relate to. The humor through her books is fantastic. Really big grin readers. (if that makes seance) lots of laugh out loud moments.
Having worked her Arse off and saving for her daughters wedding. which didn't end up taking place as planned, Laura is back to working in her boring supermarket job, wanting to lose weight but not wanting to do anything about it. Laura is left do all the mundane day to day things, and dreaming while doing it. She decides to go to Zumba class with her mate Carole. Which turns out to be not for her. But oh so funny for you reading it. After the disastrous Zumba class, she bumps into Tony, who persuades her to join his dance class. This is pretty much where Laura's life changes. And boy does it change. This is one of those stories that makes you think. I can change things if I want to. I'm sure reading this book it will give many women the courage to do what it is they have always dreamed of doing, you just need to get off your Arse and aim for the stars. And that is what Laura set's off to do. Read the book and follow Laura on a life changing journey of ups and downs, and round and rounds. lol.
Just brilliant. Can't Praise these books enough. If you want to smile, then read them.
This book really has everything- laughter, fulfilling dreams, sexy strangers in exotic gorgeous settings, friendships and pretty dresses!
Laura has been a single mum and after her daughter goes travelling she thinks it’s time to spread her own wings a bit. Her friend persuades her to go to a Zumba class and lends her the clothes- which split embarrassingly and produce such a funny scene.
One of the onlookers laughing is actually taking ballroom dancing lessons and they decide to give that a whirl aswell. She spent her youth travelling the ballroom scene with her parents and it’s sunk into her blood. Tony is a great character and they quickly become strong friends.
She goes to a flamenco school in Grenada and you can smell the flowers and imagine the dancing right in front of your eyes. I’d love to go! She meets Juan and he’s a sexy local who adds plenty of romance and the ‘summer fling’ to her time in Grenada.
The first book I’ve ever read that mentions the village I was born in (Wythall) and the one I went to school in- Hollywood.
I really didn’t want this one to end- I was totally immersed in it- travelling along to Blackpool with them. When is your next book due out, Sue? With many thanks to Bookoutre and Net Galley for the chance to read this wonderful gem.
A total 5* read for me- and would love to read this sat round a pool or on a beach listening to the waves crashing on the shore!
Sue Watson does it again! A beautiful, feel-good, heartfelt read that had me laughing out loud and falling in love with her amazing characters who are all so very real and relatable. Loved this wonderful story and did not want it to end. I will be reading all of Sue Watson's wonderful books again as they are so much more than just stories: they make readers feel alive, feel good about themselves, they urge us to appreciate and enjoy life. I, for one, cannot wait for this amazing and incredibly talented author's next book.
4.5 Stars: Laura Watkins is your average divorcee who is working to make ends meet and raising her daughter Sophie, while also assisting her mother as she transitions into life without her partner. Laura loved her dad and still misses him terribly. Her daughter is dealing with her own turmoil as her marriage was called off at the last minute and now she is off traveling in Europe. Laura realizes that she has nothing much to enjoy about her life. She works all day and comes home to watch television, her favourite show, Strictly Come Dancing, which reminds her of her parents and their ballroom dancing days. It is time for a change, so she attends a zumba class with her friend, which ends up in a disaster. Laura ends up on the floor in front of handsome dance instructor, Tony Hernandez, which starts the changes that bring Laura out of her funk and into a whole new world.
This was a fun story about grabbing life, taking chances, following dreams, challenging your own expectations and doubts, family relationships and dance. The characters were well developed with their own challenges and pasts which made them more real to me. Laura was full of reservations and self-doubt based upon her past and what others had told her. I loved how Tony was able to get her to see she was so much more. Her slowly helped her to self-reflect and see that she could do what she set her mind to. It wasn't easy sailing by any means, but she kept at it. As she began to enjoy life a bit more, she also gets her mother to open up and see glimpses of her past as well. As the relationship between Laura and her mom changes, it reveals secrets which left me smiling. This is an uplifting and encouraging story to show people that if you take a chance on life and dreams, your path may take you places you never expected. One other issue I want to mention is homophobia. There is a situation that my be difficult for some to read, although it is not described, but the result of the incident impacts the story. Overall, this is an uplifting story with humour, dance, relationships, secrets and a great ending to wrap everything up in a wonderful story. I recommend this one to those who enjoy up-lit, women's fiction and what happens when you take the chance and grab hold of opportunities. The audiobook was narrated by Mary Woodvine who does a great job with the story. She gave voice to the various characters, with accents, tone and expression. This is the first time I have listened to her perform an audiobook and will not hesitate to listen to her again. I enjoyed listening to this one and recommend it to those who enjoy listening to their stories.
