I thought I was done. my End I couldn’t take my eyes off her as the bullet tore through me, leaving me with nothing but the hope that I had done enough to save her. The darkness tried to engulf me—to brand me as its own and drag me to my fate. my Darkness Waking to see her tear-stained face above me was enough to make my heart stutter. I was alive and free from that place—but not from the toll it had taken on my mind and body. my Strength My story should have ended, but one woman kept standing in the way of that. The only way I could have her was to find a way to put the darkness to rest.
"Skye's writing takes darkness and gives it spice and romance." ~ Pepper Winters, NYT Bestselling Author
Named a Rising Star in Romance by iBooks in 2015, bestselling author Skye Callahan uses fiction to explore the darker aspects of human nature. Skye's first dark romance Irrevocable was named a Top Read of 2014 by Shayna Renee's Spicy Reads, and continues to be a fan favorite.
Skye's love of reading and writing started at a young age when she was inspired by fellow Ohio native, R.L. Stine, to release her imagination by putting her own pen to paper. When I saw that Skye Callahan was writing a sequel to Irrevocable and that it would be from James' point of view, I was ecstatic. I felt like the ending of Irrevocable was a bit rushed so I was really looking forward to getting a deeper understanding of how James and Rose work through their issues and find their own version of a happily ever after.
"After the raid on the Retreat, thrust back into the real world-into his old life without the object of his desire-this is James' story..."
My heart hurt for James in this book. The Retreat was absolute hell for him and I desperately wanted him to move forward with his life and find happiness in a relationship with Rose. One thing that I loved about his point of view is that it shows you that he is selfless, heroic, that he cares deeply for Rose, and you see just how much the Retreat damaged him. His journey to finding redemption is grueling and it broke my heart to see how difficult it would be for James to be able to live life on his own terms again.
Bend, Don't Break is full of new material and this is NOT a retelling of the events in Irrevocable from James' perspective. One of my favorite aspects of this book was the suspenseful plot! I was hooked trying to figure out how the pieces of James' case fit together and identify who the real villains were. Skye Callahan took me completely by surprise with a couple of twists and I really enjoyed the unpredictability of the plot in the second half of the book =)
Overall, I would highly recommend Bend, Don't Break to those who enjoyed Irrevocable and want more insight into how Rose and James found closure after everything they survived during their time together at the Retreat. Both of them were left with emotional scars that would take time to heal from and a lot of work to come to terms with. I think you will be captivated reading James' perspective on this and Skye Callahan will keep you turning pages with the new unpredictable, suspenseful storyline. This was the perfect conclusion to James and Rose's story <3

I enjoyed Bend, Don't Break just not as much as Irrevocable. It didn't have me gripped as much.
It was good getting inside James head and how things affected him after getting out of The Retreat. The build up was great with how they were going to take the people from The Retreat down.
Trent and Miles both great characters and Rose one tough cookie to break.
Much of this book was actually not bad. It was mainly mystery-thriller-police type material, and I was very interested to see the aftermath for the MAN who had gone through the type of experience he had in the first book -- we frequently see women recovering from sex trafficking, but what about male undercover cops who have been forced to play the other role? I thought that should have been covered a lot more seriously with more significant consequences, but I liked the idea.
But then the author lost it, and nearly made me throw my computer across the floor. In the first book, Our Heroine was gang-raped twice -- the first time while tied to a bed and beaten with whip and cane, and the second time while tied to a table. So what does Our Hero do?? Ties her to a table and beats her (gently) with a spatula. And supposedly she enjoys it. SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE????????? Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Can we talk about Flashback City, and PTSD Central?????
And throughout, Our Heroine is fine with sex. After being gang-raped. Twice. Because, of course, our Hero has The Magic Penis.
Sigh.
I want to see a better author write a story with these characters.
I just finished Bend, Don't Break and what a way to finish this story! I just loved it. This is about Rose and James (AKA Silver and Kirk) from Irrevocable. It picks up right after things went down at the retreat but from James point of view. This is where you find out how things progressed from being on the inside and things even began. I don't want to give much away since I had a few WTF moments but just saying you have to read this series. You'll love it.
