Princess Bari
In a drab North Korean city, a seventh daughter is born to a couple longing for a son. Abandoned hours after her birth, she is eventually rescued by her grandmother. The old woman names the child Bari, after a legend telling of a forsaken princess who undertakes a quest for an elixir that will bring peace to the souls of the dead. As a young woman, frail, brave Bari escapes North Korea and takes refuge in China before embarking on a journey across the ocean in the hold of a cargo ship, seeking a better life. She lands in London, where she finds work as a masseuse. Paid to soothe her clients' aching bodies, she discovers that she can ease their more subtle agonies as well, having inherited her beloved grandmother's uncanny ability to read the pain and fears of others. Bari makes her home amongst other immigrants living clandestinely. She finds love in unlikely places, but also suffers a series of misfortunes that push her to the limits of sanity. Yet she has come too far to give in to despair.

71 books334 followersHwang Sok-yong (황석영) was born in Hsinking (today Changchun), Manchukuo, during the period of Japanese rule. His family returned to Korea after liberation in 1945. He later obtained a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Dongguk University (동국대학교).
In 1964 he was jailed for political reasons and met labor activists. Upon his release he worked at a cigarette factory and at several construction sites around the country.
In 1966–1969 he was part of Korea's military corps during the Vietnam War, reluctantly fighting for the American cause that he saw as an attack on a liberation struggle.

Ne yazık ki Kore Edebiyatı ülkemizde hiç tanınmıyor. Tanınabilmesi için gereken asgari şartlar da oluşmuş değil zaten. Misal daha iki hafta önce çıkan bu kitap, Kore Edebiyatından Türkçeye çevrilmiş on dokuzuncu eser olma özelliğini taşıyor. Koskoca bir ülke edebiyatından henüz on dokuz tane eser çevrilmiş durumda, ne acı! Han Kang'ın 'Vejetaryen' ile dünya çapında yakaladığı başarı, sanırım biraz önünü açacak Koreli yazarların. En azından Hwang Sok-yong'un kitabının yayımlanabilmesi, bana kalırsa tamamen buna dayanıyor ve umarım devamı gelir.
Çeviri koltuğunda Koreceden çeviri yapabilen iki çevirmenden biri ve aynı zamanda en yetkini olan S.Göksel Türközü var. Çevirileri arasında stil olarak bir istikrar olmadığını görüyorum. Bence Göksel Türközü çevirilerinde, çevirdiği yazarın orijinalindeki anlatımına Türkçesel karşılık bulmaya gayret ediyor. Zira bu benim üçüncü ya da dördüncü Türközü çevirisi okumam ve hepsinin hissettirdiği bambaşkaydı.
Hwang Sok-yong Türkçede ilk kez okuma fırsatını bulduğumuz isimlerden. Diğer Güney Koreli yazarlardan ayrı olarak, Hwang'ın kimlik ve yurt kavramlarına yaklaşımı daha farklı. Güney ya da Kuzey diye ayırmadan kendini Koreli olarak tanımlayan yazar, eserlerinde de bu çember etrafında çok sık dönmüş ve bunu doğru bir şekilde dile getirmiş olmalı ki, hem Kuzey de hem de Güney de en sevilen yazarlardan biri şuanda. Ben açıkçası kitabı okurken yazarın hayatını çok merak ettim. Beni sürekli olarak yazara doğru itti metin. Bunun üzerine yaptığım araştırmalarda, yazarın hayatının zor bir sürgünde geçtiğini gördüm. O yüzden esere sinen 'öteki' kavramının, nedenlerini nasıllarını daha iyi anlamlandırabildim.
Çok sayıda esere sahip olan Hwang Sok-yong'un uluslararası başarı kazanmış sekiz eserinden bir tanesi 'Prenses Bari'. 2007 senesinde Kore'de yayımlanan 'Prenses Bari', 2015'te İngilizce'ye çevrilmiş; sonrasında da diğer dünya dillerine çevrilmeye başlanmış. Kitaba ismini veren Prenses Bari aslında Kore mitolojisinde yer alan bir karaktermiş. Ben bunu araştırdığımda, karşıma çok iyi tanıdığım bir başka mitolojik karakterin çıktığını gördüm: Kharon. Bildiğiniz üzre Kharon, ölülerin ruhlarını kayığıyla bir yerden bir yere taşıyan, hiçlik komutanı, para azmanı bir varlıktır. Korenin Prenses Bari efsanesi de buna oldukça benziyor ancak elbette Uzak Doğu'dan çıkmasına alıştığımız o yoğun sofistike yaklaşım burada da var. Zaten zaman zaman fantastikleşen öykü, bunu ancak bir ayağını yasladığı doktrinlerle sınırlar içinde tutmayı başarıyor. Yine 2017 senesinde yayımlanan başka bir kitap olan Natsuo Kirino'nun 'Tanrıçanın Günlüğü' romanını anımsattı bana sık sık. Temelde ise, net bir sistem eleştirisi görüyoruz. Sisteme, Bari ile direniyor Hwang Sok-yong. İlk yarısını çok beğenerek okudum kitabın. O ilk yarıda, Kuzey Kore'de geçen bir kurmaca öykü okutuyor ve Kuzey Kore'nin baskıcı ülke profili net bir şekilde veriliyor. Sonrasında sessizce direnmeye başlayacak Bari'yle özdeşleşmemiz için tohumları atıyor. Bu anlamda tarihsel arka planı derinlikli olmasa bile, son derece ilgi çekici olduğundan bana keyif verdi.
Göçmenlik, ötekilik, terör, devlet, kimlik problemi... Hepsinin başrolde olduğu bir çatışmalar yumağı bu öykü. Hiçbir özgürlüğü olmayan, sadece yaşama hakkı için, en sert savaşlardan birini vermekle hayatını geçiren Bari'nin öyküsü bu. Aynı zamanda insanların ayaklarına bakıp, hayatlarını güzelleştirebilen; herkesten farklı antik bir ruhu içinde taşıyan özel bir kızın öyküsü.
Totaliter ve sefil Kuzey Kore; acımasız insanlarla dolu Çin; son çare olarak görünen içinde debelenilen ama asla oraya ait olunamayan Avrupa. Çağın konjonktürüne çok iyi uyan bir öykü yazmış yazar. Beğenmediğim, karikatür bulduğum bazı yerleri oldu ama bunlar bahsetmeye değecek nitelikte değil:)
Yazar senelerce Pyongang ve Seul hükümetlerinin bir araya gelmesi için çalışmalar yürütmüş, çok kere iki ülke ile de görüşmüş. Hatta Kuzey Kore ile yaptığı görüşmeleri yüzünden suçlu bulunmuş ve Güney'de hapse atılmış. Bu konuda yazması konusunda sansürlenmiş. Fakat buna rağmen vazgeçmemiş, böyle bir eser ortaya koymuş. Bu çabası ve hala verdiği savaşı bence çok güzel ve değerli.
Kore'den daha çok eser çevrilmesi için, hali hazırda çevrilmişleri okuyalım lütfen.

