Meanwhile, back at the castle . . . Minalan the Spellmonger faces the boredom of house arrest after being confined to his lands by Prince Tavard for his defiance with the Wilderlands refugees. The Alka Alon have returned to their seclusion, dealing with their own crisis, the Dead God is being quiet within the Umbra, and Min’s plans toward re-establishing a functional Duchy of Alshar are progressing.
Min sees his punishment as a unique opportunity to indulge in thaumaturgical research. When the Sevendor Magic Fair brings a tide of enchanters eager for snowstone, irionite, and opportunity to his door (as well as the newly-formed Arcane Knights of Nablus, the successors of the Censorate in Merwyn), Minalan uses his wealth and position to invite them to stay on in Sevendor over the winter and focus on the developing art of Enchantment.
He forms the first Bouleuterion, a conclave of enchanters dedicated to producing and researching the creation of magical items, since the fall of the Magocracy. Such notable enchanters as Lanse of Bune, Taren, and Masters Andalnam and Cormoran arrive to help Minalan and his staff of experts push the frontiers of magical science as far as he can. Even Lorcus, Tyndal and Rondal help out. His secret mission is, of course, to fathom the complexities of the secret Snowflake of Sevendor, the enigmatic pseudo-molopor created from Minalan’s fevered subconscious . . . but not before they improve the lot of the peasantry by creating a wealth of labor-saving (and potentially socially revolutionary) devices.
But enchanters and former Censors are not the only ones to arrive at the fair: Baron and Baroness Greenflower, Magelords Dunselen and Isily, come to Sevendor as well . . . and the results are explosive. Before they depart Minalan’s entire life is thrown into doubt. Especially when a new divinity appears to make him an offer the Spellmonger just can’t refuse.
As Minalan works through his psychological issues by obsessively focusing on his craft, he must also nimbly maneuver his way around an inevitable war between Sendaria and Sashtalia, protect his vulnerable domains, deftly negotiate his course through the tangle of feudal law and obligation in the Bontal Vales, and contend with his troubled marriage.
His frustration, guilt, and doubt are soon revealed to be authored by a secret plot against him. The return of an old enemy and the revelation of new foes challenges his position as head of the Arcane Orders and puts his entire family in jeopardy. Could it be that Is Minalan’s new eleven-year-old apprentice, Ruderal, the only one capable of seeing through the deceptions in time to save them all even as he struggles with his own guilt about his role in releasing Korbal the undead Demon God from his tomb? Or will their fates lie on the whims of a former lover who has ambitions of her own for Minalan?
It’s hard for the Spellmonger to be forced to stay at home and quietly tend to his own business. But then Minalan never let such things impede his plans before . . . why would he now? With the Snowflake of Sevendor, a mighty cadre of powerful magi, some inspired vassals and the assistance of a few friendly gods, Minalan realizes that the only real way out of his personal mess may lie with an ancient intelligence of a long-extinct race . . . and his ability to become a master Enchanter!

He is also the author of a series of sequels to Golden Age sci-fi master H. Beam Piper's novel, Space Viking, as well as original sci-fi novels.
This book is my favorite next to Magelord in the series. Ending was different from the rest of the books in the series. It was good and exciting.
Only problem I faced was that the vocabulary was so difficult, I have to keep a dictionary with me all the time.
Terry, If you read my review, will you be dear and tell me if you will write a Novella about Ruderal's freedom and Rondal's engagement. I think there was an interesting story behind it. Last question, when you'll try to end this series, that is approximately how many books are left in the series.
I am eagerly waiting for the next book. It'll be exciting. Thank you Terry for this wonderful book.
I can't take it anymore. I don't know what's wrong with this author but something has to be. The idiot plot rears its ugly head over and over and over. Plot armor comes into play over and over and over. I genuinely hate this book.
Let's start with the fact that there is never any justice for any wrong doer. Not ever. Not once. Every single time someone is a killer or a murder of the innocent, or a torturer or a schemer in thrall to the enemy Minalan decides to let them go. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME. And every time he does it he has a new retarded reason for it.