I understand why we had Rose's point of view in Irrevocable and James's in this one. It makes sense and you see why certain things had to be done the way that they did. You finally get your questions and thoughts answered and I couldn't have asked for it any other way.
James is my guy. He is still sexy and mysterious but now we know how he really feels about what he had to do. You really see his feelings and how he tries to overcome some things. He is just plain ole sexy. Rose is still my girl. She had changed so much from the very beginning but she had too. She had to get stronger for what she had to put up with. James and Rose for me complimented each other really well and wouldn't have asked for anything different with them.
I cannot wait to see what more lies ahead or at least hoping, crossing my fingers we get a story with Trent. James's partner. He added a lot to the story and it would be a shame if he didn't get his story.

You must read Irrevocable before reading Bend, Don’t Break. I loved Irrevocable, I thought about that book for days, even weeks after reading it. I was not disappointed with Bend, Don’t Break either. This book is James point of view and it picks up at the end of Irrevocable. I loved reading things from his point of view; it shed new light on some things. Rose and James have so much to work on recovering from their time at the Retreat, this book is filled with every emotion and it is an amazing read. I don’t want to give away any part of the story but if you read Irrevocable you must read this book, it was just as good if not better. I really hope that we will get a book about Trent next, he was such a great supporting character and he needs his story told.
Characters: The characters were well written and believable.
I am reading this book out of order for a challenge, but I will say I didn't find it dark at all. It seems like what they went through was dark, but this book isn't. There is some mild BDSM, and there is suicide and someone shoots at a house. But honestly wouldn't not tag it as dark.
This is a story about an FBI agent who went deep undercover to help fight human trafficking. This book takes place after he is out of undercover job, but now those he brought down might be after him and his girlfriend.
In Short - The first half is slow paced but becomes faster in the second half. - James' world is engrossing but heart breaking - Bend, Don't Break completes James' and Rose's story.
In Long For me this book is split into two halves when it comes to rating it and how much I enjoyed it. The first half of the book would probably be a 3.5 and the second half a 4.5.
The first half is quite slow paced and although I liked that it built on the story and went back in time I felt some scenes were just too slow and some chapters didn’t really add much to the actual story. It seemed the story was going somewhere but never lead too much until half way through.
About half way through the book I became totally engrossed into James’ world and being able to see things through his eyes made me fall in love with him even more! His a strong character but does let his vulnerable side show which made me fall in love with him even more. He has such a hard time in Irrevocable and the effects really show in this book. I just wanted to take all his pain away!
The second half of the book stepped up pace and really become completely gripping and thrilling. It was full of action and the storyline took a new and exciting direction.
Final Thoughts After Irrevocable I didn’t feel like things were finished or James’ and Rose’s story was complete. Bend , Don’t Break really added so much to their story and has left me with a fulfilled feeling. This, along with Irrevocable, is a must read.
I had the opportunity to read the first book in this series and I feel in love with Rose aka Silver and Kirk aka James. Their story was a dark one but it was beautifully written. I was so excited to learn that there was going to be a book 2 in this series and that this would be told in his POV. I absolutely love the way the author writes this series. She kept me captivated and deeply connected with the main characters and the side characters in the story. This book picks up where the first left off, after the raid on the retreat. The author takes readers on the inside being undercover and how it affects the mind. We get to find out answers to questions about what was happening on the retreat and how James reacted and the effect Rose and the situation had on him.
I fell in love with James in the first book but after reading this one, seeing his side of the story, I fell even more. James is having a hard time dealing with his actions and how he treated Rose, how deep down inside he craves some of that darkness. We see James struggle to come to terms with some of things he had to do in order to help the case and to keep himself and Rose alive. He knows that Rose means more to him than just a case. He fights to get back to a sense of normalcy and back to Rose the only light in his darkness. After being nearly shot to death while working as an undercover detective he is put under protective custody. His days and nights are spent flashing back to the days on the retreat of all the actions and degrading things Rose had to endure by his hand.