La primera parte de este libro me gustó muchísimo. El autor nos narra a través de un cuento tradicional protagonizado por una princesa, la terrible infancia y juventud de Bari.
La novela comienza en los años 90 en Corea del Norte y va a mostrarnos la durísima vida de Bari y su familia, la hambruna, represión, cómo la niña escapa a China y posteriormente emigra ilegalmente a Londres.
En 300 páginas el autor habla de inmigración, terrorismo y prostitución de manera cruda pero sin perder ese tono de realismo mágico que lo hace todo más facil de digerir.
Reconozco que lo que menos me gustó de toda la novela fue el final (que me pareció apresurado y muy poco satisfactorio), aún así me parece un libro interesante por cómo contrapone la cultura y costumbres coreanas con las musulmanas, por cómo muestra esa mezcla de etnias en Londres y la vida en Corea del Norte, pero especialmente por poner el foco en el tráfico de personas.
Es una novela difícil y muy dramática. Pero que habla de cosas que están pasando ahora mismo desde un punto de vista diferente, merece la pena.

Princess Bari is a translated South Korean novel, and the coming of age tale of a North Korean girl, Bari, who escapes with her family to China during the famine before finding herself illegally moving to London. Hwang Sok-yong deals with politics, family trauma and war, drawing out and examining the struggles of refugees, and the politicisation of their plight. Some of the fantasy elements went a little over my head, but I still enjoyed this as border fiction, particularly for it's rendering of North Korea before and after the Korean War, and it's discussion around war and the response from western countries to its victims.

