A Body to spare by Sue Ann Jaffarian.

Odelia had a few errands to run, not unusual for this busy gal, and just time enough to get her car washed before returning home to her hubs, Greg. Then the screams rang out loud and clear. Odelia ran to her car where all the commotion was taking place. All eyes were on the open trunk of Odelia's car. A lifeless body lay inside with a note attached.

So begins one of, if not THE best Odelia Grey mysteries to date. Odelia's boss, Steele, is on his honeymoon and Homicide Detective (and friend) Devon Frye is getting ready for retirement. Somehow everyone is in close collaboration on this case with Odelia in it hook, line and sinker.

Corpse magnet at her best. Mystery addicts and Odelia fans ...you cannot miss this one. GREAT READING!

This is one of my favorite series. I have a lot of them and I'm trying to get caught up on the one's that are winding down. I can't believe I've gotten so far behind and when I read that there will be only two more books in this series, I started jumping on them. I'm going to try and read for pleasure this summer.

I don't know. I'm on the fence with this book. First, I'm not a big fan of the spiritualistic aspect and it's really something that hasn't popped up in this series until now, so it felt out of left field. On the other hand, I realize Emma is a character from Sue Ann Jaffarian's other series and she's having fun with her making an appearance here.

The other sticking point which bothers me is Elaine Powers. On the one hand, I understand how the relationship between her and Odelia evolved into a sort of friendship. I also get her warped sense of motivation to an extent. But after all is said and done, she is still a cold-blooded killer. And trying to humanize her doesn't feel completely right, though I did cry at the end.

Also, the conclusion to the lives of Zach and Jean was depressing. These two young people managed to escape an abusive and dangerous situation and make something of their lives only to be cut down while Alec Finch still lives without any guarantee of being properly punished. Money and power and not the greatest evidence all might keep him from receiving the punishment he deserves.

This is #10 in the Odelia Grey series and I definitely need to go back and read the rest.

Odelia and her mother, Grace, are out running errands. After stopping at the car wash, they are getting ready to leave when they hear a scream. In the trunk of her car, the attendants find a dead, naked body, curled up, tied and with a note attached. Immediately Odelia is handcuffed and taken to the police station, at the top of the suspect list. She and her husband, Greg, decide to learn all they can about the victim, and who might have had a grudge against Odelia to frame her like that, while convincing Odelia's mother not to write about it on her blog called "A Old Broad's Perspective". The feds quickly become embroiled in the case and they do not want Odelia and Greg messing around in their crime investigation. Some speculate that the high-profile victim may have been used to draw some of Odelia's connections out into the open when they come to her rescue, although Odelia is certain that her "friends" (that term is used loosely considering they are contract killers and embezzlers) didn't do it.

I like that the characters are so everyday normal. Odelia is a plus-sized paralegal who is mouthy, sarcastic, bold, and loves her husband, mother and brother very much. Her husband Greg may be wheelchair-bound, but he's strong, confident and not afraid to stand up to anyone despite his handicap, especially where Odelia or Grace are concerned. They are supportive of each other and work together as a team, whether they are investigating a murder or trying to keep Odelia's mother in check and out of trouble. Odelia's mother is a bit irresponsible, and not without her issues.

There were a few twists and turns in the story, but the ending was quite surprising and sad at the same time. I understand why Odelia is referred to as "The Corpse Magnet". I recommend this book to any lovers of cozy mysteries as well as humourous mysteries.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this story very much! I haven't read the rest of the series but had no problem picking this one up. Though I do think reading the previous ones would be helpful to understand the history of the characters and probably a lot of fun.

Odelia has a habit of "finding" dead bodies. This time one is found in the trunk of her car. It's a young man that was kidnapped years ago and long suspected of being dead, only he's freshly dead! Worst of all, her mother is there at the carwash with her when the body is found in her trunk! Odelia is worried about her mother spreading it all over the internet on her blog. Her mother does get in a bit of a "bind" when the killer is found out though.