“Don’t give me that. I was there. There is no f****** way in h*** anyone hears about the things I did without some kind of opinion. I’m the bastard, the abuser, rapist, villain, liar, thief- and I get away with it all as far as the law and any official judgment are concerned.”
Things are far from over. When the girls from the retreat start turning up dead and missing, James is pulled back into the case. He wants to bring down the entire ring and everyone involved in the kidnappings. When Rose is hurt he does not give a damn about staying away from her. He needs to be there. He has this constant guilt of what happened between them but Rose sees things different.
“It’s impossible to make it so black and white. You survived. WE survived together. And as much as I’d like to erase some things. It’ll always be part of us. We both have a lot of work to do. We can’t exactly pick up where we left off and we can’t just forget what happened.”
“I hate seeing you hurt. Somewhere along the line, I should have prevented it from happening.”
“Rule one, no sex. Rule two, stop apologizing for things we can’t change. At lease I’m alive to have nightmares.”
While James and Rose work on their love and relationship the danger keeps getting closer. James, Trent, Rose and Fiona are all forced to take part in bringing the sex ring down. The author gives readers twists, turns, and betrayals that I never saw coming. We are taken inside the sex ring and shown the men that are behind the kidnappings and torture. These are no street thugs, no these men are big players. I absolutely loved this book and how the author took us not only back to the days in the retreat but also the days and months that follow. James will fight the devil himself to keep the woman he loves safe and away from danger. He does not want to fail her again. If you loved the first book you definitely want to be picking this one up.
“I chose to live, And I dare anyone to tell me that either of us made the wrong choices.”
This is what I wanted at the end of Irrevocable! I needed James’s POV. I love that Skye Callahan didn’t just retell Irrevocable from James’s POV either. Bend Don’t Break starts just after the raid happens. We don’t merely get a story though, we get James’s thoughts and feelings on everything that happened. I really needed that. Just as Irrevocable needed to be told from Rose’s POV, Bend Don’t’ Break begged to be told from James’s POV. With such an intense story, I need both POVs and Skye Callahan did a great job bringing each in at the right time.
The pace and tone of Bend Don’t Break is slower and more thoughtful than Irrevocable. It’s slow building, and it fits the story. I’m actually relieved that the pace isn’t fast and furious. Life after the raid is about healing and that takes time no matter how determined you are to move on. I will admit I was a bit anxious and couldn’t wait to get to the point when James and Rose finally come face to face again. I was half tempted to skim up until that point, and not because the story was slow it was just out of pure impatience on my part. I was dying to find out what really happened between that point and the Epilogue.
I have to stay the story Skye Callahan gave me is not what I was expecting… at all. There was waaaay more to the story than Rose and James trying to get back to “normal” and getting to know one another. I was definitely more invested in James than Rose. I’m pretty sure it’s because James had a more difficult time coming to terms with what happened between him and Rose inside the Retreat. Separating Silver and Kirk from James and Rose wasn’t as clear cut for James as it was Rose. But, then again was inside the Retreat much longer than Rose.
I really love James and Rose together. I’m glad they didn’t allow others to deter them from pursuing a relationship. Their “relationship” may have started under extreme circumstances, but that doesn’t mean it can’t thrive under normal ones.
This is truly a must read for those that enjoyed Irrevocable.
****An advance reading copy was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
I read Irrevocable and Bend, Don’t Break back to back and I think I’m in book hangover mode.
First, read Irrevocable. That is a must. It can be read as a stand alone but I wouldn’t stop with that one. You must move on and read Bend, Don’t Break.
In Bend, Don’t Break we get James’s side of things, but not in the way we get a second point of a view in a lot of follow up books. We are coming into this book as James is recovering from being shot. He has to see a therapist because of his job and what he’d gone through in Irrevocable. In those moments, and in his dreams, his thoughts, we flash back to some of the events that we went through in Irrevocable from his angle. We were able to see what this “job” was doing to him, what finding and being with Silver did to him.