İyi ki çevrilmiş de okuyabilmişim. Kuzey / Güney ayırt etmeden kendini Koreli olarak tanıtan bir yazar. Barış isteği yıllar süren sürgün, hapisle pekişmiş bir yazar. Vazgeçmemiş, umut etmiş. Yazılarına da 'öteki' işlemiş. Kore - Çin- İngiltere yolculuğu sırasında Bari'nin yaşadıkları alt metni dolu dolu olan, zaman zaman fantastikleşen bir kurguda verilmiş. İngiltere'ye ayak basmadan önceki kısımları daha çok sevdim.. Çeviri de gayet başarılı. Doğan Kitap 'ın daha çok eser basmasını bekliyorum..

Połączenie świata realistycznego ze światem magii było bardzo ciekawym pomysłem, z resztą bardzo dobrze zrealizowanym, jednak nie przywiązałam się do tej historii. Szybko o niej zapomnę.

바리데기 by 황석영 (Hwang Sok-yong) has been translated as Princess Bari by the excellent Sora Kim-Russell.
Overall, Princess Bari was a worthwhile read but didn't quite work for me.
That's largely because of the uneasy blend of three different elements: a story of his heroine Bari's struggles in daily life in North Korea, near to the Chinese border, which then shifts to her subsequent life as an illegal immigrant in the UK, and, interwoven throughout, a shamanistic tale of the eponymous Princess Bari.
One can see what 황석영 is trying to do - as the opening quote suggests, the story of people crossing borders, whether over the river into China to forage for food, or forging a new life in Europe, is universal, and the mythical element adds an extra, unique, element to the story while allowing him to soften the otherwise horrific details - but it felt like three separate novels.
The part set in North Korea will perhaps be the most appealing and is the more authentic. I enjoyed both the flavour of Korean life that I recognise from the South - seaweed soup (미역국) given to mothers after birth, the significance of a child's 100th day (백일) "when babies are said to be fully among the living", filling a porcelain bowl with water to intercede with the gods, Americans as "big noses" (양키 코쟁이), chocolate biscuits with marshmallow inside from the South (몽쉘), lots of exclamations of Aigo (아이구), adding -ah (-아)when calling someone's name, eating sujebi (수제비) - and the very distinctive hardships of life in the North. I frequently had to remind myself that this novel starts in the 1980s, not the 18th century, when one reads about famines.
My contrast, the part in England, while quite powerful and well written, felt less authentic (the odd Americanism in the translation didn't help) and certainly less original. Hwang tries to bring in the wider immigrant story, including that of different races such as her Muslim husband. Last year's Booker shortlist The Year of the Runaways, for example, did the same thing much better.
The Princess Bari story is a traditional Korean myth, and having been named after her, our heroine increasingly finds her life, and particularly her dreams, coinciding with the story. The shamistic elements of the tale give a unique insight into ancient culture, but the implications for the present-day Bari, which formed an increasingly significant role as the novel progresses, felt ultimately like something from a Paul Coelho novel. And the fairy-tale quality sat uneasily alongside stories of rape, drug abuse, infant death, starvation and exploitation.
The novel almost concludes "Our lives were so peaceful that we nearly started to believe the world had changed" only for one final, real-life, twist as the events of 2005 bring terror, and the likelihood of anti-Islamic sentiment, to London's streets.

Çok naif ve içten bir dili var Prenses Bari'nin. Üzüntülü bir öyküsü olan Bari'nin Lirik ve spirituel öğelerle Kuzey Kore'den göç etmesi ve yaşamını önce Çin ve daha sonra da Londra'da sonlandırmasını anlatıyor Sok-yong. Keyifli okumalar!

Bardzo przeżyłam historię Bari, jest w wielu monetach niezwykle poruszająca i ciągle aktualna.
Obecny realizm magiczny - bywa, że to ryzykowny wybór, ale w tej powieści sprawdził się bardzo dobrze. Tradycyjny mit wędrówki ukazany w nowoczesnym świetle. To nie jest szczęśliwa historia i szczęśliwego zakończenia również brak, chociaż nadzieja wciąż się tli.
"Na wojnie nie ma zwycięzców. To, co żywi określają mianem sprawiedliwości, jest zawsze kwestią stronniczą."
"Prawda jest taka, że każdy z nas, każde ciało już za życia doświadcza piekła - tutaj, na ziemi. Nienawiść jest piekłem, które sami sobie gotujemy."