Gurkesh is an enemy warlord made and slaver who enslaved some of his own people and is currently working for the largest enemy of humanity. We've undertaken this secret mission and we have his manse surrounded with more then enough war magi to kill him. But you know what. Instead of killing the guy who is giving the enemy extremely valuable information why don't we let him live and just go on our way. Why you ask? well duh, we made an oath so that he could serve us tea. DUMB DUMB DUMB
Then the mask. Don't even get me started. In his first encounter with her she tries to assail one of the new fortifications he's building. At this point he has her surrounded and has just come away from her estate where he has discovered that she MURDERS ENSLAVES AND CONDUCTS EXPERIMENTS ON INNOCENT HUMANS. He is in a land riven with the effects of the war the gurvani have brought and surrounded by people who were a hairs breath away from being enslaved. In one swoop he can kill over 1000 of them and there leader the mask. He even admits that he could do it but no. That would make to much sense. Instead he let's her go. Because that will "teach the enemy a lesson." Allowing an extremely dangerous and sophisticated enemy to live and do as she pleases. I wonder if that will come back to bite him in the ass? Oh wait look at that it does. Now she's trying to kill him with a trap at a castle he's conquering but ah. Finally the satisfaction. He gets grabbed by a giant bird and hurled hundreds of feet, finally he's defeated her. But no she's not dead. Here she is again at his own castle. SHE SOMEHOW MANAGED TO CHEAT CERTAIN DEATH. But don't worry he just defeated her in battle and is surely he's going to kill her. BUT NO INSTEAD HE PUTS HER TO SLEEP FOR NO FUCKING REASON WHATSOEVER NONE AT ALL IT LITTERALLY MAKES NO SENSE. Then wouldn't you know she wakes up and steals his staff. Lets recap this on character. She is one of his chief enemies who has killed and tortured thousands of his people and works for an enemy that seeks the entire genocide of the human race. When he has the chance to kill her in battle along with a sizable number of enemy troops he lets her and them go instead because DUHHHHHH. Then SHE GETS DROPPED HUNDREDS OF FEET FROM THE TALONS OF A BIRD THAT HAS PIERCED HER FLESH AND SHE'S PERFECTLY FINE. because well DUHHHHHHHH. THEN MINILAN DEFEATS HER IN COMBAT AND CAN KILL HER OUTRIGHT BUT INSTEAD DOESN'T FOR NO FUCKING REASON. Because DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH. It's fucking nonsensical and it happens over and over again.
The warbird killed a bunch of your people and has threatened to murder you and you've just stonel his doman. WHY DON'T I JUST LET HIM GO AND NOT TAKE A RANSOM.
Dundelsen is going crazy. He is literally going mad. You find out that he regularly rapes a bunch of his serfs and that he has conspired to purchase some of your extremely rare and dangerous snowstone under your nose. Ontop of that he is openly critical and toughts that fact that he would be far superion in your position. Ontop of that he comes to your magic fair and says that he should have control of your ironite. YEAH LETS JUST LET HIM KEEP HIS IRONITE EVEN THOUGH HIS INSANITY GIVES US EVERY JUSTIFICATION WE NEED TO TAKE IT AND THE CROWN APPROVES OF US UNDERMINING HIM. It would make to much sense to deprive an enemy of that resource.
He finds the guy who was illegally mining his snowstone and who had joined a band with the intention of burning its way through his domain FOR THE SECOND FUCKING TIME and killing him. This man meant to see him dead and openly touts the fact that he will never serve him. But no let's not kill him, let's not send him away. LETS LITERALLY GIVE HIM CONTROL OVER A DOMAIN THAT HOUSES THE SNOWSTONE THAT HE WAS JUST FUCKING SELLING TO THE SHAREUL AND DUNDELSEN. A DOMAIN THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE A NEW ORDER OF HONORABLE KNIGHTS. LET'S LITTERALLY GIVE THIS PERSON WHO IS YOUR CHIEF FUCKING ENEMY WHO POSSESES A DESIRE TO UNDERMINE YOU AND HAS PROVEN ADEPTS AT STEALING YOUR RESOURCE GAURDIANSHIP OVER THAT SAME FUCKING RESOURCE.
