In college, Griffin McCray and his four best friends had their lives planned out. Griffin and Luke Gallagher would join the Baltimore PD. Declan Gray would head to the FBI and Parker Mitchell would go on to graduate school as a crime scene analyst. But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world—and friendships—crumbled.
Now Griffin is a park ranger at Gettysburg, having left life as a SWAT-team sniper when a case went bad. The job is mostly quiet—until the day he captures two relic hunters uncovering skeletal remains near Little Round Top. Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott determines that the body is modern—a young social justice lawyer missing since spring—and all evidence points to the work of an expert sniper. When FBI agent Declan Gray takes over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he'll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he—and those he cares about—are going to escape a downward spiral of murder that crosses continents.

Dani Pettrey has done it again ,Ya'll!! She is definitely one of the best in the Romantic-Suspense genre. I was so happy when I bought a copy of Cold Shot, because I just loved her previous series the Alaskan Courage Series. Oh, how I loved the crime solving Mckenna family!: .
Which I highly suggest you read asap!. This story was just so engaging the mystery and the action was superb! I love how Dani Pettrey incorporates small ominous snippets from the villain's p.o.v. to keep you on your toes! I was seriously yelling at the book like the characters could hear me, lol!
Not only was the suspense captivating. I was really drawn in by the stories and back stories of the ensemble cast in this book. Each person deals with brokenness in some capacity and the journey they take with God for healing. I really felt for some of the things that they went through, a few parts really had the water works going. Dani Pettrey definitely makes people that leave an imprint on your heart! I'm so ready for book 2!! This book totally deserves 5 stars! If your a fan of suspense you will want to at this to your TBR Immediately... go on, add it!
Haha!! no pressure, really. ;-)
My fav quotes: ;-)
She loved suncatchers... It reminded her how God brings beauty and light to the darkest places. And that all the broken pieces of different and uniquely shaped glass making up one beautiful image reminded her how God brings beauty out of the brokenness and uses the smallest of pieces to make up a whole... despite the ugliness she saw in her own struggles, she trusted God in the dark places."
P.S. Not only is this book good, it also does good!! I love how Mrs. Pettrey pays it foward, by donating a portion of this book sales to a organization perpertaining the story. I would say which one but it's kind of a spoiler. ..(Just see end of book for the deets!)
I need to stop writing notes while reading books, and instead JUST READ. I get way too picky when I'm jotting down notes for a review. I think I miss out on the pure fun of just reading a good story. I haven't even made it through the first two chapters and already I've got way too many critical notes (see spoiler below). I truly think this story is going to be quite good, but in order to enjoy, I'm going to have to tune out/turn off my inner critic. So far I love the author's descriptive writing style, but cannot stand all the little contrived bits.
I need book two right now! And a third book the day after...and another the day after that! Seriously, this is one of my favorite crime-fighting teams ever. I'd like another book with Griffin and Finley as main characters before we even get to the next guy...which I highly suspect will be a Parker/Avery match. We have to find out what happened to Griffin's sister Jenna and who her killer is, and find out if Luke is alive, or if Kate's suspicions are wrong. I even want to hear more about the plucky Miss Tanner Shaw—though it seems perhaps she wasn't intended to become a major repeating character... I hope to see more of her anyway!
I loved that, while the romance was obvious, the men treated the women both as equals and as ladies, and there wasn't all sorts of touchy-feely lusty stuff. And the Christian comments, while minimal, were perfectly to the point and fit well with the story—not jammed in for the sake of making a point.
It's very plot-driven, but the characters feel real and relatable. Easily among my top reads this year so far...and I've read some really good ones already!
