"If life were easy, it wouldn't be worth living"

The combination of the Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella was really well done. It was engaging, sweet and the characters were relatable. The story explores themes like grief, anger, family abused and the struggle with finding the light in those darkness moments. I really appreciated how the magic system was based on the light that people and feelings bring to humans and in having faith. Plus, having Adara being able to smell emotions added an extra layer to all the characters and the ambience in the story.

I loved Adara relationship with his brother. He was very protective and caring with her reminding her that she was more than the cursed she was living with. I appreciated how Evander, even though all hardships and abused from his family, stayed firm with his convictions always trying to help his people. Throughout the story, Adara and Evander learn to find courage for those they care about while healing together.

The only thing I felt pretty sudden was Evander's cousin change of heart. I think more development or explanation was needed because it felt like a whole different character.

I stayed with lots of questions. Who was the person that gave her the enchanted mirror? Who is plotting everything behind the scenes? Who is the woman in Caladen's dreams? I really hope all this is explore in the next book and also I'm looking forward to Caladen's story!

"There are other problems besides your curse. Yes, it's made you angry. Yes, you could hurt people, but no less than anyone else in the world. You have let the darkness rule you instead of finding the light"

Charmed Beast is a gender-bent Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella retelling with romance and magic!

I loved this book so, so much! Definitely one of my favorites for this year!

For anybody who has been following me for the last year, you know that I love Melanie Cellier and her Four Kingdoms world. It’s one of my all-time favorite universes. This book felt like Melanie Cellier’s world, and I am so happy with that! There is a magical world, with interconnected fairytales, and amazing characters, plus Christian themes!

This book is in the same world as Fairest Hunter and Lady Scarlett, and brief appearances were made by Rowena and Alvor. I loved those snippets so much, and seeing them married and happy brough me a lot of joy.

I loved the previous two books quite a bit, but I feel that the author really found her footing with this book. Things were still being set up in Fairest Hunter, but things, especially the magical side of things, were settled in this book. There was a little bit more flow, and I really sank into the story.

I loved how Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella were melded together. And I love that it was gender swapped. It made the story really intriguing, and I loved these different explorations. The author did an incredible job of including the aspects of both stories in unique and different ways. There was magic, but no fairy godmothers, and that was one of my favorite aspects. Instead of having an unknown fairy help Evander, it was old family friends, which I found much more meaningful.

I love how the author set up Adara and her story of being cursed, as well. It was well done, and I loved the exploration of anger and feeling alone. Adara had a wonderful storyline and character arc. She had to work to control her anger (a side effect of her curse), as well as accept that people still love and care for her. She also had to work to let the light in. It was a beautiful storyline, and one I really enjoyed.

The characters were absolutely amazing! Adara was such a sweet character, and like I mentioned above, she had a wonderful character arc. I loved how hard she tried and how much she cared for those around her.

Evander was also a lovely character! His story had some harrowing moments, and I loved how hard he tried to take care of those around him. I love hardworking main characters, and Evander was incredibly hard working. He also had anxiety, which I relate to, and I loved this representation. I loved how honest this representation was, and I really love how those around him that cared for him tried to help him with this. Through Evander there was also grief exploration and representation. The author handled both of these beautifully and I love the inclusion in the story.

The side characters were also amazing, especially Caladen, who is Adara’s older brother and Evander’s best friend. He was absolutely amazing, and I loved how much he cared for those around him. He also brought some levity to the story at times, especially in his interactions with Adara! In this book we have some wonderful positive sibling relationship representation!

The animal companions in this book were horses! I love animals, and I loved these horses! They were so sweet, and I really like the way we got to see them through Evander.

The magic in this book was very interesting. I like how the author has been setting it up and the way it manifests. It is very intriguing and I am excited to see more of this system in the future.

The ending was everything! I love these characters so much, and I was so happy with the ending! It was everything I could have wanted it to be and it wrapped up the story beautifully!

My only complaint, and this is the most minor of complaints of all time, is that I have to wait a year for the next book! I love this world and these characters so much, and I am so excited for Caladen’s story!