Name of Book: Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams Author: Sue Watson Audiobook Narrator: Mary Woodvine Publisher: Saga Egmont Audio Genre: Chick Lit Pub Date: July 12, 2022 My Rating: 3
This is my third Sue Watson. I absolutely loved the other two The Resort and The New Wife. I am a big fan of psychological thrillers ~ love stories a bit on the dark side.
This was first published in 2015. I didn’t do my homework, I was attracted to this because I love both the author and I love to dance! However this story isn’t a thriller, it starts with Laura Watkins our propagandist and mum of Laura (the bride to be who has been left at the altar) ~ more than upset about the cancelled wedding drops an f-bomb; I thought oops this just may not work for me! I have a low tolerance for profanity but thankfully there was not a lot of nasty language in this story.
Story centers on Laura who has devoted her life to her daughter’s happiness (who is now off traveling) is watching ‘ Strictly Come Dancing’ with a glass of Pinot Grigio and decided she is going to do something for herself and is going be back into dancing. Her parents were avid dancers and dancing was an important part of her life. She decided to first take dance classes and when she ends up with gorgeous dance instructor Tony Hernandez things get interesting.
The titles of the chapters are humorous but I prefer Sue Watson’s dark side!
Want to thank NetGalley and Saga Edmont Audio for this Audio eGalley! This file has been made available to me before the audio publication date. Audiobook Publishing Date scheduled for July 12, 2022
I laughed and cried. All the emotions in the book. Who doesn’t dream of dancing like no one else watching and doing a wonderful show at the same time?.With the partner you trust, it’s the perfect combination. Perfect friendship. Such a glorious union, a dance dream. And all feelings, from bad to the right decisions, from rational to irrational. Just go with the flow and do your best. The present and the past can bring the a great future?
Thank you Saga Edgmond Audio and Netgalley for this alc.
I always hear so many lovely things about Sue Watson so naturally I was very eager to sample her latest book Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams. It is also my first read from this author as well as the first book I've read (EVER) about a dancing theme! So I dived into the world of dancing steps, tulle, taffeta and ballroom competitions.
When we first meet Laura, her life is pretty much ALL about her grown up daughter Sophie, her elderly mother and the dreaded job as a check out chick at the local supermarket. Though Laura gets her little kick from a weekly dose of Strictly Come Dancing episodes, she thinks, her life is safe, quiet and happy but when her daughter gets ditched on her wedding day, Laura gets to hear the truth. Sophie actually finds her mothers life "little and boring". That is quite hurtful! Sophie recovers form her wedding fiasco, packs her life and leaves home for a new horizons. Laura starts to question her future and decides that it may just be time to shoot for the moon and catch a few glittering stars of her own. After an unsuccessful and very embarrassing Zumba class, Laura meets a charming dancer Tony who offers to teach her ballroom dancing. Very reluctantly Laura agrees.
I was captivated by this story from the very beginning( although I must say I can't dance apart of a few wiggly moves) I was right there with Laura as she learn how to become more self confident, stronger and determined person believing in herself and changing her life for better. As the story progressed we learn a lot about Laura's past, her nonexistent love life as a single mother but more importantly we find out why Laura's parents ( both professional dancers) never taught their own daughter the dancing steps.
After Laura's beloved father left, Laura's happy ( little bit gypsy) childhood came crashing down, her mother had retreated, became very bitter and never wanted to dance again. I must say I wasn't very taking by Margaret, Laura's mother. She seemed to constantly put Laura down but as I discovered the reason behind her strange behavior; I finally understood just how heart breaking it must have been for both of them, especially for Margaret, to change their life so drastically.