Princess Bari is a harrowing, magical tale of a young girl's resilience through 'living Hell'. The story combines a modern day plight of one North Korean girl's journey to the west and a traditional Korean shamanistic story of travelling through Hell and back. The traditional Korean story that is intertwined with the modern day 'Hells' that Bari goes through on her journey is somewhat reminiscent of the tale of Orpheus.
One thing I have tried to teach myself when reading Hwang Sok-yong's books is to don't hold my breath waiting for a happy ending, but I just couldn't help myself wishing and waiting for Bari to get her happy ending. The book does not exactly end on a completely sad note, but it leaves you thinking about how preciously you should guard and regard what good you have in your life, yet never forget that there are people out there who are suffering. Having personally lived in London, I thought that Hwang's portrayal of the city was spot on and made me reminisce about its idiosyncrasies.
This book was so skillfully translated and Sora did a wonderful job weaving the appropriate Korean words in with the English giving the book a sense of tradition and respect for the ancient source material. The little splashes of Korean-ness helped to ground and specify a very universal refugee story firmly to Korean traditions and culture, it made me think that this is the sort of book that Goethe and Herder were speaking of when they created their theory of 'World Literature'. Hwang's book and Sora's translation really seek to explain a truth in life through a specific Korean example, and they do it beautifully.
One thing I have tried to teach myself when reading Hwang Sok-yong's books is to don't hold my breath waiting for a happy ending, but I just couldn't help myself wishing and waiting for Bari to get her happy ending. The book does not exactly end on a completely sad note, but it leaves you thinking about how preciously you should guard and regard what good you have in your life, yet never forget that there are people out there who are suffering. The Buzz
There was absolutely no buzz for Princess Bari in the book community. It's one of those indie books (because its a translated book from Korean) that I happened to see and boy was I glad I did. I LOVE translated books and stories based on cultural mythology and folklore so I knew that I had to read it.
"The story of Princess Bari is handed down by word of mouth in Siberia, Northern Manchuria and all over the Korean Peninsula. ... Princess Bari was born with the destiny of going to the end of the world of the dead to get the waters of life to save the world from deadly disease." -From the author on the Princess Bari myth
My Experience
Honestly my expectations were totally out of whack because of the premise. It says sooooo much about what happens to Bari that you are quite thrown off when you are actually reading the story and it doesn't really go anywhere but what the premise already tells you. It took me quite a but of time to adjust because of this.
So I highly suggest DO NOT READ THE PREMISE! Odd I know... But here is the premise according to the author from an article he wrote about the book that is PERFECT!
"Princess Bari is about a North Korean girl who loses her family when young, crosses the border, wanders all over China, crosses the ocean to reach London, and eventually meets and marries a Muslim man."
This is a journey story with the myth of Princess Bari woven into it and brought up to date. It's a sort of historical because its set in the time just before and up to when the twin towers come down in America. That gives you a gauge about when then is happening in North Korea... so that really is quite recent!! Yet the story reads like its about a lot earlier time... that's because conditions are not good and Bari and her family are right in the middle of it!
To me this is a very adult book. Yet Bari was compulsively easy to read about. I loved her and her time with her dog and grandmother. Reading about her youth I became quite caught up and just came to love her so much.
However, there is a surreal quality to the story that comes out quite strong near the end and I found it too grown up for me. I get the point of it logically and I applaud it, I really do, its a neat way to show dealing with grief. But it was hard for me to feel in my heart.
Blessedly there is more after that passage that tied up Bari's journey in a satisfactory but highly realistic way. I don't regret reading Princess Bari and I love that I got a glimpse into Korean literature. If you want to see inside another culture and the way they think then you need to give Princess Bari by Hwang Sok-yong a try.
The Premise
This is one of those books about immigration. If you love the idea of reading about a young woman's journey from Asia to London then jump on this book... I shouldn't need to persuade you beyond sharing that this is truly a moving immigration journey.
However, if your nose scrunches up at the idea of reading about illegal immigration then you'll need a little more persuasion. That's where the mythology and the magical realism comes in.
We start with Bari's birth and its quite fascinating. We needed this entire time in North Korea seeing what she went through and the events that made up her formative years so that when the hardship came we could endure along with her. It's a rough and harrowing journey. It makes your heart bleed and you wonder... Could I have endured what Bari did?!
Running through this very human story about the coming of age of a young North Korean woman is the very real parallel to Princess Bari's myth. It's not disease that drives our Bari but famine. And while she tries to hold onto those she loves Bari is only able to plunge forward along her path. Along the way she and we learn she has some abilities that help her to survive. It's beautiful and real and raw and even though she has skills only a shaman would have we can relate to how she uses them.
An immigration journey wouldn't be complete without a love story. Once we are safe and settled we want happiness too. This is really where a ton of culture comes into Princess Bari. I would not want to find love the way Bari did... BUT that is part of her culture and her Muslim husband's culture. I found the part his grandfather played in their relationship also quite true to Korean culture and loved seeing how the Muslim culture paralleled.
Cover & Title grade -> C+
The cover caught my eye for sure but its just too traditional. Princess Bari isn't set in the 18th century and yet the covers gives you a distinct historical feel. I do love a cover that gives you a sense of the culture involved but it should reflect the more modern feel of the story. I appreciate the previous English edition cover a little more... it gives you more of a sense that Bari is going on a journey even though the design isn't to my taste. As for the title I think it works because the shamanism aspect to the story links Bari's time in North Korea and China to her time in London. It's what helps her survive.
Why was Princess Bari an unusual Immigration story?
-The Shaman Magic allowing Bari to cope.
-The contrast of North Korea to China to London.
-The Korean culture paralleling Muslim culture.
-The surreal myth woven so strongly into the end.
The Writing
For such brutal topics such as starvation, rape, drug abuse, infant death, and exploitation Princess Bari explores them in a fascinatingly distant sort of way. The magical realism really made them more endurable on Bari's part but also the reader. I really appreciated the way the author combined what are very realistic experiences... starving in Korean, being exploited in China and being illegal in London and showed us how culture comes to bear in her mindset but also in the other immigrants mindsets as well.
While the immigration journey isn't a new theme Princess Bari does some really fascinating things with the North Korean plight, the immigration issue in London and crossing cultures all wrapped up in an intriguing myth about saving the world and why we have to live life for the moment and not just the end.