Charmed Beast is a fantastic Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella retelling with amazing characters, a sweet romance, and an intriguing magic system! This book brought me so much joy and I highly recommend reading it!

Charmed Beast is releasing on September 3, 2026.

*There is one slight change between ARC and final copy: “rewrote the ending wedding chapter just a tad to make it more punchy”

Genre: Fantasy, gender-flipped fairy tale retelling [of Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella]
Tropes: Brother’s best friend, found family
Setting: Kindom
Writing style: Dual POV (alternating chapters), 1st person, present tense
Tone: Somewhat emotionally tense
Character- or plot-driven: Both

Romance: Yes
Clean level:
• 2 mouth kiss minimally described, 2 barely described, and 2 without description
• 1 undescribed mouth kiss preceded by talk of kissing
• 1 instance looking at lips
• 1 instance of cupping jaw and running thumc across cheekbone
• 1 instance stroking cheek
• 4 head kisses and 1 hand kiss and 2 cheek, 1 nose
*See caveats below

Sensitive aspects:
• “Character experiences on-page physical and emotional abuse by extended family members. The villain is PG-13 rated”
• “There is a scene where a character is cornered and sexual assault is threatened” (very light, he does not even manage to kiss her)
• “There are fight scenes where characters are injured. Injuries are minimally described”
• He pulls her into his lap and leans back in his chair with her resting against his ches, includes 2 barely described mouth kisses (they’re married at that point).
• One character asks another of her suitor is a “good kisser”

Favorite aspects of the book:
• Weaving elements of the tales together
• The character dynamics

*Solwain is used as a stand-in for Jesus, but the only hint is very vague, so if you believe in G-d but aren’t Christian, you should still be fine. And while Solwain is invoked occasionally, even if you don’t believe in G-d, you can still very much enjoy the story.

Rather than using every element from each tale, some basic elements of each are woven together to create a stripped down Beauty and the Beast with a Cinderella vibe. Instead of, in the “beauty” having to get past the “beast’s” exterior, the beast has to accept herself.

The highlight for me is the support that the protagonists have from people in their lives her care about them even when, in Evander’s case, no one else does. Adara’s maid is like a sister to her, one who shows love in the way she stays with her when Adara isolates herself due to the curse and with tough love at the end if the book. Suzanna took the change in stride, and even when the king and queen — through no lack of love, it must be stressed — didn’t know how to handle it. Evander has support from his housekeeper and the field workers he toils with, as well as a Duke who is an old friend of his father’s, once Evander finally tells him about his uncle. And both Evander and Adara have her brother Caladen, Evander’s best friend. Caladen encourages them both to transcend their struggles and not let them hold them back in their lives.

____________________________________

“Sir Joaquin was rude and inconsiderate. You are a good woman in an unfortunate circumstance. More people will understand that than think in the same way Joaquin did.” I fold my arms. “I could smell your disgust the first time you saw me, Devlin.” He winces. “I apologize. I was surprised.” I shake my head. “I can smell the difference. You were disgusted.”

As painful as it is and as uncomfortable as it may be to accept, people’s initial reactions to things like this do not make someone a bad or shallow person. It’s how you handle a completely natural reaction that makes the difference.

“I will do whatever is needed to end this, but I will not fight. Take my crown, banish me, whatever you need to feel safe, but I will not hurt you or anyone this night.”

What power does he have to do that?

One of my favorite fairytale retellings is Beauty and the Beast and CHARMED BEAST did not disappoint! I loved the gender swap with a mix of Cinderella. It’s a delightful story of sacrifice, connections, and seeing one’s inner beauty.

In CHARMED BEAST there was so much internal struggles for Adara and Evander. I felt I got to see so much more character depth than usual with a fairytale and that just made Adara and Evander more endearing. Adara is struggling with rejection and anger due to the curse. She separates herself from those that love her which leads her to be very lonely. Evander is tormented and terribly abused by his uncles and cousins, but still seems to see good in the world. After a chance meeting, Adara and Evander are drawn to each other. I loved how they started out as friends and slowly began to see how much they needed each other. Then bring in the support and love of those around them, especially Caladen (her brother and his best friend) and you have the makings of an epic fairytale. One of good verses evil, light and dark, and self-doubt verses believing enough in yourself to conquer all. CHARMED BEAST is a must read!

