I loved this collection, edited by Ann Charters. She was until recently a professor at my undergrad institution. What an intelligent, fiery, opinionated, and well-spoken woman! I took her class, The Short Story, and she taught from this book! One of the few times when I have NOT felt it was self serving only for a professor to assign their own book - in this case, it was the perfect supplement to great lectures and discussions. Great contextual information for each story, and wonderful insights! As an environmental biology major, Charter's english/humanities class was a breath of fresh air! I still pick up the book often to read a story I know will be wonderful and representative of a great literary tradition.

Ann Charters did a great job editing this. Its great having critical essays by the writers as well as their stories. A more inclusive selection of writers than other compilations I've seen.