Strangely, the complaints I had with this are very similar to those I've had with many books I've read this year; in short, that I loved one half of the book, but the found the other lacking or at odds with the rest of the book. I really enjoyed the first half of Princess Bari, which tells the story of a young girl growing up in North Korea, during the time of the great famine of the 1990s. Bari is the seventh daughter of a couple desperate to have a son, and was named after a princess from one of the stories her grandmother likes to tell. Along with the moving portrayal of the harsh realities for this people in this time, in this part of the book there is also a very slight supernatural/magical realist element to the plot, both through the folk tales Bari's grandmother tells, and through Bari's own dreams and experiences as well, as it turns out she has a gift which means she can communicate with dead spirits and see the past lives of people around her. This half of the story is rich and beautifully done. Unfortunately, a major event in Bari's life, sends the story in a whole new direction, . The theme of could have been very interesting to explore, but I felt the execution wasn't as tight as in the first half of the book. This half seemed strangely rushed, underdeveloped and dull in comparison. Furthermore, the magical realist elements become more important towards the end, , and her dreams become a larger focus and increasingly more bizarre. This may just be my own personal taste, however, as I prefer when magical realist books are more firmly routed in reality than in the fantastical elements. Sadly, the ending left me feeling unsatisfied.

Магічний реалізм радше в дусі Рушді, ніж латиноамериканців, в основі корейська легенда про принцесу Парідеґі, праматір шаманів, яка подорожувала у пошуках живої води через царство мертвих. Головна героїня далекий пращур принцеси з тим самим іменем, якій не пощастило народитись на початку 1980-х у Північній Кореї. Перша третина роману — принади режиму (гине вся родина), дві інші третини — важке життя нелегальної мігрантки в Китаї та Британії, поміж злиднями Парідеґі ходить в шаманські тріпи. Це була б дуже мила історія з майже гепіендом, якби автор не підводив читача до неоригінальних і сумнівних думок що у війнах не буває переможців, всі релігії рівноцінні, бог тєрпєл і нам вєлєл і треба просто бути добрішим, щоб життя наладилось.