Talk about a nail-biter! I've been so excited to see what Dani Pettrey wrote after finishing her amazing Alaskan Courage series, and Cold Shot did not disappoint. The action begins swiftly and we get to know Griffin and Finley bit by bit as they are swept along in a dangerous investigation. Even though they haven't made each other's lives easier, I loved how the mutual admiration quickly turned to growing chemistry. They work well together and with the other members of the team each having their own set of skills, the plot moves forward at a steady clip. I appreciated that the characters turned to prayer in moments of anxiety, helplessness, and danger. The brief glimpses from the villain's perspective without revealing his identity ramps up the suspense and I couldn't put the book down! While the majority of the telling is from Griffin and Finley's points of view, we also see some from other members of the team, giving a great set up for the upcoming books in the series. I can't wait! Highly recommend, especially to fans of suspense with romance woven in.
(Thank you to Bethany House Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)
Cold Shot was a captivating romantic suspense. I was a little nervous about it, just because it's a new series and I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it as much as I did the Alaskan Courage series... But, it didn't take long before it got my attention and I ended up really enjoying it!
The characters were so good. I loved learning about the guys' friendship and what happened that caused their distance. I also am SO curious about Luke and whether or not he is alive and, if so, what he's been doing all this time. (Hope we find out in the next book!)
The mystery was interesting and there were some suspenseful scenes, although a couple of them seemed to be resolved a little too quickly for believability, but that may just be me and how I perceived things. :/
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed Cold Shot and definitely recommend it! I cannot wait to read the next book and continue this series!
*I received this book for free for my honest review. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
I thoroughly enjoyed Dani Pettrey's writing skills and the way she developed the characters in Cold Shot through conversation, description, and actions. The story begins with a rush of excitement and proceeds in an intriguing assortment of details and characters that kept this reader enthralled.
A hard to put down book that kept me wondering just who the villain was and if the quartet's missing friend was going to emerge in the story.
I look forward to reading Chesapeake Valor #2 by Ms. Pettrey as Cold Shot has left me hankering for more of these folks lives and adventures.
DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House a division of Baker Publishing Group to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own. I was not compensated.
Griffin McCray's life hasn't gone as he planned it. He and his three childhood friends, Declan Gray, Parker Mitchell, and Luke Gallagher, would all enter various branches of law enforcement. Griffin and Luke would go to Baltimore PD, Declan to the FBI, and Parker would become a crime scene analyst. Then Luke vanished, and the friendships have crumbled. Griffin's now a park ranger at Gettysburg after having life as a SWAT sniper when a case went bad. Nothing ever happens in the park. Until the one evening that Griffin catches two grave robbers near Little Round Top. Only these skeletal remains aren't of the Civil War variety. He calls in forensic anthropologist Finley Scott, and soon the case heats up. Griffin is reunited with Declan and Parker, and the three try to identify the victim. Only someone doesn't want that to happen. Finley's life becomes in danger and Griffin will do all that he can to protect the woman he's coming to love - even face down the demons of his past.
When I first that Dani Pettrey had a new series coming out, I promptly added it to my never ending to read list. Over the past few years, she's become one of my favorite romantic suspense authors with her Alaskan Courage series.
Going into this new series, I knew it would be about different characters. I wasn't sure what to expect, honestly. This book opens with a bang. And it moved very quickly. I did find it to have a lot more of character building than I expected. I mean the author has introduced each of the main characters for not only this one, but the others in the series.
I liked both Griffin and Finley. I thought that they worked well together. I also loved the interaction with Parker, Declan, Avery, and Kate. As their stories come up, I'm looking forward to reading them. I'm hoping that Declan's story is next, but I don't know.
The suspense was built up in the book. I thought that the killer was one person and ended up being completely wrong. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this.
I received a copy of this book for free first from the author to promote, and then a 2nd copy from the publisher to review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of Irene Hannon, Dani Pettrey, Dee Henderson, romantic suspense
Hot guy on the cover notwithstanding, this first book in the Pettrey’s new Chesapeake Valor series is packed with well-crafted action, high-stakes tension, and keep-you-guessing suspense. Oh yeah – and some pretty heart-clenching romance too :-D
One thing I love about Dani Pettrey’s writing style is how descriptive she is without over-telling. Instead, she creates an atmosphere of senses that pull you into the scene – sounds, smells, sights, even tastes and sometimes touch too. I think, especially in a suspense novel, this heightens the tension for the reader and helps us invest emotionally in both the characters we meet and the setting of the story.