They say dancing is a form of therapy healing and releasing your life stresses and Laura did just that. After all it has been in her blood all her life! Laura just needed a little push and an encouragement. It just happened that Tony was in the right place and at the right time. I loved watching Laura/Lola and Tony's friendship developing into something quite extraordinary. Dancing was their way of life and a form of happiness. Tony was such a lovable character, a true friend and rather charismatic dancer. I also enjoyed the way Laura wanted to impress her daughter Sophie, dipping her toes in sexing and finding herself a sizzling Spanish fling. There was a bit of rebellious side to Laura after all!
Sue's description of Granada, the birth place of Flamenco was absolutely stunning and so realistic and just what Laura/Lola needed. I won't write more, it would just spoil the story!
Learning the waltz, tango and flamenco not only transformed Laura's body but her life as well. It was very inspiring, uplifting and a hilarious story. Absolute book gem!
A huge thank you to Kim from Bookouture for approving my request ( via NetGalley) to review Summer Flings and dancing Dreams.
Laura isn't living the life of her dreams, the highlight of her existence is watching Strictly Come Dancing by herself on a Saturday night. She knows all the steps as during her childhood she'd seen her parents do them numerous times, but she's never danced herself. Laura's daughter Sophie is heartbroken and needs a change, so she's going to travel and that will mean Laura will be home alone without much to look forward to. That's why Laura drags herself to a Zumba class together with her workmate. Zumba isn't her thing, but the next class of the evening is all about dancing and Tony, the instructor, invites Laura to join them. Will this give her a second chance at living, so she can finally do something she loves?
Tony inspires Laura to come out of her shell and she discovers she has a talent. Tony even enters them to perform in Blackpool, but Laura has just started dancing. Will she be ready and will she be confident enough to dance for so many people? An unexpected trip to Spain might teach Laura some moves and maybe she can find herself while she's there. Tony told Laura to dance like nobody's watching, but can she really do it?
Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams is a wonderful story about a fantastic topic, you're never too old to follow your dreams. Laura is in her forties. She's just existing and living is something for other people. While she's passionate inside she doesn't have an outlet. She's living through her daughter and through celebrities who are doing what she's always wanted. Tony is her voice of wisdom, a new best friend and exactly the person she needs. I love that Sue Watson writes about women who finally start living when they aren't so young anymore. I like that she doesn't only give her readers an entertaining story, she also shows them that when they aren't happy and fulfilled something can be done and it's never too late to do it.
Sue Watson has a fabulous sense of humor. Her main characters aren't perfect, they mess up like regular human beings, which makes her stories feel realistic. It's fun to laugh about something that could have happened to someone we know or maybe even ourselves. Her books have a lovely lightness while she does write about sensitive and emotional topics. I love that balance, especially since Sue Watson knows exactly how to maintain it.
Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams isn't a standard romance. Sue Watson kept surprising me with her many interesting twists and turns. The ending is fitting and again contains a useful and very true message. Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams is filled with beautiful dances, gracious moves, gorgeous dresses, sequins and passion. It's a versatile and very special story. It's dazzling and sparkling and incredibly hopeful.

And our favourite queen of romcom did it again. After that delicious lemon cake in her previous book, there is no danger for your weight this time, I’m afraid. Only for your hips! Because, this time, Sue Watson takes you to the ballroom, to the stage, to Spain, to the ultimate dance through the life!
Meet Laura. The mother of the bride. A single mother who has devoted her life to her only daughter and widowed mother. A woman who works in a supermarket by day and dreams about dancing at night. A woman who has spent so many extra hours at work so she can pay off her daughter’s wedding. But Laura decides to do something more than watching „Strictly Come Dancing“ on TV on Saturday night. She accepts her BFF Carole’s offer for Zumba lessons. As she finds out, Zumba is not really her thing, but there she meets Tony, who teaches dancing lessons. He reminds her of her father, so she gives his lessons a try. And so the journey begins.