Bari là tên nàng công chúa thứ bảy trong truyện cổ Hàn Quốc với hành trình đi tìm nước trường sinh bất tử. Còn Bari ở ngoài đời là bé gái thứ bảy trong 1 gia đình ở Bắc Hàn mong con trai nhưng chỉ toàn con gái, thế nên Bari bị vứt ở bìa rừng và được chú chó cứu đem trở về nhà.
Bà nội đã đặt tên cho cô bé là Bari và kể cho cô nghe câu chuyện cổ tích, mà mãi sau này, khi đã trải qua cảnh phân ly gia đình, thấy người thân chết, trôi nổi từ Hàn qua Trung Quốc rồi bị bọn buôn người đưa sang Anh, làm việc quần quật để trả món nợ từ trên trời rơi xuống, Bari mới hiểu rằng: Câu chuyện cổ tích về nàng công chúa Bari mà bà nghe hôm nào, dường như là lời tiên đoán và động viên cháu gái trong tương lai.
Không hiểu sao mình đọc quyển này của Hàn Quốc nhưng lại liên tưởng đến những bộ phim Ghibli: sắc màu thơ trẻ, nỗi buồn của chiến tranh và cái chết, khả năng ngoại cảm thấy linh hồn, một chút cổ tích giữa đời thật và một chút dịu dàng giữa những khắc nghiệt của thời cuộc.
Câu chuyện rất đẹp, rất buồn, rất kiên cường và rất nghiệt ngã, và cái kết mở như thực tế vẫn đang diễn biến tiếp tục. Bari đã được sinh ra và bị lớn lên giữa những biến cố thế giới từ Đông sang Tây, đã mạnh mẽ trôi theo dòng số phận luôn ngoài ý muốn, nhưng tất cả đau khổ của cô dường như luôn sẵn sàng bùng nổ với những ngưỡng chịu đựng mới. Cô bé nhìn thế giới với đôi mắt dễ chịu để khám phá nó, rồi quan sát nỗi đau khổ của mình bằng tất cả tình yêu thương chân thật.
Văn phong truyện (trong bản tiếng Việt) thật đáng mê: giản dị và đầy đủ, trong sáng và xúc động mãnh liệt. Đọc xong quyển này, mình muốn đọc ngay những tác phẩm khác của cùng tác giả.

To złożona powieść z motywem wędrówki, zaczynamy od szczęśliwego dzieciństwa głównej bohaterki, które spędziła z rodziną w Korei Północnej, potem jesteśmy świadkami jej ucieczki do Chin, następnie z Chin do Anglii i to tam pozostajemy do końca.
Bari jest medium. Potrafi porozumieć się ze zwierzętami, wejrzeć w czyjąś przeszłość czy skontaktować się ze zmarłymi, więc mamy tu też trochę elementów snu na jawie.
Na swojej drodze spotyka wielu ludzi, a autor poświęcił im należyty czas by nakreślić różnice między nimi, między ich pochodzeniem, zwyczajami i religią. Przyznam szczerze, że byłam zaskoczona, ale i pełna podziwu obserwując jak autor wzbogacał tę historię.
Główna bohaterka mknie do przodu, radzi sobie z trudnościami i stratą na swój sposób, będąc nielegalną imigrantką stara się przeżyć i być szczęśliwą, ale demony przeszłości bywają bezlitosne.
Od dzieciństwa w Korei Północnej, po dorosłość na emigracji.
Jest to książka bardzo bogata w zdarzenia, emocje, relacje, elementy kulturowe i szczegóły. Na tyle bogata, że w końcu zaczęła mnie męczyć, zwłaszcza szybkością występowania po sobie wydarzeń. To powieść wymagająca od nas uwagi, bo łatwo zgubić w niej to co istotne, zwłaszcza, gdy część rzeczy nie jest wyrażana bezpośrednio.
Podobała mi się, ale czuję zawód, że całość akcji nie rozgrywała się w Korei, bo ta część z dzieciństwa była dla mnie fenomenalna. Potem zostałam rzucona w wir znanej mi rzeczywistości i mój entuzjazm stopniowo opadał, ale los Bari wciąż mnie interesował i chciałam się dowiedzieć, gdzie życie ją doprowadzi.
Lecz finalnie, okazało się, że to nie będzie "mój" kolejny żuraw 🥺