You know that an assasin who has tried to make you her slave who is in the employ or a nobility that is trying to find anyway to leverage you has plotted for you to have an illegitimate child that they can use to leverage you. You know where this childs name, you know how to get to her, you can have her whenever you please but you leave her at the hands of multiple sadistic women who will use her against you because DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. FUCKING IDIOTIC
And it's a million other things ranging from the main character constantly giving his main enemies way to much information and waving it away as(they might have found out anyway) to literally finding out that there is a FUCKING PLOT TO STEAL THE MAGICAL ITEMS FROM HIS DOMAIN AND LITERALLY TELLING FUCKING NO ONE. NOBODY. NOT A SINGLE FUCKING PERSON. MOST ESPECIALLY NOT THE WARMAGE IN HIS EMPLOY WHO CAN (if they knew about the threat) EASILY GAURD AGAINST SUCH THINGS.
Oh the assassin who raped me and tried to enslave my mind. I've managed to remove her enslavement from my mind and im completely free of it but in order to continue some ruse why don't I just tell her in exact and intricate detail exactly how I created snowstone. Why don't i just tell the ASSASIN WHO RAPED ME AND FORCED TO BABIES ON ME WHO IS ALSO MARRIED TO ONE OF MY BIGGEST DETRACTORS WHO IS ALSO TRYING TO UNDERMINE ME AND IS ALSO TRYING RESEARCH HOW I CREATED THIS EXTREMELY VALUABLE AND DANGEROUS RESOURCE. WHY DONT I DUHHHHHHHHHHHH JUST TELL THEM EXACTLY HOW I CREATED IT. FOR NO FUCKING REASON WHEN I CAN JUST LIE WHICH IS ALREADY WHAT IM DOING BY PRETENDING TO BE ENTHRALLED. This author is a fucking retard. IDIOT PLOT OVER AND OVER AND OVER. And literally not one enemy ever faces any punishment. Not a single one.
OH WE'VE BEEN FIGHTING THIS WAR AGAINST OUR PEOPLE TOOTH AND NAIL BARELY HOLDING BACK THE ENEMY. Our people are being enslaved and LOOK OUT OF NOWHERE THE PRINCE MANAGES TO UTTERLY ROUTE THE ENEMY INCLUDING ALL OF THERE GENERALS. SHOULD WE KILL THEM OR SHOULD WE DUHHHHHHHHHHH. LET THEM ALL FUCKING GO FOR NO FUCKING REASON OTHER THEN TO FURTHER THE DUMB ASS PLOTLINE.
WE HAVE THE ENTIRE ENEMY ARMY TRAPPED ON A LAKE AND THEY CAN'T SWIM. We have devised away to turn the Icy lake to water again under there feet. Should we just do that and kill them all or should we rush in and fight a pointless battle that would have been resolved with the spell anyway. Killing our people valiantly for no reason.
We just defended this ALKA ALON base. IT'S A BASE THAT'S STOOD FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND IS ONE OF THERE GREAT WONDERS. WE LITERALLY JUST KILLED 100,000 Members of the 105,000 member army assailing it. We still have the vast majority of our number. Should we hold the base thats stood for eons agianst 5000 or should we SURRENDER IT FOR NO FUCKING REASON. Should we have the other ALKA ALON TRIBES COME TO OUR AID NOW THAT THE SITUATION HAS CHANGED BUT NO THEY WON'T BECAUSE IT MAKE TOO MUCH FUCKING SENSE.
