Efendi ile Köpeği
Thomas Mann'ın 1919 yılında yayımlanan ve otobiyografik öğeler barındıran anlatısı, Mann ailesiyle yaşamış av köpeği kırması Bauschan ve sahibi ekseninde temellenir. This story, sometimes titled A Man and His Dog, is about the affection between a dog and a man. The dog, named Bashan, displays tenacious loyalty to the man who adopted him, saving him from an unenviable fate. It is easy to recognize Thomas Mann in the narrator who recounts the development of his relationship with the dog.
This story left me with mixed feelings, although my overall impression was positive. I wish the narration had been slightly more dynamic. I hesitated between three and four stars, but something moving and deeply humane about this story made me round up my rating. Its appreciation of nature and its praise of the simple joys of life, such as walking with your dog, inhaling fresh air, and beholding picturesque landscapes, are finely rendered and feel contagious. It made me smile more than once.
Mann painted a vivid portrait of genuine friendship between animal and human. Like most relationships, theirs is not perfect. It is joyful, it is touching, and it is somewhat problematic at times. Mann can be self-absorbed, ignoring his dog and not always valuing Bashan's faithfulness, but he does care about his dog. Bashan can feel abandoned and depressed. But the dog's appetite for life is too strong to succumb to melancholy. His enthusiasm leaps off the page. Like the narrator, you soon grow fond of Bashan. The writing is lyrical and observant.
I should mention that the story has fleeting moments of animal cruelty. To be fair, the narrator did not view them as such when writing it circa 1918.

I found this a mostly charming account of a man's life with his dog, Bashan, and their adventures on walks through meadows and woods in Bavaria, where Mann summered in the early years of the 20th century. The descriptions of nature are sometimes beautiful and I generally was amused by the anthropomorphic discussions of Bashan's feelings and the give and take of the relationship between dog and, Mann's word, master. Although they escaped my notice as I listened to the LibriVox audiobook while I was out walking, I've read reviews that reminded me that there are brief incidents of the master whipping Bashan and hitting him with a cane, so you should avoid if this would disturb you.

Biraz fazla betimleme ve tasvir vardı. Ama beğendiğimi söyleyebilirim. Yazarın Buddenbrooklar / Bir Ailenin Çöküşü kitabını merak ediyordum şimdi düşünüyorum bu kitapta bu kadar betimleme varsa o kitap nasıldır :D

Il titolo del presente racconto, Cane e padrone, a priori mi respingeva, padrone... una parola che proprio non sopporto. In originale, Herr und Hund, quindi Signore e cane, suonava meglio, così parto con la lettura, sperando di leggere qualcosa di coinvolgente sul rapporto uomo-cane.
Le prime pagine meritano, la scrittura di Mann è molto descrittiva e piena significati. Conosco il cane, Bauschan, conosco il signore, l'io narrante e pian piano il racconto scorre via... Purtroppo la parola padrone viene a galla e proprio come non volevo. Nel senso, il cane e l'uomo non posso essere semplicemente due amici, due esseri viventi, di specie diverse, che condividono un'esperienza?
Comunque, fino a metà il tutto è una discreta lettura, forse a tratti troppo fredda.
Da metà in poi inizia a risultarmi noiosa, prolissa e l'io narrante di un'antipatia fastidiosa, così arriviamo ad una frase che mi ha fatto cadere le braccia: Noi amiamo la caccia in sè, non per la preda o per uno scopo utilitario... Un concetto del genere lo avevo rilevato anche in un altro libro, traslato nella pesca, ma siamo lì: "Il vecchio e il mare" di Hemingway. Non riesco a concepire un concetto del genere, perchè uno uccide per mangiare, va beh ci può stare, uno ammazza per guadagnarci o per divertimento, mi fa ribrezzo, ma qui qual è il fine? Boh, come diceva il buon vecchio Kurt Vonnegut: "Così va la vita!". Caro Kurt, quante ne sapevi :-D

The book covers both canine and human psychology. The ending will make you laugh.
The narration by David Wales is not of a professional caliber, but the words are easy to hear. The recording is scratchy. The voice is hoarse. On the other hand, its totally free! I have given the narration two stars; it’s not bad. It’s better than nothing, and I am glad it exists.