Tropes: she's the beast | he's Cinderella | he's shy & anxious | she smells emotions | brother's best friend | horse & plant magic | clean romantasy | "who did this to you?"

My Favorite Things:
*Adara’s harvest magic
*The curse allowing her to smell emotions
*Evander’s magic involving horses (loved Ronan)
*Evander’s quiet strength, loyalty, and protectiveness
*Adara’s gifts to Evander
*Her lady’s maid, Suzanna
*Adara saving Evander
*Faith aspect throughout
*All the tender moments
*Courage to face your fears
*Prince Caladen!

My Favorite Quotes:
“But know this, when you fight for the right, the light will be on your side.”
“I’m here. Got chased by a mountain lion. Kissed your best friend. Things are just fine.”
“There’s a time in a man’s life when he must realize he’s willing to fight for something. His woman. His work. His family.”

Happy reading!

This book combined two of my favorite fairy tales (Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella), gender swapped them, added realistic internal character challenges on top of the external villains, fleshed out a believable world, then mixed in magic and a sweet friends-first romance. I absolutely adore this book and will most likely read it again at some point in the future. It did take me a minute to find my stride reading it. I read the first book Fairest Hunter some time ago and had forgotten that the characters in this world have their own internal magic as well as some of the references back to the first book, so felt like I was missing something through the first bit of story, but once I settled in, I couldn't stop reading. I love the depth of the characters and how they deal with very human internal challenges. I dare say this book outdid the first novel in that regard. I also appreciated the faith aspect and the viewing of their magic as gifts. The only thing I would really nitpick is that I felt like the change of heart at the end for one of Evander's cousins felt a little sudden and unexpected. I also wish we knew more about the person who gave the enchanted mirror. Where did they come from? What was their motivation? But it's possible this will be explored in the next book, since it seems to be headed into the land ruled by the intended recipient of the curse. Overall, this book provided a fun escape and I enjoyed every minute of it! I received an advanced reader's copy of this book and these are my own honest thoughts and opinions.

I found this book so charming that I could hardly put it down! Charmed Beast by MK Felix thoroughly entertained my imagination with its unique twist on two favorite fairy tales. I lost count of how many times this book had me smiling!

Evander, cast as Cinderella in the story, proved to be a favorite male protagonist. I found him adorable and courageous, a layered character with very relatable insecurities. Adara, cast as the beast, had her endearing qualities buried beneath the horrid curse. The way she could smell emotions added a fun dimension. With its engaging plot perspectives, the first-person point of view made it impossible not to be captivated by the unfolding narrative.

I found the writing well-paced and the flow perfectly suited to the genre. I appreciated the clean romance that added sweetness to the harsher aspects of the story revolving around Evander’s horrid uncle and cousins and poor Adara’s curse. The faith thread truly shines; its core theme a powerful reminder that God sees our hearts and that light will always overcome darkness.

This was one of those wonderful stories that offered me an escape as it fully captured my imagination. Back to my original statement, this was a truly charming story. I highly recommend it if you are old enough to enjoy a good fairy tale.

I received a complimentary copy from the author but was not required to leave a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Charmed Beast by M.K. Felix, is a story about Adara, who is a princess who accidently took the curse of her betrothed and became a beast, and Evander lost his Duke’s nobility to his uncle when his father died. However, Evander is best friends with Adara’s brother Caladen, who encouraged him to court his sister and marry her so she didn’t have to marry anyone else.

I loved how the Princess Adara had her brother looking out for her besides her maid Melinda. Her word choices really made you feel what Evander and Adara felt when they were sad and low, but also elated and in love with one another.

The retelling is similar to the true fairy tells storylines, with some extras added in. Honestly, the extras that MK added, made the fairy tales better. The walks through the garden, attending a ball with actual people, going to another home and getting help to become a Duke again, makes the journey of their love better, and the story better. MK adds more solutions and details to the over arching problems rather than losing the status of nobility and becoming a beast. I would highly recommend MK Felix’s Charmed Beast and I will definitely be reading her other books.

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from the author and these are my own honest thoughts and opinions.