In this first CHESAPEAKE VALOR book, we do get to meet a variety of characters in order to set up the rest of the series. With the glimpses we receive into their lives, their stories, their possible romantic interests, I am more than ready for the other books! And the subplot of their friend Luke’s long-ago disappearance is quite intriguing as well.
But back to Cold Shot specifically-
The case kept me on my toes. Seriously. Just about the time I thought I had it all figured out, Dani threw another curve ball into the mix or took our team down a different path altogether, leaving me delightedly flummoxed. And don’t relax. Almost ever. Even when you think it’s safe. I’m just saying.
The romance – blissful sigh! Wonderful chemistry mixed with respect and humor. Dani Pettrey writes a guy’s perspective on romance so well – the female’s perspective too, for that matter – but being able to write a guy that sounds like a guy, even when he’s experiencing warm fuzzy feelings, is a rarity that is not to be overlooked. (Irene Hannon and Becky Wade do this really well too, among others.) We even get some peeks into the brewing romantical possibilities among Griffin’s friends and the women in their lives, which also has me looking forward to the next books.
Most importantly, however, is the message that sometimes time doesn’t heal all wounds. Sometimes only God can do that. And we have to be willing to let Him. A tough lesson to learn – but a vital one.
Bottom Line: Dani Pettrey’s first offering in her new series is inventive, action-packed, and extremely well-written. Cold Shot bursts onto the scene with brilliant suspense and compelling characters that make it nearly impossible to put down. In fact, if you are at all prone to biting your nails when tensions are high, you may need to schedule a manicure once you’ve finished reading this novel! If you like romance with your suspense, Griffin and Finley are happy to oblige with some breath-stealing moments that are adorable and full of heat all at the same time. Fans of Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason, and/or Dee Henderson need to be reading Dani Pettrey too. Highly recommended!
(I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review.)
Cold Shot was one of those novels that had me continuing to think of the characters long after I turned the last page. Not only was the story thrilling and the romance amazing, but the characters wove their way into my heart early on in the book. By the end, I was fully dedicated to this new group of characters that the author has introduced me to.
I loved the premise of this new series, with the former friends Declan, Parker, and Griffin who were torn apart by tragedy. I thought that the growth process that Griffin had to go through emotionally in this book was so good. He had harbored hurt and anger for so long, and a guilt that was weighing him down. He was such an intriguing character.
Finley was a wonderful character, too, and her role of forensic anthropologist was so interesting to read about. I loved the way that Finley and Griffin’s relationship developed in this story. They had great chemistry and their feelings for each other added so much to the book. This was one of those story lines that simply kept me riveted from start to finish. The way the team worked to solve the case was fascinating to me and the author did a great job of creating a complicated plot with twists and turns that kept me guessing.
I am really looking forward to reading the future books in this series!
I received a complimentary copy of Cold Shot from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fast paced story. The pages included a lot of mystery and action as well as some insights from the killer. The revelation of the killer was however no surprise.
All the characters of this series was introduced, so there was a lot of character build up and sometimes I had to go back and see which characters were talking since there was a lot of jumping between Griffin and Finley and Parker and Avery. Even though the relationship between Griffin and Finley was sweet, I felt that it went way too fast from acquaintances to I love you's - I personally don't like the insta-love relationships.
I thought there would have been more about Luke, but the Luke story was only introductory in this part of the series. The author left the reader with two cold cases in this book, which I'm looking forward to see being closed in during this series.
Fans of Irene Hannon will enjoy this book.
I enjoyed this book, but for some reason enjoyed the McKenna series a lot more. But still recommended to fans of romantic suspense
Great start to the Chesapeake Valor series! Dani Pettrey has a gift at creating an entertaining story line with plenty of twists to keep the reader engaged.
In Cold Shot, an interesting cast of characters come together to solve a cold case mystery. While the two main characters are Griffin and Finley, readers get a taste of the other three "brothers" and what is to come in the series.
