I'm kind of disappointed to find that number 3 and on were never translated into English. Such a shame.

More serious in tone than the first volume, but still great. Poor Misaki's backstory, for one. There were a lot fewer funny lines from Shiraasan in this one. This is not a complaint, just as observation.

For more thoughts from me on the series overall, here's my review of the first volume: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I still 100% recommend this series and am looking forward to trying to find the next one.

As with the first, this was mostly just a fun, cute and bittersweet little read. It's a shame nothing got licensed in English past this point, but it was still a nice little break in what I was reading. Not sure whether I'll keep these or pass them on to one of my nieces but I'm glad I read this all the same!

The magic in Hibiki's Magic is that it not only has outstanding art, but also manages to strike the perfect balance between dark, tragic circumstances and absolutely adorable kawaii squeeness. It's just so cute! And dark! All at the same time!

I can't help but wonder - since magic has a price, what's the price that Hibiki is paying? At this point, it's not clear.

The "price of magic" convention reminds me a bit of Fullmetal Alchemist. Actually, I think there are several similarities between FMA and Hibiki - Hibiki's world is a post-war world in which magic was used as a weapon, homunculi can be created, gruesome unethical magical experiments occurred, and there is also a technological presence - steam-powered trains, etc.

Both of the first two volumes are focused on character stories rather than an overall epic plot. And gosh are those characters wonderfully wacky! (The homunculus warrior/weapon is very, very fond of melon cakes!) Hibiki excels at rounding out characters and having them really yank on some heart strings.

Cynics might not like Hibiki, as it does tend to be a bit sentimental and hopeful. Yet still bittersweet. Hmm. At any rate, this series certainly has me wrapped around its little finger.

I checked the TokyoPop site and the ANN site, neither seem to list a release date for volume three - or how many volumes there are in the series. I intend to snap up a copy of volume three as soon as it's released.

The second half (Well, sort of - I'll get to that in a bit) of this series pulls things together a little bit more than the first volume did, indulges in a little more focus on the history of the world and the war, and introduces more potentially fascinating characters.

We get to meet a swordswoman whose past is weighing her down, a demon with a penchant for sharing fresh-baked melon bread, and some history on the leader of the school Hibiki's at. It's a solid volume, cute and with the same dark/cute tone, but lacking some of the more awkward things from the first issue.

And then it just... stops. Only two volumes have so far been released in America, and while it does seem that the series continued in Japan, I can't find confirmation of if enough for a third volume was ever released there either. So the story threads, the character arcs, the mysteries in the world building? None of them get a conclusion. It's not an uncommon thing to happen with manga, and I think the books are entertaining enough on their own to have been worthwhile reading, but it's definitely something to keep in mind. Alas, this drops this volume to a 3 when I sort of wanted to give it a 4 while reading it.

In some ways I kind of like this book a bit more than the first one, but in some ways I don't. I like this book more than the first because there is more back stories to characters. I have to admit, the book was a little hard to start, but once you get started in it, it's a good read. It's kind of a shame to see the book end like this, because you can clearly see it was meant to have more books to it, I don't know if it just hasn't been translated yet, or if the books were cut off, or if the series was forced to end, but it's a shame it didn't continue. I like it and I think it's cute, and I'd gladly read them again.

P.S. I'd also like to try Melon Bread

Kukira Hibiki's magic nggak ada lanjutannya. Ternyata berseri toh :D

This series is growing on me, as I find out more of Hibiki's backstory (and I love the squirrellike gusks who are so freakin' cute!). I'll definitely be looking for volume 3.