The kasari need to relocate there children. Something the Kasari can do with relative ease but they won't because well they just feel like sitting this one out. WHY? BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO MANY REFUGEES... too many alka alon. It's almost like some of them might have been useful since there were to many for them to know what to do with.
I can kill isily but i'll let her live because DUHHHH. I can take dundelsens stone but I'll let him keep it because DUHHHHH. I can kill all of the enemy generals in one fell swoop but i'll let them live with no concessions because DUHHHHHH. I have the torturer, enslaver and general along with a large contingent of her torturers and enslavers within my grasp and can wipe them out but I'll let them live because DUHHHHHH. I am going to give all of my enemies all of this specific and sensitive infornation they didn't even ask for because DUHHHHHHH. They have my kid but they can keep her because DUHHHHHHHHHH. I know there going to steal the artifacts but i won't warn anyone because DUHHHHHHHH.
There are a million and more I can't think and I hate this fucking book. I hate this fucking series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Honestly I think these books keep getting better. The twists keep getting wilder and the main characters story’s continue to evolve extremely satisfyingly. Might be the best in the series so far!
I'm sorry to say that I found this book very slow. Nearly painfully so. There were a couple spots where I found my suspension of disbelief tried. The Spellmonger has warning from many quarters, yet he still does not take adequate care to defend against theft. As smart as he is he can't see that a known gathering would be used to draw him and the majority of his domains magical defenses away. How many times must we allow someone to kill us before slaying them when we have the chance? Oh and let's compound that failure with leaving our best weapon laying on the floor next to his own severed head... Ops wrong book. On the floor after the fight with Mask to rush off to help defenders fighting in another location. .. Without our weapon.
Not going to leave a spoiler. In the author's blog he says there isn't a lot of action. I disagree there was plenty of action and the series is moved along with this story. I was geeking out on the first half as more of the magical world was explored. I appreciate that this series is taking time to explore the story while keeping the characters entertaining and real. I will admit this is one series that I would love to see get picked up by one of the audiobook publishers.
For the past year I've been hooked on the spellmonger series by Terry Mancour. Every book in the series is great and this one is no exception, so if you haven't read any of these books I would highly recommend them.
This book is a stunning continuation of the series!
Or alternatively BOOM!
Minalan has annoyed the nascent prince of Castalshar so suddenly he has time on his hands. There is very little happening in the Penumbra, so Minalan throws himself into research.
Naturally nothing ever goes smoothly for our intrepid ‘Spellmonger’ Magelord Minalan. He’s got enemies around every corner, a couple in particular who put him in impossible situations and wracked with guilt and grief. Probably a good job that the gods are paying attention, hopefully. Things come to a head with devastating results for all concerned.
Definitely read the short story after the book is finished it sheds a light on upcoming events.
This one is a heavy hitting book that gets you right in the feels. It’s also brimming with the terminology of magical research and the school of enchanting. Although I didn’t come across it until after the fact there is a glossary of terms. I’m going to have an incredible book hangover by the time I’m done because I’m reading the series back to back at a rapid pace, onwards and upwards to book 8 and hopefully good news.
This one took awhile to get hooked - it was slow but definitely picked up and was worthwhile in the last quarter. I think some might read this installment in the series and get frustrated with Min's behaviour (as a hardened and powerful mage now, he comes across as too merciful with his enemies, he is a bit clueless (he's usually one step ahead of them) and really dejected - which is so not him!) And yet the title of the book is Enchanter. Not only does Min use his time and resources to delve further into enchantment spells - but in this book he is effectively enchanted himself (negatively so) by his enemies and also his past actions/regrets- so it really makes sense to me. Ultimately his melancholy and inability to snap out of it even with the help of those he loves really has put him (and them) in a bad position. But now he has a greater challenge ahead - more enemies to face and the objective to save those he loves - on to the next one~!