I look forward to continuing the series. Cold Shot is recommended for fans of Irene Hannon's romantic suspense novels.
A huge thank you to Dawn of Dawn's Dreams for a complimentary copy of the novel.
This book was a fantastic way to kick off the series. I wish I'd read it first as it really showed why and how the characters in this ensemble cast clicked and came together. A great suspense/mystery/romance. Will definitely read the third now.
Cold Shot left me wishing I hadn’t waited so long to pick up a novel by Dani Pettrey - and also knowing it won’t be the last one I choose to read. I absolutely loved it, and I’m sure Dani Pettrey’s fans will be quite pleased with this suspenseful start to her new series, Chesapeake Valor, too.
When a body is uncovered in Gettysburg, park ranger Griffin McCray and forensic anthropologist Finley Scott begin to investigate the murder and discover a lot of danger awaiting them. Two great characters who work together well and have sweet chemistry, Griffin and Finley find and follow the clues with help from Griffin’s friends (who I really hope to see again in future books) through nail-biting twists and turns that kept me guessing until an unexpected and satisfying conclusion.
With a marvelous blend of mystery, danger, drama, and romance, this fast-paced and action-packed book would not let me put it down. Dani Pettrey’s Cold Shot is a perfect read for readers of romantic suspense - I highly recommend it.
Thanks to Bethany House, I received a copy of Cold Shot and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
I have to explain why I gave this book 3 stars. I love the characters in this book. It took me awhile to figure them out but when I did I can't wait to read on to find out there stories. The love interest in this book was great. I love learning more about them and they had great background stories. The problem was the mystery they were trying to solve. I was totally confused and still am. I had no idea who was the murderer in this book. I think I will never understand the mystery of this book. Now this all could be me, so if you have read this were you confused as I was? I am looking forward to the rest of the series because like I said I have grown to love these characters. I would recommend this book even though I gave it 3 stars, just get ready to solve an confusing who done it!!
I immediately loved the characters and the relationship or non relationship between Finley and Griffin. I loved the intensity of starting with digging up a grave looking for treasure and finding a fresh dead body (that wasn’t supposed to be there) lying in the ground loosely covered. It pulled me in and kept me in.
This was my first Dani Pettrey novel and certainly will not be my last.
I purchased this a few days ago at Lifeway because it sounded interesting. I found it on Goodreads and it said it was a romance novel. I thought to myself, "Oh great. Well, so much for reading that." I'm glad I decided to read it. Yes, it has its fair share of romance, but it also has an engrossing mystery that I was unable to crack until the end. This isn't just a great mystery novel, it's also a story of love and forgiveness.
The story starts with Griffin McCray, chief park ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park. He stumbles upon two grave robbers exhuming a body. Upon further inspection, he finds it is not a Civil War era body, but a recent murder. He calls forensic anthropologist Finley Scott to come help. Soon, Griffin is joined by longtime best friends Declan Grey, an FBI agent, Parker Mitchell, and their respective assistants.
I read this book in less than 24 hours, which is surprising because I didn't think I would like it. The characters were vivid and well-developed. I especially found it easy to connect with Griffin as I am currently studying to become an NPS ranger.
I highly recommend this novel not just to lovers of mystery with or without some romance, but this is a novel that anyone will enjoy.
Exceptional start to a new series. I have to admit to being gutted after I read the last book in the Alaskan Courage series. I didn't want to leave the McKennas and I was mildy put out at the author for not making that clan bigger so there could be more books. :-) However, Dani Pettrey has redeemed herself with this magnificent start to a promising new series and a new host of swoonworthy heroes.
The stars of the Chesapeake Valor series aren't from the same family, but they are a brotherhood...of sorts. Fractured relationships are the result of past tragedies but they are beginning to move towards restoration. In Cold Shot they are united by a common goal -- solving a complicated cold case.
Pettrey provides delectable hints of background that she slowly reveals throughout the read. There's still plenty to learn about these intriguing men though, which has me rabidly anticipating the release of the next book.