From the very first moment, Tony becomes her gay best friend. He is always there, to push her to the limits, to watch the dancing shows with her, to listen when she talks, to tell her „Yes, you can“ when she says „I can’t“. With his dancing lessons he brings her back into the childhood when she was watching her parents dancing in the ballroom.
With every dancing lesson Laura becomes Lola, the dancing queen, a mature and confident woman who lives her life to the fullest, not just being a wallflower. Her passion for dancing takes her on a journey to Spain into the arms of a Latin lover. It takes her right in the ballroom where her parents were dancing, but mostly it teaches her a valuable lesson, to love herself and dance like nobody is watching.
Ms. Watson wouldn’t be our favourite romcom queen without her unique writing style and laugh-out-loud moments. I was reading alone in my yard and laughed so loud that my neighbour who was cutting the grass in his yard, stopped the machine and looked at me, all puzzled. Me, alone, laughing! I’ve must have looked very weird. Booknerds like me will understand me, though.
So, take a bottle of sangria, not a glass, a bottle, and let Lola take you on the dancefloor. You don’t need dancing shoes, barefoot will be just fine. Move your hips and you’ll forget all your problems. And with a friend like Tony, you can reach the stars. Just believe in yourself, and dance like nobody is watching! Enjoy this wonderful book!
Sue Watson has quickly become a new favourite author for me since last summer, and I was over the moon when I heard of her upcoming release, and couldn’t wait to get my grubby little hands on it.
Laura is 44, and it’s safe to say that her life has fallen into a bit of a slump, so she allows herself to be coerced into attending a Zumba class. Shortly after class beginning, it’s quite clear that Laura has made a desperate mistake, but her natural rhythm does not go unnoticed by Ballroom instructor Tony Hernandez. For the second time, Laura allows herself to be convinced of attending a new class, but this time her natural skills – and the chemistry between her and Tony on the dance floor – are undeniable.
Soon, Laura discovers in herself a passion that she’d long ago let die, and is offered a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to fulfil her father’s dream of learning flamenco in Spain.
Honestly, throughout this entire book, my heart just SOARED for Laura. I loved her: firstly, in all her Strictly-loving, legging-wearing, ridiculousness, and then I loved her even more in her Flamenco-dancing, life-living AWESOMENESS. You really watch Laura come alive throughout this book, and I found myself begging her to have the courage to face her demons and take a chance!
I also have to give honourable mention to Tony, who was such a babe and I wish I had him in my life!
Sue’s books are just down-right guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, but even more so, they seem to be getting better and better. This was just one of those books that really crept up inside my heart and soul, making my jaws ache from smiling as I raced through each page, egging Laura on. Ultimately, it’s a story about taking the chance to make your dreams come true, which is something I think we can all relate to, and I think it can bring out the dreamer in all of us – it definitely had me aching to go dig out my pointe shoes and practise my dancing again.
Yet another superb book from Sue Watson, which you would be a fool to miss out on this summer!
This was such a glorious, fun filled, sparkly read to make you feel you are beautiful and capable of anything.
Laura is a single parent who is awoken from her everyday life by a remark from her daughter. Laura decides to join her friend in a zumba class, to make a change from her usual night in at home watching TV. The zumba class scene is a reading moment I won’t forget in a long time. Brilliant writing by Sue Watson. This scene was so funny but also it was quite sensitive to the situation. During the eventful zumba class Laura was being watched by Tony Hernandez, the Ballroom Dance teacher from the next class. Tony approached Laura after her zumba class and suggested she try out for the ballroom class as he could see some potential in her. An unlikely friendship was formed between Laura and Tony. I adored Tony’s character. He was so joyous to be around, everyone needs a Tony.
The story follows Laura and Tony’s growing friendship and their desire to dance. They have some highs and lows along the way but Tony has so much faith in Laura’s capabilities its heartwarming to read.
During all the dancing frivolities there is a sadness woven subtly in the background. This grief and sadness has been with Laura for a long time and events accumulate to give Laura a better understanding to the past which gives her so much inspiration and hope for the future.
