Before she became one of Sweden’s most popular crime writers, Camilla Läckberg (b. 1974) worked as a marketing director and product manager for several years. Her first two crime novels, Isprinsessan (The Ice Princess) and Predikanten (The Preacher), received rave reviews from the Swedish press and quickly found a large readership. But her big breakthrough came when Stenhuggaren (The Stonecutter) was nominated for The Crime Novel of the Year award in 2005, and also when Olycksfågeln (The Stranger) and Tyskungen (The Hidden Child) were made lead titles in Bonnier’s Book Club.

Camilla’s books have gained even more popularity after being adapted into a TV-series, produced by SVT (Swedish Television).

In April 2017 her tenth book in the Fjällbacka-series, Häxan, was released – claimed to be her best novel so far! In 2019 Camilla received a diamond book for Häxan, since it has sold in over 300 000 copies in Sweden!

And in the spring of 2019 heralds the global launch of The Golden Cage, the first of two dark and suspenseful novels by Camilla Läckberg. After ten internationally bestselling novels and over 26 million copies sold, Läckberg’s next adventure will be a psychological suspense duology.

The Golden Cage was the most sold book in Sweden 2019.

Camilla Lackberg keeps surprising me with just how bad she's capable of being. With each new book in this series I'm positive she's reached the limit but she just keeps raising the bar!

This is really one long plot contrivance after another populated with the biggest cast of stereotypes I think I've ever seen in a police procedural/cozy mystery. For the record I didn't think it was possible to write a good story in those two genres at the same time and it turns out I was right but that hasn't stopped Lackberg from trying.

For those who've been spared from reading this deeply disappointing series let me bring you up to speed as painlessly as possible. The action takes place in Fjallbacka, a Swedish resort town, where Patrick, a detective on the local police force, lives with his wife Ericka who's a nonfiction writer. Well she was a nonfiction writer now she's primarily around to be in the various stages of pregnancy. This time she's having twins. Our heroes are surrounded by the biggest group of idiots this side of an IKEA. I categorically refuse to remember all their names.

Playing for Patrick's team is the lazy police officer, the lesbian police officer, the new guy who gets all the crappy chores, and the insanely stupid captain who never does anything right! Ericka has to make due with her sister, the battered wife, and her daughter, the terrible toddler who throws tantrums.

This time around everyone is trying to solve the case of the missing man. The missing man has been missing for three months. Remember that. It's important. The missing man's poor wife keeps showing up at the police station asking why the police are doing nothing to find him. Its really annoying the police the way she keeps expecting them to do their job. They talk about how annoying she is.

Finally Patrick goes over to the missing man's house. To search it. Which he hasn't done yet. After three months.

Seriously. That's what we're dealing with here.

So Patrick is "looking" for the missing man and meanwhile Ericka is "helping" the moody author launch his book. The moody author has written the most amazing book ever and everyone loves this book so much. But the moody author is moody and doesn't care. The moody author's wife is very upset that he's so moody. They fight about how moody he is a lot while their children try to kill each other in the background. There is never a scene in which the children are not trying to murder each other.

Then we have high school has been and number two. High school has been is a high school has been who hates his wife and has lots of affairs. His wife loves wine in a box and her daughters. But mostly wine in a box. She really, really loves wine in a box. They fight a lot. We never see their daughters. He has affairs. She drinks wine in a box.

Number two is an okay schlub who's wife is dying. It is very, very sad that his wife is dying. He's a schlub but he's okay.

The police have a lot of meetings and the captain says "I'm an idiot! Why haven't you solved this yet! I'm so stupid!" and the police role their eyes because their captain is so dumb! They "investigate" the high school has been, the moody author, and the schlub.

Then there are italicized chapters where a little boy is neglected by his horrible family. Who could this little boy be!?

The high school has been, the schlub, and the moody author are all getting threatening letters. Who's threatening them!? In a surprise reveal it turns out the high school has been, the schlub and the missing man were all friends in high school! Who would have known!? Maybe they did something really bad in high school that someone is now threatening them about!!?!?!?!?!?!?