So for now we'll concentrate on Griffin -- a taciturn and gruff park ranger who is carrying around a world of hurt and bitterness. He doesn't make a good first impression on Finley...or a good second, third or fourth one either. It is sheer delight to be privy to their inner thoughts as they size each other up. Finley's unsettled by her attraction to Ranger Grumpy until she burrows beneath the gruff exterior and catches glimpses of the real man. Be still my heart -- I was swooning way before she started (mind you I had the advantage of 'hearing' his musings about her.)
A delectable romance with loads of promise ensues. Pettrey develops it slowly, teasing her readers with just a glimpse of what is in store. Finley and Griffin learn to work together, respecting each others' strengths and weaknesses before gradually unbending enough to engage in some heart-to-heart talks that lead to a deeper relationship. Unexpected humour and compelling faith conversations make their love story even more thrilling.
As to the suspense -- intense, complicated -- the kind that keeps your heart racing and breath puffing out in shallow gasps from time to time. "Duck!" and "No!" became a kind of reading chant as I raced along plenty of hair-pin plot turns. Phew! Still catching my breath.
And I can't forgot to mention the road trip loving Irish wolfhound. Yes, I said Irish wolfhound. I might have swooned more over the dog than the hero. :-)
A definite 'must read' if you enjoy romantic suspense. Dani Pettrey fans will be ecstatic and she's sure to garner new ones with this enthralling story.
Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. in exchange for my honest review.
Dani Pettrey is an excellent Christian suspense author. I have read, and own, all her books. They are books that are definitely worth a re-read. Her last series, the Alaskan Courage series, contained 5 books! Loved that series so much. But this one, Cold Shot, in my opinion, is outstanding!
Griffin McCray is a park ranger at Gettysburg, having left life as a SWAT team sniper when a case went bad. Griffin also has some issues within himself. His job now is usually pretty quiet until skeletal remains are discovered in the park. Enter forensic anthropologist Finley Scott, who determines that this body is a recent one. Evidence points to a sniper kill. FBI agent Declan Gray takes over the case and Griffin realizes he must confront some of the darkest days of his life. Finley, too, has some confrontations to make herself.
Dani Pettrey has again created a cast of characters that are very real to the reader. Their lives, their pain, their joys become real to the reader also. Pettrey hits the ground running and the action careens toward the conclusion at a rattling pace, finally hurtling to an end nobody saw coming.
The reader feels a vested interest in these characters, they have been crafted so well. Pettrey gives us a look inside each of their heads for, I suspect, future books featuring each of them. I hope! The spiritual contest is amazing as well, and very much appreciated by this reader. There is a theme running throughout the novel. God's grace and mercy trump all, no matter what we feel or think. He stands ready with that grace.
I highly recommend this latest Dani Pettrey novel. I'm certain you will not be disappointed.
*I won an ARC of this novel. I was not pressured to give a positive review and all opinions are my own.
This is a great start to the Chesapeake Valor series that revolves around four friends (one missing) who grew up together and are now in some area of law enforcement and investigation. When a body in a shallow grave in Gettysburg Military Cemetery is found, park ranger and former sniper/SWAT member, Griffin McCray is on duty. Dr. Finlay Scott is an forensic anthropologist overseeing some work at Gettysburg and is called in. Since this is a modern burial, Griffin calls in an FBI friend, Declan Grey, and Finlay calls in Parker Mitchell, a specialist to help with the investigation. Things get sketchy when someone takes a shot at Griffin and Finlay and later tries to steal the body. Someone doesn't want the body to be identified but why? This is an intense action packed story that brings three friends back together and calls on their expertise to track a killer and keep others safe. It is a page turner from beginning to end. Moving on to the next in the series.
Cold Shot will take you on a ride you won't soon forget with shocking turns, compelling characters, and a threat lingering at every corner.
This was my first introduction to Dani Pettrey's writing and woozah! Awesome! I was immediately drawn in by her writing style. I really enjoy her descriptions and use of imagery to draw the reader in.