Odelia Grey is running around town with her list of errands. When she gets to the carwash, she gets a surprise when a dead body is found in her trunk, and Odelia finds herself on the top of the suspect list. Odelia's family and friends line up to help her figure out why someone would frame her for the murder - and what a cast of characters these folks are! Her wheelchair-bound husband Greg, and several gangster friends all investigate and the results are mostly funny and interesting. This is book 10 in the series, but the first one I've read. Delia is not the typical female sleuth, and that's a good thing. She seems more like someone who lives next door and just happens to have a knack for finding dead bodies. I plan to go back and read the earlier books in this series.

Odelia’s day of running errands come to an abrupt end when the attendants at the car wash pop her trunk and find a dead body there. Who was he in life? And why would someone leave him for Odelia to find?

From that simple premise comes another fun adventure for Odelia and the rest of the crew. The plots twists to some unexpected places. The characters are charming and wonderful as always. Add in a dash of wit and you’ve got another winner. I rest most of it in 24 hours, and I’m already anxious for Odelia’s next adventure.

I haven't read any of the previous book in the series, so I didn't have the connections to some of the characters that seem to be regulars, but that didn't hinder the story itself at all. I thought the mystery was okay, but just predictable/obvious. Odelia was annoying, if I'm being honest. I didn't like her and I really can't place why. I liked that she was confident in her size, but it almost seemed like too much emphasis was placed on food and things like that. I don't think I'd read any other books in the series, unless like this one they fit a challenge, just because it took way too long to read and wasn't all that enjoyable.

I'm going to miss Odelia and the gang! I hate when authors give up on a great series. Or even worse die - Damn you Rex Stout & Lillian Jackson Braun!!! We have to keep struggling along finding new authors to read. Well, with my faithful guard cat Watson by my side, I will soldier on. I love the similar books listings on Goodreads as a way of finding these as yet undiscovered (by me) authors.

I really cant say how much I enjoy Odelia Grey. She is the most fun heroine I would love to hang out with. Sort of, lol.
In this installment Odelia is simply having her car detailed. Sitting with her mother, she watches as the workers open her trunk, and leap with alarm. Hurrying out, she finds another corpse. This time settled naked next to the spare tire, in her trunk.
With the cops involved and an FBI agent called in after the identity of the corpse becomes known, Odelia and her mother are whisked away for questioning. And the FBI know about her notorious friends Willie, and Elaine, better known as Mother. Its up to Odelia, and her unwitting accomplices: Her Husband Greg and her Brother to find out what happened without leading the cops or FBI to Willie or Mother. On the way to finding out who was behind the killings, and the body dump into her trunk, Odelia must say goodbye to a dear friend who has decided to retire and move away.
I strongly reccommend this series. It is fast paced, and absolutely entertaining.

When most things in life are uncertain, it was comforting to spend time with Odelia, Greg, and others in the pages of this 10th in the series. I can tell the series is starting to wind down (only 2 more books) because one main character and one secondary character make their exits in this installment. This mystery starts with a bang - Odelia is having her car detailed when a dead body is found in her trunk! Who was this person and why was the body put in Odelia's car? The rest of the book is the winding road to answer these questions.

FOUND ME! THAT'S ALL THE NOTE SAID.....

Book number ten in this twelve book series...loved it!

Odelia and Greg seem to be in over their heads this time when Odelia finds a surprise in the trunk of her car at the car wash.

An old kidnapping is brought back into the limelight, the entire crew from previous books are hanging out again, and there are plenty of twists, turns, and surprises.

All of the books in this series are excellent, but this one was exceptionally good.

If you haven't had a chance to read this series, now is a good time to start.

Excellent mystery. Highly recommended. Spunky heroine you can't help but like, as well as good supporting characters. It's not one of those cozy mysteries where the heroine just stumbles into things. Odelia investigates and uses her smart to play a vital role in solving crimes.

It's the 1st one I read by this author, so I'll be going back to pick up #1 and read the rest.

Couldn’t make it past the 1st chapter. The plot has so much potential but the writing is too choppy and cheezy for me. Reminds me of grading middle school narratives.