Then everyone starts dying/getting horribly hurt and in the amazing finale we learn it was all because of a plot contrivance V.C. Andrews would be ashamed of.

I'm seriously finished with these books. Lackberg does literally no research on methodology, psychology or forensics and still insists on trying to write some kind of gritty, brutal, mentally scarring story and she fills it with equally poorly drawn characters who are there entirely to fill the kind of prescribed societal roles that were gross stereotypes in the 80's much less now. I am convinced that something is getting lost in the translation, the dialogue suffers most of all but improving that isn't going to help these pedestrian plots that are straight out of a Nancy Drew reboot reject pile.

Adios Fjallbacka!

A little confusing in the beginning, many characters and many different strands to this story. Easier for me since I have read this series from the beginning so was at least familiar with many of the detectives and police officers. Erica and Patrick and their friends and families. This is a slow burner, a missing person case, a friend of Erica getting a book contract but also receiving threatening notes. All parties involved claim not to know anything, are harboring secrets. Bits and pieces are distributed here and there but the solution is elusive and the answer when it comes it both horrifying and incredible. Not until the very end did I figure this one out, exactly when I believe the author wanted me to.

Atmospheric, some really good characters and a mystery hard to solve. The ending is a cliffhanger, so now I await the next book.

Ello me obliga a quitarle estrellas.

Prawie cała książka to były spokojne 3.5 gwiazdki. Ale ostatnie 30 stron? Porazka.

Jeez, I'm glad I'm finally done with this.

I've really enjoyed all the other Camilla Läckberg books before but this one bored me and it seems to be never-ending.

The storyline wasn't that bad (it wasn't brilliant but I've seen worse) but it was dragging on and on and on...

Two annoying things:
- Erica was in the background most of the time and when she was written about, she was always being nosy and putting her nose where it didn't belong.

- What happened to Martin? In all the previous books, he was Patrick's right-hand man and now, he seems to have been totally replaced by Paula. This is so weird and feels totally unnatural.

I'd like to know what happens with Patrick's health, with the twins and with Anna's baby but I'll check reviews before deciding whether I'll read the next one or not.

“Knowing that you're crazy doesn't make the crazy things stop happening.”

----Mark Vonnegut, an American pediatrician and memoirist

Camilla Läckberg, an international bestselling Swedish author, has penned yet another bone-chilling thriller, The Drowning in the Fjällbacka/ Patrik Hedström series, and this book is the sixth in the series. This story revolves around a debut author when he publishes his book, followed by threatening letters and that also jeopardized the lives of people in his whole social circle around him. Meanwhile another bestseller author is pinning hard for the unspoken past of this debut author that finally leads her to an adventurous as well as captivating journey through some cities of Sweden.

Synopsis:

Christian Thydell’s dream has come true: his debut novel, The Mermaid, is published to rave reviews. So why is he as distant and unhappy as ever?

When crime writer Erica Falck, who discovered Christian’s talents, learns he has been receiving anonymous threats, she investigates not just the messages but also the author’s mysterious past…

Meanwhile, one of Christian’s closest friends is missing. Erica’s husband, Detective Patrik Hedström, has his worst suspicions confirmed as the mind-games aimed at Christian and those around him become a disturbing reality.

But, with the victims themselves concealing evidence, the investigation is going nowhere. Is their silence driven by fear or guilt? And what is the secret they would rather die to protect than live to see revealed.

