t.A.T.u. story: Reconstruction of the rise and fall of the most controversial Pop duo of the 2000s

Rate this book
The story of a daring music project hatched in Russia after the economic crisis of 1998 with little expectation of success, but which, amazingly, exploded onto the international scene and spawned the most contentious and controversial pop group of the new century, seducing millions of teenagers and causing headaches for TV broadcasting bosses around the world.
A detailed and documented reconstruction of t.A.T.u.'s success and the social phenomenon of the "shocking lesbian duo" that broke all the rules of Western show business, from the 25 gold and platinum discs they were awarded for their first album up to their break-up in 2011, through the direct accounts of those involved.

I really enjoyed reading this. A few spelling inconsistencies and grammar errors here and there. But it really was an insightful look into the lives (personal & professional) of the t.A.T.u. girls. I had vague knowledge of a lot of the information presented in the book. However t.A.T.u. story helped organize the events by time for me and get a clearer picture as well as filled in the blanks. Especially since it gave some inside as to how business worked within the band. And this book help convey the truth behind the scandels. Overall good read and a must for any fans of t.A.T.u.

This suffers from pretty poor translation issues. Some of the interviews were in Russia and then it was translated to Italian and then English. This is also a book about a music duo and the author shows preference to one of the duo over the other.

The story of Tatu is actually pretty sad. These two underage girls were exploited and given a terrible contract, then Julia's health issues really plagued the duo from the start. They still had a ton of hits and it's weird how much time was spent just on the first album while the rest of their discography was skimmed over.

As a t.A.T.u. fan this was a great dive/archive into the band's history and clears up how exactly everything fell apart in the end. With the book being published in 2014, I wonder how an addendum would be with the drama that seems to continue with a band that has ended and yet still lives on? (It's also a wonder to me that Lena and Julia are relatively well adjusted and what they went through explains Julia's behavior in recent years)

A fun history about a band who just couldn't seem to get out of their own way