This is a great addition to the series. We see some cool world building, new enchantments, new insights into humanities past, but... Minalin. Spoiler alert... . . . . . . . . . . He is just such a weak willed panzy in this story. Yes I understand he is merciful, but it's lile the author forgot that he is a hardened warmage who has killed hundreds of humans. He let's Ganulan live because of a little intelligence he provided. He should have at the least put him in the iron ring if he was going to spare his life, not stupidly let him go free with no shackles. He let's lady mask live. For Christ sake that woman is completely insane and full of hatred. And he let's Isily and dunselen live, not who want him out of power (in their own way) and he outs everything he has built at stake by ignoring it. Fix your MC Terry.
I found the first three quarters to be very slow. Lots of research and land maintenance. the last quarter was what i have become used to. Action and humour.
the plot is still moving along and the characters are still as good as ever. just took a very long time to get there from here if you know what i mean. a lot of indepth description of the new spells being learned and the components going into them. border line boring as far as i am concerned.
I really like the stories, and the world building has been fantastic, but there's something about the way sexual tension is written by this author, across the entire series, that feels misogynistic. But this book, with the way the history exposing scene between the spellmonger and his wife, seems to overdramatize the spellmongers emotional trauma, for the first time in 8 books showing his vulnerability, that feels disingenuous.
The stories and world building, awesome. The emotional and sexual misogyny, just feels wrong.
Another fabulous romp! Now, however, the stories are getting deeper and more difficult, as the Spellmonger increases the size of his holdings and his problems. This book, without risking spoilers, heads in a much darker direction, as some characters who were minor threats turn out to be tremendous threats for Min and his team and family.
Fun writing, snappy and relevant dialog, and a more interesting story. These books keep getting better and better!
As the series as gone on, I've gotten to like it even more. He has toned down the sex a bunch, but still has crude language for the in-book curses. Difficulties and challenges continue to grow as Minalan's power does, so the challenges stay fresh. More of the backstory gets filled in, which only genders more questions as to what actually happened in the past and were it will go in the future. Will definitely continue reading!
Aside from some spelling errors, this book continues with the same tone and pacing of precious books in the series. I enjoy the books with less warmongering, and this is one of those. I continue to eagerly read on the series and I am Very glad these are free with Kindle Unlimited.
I'm still thoroughly enjoying this series. I do sometimes wish that Mancour would edit more and drive things along. That said, I still love all the court politics and battle preparation scheming that goes on. This one also ended very well too with quite a lot of gripping action and levels at the end.
This has been my favorite book of the series so far. I feel like the main character experienced more growth here than in any other book. The conflict is very internal and he faces some of his character flaws that have bothered me from book 1. I can tell that the author loves writing these books and continuing to create this world.
This book was a real treat, and a tearjerker. Also, I jokingly blame the author for my dropping grades in physics and trig. These books are ADDICTIVE!!!!
Good not great that is it. They require more words so i will make some up.... Kike the rediculous appendix a and appendix b that made me tap the screen 100 times to gwt to the end. Hajsh kfjririb uquebx there those are my qorss words.
The author continues to develop the characters and put many twists and turns. He also is developing an extensive medical system. There's times where I feel like I'm actually reading history of the real world.
The spellings is grown many surprises in this book. He has many accomplishments and a great tragedy dealt to him and his holdings. Looking forward to the next book.
Well written pageturner couldn't put it down, though now I'm stuck awaiting the next book. Loved and hate the cliffhanger and at the end really want the next book now but was shocked how it was ended. Love the the Spellmonger the character is so we'll developed.
It's like the writer decided that all characters would get a - 50 IQ in this book. And that the MC will be the most incompetent one ever. Sad. The only reason I gave it 2 star rate is because of the domain building which is the only reason I'm reading this work.
Another very interesting story with a lot of twists and turns. We are getting to the point where there are so many side stories that the main characters get left to the side. Overall, very good.
Enjoyable novel and a fun and magic-packed series. A lot more kingdom building elements as Mirilin is confined to his lands after the events of last novel. Does some magic research, conquers some new territory and does a lot of enchanting.