Review:

Odelia and her mother are at a car wash, waiting for her car to be finished, when suddenly people start screaming around her car. When she goes to see what the commotion is about, she sees that there is a dead naked man in her trunk. She has no idea who he is or how he got in there. With the help of her husband, Greg, and her brother, Clark, they figure out who the victim is. Turns out that the body is that of a young man who had been kidnapped many years ago. Odelia has no connection to the dead man, and does not know why her car was the one the body was in. When the media finds out about the identity of the mam, Odelia will find herself thrown in the the media frenzy, something she does not want to happen. It will take all of her sleuthing skills and the skills of her friends to get to the bottom of the mystery.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. I really enjoyed meeting all of them and spending time with them. I loved the fact that Odelia is a plus size older woman. So many of the heroines in the cozies I read are young, fit and gorgeous. It was so refreshing to read about someone that did not fit into that stereotypical mold. I thought it was so funny when she described how she felt after she jogged for a bit, I could relate to that completely. I could just picture her, hands on knees, bent over, gasping for air because that is exactly what I would look like. I also liked the fact that Odelia does not do things spur of the moment and put herself into unnecessary danger. That is not to say she does not find herself in a perilous situation, because she does, but it really is not her fault. I also like her husband Greg. Although he is wheelchair bound, he is still a strong person and is fully prepared to take care of Odelia and her mom. And he is not constantly telling her to stay out of things and mind her own business. Instead they work together to come up with a plan to figure the mystery out.

The mystery is well plotted and carried on throughout the entire book. I enjoyed the way a mystery from long ago was intertwined with the current mystery, I thought it was very clever. I thought I had the mystery figured out but I was only half right.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there watching all the action going on around me. She is also very talented in writing humor into her work. There are many funny parts in the book that had me laughing out loud. Odelia’s mother is quite quirky and her antics were fun to read about. To be truthful, I would not have even cared if there was no mystery in this book because I enjoyed reading about Odelia and Greg so much.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery with characters that you will love. I have not read any of the other Odelia Gray Mysteries but I plan on reading all of them. If I could give this book more than five stars I would, that is how much I enjoyed it. Do yourself a favor and check out this series, you will definitely be glad that you did.

"A Body To Spare" by Sue Ann Jaffarian will be published on November 8, 2015.

I chose this mystery because I was excited about the idea that the main character was not gorgeous tall and thin. I thought it would be nice to read a character that was a little more like me, short and... rubenesque, lol. I'll admit that I found it really enjoyable when I related to some of the things the main character, Odelia felt. When she found herself tired, with aching knees after running after a suspect I smiled with understanding.

Odelia Grey is a paralegal who seems to be a corpse magnet. Every time she turns around a body shows up in her vicinity. This time there's a naked dead twenty-something man taped up in her trunk. When the police run the fingerprints of the body they find that he was Zak Finch, who had been kidnapped eight years ago. Odelia begins looking into Zak's previous life and where he's been for the past decade. What Odelia and her husband are worried about is that Zak's death is somehow connected to one of the unsavory people Odelia has connected with. She has collected some unusual associations over the years, being a corpse magnet. Until she clears her name, her life is in danger.

I really loved this book, it was daily a four out of five stars. It was also an easy chick lit kind of cozy mystery. I loved the character of Odelia, Sue Ann Jaffarian wrote her to be funny, street smart and so darn likable. I really appreciated the easy reading of this mystery. It was no struggle to follow all the clues but the mystery was complicated enough that I didn't figure out who was the ultimate culprit, although I was in the vicinity by the end. If you're looking for a fun and easy read that makes you feel like putting your feet up with a good cuppa coffee then pick up "A Body To Spare". Here's some even better news, there are nine previous Odelia Grey books and two short stories. So if you love this one as much as I did then you can read Sue Ann Jaffarian mysteries for many months before you run out!

Like Odelia Grey, we all have at least one day a month where we run all over doing errands that we have been putting off. Hopefully we are not like her that while have a car detailed a naked dead man is found in our trunk. I mean really the hassle involved is unbelievable. The police insist on wanting to know who the man was? What was he doing in the trunk? Why was he naked? How did he die? Why was he killed? The most galling thing was they had the audacity to enquire as to whether or not Odelia had anything to do with his death; which translated means Did you kill him?