The moment Christian Thydell's debut book, The Mermaid is launched, the gravity of his whole world shifted rather say got worse. He started receiving threatening letters addressed to his name. Although all this started happening a year ago and few months ago, his only closes friend, Magnus, was reported missing by his wife, and now after the book's launch, his dead body that turned into ice was discovered. Followed by attacks on Christian's two of his friends, Kenneth and Erik, who too started receiving letters. Meanwhile, Erika Falck, another best-selling author cum Christian's mentor turned friend, is trying hard to figure out the strange connection between all four men, thus embarking on a journey to Christian's unspoken past which he kept so buried deep in his mind, that he is sure nothing can ever touch him. Erika's husband, Detective Patrik Hedström, is sure that whoever is targeting Christian and his friends and family must be someone who is out for revenge, only if the suspect left any clue on his/her wake or any slight reason as to why, but for that he needs to dig deeper into the closet of Christian's past skeletons.

The book held me from the very first chapter and let me go on the very last line of the book, although I must say, the book ended with a bang(I mean literally! )- a cliffhanger hinting to the nest book in the series. The book opens bit slow and all the while it seems like there's no point of stretching such a good story for so long by withholding the secret which finally became very obvious midway through the story. Anyhow, what allured me to stick to this book is the way the author narrates the whole story, bit-by-bit, piece-by-piece in a forward motion, where there were no wrong turns to mislead me into another theory of what has actually happened in Christian's past.

The writing style is flawless, with a captivating narrative style. The prose is evocative since most of the time it brings up the past despite of the clean slate kind of situation. The importance of having family is closely observed in this story thus leaving the readers with a feeling of longing for their families. Moreover, the author captures so as to what happens when a foster kid is adopted and soon the family gets pregnant with their own child, how that foster child loses the identity, how kids must be handled while they are growing up, and how some decisions of adults can actually ruin the fate of a child, all these themes are delicately depicted through this story.

The mystery doesn't play any games with the minds of readers, yet the author takes a lot of time to unravel her mystery, by giving each and every character a proper presence in this mystery, I mean it's like every one adds up to this mystery. The atmosphere that the author sets in with this story is one of which i9s thick in suspense and gives a chilling feeling while reading it and of evil, since the best part of this story is the careful postmortem of darkness underlying in the human souls.

The characters are strongly developed, with lots of back story so that the readers are able to contemplate with each and every one of her characters in this book. The demeanor reflected in each people of this small city in Sweden is impressive, where all the four families have their own story to tell. The main characters are developed with the pace of the mystery. The author here simply played with the minds of the readers in her own way, thus reproducing a brilliant masterpiece. And I promise, there are some characters in the book which are going to stay with you long after the end of the story.

Erica is the most striking character in the book, who despite being heavily pregnant with twins, she snoops around Christian's past to find out the mystery, despite her detective husband is working hard to make sure he puts every piece of puzzle together. But in spite of her nosiness, Erica is charming, strong and determined lady who ultimately is the one who guides her husband to catch the right track to find our about the missing link to Christian's past.

The author gives a vivid picture of Fjällbacka, where the story is set, given the fact that the descriptions in the book are very detailed and with such intricacy the plot has been laid out, that it feels like the reader is himself watching out the crime scenes unfolding right in front of his eyes. Moreover, the author strikingly captures the cold and the gray backdrop of yet another amazing city in the world, Fjällbacka, that comes alive with the story.

Since this is the second book that I read in this series, the first being not so memorable for me, but surprisingly this book stands out in the mellow, which being bit long still maintains that old charm of being intriguing and intense both at the same time.

Verdict: Crime fiction fans will love to read this book and watch out for this terrific writer.

Courtesy: Thanks to the publishers from Harper Collins for providing me with a copy of this book, in return for an honest review.

Not sure how but I did manage to finish it! So it gets 2 stars. I increasingly find Erika more and more of an interfering.... And Patrik the most useless police officer ever.
Unfortunately I still have 2 more of this series waiting to be read.

Very disappointed; little to no forward momentum in the first 400 pages, and lots of red herrings. The pace picks up finally, but resolution ( SPOILERS FOLLOW) pivots on revealing that a suspect has both schizophrenia and "split personality." I mentally threw the book against the wall at this point, as the suspect until the last 50 pages led a fully functional adult life totally inconsistent with having schizophrenia, and the entire medical community has now disavowed the existence of "dual personality" disorder. To cap the insult to the reader, the author places all three protagonists of this continuing series in unresolved peril of death in the last 3 pages. Cheesy and undeserved audience manipulation at its worst. I won't be tuning in to find out what happens!

