And where is Lizzie and John's relationship headed now?
Kate Baray writes page-turning urban fantasy with relatable characters.
When Kate's not tapping away at her keyboard or in deep contemplation of her next fanciful writing project, she's sweeping up hairy dust bunnies and watching British mysteries.
Kate is from Austin, Texas (where many of her stories take place) but has recently migrated north to Boise, Idaho, where soup season (her favorite time of year) lasts more than two weeks.
She's worked as an attorney, a dog trainer, and in various other positions, but writer is the hands-down winner. She's thankful readers keep reading, so she can keep writing!
Kate's series include Lost Library and Spirelli Paranormal Investigations. Under the pen name Cate Lawley, Kate (aka Cate!) writes Vegan Vamp Mysteries, Death Retired Mysteries, Fairmont Finds Canine Cozy Mysteries.
The first four chapters drag. Perhaps the intent is to make the MC quirky and interesting, but there were too many irrelevant details cluttering the narrative. Worse, book-time covered over two years with no real plot progress to show for it.
Also, a lot of ‘tell’ and not enough ‘show’. The neighbor’s BBQ talents could have been revealed in conversation easily, but instead was delivered by the narrator.
Book 1 It starts oddly with 2 years passing after receiving the omneous book. Why this time had to be waited we don't know by the end of book 1 (not even by the end of the box set and book 3). But things are picking up when John, the lycan, enters the scene. Lizzie's a bit bland so having a wolf sniffing around and finally some information about the magic in this world and some action helped to keep me reading. Very intrigued by the end of book 1 and glad there is the next one in the box set.
Book 2 I got a bit tired of the slow progress of the characters. Lizzie, the ever clumsy new magic girl who discovered one gift after the other that exhausted her. And John, her over protective anxious wolf shifter who didn't see her as his partner but as a vulnerable puppy who needs wrapping up in cottonwool. I loved the dragons thou! And more interesting ways of magic!
Book 3 In book 3 we finally get to meet the pack and it's more about their problems. But is it really or is this all a part of someone's bigger plan? There is lots of potential for further books.
All in all, not a bad series but the characters are a bit slow in development and the stories too. There wasn't a lot difference in the storylines either. It always involved a master mind playing them, Lizzie being kidnapped and a bit of a damsel in distress saved by her wolf until she's brought to the point where she has to use her magic and she's just so powerful but doesn't know it. 3.8 stars
This was totally and delightfully a journey of reading enjoyment, pure and simple filled with lots of entertaining action and the most likeable people.
Good reading is all about the characters and the connection we make with them. In this way we share their adventures and their lives. Add to this a fresh mix of magic and wolves and an easy writing style and you get loads of fun, romance and paranormal time-out.
I struggled to get through book one of this 3 book “bundle”. Too many characters to keep track of, plot dragged, too much sexual innuendo, too much lusting by the characters, and too much kidnapping....thankfully no graphic sex in the first installment. To make matters worse, there was a cliff hanger ending! Will not be continuing with the other 2 books in the bundle. Cannot recommend this book/series at all.
Lost Library Collection was a different genre for me to read. Previously, I have not read magic, witchcraft or Lycan type books. The concept was interesting as well as the characters. Lizzie, who is the main character, I found to be rather immature for a woman who lived alone and had her own business. If one is a fan of magic, etc. then this book is for you but I cannot recommend it unconditionally.
It's best to read these books in order so as not to get confused regarding the relationships between characters and also when things are mentioned that occurred in the past. Definitely more to these books than I anticipated which made each one very exciting to read. Would undoubtedly recommend these books to other's interested in this genre .
An excellent series in one book! Meet John , Lizzie, Kenna,Max , Gwen and many more characters as the stories unfold. Lots of action, mystery, humor and romance. Whether you read the books separately or as a collection , they are excellent! The stories will keep your interest and there are plot twists. I highly recommend this book!
only made it about 1/2 way through the end book. The first was okay, and I expected it to get better now that the characters are set, but instead I started finding them all unlikable to the point I can't make myself finish.
There is so much madness and mayhem, kidnapping, romance and supernatural butt-kicking that I am exhausted! Lizzie is such a great main character with lots of great comebacks.
I read all three of the included books. I will say that this is not a book that I would say, “omg, you HAVE to read this.” This is something you read when you absolutely don’t have anything to read.
Loved the intro into this amazing world-the characters are all quirky and well-developed personalities—(I appreciate the older characters)—The lots are interesting and keep you wanting to turn the page. Looking forward to the rest of the series….
This series has lots of action, lots of snark, lots of humor, good villains and characters you can care about. The List Library series, so far, has it all!
I read two of the three of these and they were fine, I probably won't continue on - the lead being kidnapped three times in two books was a bit tiresome.
I wasn't sure when I started reading these books whether I would like them. They are different to the books I normally read but I was pleasantly surprised. Lizzie as a main character is engaging, and you feel for her as she discovers this new world around her she never knew existed. Personally I could have done with a little less focus on the sexual side of her relationship with John.
I liked this series but it was a bit less in formative than I expected. Story line needed a little more info in some places but, I did like it and glad to read it. I will buy more of her books.