Another successful story from Sue Watson. Her books are so witty with fun filled believable characters. A fabulous sparkly 5/5* read.
Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams is a light-hearted, funny and touching novel that is exactly what one would love for a summer beach (or any other time of the year) read.
The story centers on Laura Watkins, a divorcee who's life centers around working, caring for her daughter and watching Strictly Come Dancing. Realizing she needs to do something to break the cycle, she decides she needs a change like taking a Zumba class which leads to so much more.
With the help of Tony Hernandez, a dance instructor who encourages Laura to take his class, Laura enters the world of Flamenco and her life changes in the most inspiring and extraordinary way.
You'll love reading Laura's journey, smile and laugh, and cheer her on as she shows that it never is to late to do something for yourself, change your life, and make your dreams come true.
Overall, this was a great novel that I definitely recommend and I can't wait to read more from Ms. Watson.
(Thanks to Sue Watson, Bookouture, and NetGalley for a chance to read an ARC of Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams for an honest review.)
What an amazing book! I didn't know quite what to expect but had no idea I would become so involved within a few pages! Laura had had a boring life and she suddenly has the opportunity to brighten it up. Instead of merely watching Strictly, and enjoying the programme, she finds herself learning to dance. What a journey she goes on! I so admired her courage and daring as she ventures out into the world with Tony's support. Tony is not the traditional hero but you'll have to read it to find out what I mean! The trip to Spain was amazing for Laura - it could so easily have turned into a disaster, but by then she had the confidence not to allow that to happen. A book about new beginnings, old demons and a complete change of attitude. Perfect reading for all women!

The story was good, but the writing left something to be desired. The author kept repeating the same things over and over to the point that I felt like screaming, "I get it!". Also, the grammar was atrocious. I don't know if this is just in the Kindle edition or what, but completely unacceptable! This book was edited????????
I really enjoyed this book. Laura is a highly likeable and relatable middle-aged woman whose life is stuck in a rut. She has a job which she is tired of, a daughter who has left home to discover the world, and a hard-of-hearing mother who recently moved into a retirement community.
When a friend invites her to a Zumba class, a calamity of incidents occurs. She also meets dance teacher Tony who invites her to take one of his dance classes. Laura has always enjoyed dance and remembers fondly when her parents entered dance competitions. But that was before the accident that changed everything. Nevertheless, Laura wants to make a change in her life and so takes Tony’s class.
Laura not only enjoys Tony’s class but really does well in it. He invites her to be his partner, and soon the two are entering local competitions. As her dancing prowess increases, Laura gains confidence in all areas of her life. A trip to Spain to learn flamenco has Laura (and her alter-ego Lola) has finding romance, and an even stronger passion for dance. The reader is treated to a vacation in Spain with a discussion of the culture, food and wine of the country. I loved it.
I love a story where the protagonist has such strong personal growth. As many of us reach middle age, we start to reflect upon our lives thus far and what we want to change to make us more fulfilled. Laura takes that leap of faith and creates a life outside of what she had always known.
Tony’s character also experiences change throughout the book. Laura and Tony bring out the best in one another – signs of a true friendship. There is a discussion of homophobia in this book and Tony is physically hurt at one point in the story. The author writes this with respect and empathy which I appreciated.
I listened to the audiobook version of Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams which was narrated by Mary Woodvine. Her performance was easy to listen to and full of enthusiasm and age-appropriate for Laura’s character. I have no hesitation in recommending the audiobook to those that enjoy this format.
I received an ARC of the audiobook from the publisher in exchange for the honest review provided here.
This is only the second book by Sue Watson that I've read, but I'm growing more and more very fond of the author herself and of her down - to - earth, very realistic writing. What I so love in Sue's books is the fact that she's writing about normal women, not long - legged bimbos for whom everything comes so easily, no, but about women who had a past, who experienced a lot and for whom it's really hard to live the life they want, and about women who, eventually, pluck up their courage to follow their dreams, and I SO love stories about women who decide to quit their dull jobs and not be afraid to start something totally different, something that finally brings them joy.
