I've talked about this series in previous reviews - how it is slice-of-life, kind of stream-of-consciousness, a total comfort read - so I'm not going to go back into all that here. It's book 13, if you're still here, you understand what you're getting. :)
There's a HUGE cast of characters in this series, and one bummer is that if you're caught up to current in the series, in the months between releases, the details get soft and so I spend a chunk of the new book trying to remember who everyone is. Some kind of short summary at the head would go MILES toward helping this issue. But anyway! On to the book review!
There's a fair bit of crying in this one, but that's the norm for the series. There honestly wasn't as much as I expected, given that we're talking about Ruby. And I enjoyed it a lot, but didn't LOVE it the way I do so many of the books in this series. And I've been pondering why since I finished the book last night.
I think that I was in love until maybe the 65% mark or so, but then things got weirdly repetitive. Ruby had a first breakthrough and meltdown, and there were tears, recovery. And then it just happened again and again - I can't even count how many times someone said "this isn't over" or "this is just the beginning" or "worse is coming". And it isn't that I thought Ruby should have one moment and then miraculously be fixed - that isn't how trauma works, and this series has been incredibly graceful in how it treats trauma recovery as a long-term state of healing. It's just that in this book, it wasn't served by the repetition - it felt circular and anti-climactic. Normally, in this series, we have a slow build to the featured character's breakthrough moment, and then we have a recovery, and end the book knowing their healing journey has begun. Giving us a quarter of the book that is successive meltdowns and recoveries just made me feel tired, rather than emotional and joyful.
One thing from this book that I'm going to put in spoiler tags though:
The author comment at the end sounds like we're leaving Ghost Mountain for the next book, to go dig into Tressie and Russell (raven and cat land). I'm torn about it. I love revisiting this amazing cast in each book, but going elsewhere so I'm meeting new folks and not struggling to remember who everyone is...well, that also sounds nice. So I guess we'll see!
With much respect, Xander is not the only one who would appreciate a spreadsheet.
A gentle request if I may? Please make some lists (Or a mindmap? A flowchart? A multi-headed hydra of a Venn Diagram?) available to those of us who capitalism forces to work so that we can't re-read all the books every time a new one comes out to refresh our memories of all of the baby pack affiliations, attached gravity beams, seemingly endless K names and exactly who is one of Ronan's cubs. The Dunns may need their own page.
Ghost Mountain Shifters is one of my favorite series so I was thrilled to see a new book come out. This one tells Ruby’s story.
The whole series is about a traumatized wolf pack that starts healing in book one. So the reader basically joins the story after the villains have been dealt with and the story focuses on the aftermath. As the books go on and more of the characters heal, they build a home, community, and businesses and accumulate a variety of pack mates and allies - bears, cats, ravens, and hawks.
Ruby is book 13 in the series so it’s definitely not the place to start. There’s a huge cast of characters with a lot of backstories and it can be a little hard to keep them all straight. In addition many of them have their own POV chapters. The writing style isn’t for everyone. It’s a bit opaque and sometimes it isn’t clear what’s happening. A number of characters are psychic and sometimes respond to the internal thoughts of others. At times metaphors become real in ways that can be hard to follow. This series probably isn’t for someone who wants clear linear action, but I adore these characters and I love having a new story in their world.
Once again, there is a lot in this book/series that will gut you. This time around it's Ruby, who's coming back to her human side, little by little and in doing that she has to face the awful past and how she's ignored her kids while mired down in grief. The whole pack is there to help and in doing so, those that had their own issues with grief are able to work things out. It was interesting the way the different groups came to Ruby's and others, aid, how they held them tight during the worst of it, were there as they came back to themselves and figured out a new way forward. Through it all, family was at the key and not just blood family, but those we adopt because we want them. Nothing proved that more than the addition of Smoke, who really shouldn't work with this group, yet somehow does. It will be interesting to see where things go for the pack from here, now that one of the biggest hurts has been healed.
Finished. Sigh of contentment. For several hours all was right in my world. Now time for chores and work and other tasks of reality
Soon I will revisit this segment as well as the whole saga of the Ghost Mountain Shifters. As always this is a wonderful, complex chapter of healing, friendship and family, especially Dunns.
Highly recommend the whole journey which starts in Alpha.