‘The hidden child’ was such a huge success by the author Camilla Lackberg, that much anticipation and expectation proceeded it with standards raised high, so that ‘the drowning’ was met by many adoring fans and harsh critics. After seeing Camilla Lackberg on the UK television show ‘the TV book club’ on channel 4, I already felt as a consequence of this very familiar with the author before I began to read her work and open the pages of the eagerly awaited new crime novel. But it did not prepare me for the overwhelming shock that I received and experienced, with a most outstanding book. Reading ‘the drowning’ was like learning a new meaning for crime-writing that was taken to a whole new level, with a slick storyline, heart-pounding tense drama and truly inspired characters. The prologue containing a description of a man’s death instantly captures your attention, with the story then taking off at full speed; leading you on a journey into the unknown that is full of mystery and unanswered questions. It contains flashbacks that help to structure the complex storyline, so that each current event ties in with a past event making chronological sense. The question of finding the killer makes it as readable as an Agatha Christie novel but one with an added modern twist, blood and most of all authenticity within our century. The cliffhanger ending left me gripping the edge of my seat with tension and much interest, which afterwards made me want to go back and re-read it again. The psychological twist and strong mystery elements made this book such a winner and one of the most exciting and gripping reads within this genre to date. I chose to read the paperback version rather than listen to the audio version narrated by Eamon Riley, as I felt that it would certainly be more realistic with the use of detailed description, settings and the author’s use of language that ultimately brings it to life. This is a tale that certainly keeps you guessing as you become more emotionally entwined within the characters lives. The hidden secrets will leave you guessing right up to the very end, with your mind being taken on a rollercoaster of a ride that is truly chilling. Much was expected of the author as anticipation ran high with this new work; therefore it was fantastic when here you can be contented with the product of another masterpiece that exceeds all expectations. I predict great things for an author who has already proved herself to be a stead fast bestseller, with the most engaging storylines within the crime genre and who has totally surpassed herself once more in the form of ‘the drowning’.

This book is part of a Swedish mystery series and was quite a mixed bag.

It had a lot of suspense, but even more stereotypes and a pretty unlikely solution.
Particularly the very nosy wife of one policeman kept annoying me. Somehow the author seemed to aim at a mix of a police procedural and a PI mystery with a quirky detective.

As I don’t know the other parts of the series which made it difficult for me to get into the book, I am generous and rate with 2.5 stars
-----------------------------------------------

It had been a while since I had read the series set in Fjällbacka, Sweden and decided to pick up the continuation of where I left off. An exhausted but determined police officer Patrik Hedström and his very pregnant and curious wife, writer Erica, are both investigating the death of a local man and the threatening letters sent to a newly first time published author. There are moments in the book that I remembered really liking the series but it fell short here. At times I felt disconnected and frustrated with the characters - not answering calls, not replying to questions, hidden agendas, etc. I had decided that I was not going to read the series any further but the ending was explosive and it hooked me again. 3.5 stars.

It's a mood piece. Although you catch up with Patrik and his wife and most of their extended families in the wider sense, and also with Annika and numerous other work related mates- it isn't their story that dominates. It's the sick mind of the boy whose thoughts appear between- within the sections printed in italics.

This was a book I read over weeks, although I didn't list it right away. It was easily taken up and put down. I felt no urgency whatsoever, and truth be known, didn't know if I would finish. But I did. The entire thing.

What kept me going was not the plot, but the characterizations of Erika and the conversations that so contain a Swedish cognition/paradigm. It's hard to describe. But there exists a placement mood, apart from the "sick" perp plot. Camilla Lackberg just grabs that morose (to me), minimalist to stark, drinking and depression as a near universalist constant. Nails that emotional distance that colors her place and especially her language. Her people believe in less is less- do not have any surety of faith or in admiration for logic, IMHO. And much of their spirit and cognition is either placed in the present or in backward to the past looking views.