This time the main character, Laura, is 44 years old, mother of an adult daughter who's let slip in one of their conversations that she thinks her mother's life is Boring. Yes. With capital B. Of course this makes Laura think, and this, together with a coincidence, takes us on a fantastic, uplifting, optimistic journey with Laura, and we are able to see how much she's changing, blossoming and developing. Laura loves dancing, she always loved it, watching her parents taking parts in dance competitions so yes, to say that dancing is in her blood would be only right. Unfortunately, life is life and Laura is now spending her days in a boring job and dancing is the last thing on her mind. Until one day when she finds herself, together with her friend, at a Zumba class. Very memorable Zumba class, I'd say. For Laura. And her tight leggings.
So when Laura starts taking dancing lessons, we really see how her world is starting to change. Not immediately, of course not, and at the beginning she's still full of reservations, uncertainty - and not only about dancing. We accompany her on her journey of coming out of her shell and it was adorable journey - not an easy one, full of some sad moments, but also full of those much more enjoyable ones, new friends, and finding peace. It's a real transformation, from an overweight, boring, full of complexes Laura to sporty, finding courage for a single trip to Spain to learn Flamenco, Lola. The story is full of LOL moments, of heart - lifting moments, but also of moments that were, in my eyes, too long, with a very detailed descriptions that I, personally, could live without, and when I was waiting for something to finally happen and when I was feeling that just a second ago I've read about the same. But this is my only one "but" and other than that, it was a perfect, optimistic and uplifting read.
The love and enthusiasm to dancing shine through all the pages, and Laura and Tony are the best ambassador of ballroom dancing, really. I wouldn't be surprised if all of the readers of this book will start, if not dancing, than any other hobby that is buried somewhere, forgotten, so inspiring is this novel. Really. I feel like taking riding lessons again.
As for the characters, they are so well written! They have lives of their own and they feel so realistic and genuine, and to find such a friend as Tony, a girl must have be a lucky one! The friendship that developed between Laura and Tony was the highlight of the book and it felt so incredibly genuine and natural.
Also, the descriptions in this book are just bombastic, especially those of dancing, Flamenco and Granada. I may like to watch Strictly Come Dancing or something similar from time to time, but am not such a big fan of dancing, or Flamenco in particular, but Sue Watson has put probably her whole heart, feelings and blood into describing it, and she's really done it excellently. There is passion, there is fire, there are feelings to this particular part of the book.
Overall, "Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams" is a very emotional yet very light and funny novel that I read with a smile, or dropped few tears. It has all that you can look for in a perfect summer read: friendship, betrayal, dance, drama and hope. A very uplifting read about discovering yourself again and afresh, about mother - daughter relationships, with a great dose of humour, beautiful descriptions and down - to - earth characters. My guess is that Sue wanted to show us that there is never too late to pursue your dreams, to learn and that you can start, whatever you want, no matter how old you are and what a life baggage you carry.

Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams is a classic Sue Watson novel filled with love, laughter and…a happily ever after? It was a beautifully entertaining story about embracing your passion, chasing your dreams and living life to the fullest.
Single mother Laura just wasted away her extremely hard-earned money on her daughter’s disastrous wedding that didn’t end with a marriage. Her young daughter Sophie was stood up at the altar by her fiancé who turned out to be a no-show. Although Sophie’s fiancé-to-be’s family was well-off, Laura was too proud to allow them to pay for the wedding and thus, worked her butt off to save the money that was needed for a lavish wedding for their 500 guests.
Laura’s entire life has been dedicated to trying to give her daughter a better life. She’s worked herself to the bone at her check-out job to try to give her daughter the life she herself would never have. Once Sophie leaves to travel in an attempt to mend her broken heart, Laura realized that she’s become bored with her life. After what happened with Sophie’s father in the past, she believes that she was meant to end up alone and that the chance for a fun life filled with love and laughter has already passed her by. The only fun thing to look forward to in her life is a show called Strictly Come Dancing, which is a dance show contest, as she particularly loves watching the Latin dancing.