This book was listed in the bibliography in the back of one of the short story collections I read not too long ago. Those stories were about dogs and naturally every title in the bibliography was also about dogs. I copied down a few to explore and ultimately chose this and one other to read.
I had mixed reactions to this book. The writing is mainly quite lovely, but I did get a little bored with the extremely detailed descriptions of the 'hunting-grounds'. Sorry for that, but I just could not make myself do more than skim through that part.
Mann describes his dog perfectly, so that it was very easy to 'see' him, and to understand that there were certain evidences that proved he was not a purebred German short-haired pointer but that Mann did not care about that. Basically, his children had fallen in love with pup Bashan the moment they saw him and they were the driving force behind the acquisition of the dog.
But as so often happens, dogs pick their own masters, and Bashan chose the author as his god. To such an extent that if he had been my dog I would have been completely annoyed at his fawning, needy demand for attention. I like a dog to be a companion but not a leech. Any dog acting like Bashan would drive me crazy, but the author accepted it all as the rightful due to a Man from a Hunting Dog.
The first two chapters delighted me, but chapter three was somewhat depressing, especially when Mann compares how differently Bashan and his former dog Percy (a purebred collie) reacted to the whippings they each had been given.
"Percy would grit his teeth and keep mum. He feared the rawhide whip just as Bashan fears it, and unfortunately he got a taste of it oftener than Bashan; for, first of all, I was younger and more hot-tempered during his epoch than I am at present, and secondly, his heedlessness often assumed a wanton and sinister aspect which simply clamoured for chastisement and urged me to it. When, driven to extremities, I would take down the whip from the nail, then, it is true, he would crawl under the table or bench and make himself small, but never a howl passed his lips when the blow, and perhaps yet another, came humming down upon his back; at most he gave a low moan, in case the whip bit too hard. But Bully Bashan begins to shriek and whimper when I merely raise my arm. In short, he is without pride or dignity, without self-restraint or self-discipline. But his activities seldom call for armed punitive intervention—the less so since I have long ago ceased to demand achievements from him which are contrary to his nature and insistence upon which might lead to a collision."
Bashan was lucky he did not enter his god's life in earlier years. He might not have survived long enough for Mann to write about him.
Once I got turned off this way it was hard to get interested in the rest of the story, and I must admit I was not all that impressed by it overall. I had too much trouble ridding my brain of that image of Mann raising his arm and Bashan screaming in fear. Haven't quite managed that yet, as a matter of fact.

Mann okumayı özlemişim. Güzel bir kavuşma oldu.

Thomas Mann betimleme konusunda aşırı yetenekli bir yazar. Venedik'te Ölüm beni daha çok etkilemişti bu kitapta ise edebi gücünü göstermiş.

A escrita de Thomas Mann revelou-se, como esperava, irrepreensível. No entanto, nem esta belíssima prosa foi suficiente para despertar o meu interesse pelas partes mais descritivas do livro, especialmente em relação à paisagem (capítulo «A Nossa Coutada»).
Mann revê neste livro alguns dos preciosos momentos que viveu com o seu cão, Bauschan, descrevendo o comportamento do seu companheiro e interpretando-o.
"Um Homem e o Seu Cão" despertou o meu interesse para o trabalho do autor, deixando antever a sua genialidade como escritor; não nego a qualidade do que li mas, se soubesse ao certo o que me esperava, teria lido antes outro dos seus livros.
Mann revê neste livro alguns dos preciosos momentos que viveu com o seu cão, Bauschan, descrevendo o comportamento do seu companheiro e interpretando-o.

Bir köpeğiniz varsa onun dünyasını iyi bilirsiniz. Thomas Mann bu canlarla birlikte yaşayanlara güzel bir armağan vermiş. Henüz sahiplenmeyenleri de özendirmiş.
Betimlemeler çok güzel kitapta. Doğal ortama duyulan sevgi güzel işlenmiş.
"Yukarıda, evin kapısında dönüp bir kez daha ona bakıyorum ve bu onun için bir işaret ;iki büyük sıçrayışta basamakları çıkıp yanıma geliyor ve veda niyetine omuzuna vurmam için ön partilerini kapıya dayıyor. "

I thoroughly enjoyed Thomas Mann's description of his relationship with his dog and their daily walks and adventures. Probably slightly different attitude towards treating animals than is current now but nonetheless a lovely book for dog and Thomas Mann lovers.

Üç verdim ama gerçek notum üç buçuk. Bu kitabı okuduktan sonra kesin olarak anladım ki, ben içinde bolca diyalog barındıran metinleri seviyorum. Betimlemeleri de seviyorum ancak bir yere kadar...Bu ifadelerden kitabı beğenmediğim sonucunu çıkarabilirsiniz, bu kısmen doğru, çünkü beklediğimi bulamadım. Ben biraz daha Hermann Hesse tarzı doğa betimlemelerini ummuştum. Kitabın hoşuma giden yerleri olmadı mı? Tabii ki oldu, yazarın pek değer vermediği anlaşılan hastane bölümü ile kitabın en güzel kısımlarını oluşturan av bölümü çok güzel anlatılmış...Hem Efendi hem de Köpeği yönünden...

"Av avdır,ganimet bunun önemsiz bir parçasıdır..."
İki nokta arasında bazen sonsuzmuş gibi gelen kelimeler bana Thomas Mann amma da uzun cümle kuruyormuş böyle dedirtse de, kitabı sevdim. Özellikle de "av" yani son bölüm etkileyiciydi.