Zack Finch was kidnapped eight years earlier and never heard from or seen again. That is until the car wash attendants find him stuffed in the trunk? Odelia find herself at the center of the investigation and sets out to find out about Zack and how his life came to an end. Why was he put in her trunk? So many questions with so few answers. Once you begin reading you will not want to put this book down. From the moment I picked it up I was glued to every word. It may be the tenth book in the series, but that no way deters from the plot or the readers enjoyment. The characters are well established and developed. Pick up any of Odelia Gray Mysteries to indulge a few hours of escapism. My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

Odelia and her quirky mother find a body in the trunk of Odelia's car, immediately putting Odelia at the top of the suspect list. She and her husband, Greg, decide to learn all they can about the victim, like why Odelia's car became the ultimate dumping ground and what connection he may have had to Odelia, while convincing Odelia's mother not to write about it on her blog call A Old Broad's Perspective. The murder becomes a small turf war between the local law enforcement and the Feds. Some speculate that the high-profile victim may have been used to draw some of Ophelia's connections out into the open when they come to her rescue, although Odelia is certain that her "friends" (that term is used very, very loosely considering they are contract killers) didn't do it.

Love this witty series, and I think this is my favorite of them all. I like that the characters are so average. Odelia is a plus-sized paralegal who is sassy, bold, and loves her husband and mother above all. Her husband Greg may be wheelchair-bound, but he's strong, confident and not afraid to stand up to anyone despite his handicap. They are supportive of each other and work together as a team, whether they are investigating a murder or trying to keep Odelia's mother in check. Odelia's mother is quirky, a bit irresponsible, and not without her issues.

The plot was engaging and well developed and I believe A Body To Spare could easily be read as a stand alone (although the reader will develop more of a connection with the characters if they are read in order). A lot of familiar faces reappear in this book, lending a sense of continuity to the series. I expected a few twists and turns in the story, but the ending was quite surprising and sad at the same time. I think it's possible that the new characters introduced might return with a bigger role in a future book. I hope so, as the occupation aspect would work quite nicely with Odelia's "corpse magnet" status.

Highly recommend.

Started this book yesterday and couldn't put it down! This is not surprising as I do this quite often with the Odelia Grey series by Sue Ann Jaffarian. This cozy mystery started out innocently enough with Odelia getting her car washed before taking her mom to lunch. A body is found in her trunk and it's the body of a young man who had been kidnapped 8 years earlier as a young teenager. The rest was a romp of an investigation to put all the pieces together in order to clear her name. I guessed right on the circumstances of the kidnapping, but it wasn't clarified until the very end of the story, so there was always a smidgen of doubt. I was stumped on the murderer, but it turned out to be one of the characters I had, had a fleeting suspicion of. It was one of those, he could have done it, but then it was so far fetched I immediately talked myself out of it. That also wasn't revealed until the end and my jaw hit the floor! I loved the guest appearance of a main character from another series written by the author! Too cool! I was sad to lose a character, too. She was a bad guy with a good heart. It was a tragic death with a touch of dignity added. Very well handled. I have read all of this series and with each book, I think it's the author's best....that is until the next in series comes out. This was an excellent book, well written, well paced. Anyone loving cozy mysteries will love this one. It can be enjoyed as a stand alone, but is one of a series, so characters introduced in earlier books are mentioned, but don't take away the enjoyment of this one. I highly recommend Sue Ann Jaffarian's books. Every one of the books I have read by her have left me feeling satisfied and happy and just waiting for the next one to be published.

Amazing? Well, 4.5 star worthy. This series, despite the fact I believe I've read every book to date, has never made it on to my must read list. I'm not sure why. I definitely appreciate how different the story lines have been and how Greg's situation as a wheelchair bound individual is portrayed and incorporated. He is more than a stock character, the patient husband with the crazy wife running around getting into trouble.

I whipped through A Body to Spare and almost had to smack myself for not figuring out what the connection the young man had to Odelia was. I did predict what happened to the young man and who was ultimately responsible though.

The action is non-stop once the body of a naked young man is found in Odelia's trunk. Greg is along for most of the ride in this one as Odelia tries to find out what links the body to her. Most of the usual side characters show up with two (well, maybe 3, but one isn't a surprise to those familiar with the last couple of books) having major life changes which will affect future books.