Not only has Laura become bored with her life, she meets disapproval from all of the people in her life. She continues to visit her mother in a ‘retirement apartment’ and yet her mother still gives her a hard time about her weight, her pathetic job, and not having a man in her life. Soon enough, Laura is making changes in her life and allowing herself to do the things that make her happy, rather than focusing her entire purpose in life on making others happy.
One of the main themes of the novel is money and the hardships that come with not having enough of it. The desire to have financial freedom can be an ever-present ideology for someone that lacks that freedom but desires a bigger life than they can afford. Sometimes there’s comfort in having a small, safe life but it can lead to feeling like there’s no purpose to your existence. Is being happy enough, is it good enough if you’re not reaching beyond your simple life? ‘Life often gives you what you just what you need, even if you don’t realize it at the time.’
Laura finally begins to grow into herself and begins to feel liberated and free to live her life on her terms. She begins to put herself first and stops worrying so much about how everyone else will manage. I cheered for her as she began to make life-changing self discoveries and whooped along as she immersed herself in her dancing.
5 stars for this absolutely wonderful, lively novel
Forty-four-year-old Laura is stuck in a rut; her life mainly consists of her boring job at the local supermarket and evenings in watching Strictly Come Dancing with a large glass of wine. When Laura's daughter Sophie is dumped by her fiancee on her wedding day, she decides to go travel around the world to mend her broken heart. Leaving Laura behind with a lot of free time and the urgent message from her daughter to take the chance to finally make a change in her life. Unexpectedly, that change isn't too far away when Laura takes a step into the world of ballroom dancing when she meets dance teacher Tony Hernandez. Tony knows how to bring out Laura's natural talent for dancing, and before Laura knows it, her life is turned upside down, but can Laura really leave the old her behind and grant herself this new start?
Sue Watson's lovely feel-good novels never disappoint and that is also the case for 'Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams.' Considering the popularity of TV show 'Strictly Come Dancing', this novel deals with a great topic in the form of ballroom dancing; an aspect of the book which many readers, including me, will love. Combined with a wonderful group of characters and a captivating storyline, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and had a smile on my face while I was flying through the pages. Sue Watson's writing style is a true joy to read (it made me laugh out lod more than once) and I was already taken in by the story from the first chapter, that deals with Laura's daughter having been jilted on her wedding day.
The mother-daughter relationship between Laura and Sophie was wonderful and I loved seeing them deal with the things happening in their lives and taking care of each other. Sue Watson's novels always have a significant message at their core, like the importance of not giving up on your dreams, finding happiness, and staying true to yourself. This is also the case in this novel and I think Laura is not just a warm and relatable protagonist, but also an inspiring one to many readers. Overall, 'Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams' is an uplifting, light, funny women's fiction read that made me want to put on my dancing shoes and kept a permanent smile on my face... A stunning read and I already can't wait to see what Sue has in store for us next!
This book is about Laura Who is a single mum of a grown up girl that she has done her very best to bring up she also has a mum in an old persons home who seems to have very little time for her daughter. After being stood up at the altar Sophie, Laura’s daughter is off travelling the world leaving her mum with something she said after the non-wedding playing on her mind. Laura has a very low opinion of herself and after some persuasion by a friend decides to give Zumba a go (after all it is a form of dance and she comes from a dancing background). Things in the class do not go as planned (another great laugh out loud piece of writing) then she is approached by the gorgeous Tony Hernandez (Griffiths) who asks her to stay on to his new dance class. This is where her new life begins with finding that after all she can dance amazingly and forming new friends.
The book is such a great easy feel good read which had me laughing throughout. I loved the Sexting mishap and was trying not to wake my husband up by laughing out loud. The relationship between Laura and Tony is fantastic and I loved how Tony managed to bring Laura alive and make her a strong independent person who towards the end is outgoing. You cannot but like the character of Laura and want what is best for her.