I've been looking forward to Ruby's story for a long time. The build up has been a slow burn of her fury, her rage, her need for vengeance. I was waiting for the explosion that would end it all. Sadly it was more of a whimper than a bang! And, personally, I felt the author let Ruby down. She was more the a side arc than the main event! There was just too much other stuff going on. Too many characters. I love this Universe and I love the Wolves, the Polar Bears, Ravens, cats, Hawks... but sometimes less is more. Just a sample of some of the players in "Ruby"... Kezzie, Kelsey, Kel, Kennedy, Kenny, Ree, Reese, Reina, Rennie, Reilly, Ruby, Ryder, Sierra, Sienna, Flynn, Finn... and the waters are further muddied because we have Wolf Shifters who share their soul with a bear, a bear who believes he can be a Wolf, cats who are Ravens or is that Ravens who are cats, humans who have bears living inside them or is it Wolves?? It's become confusing and messy which, for me, spoilt the entire book. But. But! All my complaints aside, it didn't put me off enough not to finish it. And yes, I cried. And yes, I will absolutely be buying the next one because they are the Ghost Mountain Shifters so how could I not?
There should be a word or a phrase that a book reviewer can use to describe a book that you love so much that you don't want to see it end; yet you really need to know what happens. Those conflicted feelings apply to this book and the series as a whole, so far. Ruby has been molten rage for years, ever since her pup was threatened and her beloved mate was killed. No one has seen her human face in seven years, as she has been caged by her anger and grief in wolf form. But the healing pack senses that a change is coming for Ruby. What they don't know is the form it will take. Will she be consumed by hate? Will she explode in fury and damage everything around her? Will she seek revenge? The love and respect of her packmates and friends, and the slow build up to a surprising end are so worth the read. If you like shifter stories, with tales of courage, redemption and healing and love, along with wonderful characters and writing, find yourself a cozy spot and dive into this book. Better yet, if you haven't read the series (wish I could read it again for the first time); start with Alpha, and don't stop until you read your way through this story of Ruby!
Miss Faye's books take you on such an emotional roller coaster that you won't be able to shake off for a while. Her writing is so deep and meaningful and her stories we'll stay etched in your mind for a while. I love the ghost mountain pack with all of its complicated intricacies ,I'm actually finding it hard to keep up now with who is what anymore ?Wolf, bear , cat or raven? Moral of the story it doesn't matter what you are , you are accepted trauma and all you belong and everyone around you will have your back. Ruby's book was as emotional as the others in the series. My heart broke for her and Adrianna. I really would like it if the start of the book would have a characters break down who Is who , what are they ? Which pack they belong to ? What is their role in the pack? And such it's becoming hard to keep up with all the characters as there are so many and as much as i love that as much as it's getting a bit confusing cause of how long it's been between the books. But aside from that I enjoyed everything this author wrote.
This is very much a book about healing, not vengeance. The healing abilities of family and friends - regardless of blood relation - is the shining thread throughout the series. Many very touching moments for more characters than just Ruby. A few chuckles too as the cats and the Alpha (Hayden) play their parts as foils and comic relief.
I have a spreadsheet that I have to use to keep up with all the characters though. It can get very confusing and even info provided doesn't always clear up which pack or family someone comes from. I very much enjoy the series. I think I may have to go back and start it over again - it's been a while since I met Lissa and Hayden for the first time. I want a story about Kel, please?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is definitely one of those series that you have to read in order. There are way too many characters to try and learn the nuances of otherwise.
Another reviewer mentioned that they found the last part of the book repetitive, with repeated references of "this isn't over". I hadn't thought of it that way. It felt more to me that there were layers to the trauma/forgetting and those references were more about that. But once pointed out, I could see the repetition.
One good thing about this style of writing and the frankly enormous cast of characters is that there is always more story to tell without it getting old. I'm interested to see how the planned next story weaves in since it's not about the wolf shifters.
First, this series needs to be read in order to make sense. I've been waiting on Ruby's story, and it definitely didn't disappoint. So much happened that included most of the many characters that I can't say much without spoilers, which is something I don't do. If you have been keeping up with the series, you will enjoy the twists and unexpected turns in this story. I was enthralled with where the author led some of the characters. Keep some tissues handy because there will be tears; some happy, but most cathartic. I highly recommend this series, and this author! Another great addition to this story!
