Like most of you here, books are my life. Reading is a passion, but writing is the biggest part of me. Balance is my greatest challenge, as I love my family, friends, animals and home, but also love traveling to meet my readers. Hope I meet many of you soon!
This is a prequel to the Love Lies Beneath series. It introduces us to 23yr-old Tara and when she meets Graham. I’m writing this after reading books 1 & 2, and honestly, don’t see the purpose. Other than explaining Tara’s feelings towards Graham… which isn’t needed because he has such a small part in the books… it adds nothing.
Since this story is so short, I can't let my review be longer than the story itself -- so I'll be brief. I adore everything I've read from Hopkins, and I especially love all that she manages to convey through her style of verse, which was not present in this story.
Ellen Hopkins without the verse just felt like a cheap Harlequin story here. Absolutely nothing special. What feels emotional and important in her regular style just felt overdone and weird in regular prose.
I was excited to read Loves Lies Beneath, but now I'm thinking....
While I did like that it added some understanding as well as depth to the relationship of/between Tara and Graham, I was not a fan of how it was written. I definitely prefer Hopkins when its written in verse as opposed to being written in paragraph format.
I wanted to read Love Lies Beneath, but I'm not that sure after reading this, quite frankly, but I may still give it a try anyway.
Extremely short story. With that said it was good and gave insight as to why Graham and Tara have such drama between the two. I loved the books love lies beneath and sin such as this I'd definitely recommend reading those first before reading this because it can be hard to follow and connect the stories.
For a short novella there was A LOT of emotions going through my mind. It didn't take long for it to get to the spice factor, and also for Graham to get what he deserved. I had a feeling from the first page that I wasn't going to like him. Spoiler alert, he sucks. Can't wait to dig into the rest of the series to see how far it'll go until Tara and Melody either forge together to ruin Graham or how they choose to handle the situation. I'm really interested to see their dynamic (T & M) or if they even have a sister relationship at all.
I'd say it left a plot hole in Love Lies Beneath, and maybe it did, but coupled with the fact that I read the latter first and already have the understanding that Tara is not exactly the most reliable narrator, it doesn't affect my love for Love Lies Beneath. As for On the Rocks itself, I don't feel I wasted my time reading it, but I wouldn't be hurt if I hadn't read it, either.
This (very) short story is a prequel to the Love Lies Beneath series. I’ve noticed that many readers were encouraged to read this before the other books. WHY?! Everything in this story is eventually covered in the series, thus it ruins some of the suspense and adds nothing new. Read it after reading the series, if you must, but it did nothing for me.
I am a fan of Ellen Hopkins' work and was interested in reading this prequel. Its rating would have been higher had it not been so complicated to get ahold of it. The overall story was good, the formating was okay, and it left me wanting more as a reader.
I enjoyed this and am hopeful one day this will be a full book. It would be a great story and really interesting to get more of a backstory to Love Lies Beneath.
Although this is a very short piece (a one-shot, if you will), and not completely necessary, it does add more context to certain relationships in the full-length novels of the series.
Nice little foot note to the series, but I expected a little more story. I was very surprised it was over before it ever really started. Definitely glad I read this after I read "Love Lies Beneath".
A short trip into the world of the characters to be explored in love lies beneath. Here we see the beginning of graham as he hooks up with Tara only to find she is his girlfriends sister

I started to read "Love Lies Beneath" when I saw this short story and how other readers stated that they wish they would have read "On The Rocks" first. So I guess this is an opener or a back story to "Love Lies Beneath". It was a good story but it was very short. It definitely makes you want to know what happens, so on to the real book now.
Free short stories by great authors are always a must read. I'm glad I found out about this before reading Love Lies Beneath, because it was nice reading a short story about the main character. And of course, this was a super short story so it definitely left me curious.