Princess Bari is a remarkable coming of age novel that speaks of hardship, courage and determination.
Hwang Sok-Yong writes with poignancy and humour as we follow Bari’s life narrated by Bari in a rational and undramatised way.
A reworking of the Korean mythological story of Princess Bari, an ancestral shaman and the seventh daughter of King Ogu, making it relevant to the 21st century.
Sok-Yong writes of impoverished North Korea and Bari’s remarkable survival in the forests of china, her horrific journey aboard a people smuggler boat to London, the lives of illegal immigrants and women forced into prostitution. Bari comes across many people, good and bad, and the story speaks of prejudice but doesn’t preach.
Bari at times accepts her life with wisdom beyond her young years.
” I realise that life means waiting, enduring the passage of time. Nothing ever quite meets our expectations, yet as long as we are alive, time flows on, and everything eventually comes to pass.”
Bari’s story is depressing at times however Bari faces what life throws at her with courage and hope. A sobering tale I would recommend to all.

Hwang Sok-Yong writes with poignancy and humour as we follow Bari’s life narrated by Bari in a rational and undramatised way.
A reworking of the Korean mythological story of Princess Bari, an ancestral shaman and the seventh daughter of King Ogu, making it relevant to the 21st century.
Sok-Yong writes of impoverished North Korea and Bari’s remarkable survival in the forests of china, her horrific journey aboard a people smuggler boat to London, the lives of illegal immigrants and women forced into prostitution. Bari comes across many people, good and bad, and the story speaks of prejudice but doesn’t preach.
Bari at times accepts her life with wisdom beyond her young years.
” I realise that life means waiting, enduring the passage of time. Nothing ever quite meets our expectations, yet as long as we are alive, time flows on, and everything eventually comes to pass.”

Првиот дел беше интересен и делуваше автентично. Ја следиме Бари и начинот на којшто преживува во Северна Кореја и подоцна Кина за време на големиот глад во Кореја во 90тите години од минатиот век. Во вториот дел од книгата Бари е нелегално пристигната во Велика Британија и дознаваме за сите нејзини непогоди. Веројатно ќе ставев и 3 ѕвездичка, да не беше „магичниот реализам“ којшто некако ми го уништи целото доживување и константно ме оттргнуваше од приказната.

4.5 rounded up because reasons*
For a while, I've been judging Hwang Sok-yong for Familiar Things and assuming I'd hate everything he's written but, hello, this is me acknowledging I was wrong. I loved his memoir, The Prisoner because of his recollection about him living, visiting North Korea, and meeting Kim Il-sung, and I found myself adoring Princess Bari for I found it to be a good depiction of what life in North Korea would be. Like, sure life in North Korea is sad, but Hwang could've gone to the grittier bits of the famine and sort of stayed away from them (while acknowledging them).
Princess Bari is a weird migrant story for it is about a North Korean refugee and it covers life in North Korea (the famine + escaping + life in China as an illegal """economic migrant"""), it parallels Korean culture with Muslim culture, deep-dives into illegal migrant communities in London, and it is intrinsically linked with Korean shamanism and the Princess Bari myth. It's a weird mix that still shocks me because it mostly worked? Yet the story flowed weirdly for me.
Anyhow, for what it's worth, I've been wanting to read proper fiction about North Korea for a while and I think this did it for meunlike The Orphan Master's Son. And I feel Hwang did show his knowledge about North Korea having lived there and visited, but also having been in London around those communities and learning from them. He did his field-work (though unintentionally) and it shows.

This was a wonderful read: it's both full of genuine emotion, dealing with the tragic background of running from North Korea and the countless people losing their lives to the famine and political brutality from back home, and inspiringly poignant and crafted in a majestic way, that blends visions of the underworld and folk tales with the realism of contemporary hot topics (illegal immigrants in the West, brothels, dirty survival, Islamic terrorism and the discrimination against Muslims etc.).
I read it breathlessly, in a day, while also cooking and spending time on domestic tasks, and it was a fresh and startling discovery. Looking forward to reading more from Hwang Sok-yong, he is definitely an amazing author.