It is just another absolutely amazing read from Skye Callahan. These 2 characters who someone might call broken after they what they went through were people I fell in love with. Not just Rose and James, Trent too. Trent was everything you would want in a friend. He had James’s back but also gave it to him straight when he needed to hear it, he kept in the loop when others though it would be better if he was kept out, and he watched over Rose when James couldn’t. All of the characters (the good guys) were integral to this book and each of them were built perfectly for the role they were given.
Personal, I think Irrevocable was a lot darker than Bend, Don’t Break, but that may be because at this point I knew what I was going into as I started reading.
Skye Callahan is on my favorite author list now. These 2 books together are the kind of books that make you feel honored to have been part of the story even just as a reader. It was such an amazing journey from start to finish.
Thank you so much for my copy of Bend, Don’t Break. I loved it. 5 stars from me!
HOLY WOW !! I am so happy to have read James' POV !! I love the male POV and as much as I loved the sick and twisted James - aka Kirk , I couldn't get enough of the REAL James !! Honestly the real James does have many similarities to Kirk. In this story we pick up where we left off in Irrevocable but we also get the inside scoop on how James ended up as Kirk and what went wrong and when. Hard book to review because I do not want to give anything away !! One of those times where you just have to have faith when we say go read these 2 books and see what we mean when we say CRAZY TWISTED AND AMAZING !!
James and Rose spend a bit of this book apart , trying to recover physically and mentally from all the events that went down at "The Retreat". When the truth came out at the end of Irrevocable it was like an OH SH** moment , and AHA , OMG MIND BLOWN !! Well do not get too comfy in the calm you may feel because this book has quite a few twists and turns itself !! Will we finally see an end to the sex trafficking ?? Will we finally figure out how Rose was captured or why ?? Can James and Rose survive each other on the outside or are they too wounded to go on ??
READ THE BOOK !! There is plenty of the HOTNESS we love from James and we also get to know his family/friends a little more. We get to see his devotion to his job and to protecting those he loves. We also get to see Rose in a different light. She is strong willed and feisty just as she was when she was Silver and you can see that although some of the events may have left their mark others are not far from what she wants in real life. This is a journey of healing , love and determination.

While I believe that it's awesome to have a book in Kirk/James' point of view, this wasn't what I was expecting. I felt like the "tone" was way different from Irrevocable- this wasn't dark at all, and that may be clouding my judgement of the book as a whole.
James is continuing on with his life, after the events at the Retreat. He's having trouble coping with the tactics he used, while undercover. Not to mention, he's still healing from a gun shot wound. Worst of all, he can only imagine what Silver/Rose is up to as he's forbidden to see her. Soon enough, he's involved with getting to the bottom of the investigation that he started.
Just because Kirk & Silver were rescued from the Retreat, doesn't mean the "Retreat" has been extinguished. Just because Kirk & Silver were rescued, doesn't mean that James and Rose can't forge anew.
This book isn't about Kirk or Silver, it isn't about the Retreat, it isn't even about "love overcoming the odds". This story is an intensive journey for James to wrap up loose ends, clean up the after-math, come to grips with what his life is now, and realizing what he can do with a little help from his friends.
The bad boys may be sexy, but the good guys always win!
When I found out that I would get to read James side of the story and get inside his head, I knew that I wouldn’t be let down. Skye has done it again and blown me away with Bend Don’t Break. I thought I loved James in Irrevocable, but after reading this one I became absolutely infatuated with him. He’s one amazing character that will forever have a place in this reader’s heart.
Bend Don’t Break will give you a whole new outlook on James. It shows what I already knew, that the man is absolutely unbelievable and just remarkable. He’s so caring, loving, and truly treasures those in his life. You get to understand how he was feeling through what he went through at The Retreat. I just couldn’t imagine the pain he felt through it all, till now, and it was an eye opener to this wonderful guy. Not only do you get to experience what he did, but you get to know what he’s going through now after everything that happened. I loved getting to know what he went through and was going through now because it lets you in this beautiful man’s world. I have to say that James is going on my book boyfriend and favorite book list, right up there with Kellan Kyle. Yes, he deserves to be on the top of my very long list of faves.