Cold Shot mainly focuses on Griffin McCray and Finley Scott, but the story is filled with other intriguing characters like Griffin's childhood friends Declan and Parker, among others. I loved Griffin and his somewhat grouchy exterior--give me a tough hero any day--but I also liked the other sides to him that are revealed through the book. If we're talking favorite characters though, I think Parker may take the cake...I mean, come one. That Irish accent? *swoon* I also enjoyed Finley's character and her tough, yet delicate sensibility. At first I was a little confused as to what her actual "job" was, because of where we come in at the beginning, but that got cleared up pretty quickly.
As for the plot, loved it! I will say there were a few parts I was almost lost...there is a lot of information given at certain times and, though it's necessary, it felt a little overwhelming at times. It wasn't a distraction though, just a speed bump for me. I also enjoyed the location--hello backyard! She mentioned Severna Park and I was like "woohoo" becuase I often go up there for photo shoots. But I digress.
The only things I noticed that I was less a fan of were a few "leaps" the characters made at one point. More like assumptions, I guess? I felt they were a little to convenient for the case. And I felt like Griffin was a little bit too enamored with Finley at the beginning...now, this I would almost not mention, but I'm just being honest here. I can see where there is a foundation for it, but I felt like his thoughts were very...overt? But eh--not a real "issue" to me, just a passing thought. It in no way affected my enjoyment of the book.
As a whole, I really enjoyed Cold Shot and I definitely recommend it. I feel like it was a solid, "team based" romantic suspense. I also loved the approach of multiple viewpoints--it heightens the tension and gives depth to the story. Dani's writing is so solid and I am definitely a fan. Excited to go back and check out her Alaskan Courage series (since a sweet friend just gifted me Submerged, book 1). Dani - you've made me a fan!
My rating: 4.5*
Originally posted on my blog: http://eahendryx.blogspot.com/2016/02... _______________ I received a free copy of this book for review purposes, but was under no obligation to read the book or post a review. I do so under my own motivation and the opinions I have expressed in this review are honest and entirely my own.
I don't know what it is but I had a HUGE influx of mystery/suspense novels at the beginning of this month. All I know is, I could not handle that much suspense. I was overwhelmed. Then, this beautiful specimen of a book showed up in the mail and I squealed so loud, I scared my cat out of a dead sleep. It was LOUD. Why?! I ADORE Dani. Seriously. I was blessed to be a part of her Sabatoged tour last year and after that, my sister and I were so hooked, we bought the other four in the series! I've been waiting for this one ever since.
I was a little depressed that her next series wouldn't be set in Alaska, it was just SO good. Fortunately, the lovable characters, faith messages, and swoon worthy moments were just as amazing in this book as in her Alaskan Courage series.
Okay, maybe this is crazy, but the other thing I love about Dani is her obvious creativity. C'mon?! How many characters have the names Griffin and Finley? Their names match their personalities and I love that.
I also love how she does such a great job of using multiple dialogues. Most of the time, I find authors use two characters' point of views and then you wait for the next book. Not Dani. She dives right in with such grace, I'm aching for the next book before I even finish the first!
This book took me about 3 hours to devour it. Yes, 3 straight hours, I was addicted! I've read it at least three times since I first turned the pages and every time I come to the same conclusion:
Edge of your seat suspense, swoon worthy romance, and lovable characters mixed with faith and humor.
How do you get any better?! You don't. That's why I'm anxiously awaiting the next book. And the next one. And the next one. And...you get the point. ____________________________________________________
*My overall thoughts*
Three words. Addicted. Addicted. Addicted. Okay, so that's one word but it completely describes my feelings on this book! _______________________________________________________
*My Rating* I give Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey...
(500,000,000 is more like it!) 5 stars!! _______________________________________________
*I received this book from the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review, which I have given. All thoughts were my own and I was not compensated in any other way.