Мені не вистачило об'єму і глибини в цій істор��ї, а магічний реалізм в якийсь момент став нагадувати битву екстрасенсів. Проте, це все ж таки непогана сучасна історія в епічній формі.

Açıkçası bu kitaba 2 yıldız vermekte zorlandım. Çünkü kitap zevkine güvendiğim insanlar tarafından oldukça beğenilmiş. Ama zevkler ve renkler mevzusu sanırım burada devreye girdi. Seven arkadaşlarımdan özür dileyerek;
Kitap aslında iki bölümden oluşuyor. Benim de beğenerek okuduğum ilk bölüm Bari'nin doğması ile başlayıp yasadışı göçmen olarak Londra'ya gitmek için bindiği gemiye kadar devam ediyor. İkinci bölüm ise gemideki yolculuk, Londra'ya varış, şebekelerin insanları en uygun yere satması (siyasi/ekonomik mültecilerin büyük çoğunluğunun modern dünyanın köleleri olduğunu hepimiz biliyoruz sanırım), müslüman bir dedeyle tanışması, dedenin torunuyla evlenmesi vs. olarak devam ediyor.
İlk bölümde gerçeküstü bir anlatım kullanılmış, hikaye güzel kurgulanmış, karakterler detaylı işlenmiş. Zaten iki yıldızı bu bölümün yüzü suyu hürmetine verdim.
İkinci bölümde ise gerçeküstü anlatıyı yer yer yine kullanmış fakat "gerçek" anlatımla o kadar uyumsuz, bağlantısız kalmış ki okurken "ne?", "ne oldu?"şimdiler baş gösteriyor. Dilini ise tarif etmem çok zor. Beni tanıyan şu cümlemden anlar: ben daha iyi yazardım be! Ben, mektup yazamayan ben :)
Anlatımda ise bir olayı/durumu anlatırken birden bire başka bir şey anlatmaya başladığı yerler var. Bununla beraber inanılmaz sayıda gereksiz sözcük ve detay var. Bir okur olarak bir kaç yerde bu bilgiyi niye vermiş ki dediğim, anlamlandıramadığım kalabalıklar vardı.
Bir de Müslümanlık hakkında neden verildiği anlaşılmayan bilgiler din kültürü ders kitabı kıvamında idi. Hiç bir edebi değeri ve kıymeti yok.
İkinci bölüm fazlasıyla aceleci yazılmış, ilk bölümde olan karakter detayları, olay katman ve derinliği ikinci bölümde yok olmuş. Sanırsın ki aynı yazarın elinden çıkmamış.
Son olarak yazar Bari'nin gemi yolculuğunu anlattığı bölümlerdeki vahşeti, diğer göçmenlerin yaşadığından küçük görmüş. Oysaki; açlık, susuzluk, havasız kalacak kadar küçük alanlara sıkıştırılmış olmak, dayak, tecavüz, toplu tecavüz kahramana bir güzel yaşatılmış sonra 'ama diğer mülteciler daha zor koşullarda buraya geliyorlar' demiş. Bu cümleyi kurmadan önce ne içtiniz bay yazar?
En çok üzüldüğüm ise zaten çok zor çeviri yapılan dillerden, kötü eserlerin türkçeye söylenmesi. Bu kadar emek daha iyi eserlere harcanmalı. Doğu edebiyatının bestseller'ini değil edebiyat eserlerini merak ettiğimizi yayınevlerinde tanıdıkları olan elden ele ulaştırsın.
İyi okumalar.

O carte în care legenda se îmbină cu viața. Fetița Bari din Coreea de Nord care îndură multe greutăți și întâlnește mulți oameni, buni și răi, încearcă să-i înțeleagă și să-i ajute. Cartea e despre complexitatea lumii și despre cum oamenii simpli suferă pentru ambițiile celor de la putere.
Totuși, cartea îmbină realismul magic care mie nu prea îmi este pe plac, iar pe la sfârșit îmi aduce aminte de "Alchimistul" lui Coelho, ceea ce la fel nu-mi prea place.