It’s one of the best books/series you will read this year. It’s dark, beautiful, and just overall a must read.
But will James and Rose aka. Silver and Kirk, make it to the very end still together?? You’ll have to pick up this wonderful book and find out for yourself.
I give Bend Don’t Break Five out of Five Infatuated STARS~~
After reading Irrevocable, I wanted to get James’ side of the story. This isn’t a retelling of his time at the retreat with Rose. It starts after he is shot.
Bend Don’t Break is the closure this story needs. It’s not as dark as the first book but it has it’s moments. James is recovery in this story after his gun shot. He is also trying to find his new version of normal after a year of being someone else. Even though it starts after the raid, James gives us flashbacks as he remembers things he’s done. We get a glimpse into his thoughts and feelings of his time at the retreat with Rose.
Despite the Doctor’s advice that he should let Rose live her life and move on, he just can’t. James and Rose formed a bond during their time together. So while they see if they still have something worth building a life on, James and his partner are trying to close the case. This is where things get even more interesting!
The author did a great job telling James’ side. I loved the flashback telling of his time at the retreat. It was a great way to get his thoughts and feelings across without retelling the first book. Skye Callahan gave me the closure I needed for these characters.
Speechless! This was exactly what I needed to be happy with their story! I'm so happy you decided to write his POV. I'm also happy with the way and the exact point you started his story. It was perfect! I love how your writing pulls me into the story and keeps me hooked till the end. God I love your writing. Your characters feel so real and as much as I love some of the character other I want to kill lol... But every character has a purpose to the story and I love that!
In this book we get to know what James aka Kirk thinks and feels. His battles and his nightmares. How I loved this character he wasn't weak he wasn't broken but yet his situation made him weak for Rose aka silver. The amazing connection between these two character is so good. They fight their struggles and dark past together. And at the end are exactly what I wanted them to be.... It's a must read
While this is book two of the series book one could be read as a standalone, but this one should not be read without reading Irrevocable first. James was on the inside of the sting, and while he was told to act the part, that doesn't mean that he didn't hurt or regret his actions. What he had done in there and what he had done to Rose had scarred him and he had a hard time forgiving himself. Yet something, rather someone was calling to him and he was unable to turn away from her. Was it better for him to stay away from her and save her the harm, or to go to her no matter what the cost?
Again, I am amazed, I read this in an afternoon, and I am so glad I had the time because I wouldn't have been able to put this down. This book isn't just the same story retold. While this book is told from James's POV it gives another side to the first story yet, builds onto the current story and another part that you haven't been told. So don't think you are just re-reading the first book from his POV. This book will pick up after the collapse of the Retreat and build up from there. Once again the suspense and drama are still present in this book but this one really plays up on the criminal case and the "who done it" aspect. Not so much of the dark factor from the first, while it's still there, the horrible shocking scenes are not, and it's for the better because I am not sure I could have reread some of them again.
The heat from Rose and James are still present but it's almost sad to see that it's not just Rose that is broken, James is hurting too. He is regretful of his actions yet really wants to take care of Rose and protect her and try and start again, if that's possible. The steam is still in this book, a bit less than the first, but I really enjoyed the criminal aspect and storyline in this one. While this could be the last book in the series, I do see where there are other characters to build on for another book! Hint Hint!!!
Thank you to, Skye Callahan, for this amazing opportunity to read & review this series. I really enjoyed them!
Dang it how I wish this book was as good as Irrevocable, but compared to the first book this one didn’t nearly have as much suspense, drama, twists and, well, plot.