So that aspect is what kept me going on this one- to a point where I enjoyed most of it. It's a skill and a mood. The facts of the story here; that Erika, Anna, and Cecilia and some others mentioned too- have all decided to further the race! In Erika's case by two, on top of it. Actually, I don't remember so many pregnancies in one book outside of chick. lit.

That signifies a stable hope coupled with good intent for energy and future. Amazing! Doubly so here, as Lackberg's children as soon as they take their first breathes are in majority nasty, bad intent noise bombs and dominatingly beastly selfish. And a sizable portion are also evil from infancy.

I knew the culprit before page 200. And guessed the state and method of his acting out. But Erika and Anna actually proceeding to put one foot in front of the other and dare to aspire and hope daily- that made the book for me.

One last thought. This is probably the last Lackberg I read- as I see no more on the horizon. But honestly, after reading her bunch? I think she has a strong inkling, no more than an inkling, a firm perception herself cognitively- that all men are basically just like Erik in this one. She consistently has this same model or a more drunken twin as regulars times two or three in all her works. And they all have greater chum relationships than they have wives or partners for chats or leisure hours spent. She describes them sublimely so she must know about this.

Hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

The biggest shock factor in Lackberg's books for me is that the police are waiting around for months actively keeping one of their three current cases open. And that they spent hours and hours of travel to ask a few questions and otherwise have no more than that are their plates. I know that there are only 1000 people in this town, but come on! How do they parse that with the police employed for so little. And yet all those suicides! As here, as well.

The Drowning While I have enjoyed most of Lackberg's books in the Patrick Hedstrom series, I was disappointed in this one. True, she did have the same interesting characters, both Patrick and Erica, his co-workers at the police station and Erica's sister, Anna. Unfortunately, in this book they were all pessimistic, discouraged and worried to death over slight things. Patrick and Erica's daughter, Maja, came across as a terror. I have a lot of respect for Patrick and Erica but if they can't outsmart their young daughter, which only happens once in the entire book, then how can they outthink and outmaneuver much more sophisticated villains? Altogether, the author's views on marriage, parenthood, relationships, friendships, partnerships and the ways of a community are all bleak. Her other books had at least a hint of optimism here and there.

The other thing that totally got to me? The whole plot depended upon a few characters stonewalling and denying crucial pieces of information over and over and over again. Not just the suspects though, the detectives and friends and Patrick and Erica all did that too! When partners and allies wouldn't make phone calls or answer phone calls all day, wouldn't disclose any information to each other, needed a 'bit more time to think things through' before sharing any information, didn't want to 'hurt' someone by telling the truth or disappeared for hours following a lead, it became all too predictable and frustrating!!! Seriously. Very disappointing.

Wow! To think that I had not read Camilla Läckberg in more than three years...

Anyway, it was quite ok to be back in Fjällbacka, even though I barely remembered what had happened in the fifth book. And even though Läckberg can hardly be considered my favourite crime writer.

In this book we have an engrossing mystery. However the resolution was kind of a let-down for me. And that information-withholding thing Camilla Läckberg has already got us used to was annoying. Especially at a particular point of the story. It can be difficult to try to understand what's going on if the author doesn't even bother with providing her readers with some hints.

As usual, there's a lot about Patrik, Erika, Anna, Dan, their kids, but I'm already used to that, so that's not an issue anymore. Or, at least, it's something I'm able to ignore.

This one is difficult to rate. I didn't find it brilliant, or particularly interesting, however the story managed to keep me glued to it. I really wanted to know what on earth was going on. And then I was disappointed. So, three stars, I suppose.

And yes, I'll read the next one, because, after the way this book ends, it is impossible not to. Damn you, Camilla Läckberg, and your cliffhangers!