Ruby continues the series, and as usual brings out all the feels. Excellent writing.
This one is a lot - as expected if you've been reading the series. (And if you haven't, go start at book 1, do not try to read out of order.) I kept reading a bit, setting it down a bit to absorb, and repeat until done.
However, as others have mentioned, with all of the POV changes and with gaps waiting for a new books it's a bit hard to remember who everyone is. Some kind of character list for reference would be a great help.
This book is by one of my favorite authors and book 13 (!) of this series did not disappoint. It is essential to read this series in order, otherwise the character development will not make sense. In Ruby, the matriarch of the pack is featured. She is the wolf carrying the most trauma from the events of book 1 and after all this time, we finally get to see whether she can heal and if so to what extent. In book 13 we also get to see how her healing journey impacts her family and every member. This book brought tears and laughter. I am not including any spoilers.
So fun to visit the Ghost Mountain pack again. Ruby's story is a hard one. She has been lost in rage since the death of her husband (you have to read the series in order) and, in that rage, forgot herself and her pups. They have been waiting and hoping that she could make it back, without breaking, and rejoin them. Hard story to build and keep clear. This series is complex and has so many characters, but Faye manages to keep it moving forward and growing. Enjoy it so much.
I love this series to the depths of my soul and all its many characters. Audrey Faye writes them so well and evocatively, I can honestly say that I can't pick a favourite. From the first book with Hayden, Rio and Kel as it's main protagonists to this beautifully written story of Ruby, the world and character building has been exceptional and you feel as though you are right there with everyone. I have frequently re-read them and have a feeling I will do so again whilst waiting for the next book.
I still love the Ghost Mountain pack, but as the series progress the amount of persons you have to keep track off gets almost too big and overwhelming. But the biggest problem I find is that you get far too many different viewpoints. For every new chapter you get a different person's viewpoint which makes the story weirdly abrupt and chopped. And how come the alphas of all the different packs spend all their time at Ghost Mountain? Shouldn't they look after their own packs?
Such a great addition to the Ghost Mountain Series. I always enjoy these books and wish I could visit with the pack. If you haven't read any yet I do recommend starting from the beginning and giving yourself time to meet all the characters and their histories. There are so many you want to have as friends in your life. I have reread many of the series and will do so again and again
I love this series in general but there are so many characters it can become a bit chaotic and unfocused. Of course as in all families what affects one affects all but perhaps one book is not the place to include every perspective. That said I love the series and look forward to the next book.
My only issue with a new Ghost Mountain Shifters book is that I run out of tissues so quickly. I loved this book. It has left me with so many additions to my wish list. Is a mate for Kel in the works? Is the friendship between Shelley and Kenny going to evolve? Is the new cat/raven romance going to be developed more? My biggest wish is for Audrey Faye to write more quickly!
I love all the characters and how they deepen each book. I love the psychology used. I still struggle with the change in person talking and have to flip back to see who's saying what at times. I'm happy for Bailey and Ruby, well and the whole darn pack!! I eagerly await the next book.
I miss reading the paper version of these books, but nothing detracts from my enjoyment of (and tears over) the Ghost Mountain pack’s actions. Go Ruby!
Audrey Faye is one of my favorite authors and once again her work did not disappoint me. I loved the way she keeps all the characters alive by incorporating them into all her books. Amazing job!
As with everyone of these books. I love the continued exploration and the learning of truly what makes a family. But we need some sort of spreadsheet because who belongs to who is getting all twisted in our brains.
This series is on my automatic must read list. It was a lovely visit. Don’t get me wrong, its not all cozy fantasy, serious issues crop up, but are handled with grace.
I loved these books but as they’ve progressed they’ve gotten too messy with multiple characters povs. Now the pack is bigger there are just too many. They’ve also all become mystical. Not for me anymore.
Love this latest addition to a series that has a hold on my heart...cannot wait for the next adventure!!! Ruby and Rennie are the two most complex characters that truly deserve their moment in the sun of healing and peace.
Ruby comes home. Her children rejoiced in finally having a mother present. More comes into being. A great writer, and a great bear😍. Ready for the next installment of Ghost Mountain Wolf Shifters.