I loved the way this story took the classic fairytales of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast and blended, twisted, and mashed them up into an entirely new tale! I also really liked how it addressed grief and anger and the fight against darkness in your heart. This was a sweet story about breaking through the darkness to find the light, being willing to sacrifice for those you love, and seeing beauty beyond pain, mistreatment, and the opinions of others.

The book took a little bit of time to find its stride, but once it hit, the story flowed and the pace was fast and exciting. The romance was a very slow burn, childhood friends-to-more, with no spice or explicit content, just kisses. There is no swearing, and there is a little bit of violence and injury, and some perilous moments.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fairy tale retellings, sweet romance, and stories with faith, hope, and light.

Thank you to the author for the eARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given willingly.

This is a gender-flipped mash up of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. Our MMC Evander is a likable character from the start. He is kind and a hard worker as he tries to help his people and keep his duchy afloat despite the actions of his uncle and two cousins. He also has a fun magic with horses that I loved seeing.

The FMC is a little bit hardened due to a curse she is suffering under, but a childhood friend Evander is exactly who she needs to break through the curse. Adara is the rougher of the two of them, she doesn’t come off as kind and caring as Evander does. Most of that has to do with the fact that she has been cursed with rage-inducing darkness.

This story kept me on the edge of my seat and I think I may even like it better than the first & the novella.

I received a copy of this from the author, the review are my true thoughts of the book.

This book literally made me laugh out loud, then cry uncontrollably, and even at one point shove the cover on my tablet shut. What an emotional ride! My heart was breaking for Adara and Evander. There were a lot of self doubt moments, but then there are also a lot of tender moments. I literally could not control my tears. And Evander’s uncle, made me so furious, but I guess that makes him a great antagonist! If you love the tropes He Falls First, She tends his wounds, or Friends-to-Lovers. Then you don’t want to miss “Charmed Beast”! I’d give it more than 5 stars if possible!

My favorite quote from this book:
““I’m here. Got chased by a mountain lion. Kissed your best friend. Things are just fine.” She props her chin on her hand. “Can you leave now?”

Charmed Beast by M.K. Felix
5 ⭐️

"It has been too long since I've been comfortable in the presence of someone, let alone someone I care about. I'd rather feel your anger than be alone."

This was the first book I've read by M.K. Felix, and it certainly won't be the last!

Charmed Beast is such a beautifully heartbreaking story. Seeing both Adara's and Evander's struggles to choose the path of light had me tearing up, yet the redemptive ending brought me so much joy. My favorite part of the whole story was that there wasn't a perfect "happily ever after". In the end, Adara and Evander both acknowledge that not every problem they've been facing is magically fixed, but they know that they can conquer anything together (and with Solwain's help).

This was a very interesting twisted mashup is the best way I can describe it because it is a gender reversed beauty and the beast and Cinderella mashup retailing, but MK Felix did an amazing job, not with just the gender reversal of two fairytales and then matching them both together, but it works out so well like I’m amazed at how many times authors have done different mash ups and done different twists and I’m just like oh my gosh that worked out so well how did they think of that? This is definitely one of those books. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. It was a nice pace I loved all the characters. I even love the magic that was kind of intertwined in it and it was a really good story all around. I have not read the first book, but I am looking forward to reading Lady Scarlet Soon.

This was so much more than just a Cinderella/ Beauty and the Beast mash up. This was a story of finding light and courage despite one’s darkness.

I loved the characters and the setting. I loved how perfectly the author blended these two stories and I loved how relatable both the characters were! I loved the faith threaded throughout the story and how it taught that sometimes being strong means learning to be kind.

This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and once I got to about 40% I could not stop reading! This was such a great uplifting fairytale that I could read again and again!

I liked this book! I enjoyed reading about how the two main characters both found it hard to be around people, but they felt comfortable around each other.

I also loved that they saw eachother on a deeper level than other people did. Where others saw a beast, he saw a beautiful woman, and where others saw a timid and weak man, she saw quiet strength.

Even though the writing itself felt simple and meant for a younger audience, I was hooked by how related the characters felt.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading christian fantasy abouts characters with hidden strengths trying to find light and happiness again.