Page-turning suspense. Plenty of action — just when you think the characters will have a “normal” scene, something unexpected happens to throw them (and you) into an adrenaline rush. The mystery of the villain was well-shrouded and encompassed in a bit of a twist.
Characters are already grounded in their faith in God. The story showed personal growth and emotion of the characters without a major life-changing spiritual experience, though there was a definite theme of trust and hope through the novel. The everyday life and walk with God depicted here lent to its realistic feel.
Ensemble cast –kind of. There was complicated histories and relationships between Griffin and his friends who become unlikely colleagues. This is the perfect setup for the series. Not all is revealed from the first few chapters, either, which kept the dynamic of the cast interesting.
Romantic chemistry. It’s already there from page 1! Griff & Fin know each other already, so a work-turned-serious relationship feels like a natural step. Though it’s more like protective Griff reacting to a crime threat that just happens to involve the attractive and independent Fin. But it’s fun to see them fight their mutual attraction along the way!
The way Griffin and Finley compliment each other. I was impressed by the way their personalities seem “written” for each other, though in some ways they are complete opposites. :) Griff is a compassionate gentleman. Fin is a capable encourager. Both of them dealt with guilt, regrets, and were disturbed by other peoples’ actions. They were each able to support each other in different ways to move toward forgiveness and letting go of fears.
Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for the review copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Remains of a dead body are found under a tree in the Gettysburg National Military Park; not unusual in the area, except that this skeleton's remaining soft tissue indicates that the corpse was recently buried. Chief Ranger Griffin McCray calls in forensic anthropologist Finely Scott to help secure what appears to be a crime scene; and it is. When McCray and Scott call in additional experts to identify the victim; a well known and respected human rights lawyer, it becomes quite obvious that someone is taking extreme measures to make certain that investigators don't uncover what they so carefully attempted to disguise .
Griffin and Finley have been politely, but aloofly working together over a period of months while Finley finished an excavation project in the Gettysburg Park. Serious sparks fly, however, when a dangerous sniper takes a calculated shot and Griffin makes it his business to protect the lovely woman. Working with McCray and some of his colleagues, who just happen to be childhood friends, ignites Finley's deepest fears, but she feels safe with Griffin, and cautiously hopes for a relationship that is beyond fragile and casual. Helping Griffin find peace with his past is crucial and staying alive will be absolutely mandatory, if Griffin and Finley are going to have any chance at a future.
Unravelling this complex case is fascinating for the reader and life threatening for its characters, especially when the story transcends into government level international crime. "Cold Shot" is an entertaining suspense , providing an excellent catalyst for Dani Pettrey's new Chesapeake Valor series.
Christian based books are very frustrating to me. I know there must be good writers out there who wish to write Christian themed books. I have a hard time even describing what it is that frustrates me about the majority of Christian books I've read. It's usually a multitude of things. Let's use this book as an example. The characters were shallow and one-dimensional, but they're meant to be deep and engaging. The romances felt rushed and the two main characters have absolutely zero chemistry. Saying 'her heart jumped' when he looks at her or 'he felt inflamed' when looking at her, just doesn't cut it. In this book, they barely even talk to each other! And then they are amazingly in love. They both have these big emotional barriers based on horrible previous experiences, but the barriers fell over as easily as a row of dominoes. And then they've been placed in this incredible life-threatening situation, but I felt no tension, no feeling of impending doom.
But I think it's actually the Christian element that bothers me the most. I am a prayerful, religious person, but the italicized prayers throughout the entire book became annoying. The main characters talked to God more than each other, but then acted as if the other person somehow knew about their conversation with God. They never openly discuss their faith with each other, but seem to assume the other is Christian and act accordingly. In fact, that is the case with everyone in the book (except the bad guys, of course). And their prayers seem bossy, like they are telling God what to do.
Like I said, hard to describe what bothers me. Apparently, everything.
The Chesapeake Valor series is an epic, binge-worthy romantic suspense brimming with perilous escapades and tender moments. Let your mind feast on intense investigations as simmering attraction and blossoming relationships set your reader heart aflutter.