What I appreciate about this series is that Odelia actually gets out there and sleuths and she talks and works with the other characters and they contribute to the action. She also doesn't make really dumb moves. Yes, her heart is occasionally bigger than her brain, but she thinks about ways to minimize some of her actions.

I loooooove Odelia and Greg, and the whole crazy cast of characters Jaffarian has created. I've been reading the Odelia Grey series since I noticed the very first one on a library shelf, several years ago, and thought to myself: Omg! Is that a fat woman on a book cover?!?! Seriously, when you're a (very) round peg who's spent her entire life trying to fit into a very narrow slot, any woman on a book cover (or magazine, or billboard, or movie poster, etc.) who isn't the usual skinny model type is definitely going to catch your attention. So, that's what got me to pick up the book. The back cover blurb got me to check it out of the library. I've never been so grateful to a graphic artist in my life. I love this series. Always makes me laugh. Always has me losing sleep so I can read just a little bit more. Always has me missing the characters like they were my own family. This latest one is no exception. I was so sad to get to the end. It went way too fast. And Jaffarian is going to be taking a much deserved break, and slowing down, so it'll be awhile before the next one. If you like smart, sassy women who don't live on salad and water, you'll love Odelia. If you like cozy mysteries, but also like action and humor, you'll REALLY love Odelia. BUY THESE BOOKS! :-)

This is great cozy mystery. I haven't read any of the others in the series but it wasn't necessary although I will go back and read them since I enjoyed this book so much. I can't wait to read the next book but I guess I have to.
I really liked that Odelia was middle aged, and a bit plumb. I really enjoyed the character interaction and how even though her mother is a bit out there and drives her crazy, she still puts up with it. I like how even though her husband is in a wheelchair, he isn't portrayed as handicap at all. He is the strong protector and she leans on his strength to help her out. I do love the term corpse magnet. There are parts of the book that follow the same plot line all mysteries do but there are quite a few surprising twists that I never saw coming. I thought I knew who did it but I was only half right. I wish I had access to the Marigold search engine :). I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Sue Ann Jaffarian's new book, A Body to Spare.

I have to say, this was my favorite Odelia Grey book yet! The twists and turns were great! The story begins with a body found in Odelia's trunk at the car wash. Again, Odelia's luck as the corpse magnet has not run out. As the mystery begins to unfold, Odelia gets help from old and new friends. Out of the blue, she receives a surprise phone call, and that was one of my favorite parts! I can't say anymore about it because it would spoil the surprise for you, but I was so excited when the caller announced their name.

As usual, there was a lot of action, with poor Odelia trying to clear her name, deal with a friend moving away, and bodies piling up. Ms. Jaffarian does a fantastic job, keeping the story funny and action-packed at the same time. You don't want to put this one down.

The book will be released in November, so I highly recommend you put it on your to be read list!

Here we have Book 10 in the Odelia Grey Mystery series… And it’s TERRIFIC. Jaffarian makes Odelia’s crazy world of hit men, private eyes, cops and ex-cons seem almost run of the mill. But it’s still a surprise to find a dead guy in the trunk of her car.

The dead guy has a bizarre past. Odelia and the gang manage to dig into it and find more than one bad apple who could be responsible. As usual, the more they know, the deeper trouble they get themselves into.

Jaffarian rocks at creating believable relationships. Whether it’s Odelia’s marriage, immediate family, or professional contacts, I like eavesdropping on their conversations and coming along for the ride while they solve the mystery.

You can read the books in this series as standalones, but if you choose to read several, go in somewhat chronological order. :)

If you haven't read Body to Spare by Sue Ann Jaffarian, don't spare another moment, go now and get it from your local bookstore or buy the ebook. You won't be able to put down this fantastic Odelia Grey mystery. The characters feel like close friends and the action will keep you guessing until the end. This book can be read as a stand alone, but you will understand the character relationships better if you have read some of the previous Odelia Grey mysteries. So much fun! I was a little sad that one character, bad as she was, has now left the playing field. And Dev is moving away. I also missed the absence of Steele, he only made a few quick appearances. New twist, we are treated to a guest appearance from Emma Whitecastle from the Granny Apples mystery series. I wonder if Odelia will help Emma and Granny solve a mystery in a future book? All in all, don't miss this fabulous Odelia Grey mystery.
