POWER THROUGH CONSTRUCTIVE THINKING

Rate this book
THIS book is designed to teach the principles of life-building through constructive thought. All power lies ia creative thought. Thought is the key to life; for as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. People are beginning to understand today something of the power of thought to shape the individual's destiny—they know vaguely that thoughts are things—but how the Great Law of thought is to be applied they do not know.
This book shows that your destiny is really in your own hands, because it is impossible to think one thing and produce another, and that by the selection of correct thought a harmonious and happy life is produced. It shows that weak and fickle thinking produces a drifting and wasted life, and that positive thinking produces success and happiness. It shows that fear is the ultimate cause or Tap-Root of all sickness, failure, and disappointment. And it shows the only possible method of overcoming fear.
What you really think about any person or any situation is your "treatment" of that condition, and if you wish the condition to change you must know how to "treat" it differently by a change in thought.
But it is also true that the fixed general convictions of your life, as distinct from your current thinking, make you what you are. Your Mental Conduct, your hour-byhour thinking, produces specific conditions, and may be thought of as the weather of your soul. Your fixed convictions concerning the things that really matter are seldom changed and may be called the climate of the soul, and it is these that mold your destiny.
What do you really believe about the great problems of life? What do you think about your relationship to God? What sort of God do you worship? Do you think that prayer really makes any difference? Are you merely praying to a magnified edition of yourself; or are you worshipping the true God in spirit and in truth? What do you think about life after death? Do you think that you have ever lived before? Are you nourishing a grievance at the bottom of your heart because you think you were born into unfavorable conditions?

This author's thoughts on the Lord's Prayer, and various key chapters in Psalms are very, very good. However, his ideas about life after death and reincarnation are unconventional. I also disagree when he says we have power over sickness and other misfortunes if only we change our thinking. But what of those who do not get well? Should they feel guilty about having failed to learn proper thinking and prayer?

Prayer means thinking about God. If you are thinking about yourself, or your troubles, or about somebody else, you are not at that moment praying. This is what Emmet Fox has taught me. I love that part in his book:
But how is this magic act of forgiveness to be performed? What is the specific treatment for guilt that causes such violence to the physical makeup? Only one thing is essential to its accomplishment, he says. "Will-ingness" to forgive. The method set down briefly is as follow~:
1. Get by yourself and become quiet.
2. Repeat any prayer that appeals to you or read a chapter
from the Bible.
3. Then say quietly: I fully and freely forgive---, I
loose him and let him go. I completely forgive the whole business in question. As far as I am concerned, it is finished forever. I cast the burden of resentment upon Christ within me. He is free now and I am free too. I wish him well in every phase of his life. That incident is finished. The Christ Truth has set us both free. I thank God.
4. Then get up and go about your business. On no account repeat this act of forgiveness because you have done it once and for all, and to do it a second time would be tacitly to repudiate your own work.
"Whenever the memory of the offender or the offense happens to come into your mind, bless the delinquent briefly and dismiss the thought. Do this, however many times the thought may come back. After a few days it will return less and less often, until you forget ·it altogether. Then, per- haps after an interval, shorter or longer, the old trouble may come back to memory once more, but you will find that now all bitterness and resentment have disappeared, and you are both free with the perfect freedom of the children of God....

This book makes sense of much of the archaic language of the King James version of the Holy Bible and translates it into actionable steps. While this is Christian focused, the principles of the New Thought Movement for practical application in our lives comes through loud and clear. Those who can read this with an open mind will find they are able to use the techniques for building a better life with skill and ease.

This is a book you can read and reread all the time. Each chapter is complete by itself. My life continues to change as I read this book.

Worthless

This book is complete crap! Mixes Christian theology with Eastern mysticism and mid twentieth century beliefs in mediums and psychics.

My bookshelves are becoming populated with metaphysical books. I thought “New Age” thinking was really new—like maybe since I started reading about it in the 1990’s. Not so. Emmet Fox published Power Through Constructive Thinking in 1940 and is touted as one the greatest spiritual leaders of the century. And metaphysics itself goes back centuries.

This is yet another book about the power of positive thinking (along with positive action). Fox tells us that our limitations or weakness are of no account. “You are only the channel through which the Divine action takes place, and your treatment will really be just the getting of yourself out of the way.” (p 133)

As he did with The Sermon on the Mount, Fox explains Biblical teachings in terms of original language and explanation of metaphor.

Power Through Constructive Thinking is a more compelling read than The Sermon on the Mount.

Many years have passed since the author shared these truths in his generation. They are still relevant today for those who are still seeking spiritual insights that can add to the depths of their own experiences of faith. Actually, this is what the book is all about "faith." Whether one agrees with .every area of thought he touches upon, or of the way he categorizes his concepts. When he focuses upon the essence of his primary emphasis in each chapter he takes you back to a scriptural reference and solidly plants his feet on the instructions of that particular verse. One thing the thoughtful reader can perceive about Emmett Fox as he reads this book is that the man was full of faith. Read it, don't try to dissect it according to your religious background or denomination, just be open to the spiritual knowledge in the use of faith that he has shared.

I met a lot of interesting people when I was a reporter. It's one of the few things I miss about the profession. One of the most interesting was a woman I met on Weir Farm. She mentioned this book (and maybe gave it to me; I can't remember) and I'd put it aside and stumbled upon it this summer and it seemed just right for me at the time. It was.
Essentially a series of essays about thinking and prayer, I liked what Emmett Fox says about the power we have to control our own thinking and how that does change the way we go about life. I'd recommend to anyone interested in their own spiritual path. Although the part about reincarnation was strange - as Fox said it would be for those of us in the West.

This is a terrific book for anyone looking for Spiritual Enlightenment and wants to better their lives through a closeness to God. The book "The Secret" was good in that it allowed people to be aware that there is a way of improving our lives by thinking differently. Unfortunately, it really did not teach people "how" to make their lives better or the ways to attract health, prosperity and happiness. This book is a very straight forward teaching tool but is also deep enough to give the reader and understanding on how our relationship to our Source makes all the difference.

This is a collection of pamphlets the Emmet Fox wrote. The first third of the book is analysis of several Psalms. The second third is the way to pray and meditate, and the last third is a description of reincarnation. I found the first two-thirds very interesting and the last third pretty far out there.

Although this book contains some essays and writings found in other books, it was well worth the read and reread. He is my spiritual compass, and I cannot read enough of his ideas and interpretations. His explanations of the Bible and its teachings will leave the reader in awe.

A preciously enthusiastic Depression-era pep talk, really a collection of essays mystically interpreting Christian principles. The one on Life After Death is the only one I struggled to get through.