Thomas Mann bu uzun öyküsünde sahip ve köpek arasında geçen deneyimleri aktarıyor. Bir köpeğin (Bauschan) bir insan gözüyle nasıl algılandığını hikayenin satırlarında ayrıntılı bir biçimde aktarmakta. Özellikle otobiyografik öğeleri de barından bu uzun hikayenin kimi kısımlarında hüzünlenip, kimi yerlerinde ise kahkaha attığımı itiraf etmeliyim.
Çevirisi ve teknik detayları epey iyi olan kitabı köpek sahibi olanlara başta olmak üzere, herkese tavsiye ederim.

אני האמת מדברת על ספר אחר לגמרי, בעברית, אדם וכלבו, אוסף סיפורים ישנים שוברי לב מתורגמים מרוסית לעברית מכמירת לב. לא מוכנה לוותר על להזכיר לעצמי שקראתי את זה - שוב - בימים הקשים האלה של מלחמה עם איראן, לא פחות, אפילו שהאפליקציה של goodreads לא מכירה את זה. תכירו, חבל לכם לא! פשוט נפלא, כל סיפור פנינה נפלאה. קצת ילדי, כן? כמו שצריך, הלוואי שמבוגרינו ישובו להרגיש קצת, כמיוחס לילדים וכמצופה מהם, וכמובן גם הילדים עצמם!

Gostei bastante da leitura, sobretudo porque reconheço no Bauschan alguns traços do meu próprio perdigueiro abastardado, e de resto acompanhante desta minha leitura, sempre enroscadinho a mim enquanto lia. Contudo, o (mau) trato e a parte da caça, ainda que compreenda ou conheça o contexto, deixou-me um pouco mal impressionada.

Um Homem e o seu Cão, bem, não sabia muito bem o que esperar disto, mas o título atraiu-me. Esperava quiçá as aventuras e desventuras dum homem e o seu cão, e eis o que o livro nos conta.
Um homem e sua família, vivendo numa zona próxima do rio, perderam o seu cão de guarda, infelizmente, e agora sentem falta dum cão de guarda. Foi-lhes dito que havia um que lhes satisfaria, e lá foram vê-lo. Deram com um cãozito medroso, encolhido, pouco enérgico, aos parcos cuidados de uma senhora. Resolveram pensar bem, mas lá se comoveram com aquele pequeno ser mal tratado e levaram-no para casa. Esta é a história do homem e do seu cão.
Bauschan é um cão não puro de Perdigueiro, com características muito próprias, que não o incluem na raça pura de Perdigueiro. Mas não é por isso que não é adorado pelos donos. Não é por isso que deixa de brincar ou passear ou ser leal ao seu dono. Bauschan passeia muitas vezes com o dono, tornando-os grandes compinchas de passeios. Bauschan caça, mas só pelo prazer de correr e caçar, não de comer ou matar. Não é muito vencedor nesse campo. O dono delicia-se com isso, e já lhe conhece as manhas. São ambos leais um ao outro, e gostam imenso um do outro, como vamos percebendo ao longo do livro.
Confesso que fiquei com um sentimento agri-doce. Creio que esperava mais aventuras, mais lugares ou passeios, mas o livro passa-se quase exclusivamente junto aquelas margens do rio, passeando os dois ao tempo que o Bauschan faz as as investidas de caça.
Num livro de 120págs vi-me confrontado com pelo menos 30 a descrever um espaço onde eles andam. Creio ter sido demais, não aproveitando para descrever mais da relação deles ou certas peripécias. Mas achei deliciosa a descrição que o dono vai fazendo do cão, a forma como ambos se conhecem e aos seus hábitos, a confiança um no outro, simplesmente delicioso.

Difficile da commentare. Anzi no. Una noia mortale. Un centinaio di pagine che si sono protratte per tre giorni in modo discontinuo e distratto. Chiaro l’intento di esaltazione della Natura e dell’amore per essa, dalla descrizione della caccia come valvola di sfogo e momento di unione e condivisione tra il cane e il suo padrone, contrapposta alla caccia sportiva o alla guerra, che è in atto mentre Mann scrive. Resta comunque molto noiosa come descrizione, almeno per me. Un amante della natura, dei cani, qualcuno che effettivamente ha un cane, credo possa meglio apprezzare questo libro, calandosi nei panni del padrone di Bauschan.

I actually didn't finish this book. I really didn't much like it. Apart from the occasional glint of humor or perceptive observation about his dog, I found the writing labored and heavy and dull for such a fun and light topic. So I put it down about half way through and gave up, at least for now.

Liefdevolle beschrijving van de omzwervingen die Thomas Mann met zijn hond maakt in de omgeving van zijn huis in München. Veel minutieuze en tegelijkertijd poëtische observaties van zowel natuur als van de hond.
Gelezen in de vertaling van Pé Hawinkels, die dicht bij het nogal breedsprakige Duits van Mann blijft en mij soms nieuwe woorden leerde - Smijdig (soepel) en Gebombeerd (opgebold)

This simple little memoir of Mann's dog illustrates his highly refined powers of observation. It is really a tribute to a dog's companionship.