As former best friends, Griffin, Parker, Declan, and Luke, reunite through professional collaboration, they seek answers to not only their joint and tandem investigations but also vow to solve the mysteries which bind them together. Each man faces unique personal and professional challenges along the way, including matters of faith and love.
As a stalwart mister steady, Griffin immediately captivated my reader heart. The way he hides behind his broody, “Ranger Grumpy” façade while secretly stifling his burning desire to claim and protect super intelligent and beautiful Finley reduced me to a simpering puddle of reader satisfaction.
Pettrey’s masterful storytelling weaves intricate investigations with complex intimate relationships in a delightfully complex multidirectional plot. I have already begun rereading this intense adventure and I highly recommend the Chesapeake Valor series. I am eagerly anticipating future works from this author!
I borrowed book 1 through the Kindle Unlimited program and received a complimentary copy of books 2-4 from the publisher. I was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
After my second reading I wanted to update and let y'all know the audiobook is very good as well!
Cold Shot is the first book in Ms. Pettrey's Chesapeake Valor series. I cannot tell you how positively giddy I feel knowing a new series has arrived. Although this book is about Griffin (LOVE his name) and Finley (another great name) Ms. Pettrey doesn't stop there. We have the Irish rogue, Parker. Mysterious Alex. Lovesick Declan. And the admirable Kate.
Each character tugged at me and made me curious. What's their story? Who will hook up with who? They all seem to suffer from something in their past. Knowing Cold Shot is a part of a series, I don't mind waiting for those answers. Thankfully, Ms. Pettrey revealed Griffin and Finley's past issues, since of course the story is about them...
The pace was good, it was a page turner. So interesting about the workings of a cold case. I liked the dynamics between the three friends who are now in law enforcement. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series and discovering what happened to Luke , the fouth friend. The suspense was superb. The romance was natural and I can see how other matchups might work out. I loved Dani’s other series about Alaska and am loving this one, too.
Disliked Sometimes the romance was a bit too heavy for my taste. The kisses and attractions were a lot more detailed than I like.
Liked But the fact that Finley and Griffin had some really good conversations that were really sweet and touching made up for the somewhat heavier romance because their relationship wasn't only about the physical. Finley amd Griffin had struggles to overcome and worked through them together with God. That is why I loved their relationship, it was so authentic and very real. I did like the suspense although just not as much as other suspense novels I've read. I'm in love with all the characters! They all have such great personalities and I can't wait to read the entire series. I also loved the spiritual theme of letting go of bitterness, anger, amd regret towards the decisions that you've made and decisions others have made that affected you.
About this Book In college, Griffin McCray and his four best friends had their lives planned out. Griffin and Luke Gallagher would join the Baltimore PD. Declan Gray would head to the FBI and Parker Mitchell would go on to graduate school as a crime scene analyst. But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world--and friendships--crumbled.
Now Griffin is a park ranger at Gettysburg, having left life as a SWAT-team sniper when a case went bad. The job is mostly quiet--until the day he captures two relic hunters uncovering skeletal remains near Little Round Top. Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott determines that the body is modern--a young social justice lawyer missing since spring--and all evidence points to the work of an expert sniper. When FBI agent Declan Gray takes over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he'll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he--and those he cares about--are going to escape a downward spiral of murder that crosses continents.
My Review If book any indication Dani Pettrey is going to give readers another amazing series. In a similar fashion as the Alaskan Courage series the action starts from the opening pages and keeps going to the final page. The characters have strong personalities that are easy to like and relate to. However that is where the similarities end.
The author has left the beauty of Alaska and has taken us to Maryland. The characters are well thought out and I found them interesting. Griff and Finley were well developed from the opening pages. I am looking forward to seeing where the author takes the series, especially the central theme of the missing friend, Luke.
The story was full of action. We also had the opportunity to learn a little bit about Gettysburg and snipers. My favorite part was getting to know these characters. I can not stress enough how good they are.
I would definitely buy this book for a fiend or family member.