You are left wondering throughout the book what happened to Laura’s Father when he was dancing at the famous Blackpool tower. Her mother is aloof and you feel like she is constantly judging Laura I disliked the fact that she would make snide comments about Laura however towards the end of the book you discover why and realise that her mum does really love her.
I loved the description of the dresses and the dances in the book and as a strictly come dancing enthusiast I like to imagine myself whizzing around doing the spectacular dances. Mind you I don’t think I would get very far as more a case of cant dance than wont dance but every girl has to have her dream.
This book is a great read for the summer or winter and any time you need cheering up.
Sophie was devastated after her husband to be sent a text calling off their wedding just as she arrived at the church for the ceremony. Having brought up her daughter,, as a single Mum, Laura Watkin’s is dismayed by the news but is even more shocked to hear how Sophie is determined to get out an live rather than end up like her Mum. This makes Laura reevaluate her life, especially when Sophie goes off to travel the world. Laura knows it is time for her to change her life and that, as a forty-four year old, she needs to do so sooner rather than later. Read this delightful book to find out how her parents’ love of dancing, an inspiring teacher and innate talent help give Laura to make changes for herself - with a few wobbles and giggles along the way!
With well defined characters, a complicated past to discover and future to dream about this is an inspiring, funny story to encourage everyone to make the most of life’s opportunities. It has lots of humour, sexy strangers, a dreadful supermarket and surprises galore - you’ll just have to read it yourself to find out what happens - then be courageous and make sure you also live life to the full!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley too, for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Summer Flings and Dancing Dreams is one of those stories that you simply need to read. The description of this novel does not do it justice. Just sayin’.
At some point in life, a single parent who has raised their child and set them free upon the world just has to say…. my time now. This is such a fun story of a woman stepping out and going for the things that she needs in her life. Nothing too crazy, just the chance to step out there and try something totally different from her usual life. You never know how much you can grow from taking just one risk. Or what the world will open up for you if you just for once say “yes.”
This novel will cause serious laughter, a few belly laughs, possible snorting and an overall feeling of happiness and enjoyment. You deserve this fun, charming and enjoyable novel – you really do. Pick it up, sit back and indulge yourself in laughter and knowing that life, at any age, is a fun adventure.

After her daughter's wedding is cancelled and she is told by her daughter that she doesn't want to end up leading a life like hers, Laura has had enough of her boring everyday life. By starting to say "yes" to things, Laura ends up doing Zumba and learning what a "pelvic floor" is... Zumba isn't quite cut out for Laura, but the sequins and love of the glitterball may well run in the family. Tony the sexy dance instructor can change everything for Laura and a trip to learn flamenco could change Laura for good...
Oh this was a refreshing read. I love Sue Watson's sense of humour, it's brilliant. The chapter titles are witty and entertaining and some of Laura and Tony's outbursts are downright hilarious. Thoroughly enjoyable read!
What a fun, fesity, laugh-out-loud treat of a book! Although a minor character, I found Mandy, the 'torture chamber' beautician particularly hilarious and her exploits on occasion made me laugh so hard my sides hurt. I loved the settings of the West Midlands as well as Granada (a place very close to my heart) and enjoyed following the journey of the uninspired protagonist as she transforms from repressed, low-confidence Laura to passionate, gutsy dancer, Lola. On this special journey, she can finally confront and let go the ghosts of her past and find that potent power that she inherited and was inside her all along, simply waiting to be released. Well done Sue Watson, ole!
What a wonderful, flirty, funny, girl power , life affirming book! I loved Laura or Lola and could really identify with how watching Strictly sent her into dreams of dancing and glitter - because I feel the same way. I love that she finds the man of her dreams - but not in a conventional sense, and her Spanish fling was quite saucy really but I very much enjoyed the 'revenge moment' that followed it. This book made me smile and left me feeling happy and you can't really ask for much more than that.

I really enjoyed this book, funny, uplifting and didn't take itself too seriously. Hilariously silly chapter titles and a sense of fun meant this book flew by! A perfect holiday read or when you just want an uplifting book to change the mood. Highly recommended!!
I will be looking out for more from this author.