This is a gripping mash up, retelling of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. It is done in such a wonderfully thrilling way.

Princess Adara is kind and good and on the eve of her engagement ball is cursed. She becomes a beast that hides from everyone but her brother, maid and a couple of guards.

Evander is a marquis but should be a Duke. His uncle and two cousins are evil men that are running his duchy into ruin. Evander has been made into a stable boy.
He is also Prince Caladen's best friend.

The two need each other to break the curse and to find the courage needed to stand up to evil men and the forces around them.

I absolutely loved this book. I highly recommend.

Loved it. Two fairytales wrapped into one with gender reversal? Can you get cooler? I mean probably but I haven’t seen it. The FMC is cursed and the MMC lives a miserable life. The two of them find hope and love in each other. I feel like the old guy who started it all is just cackling off in a corner somewhere. He needs to face some consequences for his foolery lol. The horses were lovely and I definitely gasped internally at some parts. Solid bad guys and solid storyline. I feel like this was a great rendition of both stories.

Charmed Beast is easily one of the best indie books I’ve read in a long time! I absolutely loved this fun gender bent twist on Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast.

The romance was sweet, clean, and genuinely charming. If you’re looking for a feel-good fairy-tale romance without all the spice, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.

And I’m already excited for the next book, especially with Calladen taking the lead! I can’t wait to see where his story goes.

Loved loved loved!! This is now my new favorite MK Felix book! The characters were so real and genuine. I related so much to both of them and they each had such beautiful character arcs. I loved the gender swapping and the trials both of them went through. I loved how they still had to fight their own battles but how it showed they didn’t have to fight them alone. The faith element was so beautiful! It was subtle yet powerful and it just made the book perfectly well rounded! Seriously if you love fairytale mashups definitely don’t pass this one up!

Loved Adara and Evander's story.

Just like book one, this was a fabulous gender-swapped Cinderella and Beauty & the Beast retelling.

I enjoyed moving to a different part of the map to Rovia and seeing how another curse would be lifted.

Loved the interactions between all the characters... yes, even the evil ones. Since I'm very familiar with these fairytales, I had fun spotting the parallels and also appreciated the allegory to our Christian faith in their magic system.

🌹I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and advertising on social media all of my own volition as I signed up for it.

🐴I have read both Fairest Hunter, the first book in this series and Lady Scarlett, the companion novella, and was SO excited to be able to read this one early and support M.K. Felix in reading and sharing about it. I loved that Adara’s curse was written as a picture of Post-Partum rage and mental health issues as a way to both show others what it can be like for someone living with them and as a way to show those dealing with it that there is hope. The same goes for Evander and his social anxiety, and showing that sometimes we have to think of others and look at those outside of ourselves to give us the courage to do something that is uncomfortable for us but necessary. I loved all the side characters and there was some cute side romances as well. I am very excited for the next book in the series with Adara’s brother Caladen!

🌹Reader’s Notes:
•Format: Ebook
•Pov: Dual- Adara & Evander
•Genre: Clean Fantasy Romance
•Series: The Favored’s Curse-Book 2
•Representation: uncontrollable rage(similar to post-partum rage or that brought on by mental health struggles), social anxiety, panic attacks
•Romance Level: 1.5- just a few, very lightly described kisses, and light romantic touches
•Swearing Level: None
•Violence Level: PG/PG-13- physical abuse, attempted murder x2, one character is stabbed
•Other Notes: drinking, and drunkenness
•Triggers: Physical and emotional abuse by family members, threatened sexual assault, injuries & blood(minimally described, not gory), social anxiety, panic attacks, attempted assault
•Age rating: 15+ (because of themes of abuse, but would be totally appropriate romance and swearing wise for much younger teens-it’s all up to parent discretion ☺️)

Only the second book in this series so far and I already love the whole series so much! Adara and Caladen are so sibling-coded, bickering with each other while still looking after each other. I love how their relationship grew closer during her curse.❤️ Evander is the best! He wants to look after and protect what is his own. He grows more confident as he sees the need for action. I love the theme of light vs dark and anger vs joy.
Can't wait for Caladen's story! 😁