I thought since this was Kirk’s ... sorry James, POV that I would really like it since I really liked James but sadly it was a bit of a bore. Don’t get me wrong, Unbreakable had its good moments with everything I depicted above, but few and between those moments it was slow and dragged out. Instead of revolving around the plot the story was more about the emotional aftermath of what happened in book one. While them working through it all and the trauma it caused is a good depth to characters and story it just became so much and so repetitive that it felt like one huge pity party for two. It really needed to be toned down a bit and more focused on the moving forward with the romance and the new issue they faced instead of stuck in that constant back flashes, guilt, resentment and whatnot.
This also made me less interested in the case they were working and made it difficult to follow because of that. I was more into the romance than the case and just as the whole working through it all them stumbling around and getting nowhere with the whole escort situation also became a snooze fest. It took a good while for the plot to actually start going somewhere because of this, but as soon as it finally started to be less about emotional damage and more about moving forward and solving the case it picked up a bit and I could find some more enjoyable moments in the book. A bit too little to late for a higher rating but good enough for the book to land on three stars.
I was so excited to get stuck into another book about James and Rose. I loved the first book and I devoured this story in no time as well, I loved finally getting inside James’ head and know that fierce protectiveness he has. I thought James and Rose were perfect together, I loved their strong characters and the way they just challenged each other. Even through their dark times and everything they’ve been through together at the Retreat, I really enjoyed the way they sought each other out and worked to be together. I loved learning about how James first got into taking the undercover role and how that all started. I also loved seeing Miles from a different angle too, I really enjoyed the interactions between these two. I would’ve loved to have know what happened to Miles in the end as nothing was really mentioned about what went down with him and his hearing. I felt like the end/takedown of the crew was over before it really began, I just felt one thing was happening then all of a sudden everything was down and falling apart for the ‘Retreats’. But nonetheless, a very enjoyable read that I loved every page of. 4.5 stars
This male POV tale was initially too solemn. Who wants to go to a male pity party. I guess the author thought her readers didn’t know he was undercover from the onset when introduced to James in “Irrevocable”. Her need to recall a tale already read was unnecessary and weakened my view of James’ character in the first book. But alas once arose enters, the pace picks up. Sadly, it wasn’t hard to figure out who had a hand in facilitating Rose’ abduction in “Irrevocable” nor that there were department breaches (trying not to spoil it for the future readers). The characters kept lagging. It’s not a fun read when I’m consistently waiting for story to catch up. Kirk’s role was a reveal as was the whole heroin storyline. A better story would have been to seek an destroy Milo. All in all this read was a disappointment at best. I would have preferred my journey with Rose and James to end with the conclusion of “Irrevocable”.
3.5 stars for this sequel. This is a recap and continuation of Kirks/James and Roses story. I really had Highhope's, since I enjoyed the first book so much but this book felt really distracting for me. I really wanted more about the interaction and relationship/recovery between James and Rose. There were so many other twists and turns in the storyline based on the case about the retreat after the raid/rescue that it felt like I disconnected from the main characters. I'll definitely read this author again because I liked all of the things that it had from the first one I just felt like this one fell flat.
Bdsm romance. MMC PoV. This books gives you some Kirk POVs from the last book, flash backs amd memories. Its set after the raid and some of the Retreat girl have come up missing. James and Trent are investigating. Its nice to be in James' mind. I'd recommend it for people who loved the first one.
I don't know if I loved this book more than the first, but Skye you did a great job on this one as well.I really enjoyed hearing things from James point of view,it made it so much more interesting.U gave us more about the retreat and rose and how they were able to deal with everything and move on just what I needed .I truly enjoyed reading your books.
This book was through James eyes, and what he sees takes the reader back to book 1; but just as good. Added more depth and made me like the series more . Well done!
Improvement from book 1. Picked up right where book 1 left off & continued the story in current time & retelling of prior key events in John’s POV which was significantly more interesting. My disappointment was in the on going grammatical errors & the lack luster ending.
Damaged and, trying to move on the characters find their way through a mine field of problem and in the end love prevails. This book tackled some emotional roadways and I was hooked with each turn.
Read your first book of this series in the Taste of Submission anthology. Had to continue with Unbreakable!!! The raw, deep feelings were well portrayed by the author and I couldn't put it down until I finished. Must Read
